Vyminal here back with a video review of an $8 condenser microphone ($20 overseas). In this video, I compare it to an $800 large diaphragm studio microphone.
You can also hear the mic when plugged in straight into the motherboard WITHOUT an interface as seen in the video (Phantom Power off test)
NOTE: My intention is to show that the BM-800 is a competent microphone, especially for its price. It is important to understand that the Slate Digital ML-1 is more expensive due to its ability to emulate 10 different microphone models. It is still totally worth it and its price is justified compared to cheaper microphones. I would recommend both microphones.

You can also hear the mic when plugged in straight into the motherboard WITHOUT an interface as seen in the video (Phantom Power off test)
For phantom power on tests, we used a scarlett solo audio interface
How's the sound with phantom power on but without using an audio interface/preamp and direct to motherboard?
Mine has a really loud buzzing noise when i try to record with it
WTF? HOW does a condenser even work WITHOUT phantom power? The capacitance plates in the capsule have to be CHARGED in order to transmit a signal!
@@DMSProduktions If it's an electret microphone, they actually carry a permanent charge. A FET pre-amp is then powered by DC voltage from between 2-10V.
I believe this is however a normal condenser microphone, so you are right it needs voltage. Most motherboards actually provide a few volts, around 3V called VREFOUT on the mic port, at least for ALC chipsets. Having only 3V results in substantially decreased microphone sensitivity, compared to the >12V phantom power provides. At 12V phantom power, the dB loss is only ~1dB, compared to 33V (there is a video by FFcossag). At 3V, you would have >10dB decrease.
@@yoonsikp Wow, that's really interesting! I wasn't aware some MB or sound cards supplied a low DC current to power some mics.
GOOD to know!
i can make the $800mic sound like 8$

This is a great entry level mic I think. You can get a feel of what it's like to own a condenser mic, learn a lot. No one will complain about the sound quality, at least in my experience.
rendered audio of the whole video is too soft!
Omg I love ur videos i used to watch tem all the time
BM wins because it can compete with expensive mic multiple times the price of it
Are you kidding bro? The bm 800 had some background noise compare to 800 dollar mic condenser
No way the 800$ is waaaaayyyy better and has better build quality and parts as mentioned
Nah its dogshit
clorox bleach True lol, that noise floor is higher
u just need a software like voicelab to make this 8 dollar mic sound like the 800 dollar mic
I am using BM-800 for my covers and it's working great for starters like me :)
What interface do you have ?
@@frangel02 I''m also curious..
Do you need soundcard for this to work in any laptop? Thank you!
@@indaysaaustraliaskicko7069 yes, i also have to use a soundcard to use it

It's not about the equipment, it's how you use it.
A little fiddling in your DAW would make the BM800 a lol better
Also, if you aren't in a good sound studio, the bm800 is going to sound worst, probably pick up more noise and other things.
Don't know how the BM800 handles reverb as well.
All in all, even the BM800 is better than no mic
So if I plug the BM 800 into the laptop with phantom power on still, am I still going to have noise or background sound?
As long as it's better than the mic on my phone, dslr or shitty karoke mic I'm playing with lol.
I'm not looking to sing or expect neuman quality, I just want something to try out voice over so I don't have to waste a few hundred on a mic in case I end up not wanting to continue.
I already have an interface with phantom power.
welp, one is better than none
Actually, i own two of these badboys and used in a noisy environment they still perform fine. For simple voice recordings you can't go wrong for the price, slap some compression on it, eq the hi-mids a little for extra warmth and you're good to go. Sounds like a million bucks when used wisely.
The bm-800 has alot and i mean a lot of background noise. Don't recommend it in a environment with many people and no noise reducing fiam
As the item was cheap and came with host of extras, I ordered on a whim...but am glad to hear your review. My item is on its way. So can't wait to make my first online cover video. Thank you.
Have you made it yet?
with some EQ you can get the $8 one sounding just as full and warm as the $800 one imo
Im new in this buisnis and looking forward to buyin a mic what is phantom power and EQ tou are talking about?
@@micoveliki8729
Phantom power (usually 48v), is what is required to make your condenser microphone operational -
-You'll most likely need an audio interface, which provides the necessary power to make your condenser microphone operational.
-EQ is a mixing/mastering tool, it is used to manage your sound correctly, whether you need addition or subtraction in the high-mid-low ranges of your sound (depending on the form of EQ you have, I'm talking about parametric in this case)
Thank you for the good explanations, this will help me in the future.
If u have hifi headphones u can see the difference
@@micoveliki8729 Every sound is made of frequencies, eq is lowering or boosting those frequencies to get sound of your liking
I see all these comments saying “I’d much rather save the money”. After using a few microphones in my days producing, the sort of tone and warmth you get from the higher end mic can’t be replicated with software. By raising EQ and frequency levels, you get a lot of room resonance, noise and other sounds that just aren’t accurate. No amount of compression and EQ can give the natural warmth. If you’re doing a podcast, or basic UA-cam channel, sure. This is perfect for you, and you probably will never need anything much better than a $10-$100 mic. But if you’re serious about music and want to hit the radio, you have to spend a little more. Trust me. I’ve been using a $100 mic for 4 years, and upgrading is the best decision I ever made. It makes post production SO much easier because I don’t have to worry about constant EQ adjustments.
can i know what mic are u using?

