Thanks a lot for the detailed review! Always appreciate your take on these things. It's crazy how action cameras keep getting better and offering more features. I went with the Action 4 last year, and I still think it's awesome. I mostly shoot while moving, so I don’t really need anything extra. The battery life has been great for me too, and it never overheated here in the US. From my experience, overheating tests don’t always match real world use. Plus, battery performance depends a lot on how long you’ve been using it. That infrared test you did looked pretty cool though 👍
That Macro Lens is the primary reason that I'm nabbing the Hero 13 Black. Thanks for getting this out so fast. All of the other additions aren't that appealing to me. Too bad that lens won't work with the Hero 12 and others. I do like that the camera senses the lens when you put it on. AT 1080p they still stuck to 240fps so, unimproved. OOOhhhh, a heat-sink :) yes please! I like the distinctive change in battery contact location so I can grab one and know it's the right one by feel. Yes to fewer crashes and low overheat issues. I have a Hero10 black that just tanked on day, dead as dead can be. Thanks for this review, I needed more macro samples, but great overall. Ordered!
It should fit with small modifications. There is small notch on the inside that prevents you to screw it properly on older models, you can just grind that away. You can see that notch on 11:18.
Just curious, the GoPro is a action cam that specialized in digital stabilization... What's your use case with a Macro?... Any modern mirrorless/DSLR has far superior image quality and you can have it with similar or less money... Just why?
@@xuchenglin6256 For me, Macro lens also seems like the biggest perk. I use my GoPro mostly for vacation videos, or construction videos. If there was a lens I could use for close up shots (food, my pets, a cool rock, or just some close-ups of what I'm working on) then it would be awesome. I'm not interested in filming with multiple cameras. I just want a plug-and-play option, and GoPro fits the bill since I'm not keen on filming with my phone. From the sample footage I've seen, it looks like I may even be able to get away with having ONLY the macro lens, as it seems to focus much further than the claimed 3 feet.

So this means GoPro 12 ain't gonna get GPS accessory? Why don't you add GPS details from Garmin device. It can control the app, you can just time sync it and populate it later.
@GoPro please add an function to lock the shooting mode. Too often I have finished my surf session to find Timelapse’s of it instead of normal movies. Otherwise, I’m a big fan.
Really appreciate the camera vids. My gopro 7 black still runs but battery life is short. New Tarmac this year has me riding outdoors again and filming for fun and safety. Looking forward to this upgrade as the insta 360 is a bit to heavy and not easy to mount on aero bars. Cheers from Southern California 🍻
First of all: how cool is your T-shirt!! I had given up at GoPro back at V.7. Totally given up when the gps was taken away. This version may bring me back to GoPro. Thanks for your review. I look forward to your full tutorial.
Hero 7 was arguably the best "Action cam" they ever made. It's been my only GoPro since, and this Hero13 (with a macro-lens) is the first time I'm considering upgrading.

The only review that matters! I love your in-depth GoPro coverage. I just released a travel film and about half of it was shot on my 11 Mini and 12 Black. There was only 1 issue I had: overheating when stopping to film 30-minute plus guided tours of some historic sites along the Karakoram Highway. But I had 2 GoPros, so I just alternated 😂

Definitely the most comprehensive review of the Hero 13 on UA-cam at the moment. Well done. 😃 The one feature that might tempt me to upgrade from the Hero 11 Black is the ability to connect to wireless mics like the DJI Mic 2. This would make it possible to do live commentary on a driving video with the GoPro attached to the roof on a magnetic mount like Snap Mount. It would also mean that I wouldn't need the Media Mod any more for better audio in general use. I have seen a video where the sound quality is degraded via Bluetooth to the GoPro compared with internal recording on the DJI Mic 2. Hopefully this can be fixed with a firmware update. The charging cable is redundant to me as the GoPro is usually mounted on the Volta. The magnetic mount is a nice to have when moving the GoPro between the Volta and Chesty. Hopefully it is quite secure in all but extreme conditions. Does it work with the Media Mod? It will be interesting to see a more long term test to see whether the firmware is less buggy than the Hero 11.

I have been waiting for your take on this! It's great to see they have improved the heat issue with the GoPro in the latest version. However, I will wait until next year to buy one. A little disappointed they decided to change the battery, but with improved charge speeds and runtimes it makes sense.