NOTE: My intention is to show that the BM-800 is a competent microphone, especially for its price. However, it is not recommended to use it without phantom power. It is important to understand that the Slate Digital ML-1 is more expensive due to its ability to emulate 10 different microphone models. It is still totally worth it and its price is justified compared to cheaper microphones. I would recommend both microphones.
Have you tried using the BM-800 without phantom power but using microphone boost through the Realtek/stock motherboard audio driver or windows recording settings? Also, what DAC, amp, or DAC/amp combo would you recommend using with the BM-800 considering this cheap price point?
Since the internal circuitry really needs phantom power to amplify the weak signal from the condenser it is kind of moot to try to use it without phantom power. Give your mic what it needs and it will shine like gold. Actually, it IS gold(colored), ghe!
@@TSLMachine HAHAHA bro don't do that shit. Just buy an audio interface like a Focusrite scarlett or someshit. You need Phantom power otherwise your not powering the microphone to pick up the detail and crispiness you need on your tracks or vocals.
@TheRealDirtySkillz Hey, I don't understand this about phantom power, how does it work. If I buy this microphone and plug it in my pc through 3,5mm jack will it use phantom power and will there be any static noise or is it going to harm my motherboard or pc that way, cuz many people use usb sound card but that seems to make a lot of static noise.
@@TheRealDirtySkillz if your just an average person which is not techy as you. you can use the mic without interface as long as you have a splitter. if you're a proffesional user, then you must have the interface. you can enhance the audio of the bm 800 with a software called Sound Meter
I heard absolutely ZERO difference.
Did you have the video muted? 😂
Use headphones lmao
earth ONE He must don’t know what noise floor etc is 😂
no, there is actually a huge difference if you are actually working with the microphone in a treated environment. A lot less noise flour, much different response curve..
The BM800 has several different versions most of are treble-heavy, sometimes are simply electret ones, and some don't support 48v. Mine is from Kirin which supports 48v
I'm a music producer and have been wondering what type of Mic I need to be able to sing as I'm also a singer/Rapper. This is really useful info,I never knew a 8 dollar mic could sound as good as it does. Thank you!
Probably the best review channel here on youtube for peripherals without any bias. More power!
solid production quality and well presented review, thanks a lot!
the expensive mic sounded crisp and warm. but the BM-800 was not bad. for 1% of the price of the expensive mic, you cant go wrong with that
So this popped up in my suggestions being I often look up new audio gear.
1. You people are DEAF if you can not hear a difference or you're using Wish branded headphones
2. This is NOT a true condenser microphone, The capsule is equivalent to a damn chat mic
3. Floor noise is HORRID on this thing
4. Its NOT going to save your work, It's horrid, You wasted w/e you paid
5. The more expensive mic is well worth it.
6. Stop cutting corners if you want to make music and voice work, If you can't afford it. American Musical and Zzounds can help with NO CREDIT HISTORY
7. I'm using JBL LSR308's and A pair of Beyerdynamic MMX300's And the difference is NIGHT AND DAY.
8. This cheap mic is VERY VERY thin, NO EQ and compression will fix it, Stop saying it will. Unless again. You're using wish branded studio gear then yeah, You wont know.. lmao
People you can not cut corners and go with cheap knock off junk like this, Even for a starter mic! It is okay for skype, And possibly gaming, But nothing more!
There are better alternatives for the same price on eBay.
Now, with that said. There is ONE good use for this mic. You can get it for $8-10 and MODIFY it.