Currently have the go pro 12. I bought it on release, I’ve had one over-heating situation and low light takes a bit of adjustment in the settings or editor, since they haven’t improved the sensor for low light settings I will likely be going with a different company for a second angle or evening projects. I still love the go pro 12 btw. I ride bmx, motorcycles, scuba diving and have flown planes and the camera has done a great job
thanks gopro for the update. love since gps is back on gopro camera. now looking forward to have gopro and quick subscription to be available on my country (Malaysia) since many years.
Thanks for your excellent video. I have a GoPro 13 now but it does NOT want to pair with The Remote from GoPro. Is that problem known to you? Alternatively I can use the GoPro App to remotely operate my GoPro 13 but I do not know what distance it can cover...?
Thank you for your Review. New Batterie ... no new Go Pro for me. Have always 2 on my bike and will not by 2 new ones. One would mean 2 Batteries and changer on my bike .. no. One Questions Quick Capture , is the long press mode back ? This starts a Hyperlapse one of my most used features. This is why I still use my 10 because the new ones, does not have this anymore ?
Great review, thanks! Until this review is was convinced about getting thr Osmo action 5 pro, now I am swaying more towards the GoPro. Perhaps a dumb question, but does the macro lens mod fit in the diving case for specific small critter dives?
Great presentation as always, bit of a bummer still regarding battery charging. Couple of questions; Do the batteries discharge in storage, my DJI cameras are still holding charge no issue. Its good you can connect the DJI mic 2, but can you connect 2 mics as with the Pocket 3. Only reason im considering the GoPro 13 is the ND filter system, really cool feature. Anxiously waiting the Action 5 release, im in China visiting my wifes family for the next month, gonna visit the DJI flagship store in Shenzhen, depends on the new spec whether i go for the GP13 or the Action 5. Hope your review is out later this week. Best wishes Darren
Great review as usual sir. But one quick question. With the new charging connector/door will it record/operate without the battery inside using a charging bank?
Sadly GoPro dropped the ball after the Hero3. I loved my Hero3's but the GoPros I purchased after that are very temperamental cameras. So much so I don't use them when I need to get really important shots. GoPro's share price has collapsed since 2015. The company has now been in the wilderness for over 10 years. A lot of the feature video in this video looked like potato cam, Burst 5 second slomo grabs nup, so yeah not much has changed. Excellent detailed review that shows off all the issues and few highlights
Hey Ray, are you able to retrofit the folding fingers/magnetic mount from the 13 into a hero 10/11/12? Would be awesome to be able to get that feature without having to buy a new camera
Just bought a hero 12 and really happy with it. I’m filming my R/C car racing on my channel. Annoyed the battery has changed again but other features look good
Hey Ray, Fellow UA-camr here, just trying to find the simple answer to a simple question and you seem very knowledgeable about this stuff. Question: If I put a Hero13 on a pole under water will an Android S23+ smartphone be able to pick up the signal and 'screenshare' what the Hero 13 is 'seeing'? Thanks in advance...
Hello! No, unfortunately not. The signal won’t transmit more than about 1cm underwater at best. I can’t think of any creative way to pull that off unfortunately (short of a custom made housing with a really long HDMI cable waterproofed out the side of it…).
@@Dcrainmaker thanks for your reply! I watched a few videos showing how to use a piece of coaxial cable for that but they seemed to all be a few years old so I was hoping the newer Hero models had an internal 'broadcasting antenna'.
While I use 3 GoPros and one Insta360 on my channel Iwas headed in the direction of the DJI Osmo action camera with the mic 2 so I can blue tooth audio to a remote mic. Since I do jet ski videos I need waterproof camera with remote audio…not sure I will stay with Go pro even though have now implemented it to be compatible with the dji mic 2…. Is the integration seamless… would you stay with the GoPro or go to the DJI camera? Great review as always! Bob
My GoPro 13 overheated before I could even put it to use. I plugged it in to charge, unplugged it, and left the room for about 30 min. Came back to find it insanely hot. I opened it to take out the battery, and the plastic had melted around the battery. Insane.
Hi, @dcrainmaker / Ray! Thanks for the review and walkthrough! 🙂 It seems that the Hero13 address a lot of details that should have been addressed for the Hero12. Can you say something about the Remote and ability to simultaneous Hero control and thus ability to control more than a single compatible Hero at a time now that the Hero13 is unveiled? The multiple camera control with the Remote is hampered for the Hero12 since introduction. Multicam control with the Hero11 and Hero10 is still good.
I’m interested in time sync so as to have time sync when using multiple different cameras and audio recording devices … is it still upgrading to custom firmware and generating a QR code on a Tentacle Sync Track E and pointing the GoPro at it to sync the time? I was hoping for Bluetooth time sync from ultra sync blue or deity .. I still have a lot to learn
Curious about the small Hero and whether the DJI bluetooth mic will work with that one.. I remember buying the GoPro Mini and being bummed I couldn't have any externals mics with it..
Wow. The new charging connector is NOT on the GoPro website for sale as of Sept. 5th.....I would definitely pay the $79 for the connector and door with the 13 if offered. That can be a game changer in terms of continuous use of the camera. Thanks for the review. The best one I've seen so far.
Thank you for a great video. The cost of all the new accessory lenses on top of the cost of a new camera, with no increased sensor size & no 8k means no purchase for me. I'll wait for the GoPro 14
I wish they would update the Media Mod to include the fingers/mount instead of using the ones on the camera. I put the camera on my helmet and have to take the thing apart just to change the battery. The quick mount seems like a bit of a help, maybe I'll look into that Ulanzi mount, thanks for that tip.
My only action camera is the insta 360 one rs twin version. My MTB videos I upload to UA-cam are horrible as in clarity quality. I read reviews where ppl say this camera is awesome! When I watch numerous videos that are clear and great, ppl are using GoPro. Should I switch to GoPro?
Great video,i always hope go pro will step up their game but they never do. DJI ACTION 4 user for 2 years and so happy with that, the image is amazing,if go pro will decide to change their sensor id be happy to buy one and try. For now,dji
I'll wait to order and see if everything is really that great with the 13, I still have my 12 🤩 I'm most interested in the new slowmotion function and the Mako lens
15:17 Salve Ray, I believe its perfectly fine for the GPH13 or any GP Hero to throttle charging rates when it's within the camera body. It's a cautionary step and safety measure. You certainly don't want your precious action cam to flat-out burst into flames when charging it up! Plus battery health is cared for with throttled down rates. Charge up those Action 4 batteries at blitzkrieg speeds back to back for several months and your battery/ies will be as good as ruined!!! Dji is notorious for swollen batteries... ask me how I know? Holla Mavic flyers....
I like the closeup factory mod and the external power port. The slowmo rates - I was expecting more, but then again I thought we'd get a new chip - so still nice they added something. Overall an OKAY evolution from 12, in particular if claimed reliability pudding is to be true. Looking forward to your comparos with the usual contenders (never tire of those 😄). Cheers! 👍
Thanks for the great review. Love your drone and go pro reviews . What mount do you use when attaching camera to the chain stay to show you pedaling? Also do you have a favorite mount to face rearward to film the MTB rider following you?
I love your videos and reviews but I strong disagree at 12:45. I use the Go Pro 10 with the Media Mod to film my General Aviation flying. I have the GoPro mounted on the inside to the ceiling to give a rough 1st person view. Media Mod is used to plug the cockpit audio straight into the Go Pro to make editing in post easier. The Go Pro 10 at 4k 60fps with Smoothing and horizon leveling overheats within 20 minutes. Even without the Go Pro Mod Case, no Battery and Battery Door removed. The Go Pro still overheated in around 25 minutes. My work around solution was to use double-sided velcro tape to stick a USB fan behind the GoPro and make sure it is blasting air at the GoPro. With the fan I can get the GoPro to record none stop. I would like to not have an active fan to cool an action camera. I look forward to seeing some overheating tests of the Go Pro 13 :) My GoPro hero session 5 is still pretty damn good and doesn't overheat but sadly it can only do 1080p 60fps
Hello! Thanks! I’m not sure what you’re disagreeing on. Your cockpit would be considered a no/low airflow (unless it’s an open cockpit), thus your fan is solving that. Which is what I said?