There are capsules and kits and all that you can get for these and upgrade it to be about similar to an at2020 level quality. But, Even then that's around $30-40 more to spend and do.
Hate me all you want, I'm just sick of seeing people use these and post work, music, etc and wonder why nobody WANTS TO CHECK THEM OUT!
If you don't take your work serious and respect top notch gear, You don't know quality and you do not know what you're doing.
the law of diminishing return - the more you pay for the less you get.
Less warmth in the BM-800.. sure. But with a very basic understanding of free programs like Audacity, you can very easily make a budget mic sound nearly identical.
But bro, most people will probably use this because they don't have enough money to buy phantom power or A gull Sound Proof Studio, their is not much point in this test...
The BM-800 is an electret microphone. I can tell because with the phantom power off, it still picks up sound, just quieter (due to the capsule's preamp not getting any voltage). A polarizing condenser microphone wouldn't make any noise at all.
Hey quick question here even though you might not see this, I've been searching to find out what is phantom power and how to activate it but I'm still not quite sure, if it is possible could someone explain it to me please.
I paid $ 39 (BRL 210.00) ;-;
You could run an entire studio with 8 of those cheap mics and no one would know the dif aside from seasoned tracking engineers
noise floor high
it depends on you if you think the added 792USD is worth or not to get the more sound quality.. of course the 800usd mic sounds better. but a 8usd mic to perform as close as the 800usd mic is not a joke. if the maker of the 8usd mic fine you for more 792usd, imagine how that mic would sound. definitely the 8usd mic is a winner here.
This is the first ever time I've seen a review for my own current main mic. I got the cheaper one as a quick buy after my other got dropped from a height onto the floor - I'm so glad it passes the test.
where did you order it? Thank you!
Is BM-800 GOOD??
@@lesoleil194 did you ordered?
@@nachos8831 No, I didn't
It's actually quite good lol, I'll be getting one for start
not many can afford a well treated room, any mic would sound crisp in that acoustically treated room
Thank you so much for your review and advice mate. I was looking for a cheap (but cheerful!) setup for my video recording, and your advice was just exactly what I needed. I'll say this thing everyone says to each other these days - but I truly mean it - you do deserve more subscribers! :)
yeah I try to listen why eyes closed. no big difference. thank you.
WOW, Im Suprised HOW Good The BM800 Actually Is., Its Like A Perfect Mic For The Price.
The problem with cheap mics though is that there are significantly better ones for not too much more. The iSK Pearl is a killer small diaphragm condenser that could fit an a real studio, and costs $30 USD. The MXL V67G (when there are big sales or you buy used) can be found for $50 USD is also another cheap mic that could fit in a real studio. But there's less of a noticeable difference between the Oktava MK-220 (250 euros), the AT4050 ($700), AT4047MP ($850) and U87ai ($3200) than there is between the BM-800 and and good sub $100 mic.
Of course, for $8 the BM800 is a good buy, I don't think anyone would disagree, but it's better to just save up for an iSK Pearl pencil mic if a the budget has to be under $50.
Hello, I have trouble with my neewer nw-800 mic.
1. I have a window 10 laptop that has only one audio jack.
2. I tried connecting to the audio jack and my laptop did not detect the mic.
3. I have connected an audio splitter and same result.
Is the v8 soundcard compulsory?
Can some one actually help with how I can resolve this? I am connecting using the neweer nw-100 power supply.
Thanks in advance.
It's all depends upon 0$ human voice