@@DcrainmakerHappy to see you respond :) I really enjoyed watching your videos over the years. It's a closed cockpit (Plane is a Pa-28). It's just the additional steps for setup with the fan is a pain. Also I would like to more Go Pros for additional angles when filming but for those cameras I can't easily place a fan on them. (Backseat window with view of wing, On cockpit right side viewing the interior of the plane) I even looked into 3D printed 120mm fan mounts for the GoPro. Gopros time codes has made syncing multiple Gopros in Post very easy but when flying I don't want to have to keep worrying about if cameras are cutting out on me from overheating. I don't know when the exciting bits happene so it's safest to be recording just in case something interesting happens. Maybe I should accept that the secondary cameras should be at 1080p 60 FPS to avoid overheating and use that footage sparsely. Anyway sorry for the wall of text, if you're reading this have a great day 😀
I had my gopro overheat endlessly while recording races where the camera was mounted on my chest riding between 15-35 mph. I had to switch to a different brand and now this has never been an issue.
@@AN-mx4wv the DJI osmo action 4 is my current favourite, 4k 60 battery lasts a hour and iv never had it freeze or over heat and i use it constantly, Insta 360 4x same deal but worse quality
@@AN-mx4wv i went with dji and so far its been exactly what i needed. recharges insanely fast and battery life is what it says on the box. i have no allegiance to any brand, in 2 years i'll revisit whats available and it may not be dji. i've also learned that maybe the current tech isnt yet there for 4k recording for lots of devices. i recently purchased a $5k mirrorless camera for professional photography projects. guess what? the damn camera overheats and shuts down if you leave it on 4k!
When does the comparison embargo end? I am curious to see if the new HLG HDR helps the HDR footage, at least to my eye GP12 HDR it is seems that the the gamma range seems to still be limited to the rec 709 range and see no difference when loaded in rec 2020 HLG unlike with the color range.
Thank you for the review! Your opinion is always appreciated. From my testing, I have found that there is an almost zero percent possibility of overheating your camera when a few precautions are taken. For example, if an action cam is being used in a stationary environment, it can be as simple as removing the battery and using an external battery bank. I have left my GoPros running for hours in direct sunlight while recording in its highest fidelity modes using this configuration.
13:19 for full sun events to 95-100°f is shading w/ visor / umbrella help and or mini fan moving air across? Is this Wi-Fi connective to mobile for remote LiveView & control?
A mini fan would be all you need. I did some tests a few years ago (when things were much worse), showing how even in a 104*F super humid scenario, a tiny cheap kids battery powered mini fan, was more than enough to let the GoPro run constantly.

Best wishes
Darren
Great review as usual sir. But one quick question. With the new charging connector/door will it record/operate without the battery inside using a charging bank?
You covered it all, great review. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the cool and informative video. Do you know if it gets complicated when I buy a GoPro in the US and have a warranty issue back in Europe?
Annoyed the battery has changed again but other features look good
Great video.
Is it worth considering the GoPro 13?
Bob
HI Ray, good job on this review! Did GoPro show off the Waterproof Shutter Remote? And, any word on Garmin control?
Great job again Ray 👍👍
My GoPro 13 overheated before I could even put it to use. I plugged it in to charge, unplugged it, and left the room for about 30 min. Came back to find it insanely hot. I opened it to take out the battery, and the plastic had melted around the battery. Insane.
Do you have a photo you can post/link to?
Thanks DC, always the most complete reviews!
Will that magnetic charging door be compatible with the 12? That would be so nice to use
Yup it is!
Will this new macro lens work with GoPro 11? Or this is diferent mounting?
Hey Ray. Are you going to be doing the GoPro hero mini review?
Hi, @dcrainmaker / Ray! Thanks for the review and walkthrough! 🙂
It seems that the Hero13 address a lot of details that should have been addressed for the Hero12.
I have a question the mount on your hero 12 that looks like gopros new mount, will the new gopro mount hook up to your hero 12??????
ulanzi falcam mount - not falcom? Although the Ulanzi web site does seem to list the magnetic mount that you showed.
Now I can go get my hero 13 🔥🔥🔥🔥🇯🇲
Great honest and sincere review.
Another great video - thank you. Would you say GoPro is going away from mainstream (average Joes) and becoming a niche professional UA-camrs company?
Can a GoPro be used with the Final Cut Camera iPad app as one of the 4 cameras or does it have to be an Apple device?
Is the bayonet now made out of plastic or is it still metal with just a matt black finish?
Great video. I'm sticking with my GoPro 10 for another year. I have zero issues with camera and these changes aren't enough for me to change cameras.
Does it focus to infinity and look the same as the standard lens using the distance side?
Thank you for a great video. The cost of all the new accessory lenses on top of the cost of a new camera, with no increased sensor size & no 8k means no purchase for me. I'll wait for the GoPro 14
How is 8K useful? To crop in post or do you render more than 4K?
I wish they would update the Media Mod to include the fingers/mount instead of using the ones on the camera. I put the camera on my helmet and have to take the thing apart just to change the battery. The quick mount seems like a bit of a help, maybe I'll look into that Ulanzi mount, thanks for that tip.
Totally agree!
For now,dji
Has the built in UVC mode? As webcam working without drivers . Like in DJI Action 4.
Thanks 🙏
I'll wait to order and see if everything is really that great with the 13, I still have my 12 🤩
I'm most interested in the new slowmotion function and the Mako lens
Awesome review. Thank you for this!
Thanks Sam, as an Avgeek, huge fan and follower of your videos!
Should I wait for the 14 were a new sensor implemented, or in the 15 when the anamorphic new sensor is perfected?
There's no such thing as an anamorphic sensor.
Focus peaking is only avaiable with the macro lens mod?
If also avaiable without mod, it is avaiable also on GoPro 12/11... ecc?
Only macro lens mod
Great review as always!
Excellent review!
Amazing bro really very informative video.
Does it still retain important features like system lockout, battery freezing?
The improved HDR and Macro Lens seems the best and most enticing upgrades on this guy along with the insane slow mo options.
ohh and the ND filter Auto Detect is pretty wild honestly
Can u adjust the gain and activate noise reduction of the DJImic2 connected via bluetooth? (With inst360 ace pro I cannot)
I look forward to seeing some overheating tests of the Go Pro 13 :)
My GoPro hero session 5 is still pretty damn good and doesn't overheat but sadly it can only do 1080p 60fps
Hello!
(Backseat window with view of wing, On cockpit right side viewing the interior of the plane)
I even looked into 3D printed 120mm fan mounts for the GoPro.
Anyway sorry for the wall of text, if you're reading this have a great day 😀
Does these new lenses works with the previous models?
Well done again DC Rainmaker!
Oh yea. Been waiting for this all day👏
When are they gonna add a zoom lens?
Finally, I've been waiting for your review all day
Sorry!!! Was on a long ferry boat in the sea well beyond cell range, and the wifi didn’t exactly…well, it didn’t do anything.
@@DcrainmakerIt was worth the wait
👏😁
I had my gopro overheat endlessly while recording races where the camera was mounted on my chest riding between 15-35 mph. I had to switch to a different brand and now this has never been an issue.
Yep same here
what different brand are you using?
@@AN-mx4wv the DJI osmo action 4 is my current favourite, 4k 60 battery lasts a hour and iv never had it freeze or over heat and i use it constantly, Insta 360 4x same deal but worse quality
@@AN-mx4wv i went with dji and so far its been exactly what i needed. recharges insanely fast and battery life is what it says on the box. i have no allegiance to any brand, in 2 years i'll revisit whats available and it may not be dji.
i've also learned that maybe the current tech isnt yet there for 4k recording for lots of devices. i recently purchased a $5k mirrorless camera for professional photography projects. guess what? the damn camera overheats and shuts down if you leave it on 4k!
got the 10, want to upgrade, but haven't decided yet if DJA5 or GP13
Cheers for the video
Great.... Great review 🦾💯
There is no comprison embargo? I'll post up some comparison clips to a dropbox share if you want.
how does it compare to iphone? I know it is not the same. But good to know if I should buy a new camera given my iphone is here.
I just got my GoPro 12 black yesterday and today I'm watching this video 🤔
13:19 for full sun events to 95-100°f is shading w/ visor / umbrella help and or mini fan moving air across?
Is this Wi-Fi connective to mobile for remote LiveView & control?
A mini fan would be all you need. I did some tests a few years ago (when things were much worse), showing how even in a 104*F super humid scenario, a tiny cheap kids battery powered mini fan, was more than enough to let the GoPro run constantly.