You forgot to mentioned (or you probably have not tried it) that the cheaper microphone is hard to use for recording ! Cause it takes so much noise from your earphones, even if you push the earphones in your ears so tight, so the playback of the instrument while you’re recording is heard in your voice track when you record and will make it really really tough to mix the track !
I purchase GoXLR so now is time to go for non USB mic, was about order RODE NT1A, but now, I will order that BM-800, probbably not from china but locally which will be little bit more expensive, but whatever. On my headphones I do not heard any difference betweein those two mics on review at all, thx for video
hi, i have this microphone but i don't know how to connect it to my garageband. what would i need to use it?

I know the differences here.
BM-800 vs. USD-800. See?
Just buy a HEIL PR40 & you will never need any Phantom Power and you get Amazing audio Quality.
i think buying a 800$ mic is waste of mone because Bm 800 sound Quality was almost same ,,,and in our erea Bm 800 is for with stand is around for 31$
it worths it .....Love this mic
the audio interface boosted the mic... I dont recommend using a 400 peso mic partnered with a 8000 peso scarlet audio interface :D
Glad to see another Filipino UA-camr 🇵🇭
Wise men say, you pay peanuts you get monkeys. BM800 is not peanut after all.
Can we use this without soundcard?
Just directly?
Most people won't know the difference if you don't tell them. Audio technology has advanced exponentially in the last 20+ years. Getting audio equipment that doesn't produce much noise is important. Proper EQing can make up for sound difference. We live in an amazing time for home recording.
Almost everyone: I hear no difference
Those musicians: WTF THERES SM DIFFERENCE AGHHH
I orderet the set from Temu, the v8 soundcard will be not good, i check my one if it is there, looks like a new`er model, but withous the V8 s i wonder, looks good and for me, little bit gaming and i look, little bit yt video, is all i need ^^
If i make more i can buy a better one, but for start or take a better gaming setup, all okey and with the V8 s i can train how so items are working and check a better on or use my vinyl mixer ;)
Thx for the Video
is it good for voice acting? i really want to do voice acting with a little budget
Guitar comparison was not done the same... You had the guitar hole directly facing the cheap microphone (making the booming sound), where you had the expensive microphone facing halfway up the neck of the guitar, and also looks further away from the microphone... Please do that comparison again EQUALLY.
Bug difference. Bm-800 sounds like an 8 dollar mic. Mic doesn't have definition. It's like mushy bright. Opposite of crisp.
I have a pair of BM 800 mics. The comments cover the spectrum. For the price of a decent lunch you can record your voice and, given your posting know how, you can be successful in producing a quality track. I've recently posted to my associates some tracks with the BmM 800 level mic and a more expensive Klassik Kondenser. None of their reviews made any mention of the vocal quality. Yes, there is a subtle to large difference. Will it make any difference in the final track? "It may be so and then again it may not be so." I think Billy Shears penned that. IMO it is a worthy addition to most mic lockers.
I am new to this all. My question will probably sound completely stupid to most of you. Could someone tell me what phantom power is? I bought a new computer, I want to learn how to record my voice for books and such. I'm wanting something very simple like this to get started with. Something I plug into my computer and it works lol. But I'm reading comments about "phantom power". Could someone please explain? Thank you all very much.
According to my iPhone speaker they sound the same.
Seriously though, I have a BM-800, rockin little mic for as cheap as they are!
can someone explain the phantom power? I have an external sound blaster soundcard would this supply enough power?

my mic just died rn and ofc im gonna get this bm800, the next one can wait... thanks for the video!
I now know I bought the right microphone Thank you
Hey, you are not correct. You don't have to say "with phantom power On or Off". The Condenser mics won't work without Phantom Power. In other words if you have a Condenser Mic, it has to have power via your audio mixer or any other power source to operate.
May be with better audiocard we will hear the difference '~'
Is this was they use on producer grind lol?
People talking about phantom power to make the mic sound better, Nah just use EQ and compression if you know how
I think BM800 lacks base and needs to be manipulated with mixer.
Thanks man... Bought this and thoight I wasted my money,,, your sound awesome..
there is unnecessary hum with BM-800
can I use the phantom power on a soundblaster external card? it has no rlx input.
This comes to the speakers too xD can't judge immediately
Just like with wine, after a certian price the quality increase starts to diminish, and each 1% increase of quality starts to cost what was a 200% increase in quality.
that what I use with a lice the sound card v8. I am probably getting a new pre amp/eq as it is pretty quiet, but it works well
I really thought you where going to make fun of the mic. Respect for your review! New subscriber. This shows how a well implemented mic can perform at its best.
this looks really good and INSANLY CHEAP

$800 mic didn't sound 100 better than $8 mic. Lol.
The sound of either mic isn't good in this video. Try matching your EQ curves on either mic to the other and then see how they sound. Plus, your volume levels on this video are too low.

I'm not sure I understand this Phantom power issue. Does the mic come with Phantom power capabilities?
its an adapter that u can get around 25$
I have had the cheapest of mics in my day and some of them sound better than some other high end mics in some areas. They are pretty much the same from a simple perspective, but the quality and material is what set things apart. Sound wise they are never really that different if built with the basic intent to do the job. You are going to EQ and mix things regardless. If you have experience you can make a any mic sound good. Audio technica is a great mic that doesn't break the bank. It is actually the best mic I ever owned. It can do just about everything. Very balanced mic. It sounded better than my buddy's $1000 AKG XLS mic. He's always the using the audio technica in most situations.
not very good mic positioning on the acoustic, you would not expect a good sound
I use MB 800 microphone and I love it
I make casual song covers on UA-cam and I've been using the BM-800 for 4 months / 40 videos now. ^__^
As the first mic I've ever bought, I'm quite happy with it especially since I only used to record with my Samsung S8 / Samsung S5 phones. :D For now, I will stick with my BM-800 since I have no budget and I am not aiming to be a professional artist.
I find that the BM-800 has a difficult time handling more powerful/ strong vocals, but it is quite good for softer/ more mellow songs. With its sort of sparkly sound, I think it might also serve as a good ASMR microphone, tbh.
I don't know if this happens with other microphones as well, but with the BM-800 I notice that any word that starts with the letter "W" sounds strange and unnatural (robotic) and I have yet to find a workaround for that. If you have any suggestions, that would be great ^__^v
I will save 8 dollars😁
I want a mic that can handle my belting and loud sounds. What feature should I look for on the spec sheets? Is it the sensitivity, frequency, or what? Any recommendations as well.
BM 800 is very good it just depends on people because they dont know how to use a damn microphone they sound 1$ when they use em’
