    The next time a youtuber complains he or she doesn't have anything to read due to no new comics, I'm linking your channel as my response.
    You have a very nice library. You make your bookshelves, correct? Any way you can ship me three? While you are at it, include the books. No need to thank me, I just want you to have more room for more books. That's how we roll in Texas:)

    Thank you, Earl Grey, for sharing this tour of your collection. It is always a pleasure to listen to you talk about comics, and to see your collection as a whole is inspiring. You have inspired me to explore new areas of the comics world and I am very grateful for that (even if my bank balance maybe isn't).

    @Xbale 4 роки тому +1

    Hey there! A year back I wouldn't have believed you'd eventually do this, the more however I am pleased by you having finally overcome your initial doubts regarding the benefit of this type of video. It is uncanny how time flies, as, if I recall correctly, I haven't commented since New Year's, despite having occasionally watched a video. You recently covered many books that were new to me and I thus want to dive further into. Found it particularly interesting that you expanded your collection terms with countless installments of single issues / floppies. Needless to say that I am impressed by how insanely huge and versatile it has become. Although I felt your primary interest has always been to build an eclectic library (which I can of course relate to). By now you could certainly compete with all those crazy forum collectors. Following this amazing arrangement of shelves, my curiosity increases on how much percent you have actually read yet that is supposedly not determinable. Just one question that lingered all the way through... Do you seriously read all those volumes of one theme? I understand that some things are presumably bought mainly for the sake of having them or for collection purposes only. Yet, in the case of 2000AD prog for example or even the undoubtable qualities of long-running european series, I (by my standards) can hardly condone the repetitiveness after a while.
    Notwithstanding that, an incredible collection video I'm certain many of us have desperately waited for!

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  4 роки тому

      oh, I can endure a lot of repetitiveness... I usually enjoy actually the mix of familiarity and old formulas twisted in "new" ways. Current example is "Buck Danny" which is insanely repetitive or - even more - the other series drawn by Victor Hubinon "Der rote Korsar". I think I once answered to a comment of yours that I think of this series as to childish for me... obviously I've changed my mind, but it's still a comic aimed at teenagers, no doubt about it.
      As to the question how much of the books I've actually have read already: that's difficult. More than 95% of the modern scifi, crime and standalone books, others significantly less (esp. the collections with golden age material etc.).
      But there would be no reason to have these books if I would not intend to read them! So I work my way through them slowly but steadily.
      As I wrote in another comment: somehow I have a certain feeling of closure now. It was the main reason to do this kind of video now.... enough to read and re-read for a while, I guess.

    Confession time: Previously, I never really "got it" as to why people want to own huge comic collections. We live in an age where public libraries and digital comics exist: are there really that many "special books" one simply has to own?
    But this looks just lovely. The sunlight gently streaming into the room, birds singing outside: everything looks inviting and peaceful and cozy. Now I understand why a giant comic room would be appealing: judging from this video at least, this looks downright idyllic. I take it you greatly prefer these new living arrangements to the old?
    The albums in the wooden box at 18:17 are Asterix, right? Childhood copies, hence the tattered condition.
    I too store my floppies like, for example, the Murder Falcons at 20:48: no bags or boards, pinned between trades and hardcovers. Have you had any long-term problems storing floppies this way?

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  4 роки тому +1

      "I take it you greatly prefer these new living arrangements to the old?" ... I can't tell you how long we have tried to move into this old house. so glad we made it. But there's a lot of stuff to do and renovate.
      Asterix! check, the candidate has 100 points. Buying floppies is generally a new thing for me... but in some of the boxes I have floppies for some years & didn't have problems so far (maybe one who cares about condition more than I do would see all the dings and dangs, but I don't)

    Jeebus. I think a well-curated collection/library can be a work of art in & of itself, and your comics library definitely qualifies. Your comic interests mirror my own pretty closely, with a few of the usual differences in taste (e.g., I've yet to really appreciate the brilliance of Carl Barks (a horrible oversight, I know), and I think Jim Woodring is one of the top-five all-time great cartoonists), so seeing all those complete European collections, & the comprehensive feel there is to every comic category... wow. My comics library is pretty deep, but I think it's roughly half that size. I've been more focused on artbooks lately... this video reminded me how many amazing comics I've missed or simply forgotten about. Great stuff, man.

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  4 роки тому +1

      thanks for the nice words to describe my hoarding habits :)
      actually I have a certain feel of closure now... funny that it coincides with the pandemic right now. But the number of new books I'm buying decreased in the last couple of months & it will in the future. This feeling about the state of my collection was eventually the reason to do this video right now.

    • @fuzzuck
      @fuzzuck 4 роки тому

      @@earlgrey862 Your hoarding habits validate MY hoarding habits. But hoarders don't collect, they just never throw shit away (or so I rationalize it to myself)... collecting is an entirely different (usually male) pathology, one Chris Ware broke down in depressing detail. But it's great you feel satisfied with where your collection stands. Now that you've 'caught up' with comics history, it's easier to keep track of the few truly good comics that turn up. Cartooning is a slow craft, especially when it's done right.

    Your Hellboy / Mignola universe collection is absolutely awesome, I only have the first 3 Library Editions and Volume 1 and 2 of Plague of Frogs, I wanna complete those two and get at least Hell on Earth 1946-1948. In your opinion, if you read everything, what's your favorite runs from your Mignola collection? I couldn't read the spines from the small ones, but I'm guessing stuff like Lobster Johnson, Koshchei, Rasputin, Sledgehammer or Witchfinder. So, aside from Hellboy, what else do you top suggest? Including Abe, BPRD and all of those.
    Thanks and incredible collection overall!

      actually I want all of the Mignola stuff, but each in the best format... so I usually don't buy the softcover trades hoping that they will come up eventually with some hardcover edition. So I waited successfully for the Witchfinder and the Abe Sapien hardcover... but it's still tough to wait for Lobster Johnson - because they have to collect these in a similar edition, right?
      And my favorite series are still Hellboy & BPRD, sometimes BPRD & Hellboy... but don't ask me about singleing out specific arcs.

    Impressive collection! I always enjoy watching these kind of videos. I still need to do a bookshelf tour of my collection. One thing I am curious about: when you discuss a book, you film it from above. How do you place your camera? I have been trying it, but it never worked. Maybe I have the wrong kind of camera for those shots?

      ha! I use an ancient samsung s3 mobile since my very first video... and a very simple "trick": I use a cheap easel, actually just the legs and one leg up on the approximate height of my eyes. And I fix my mobile to that leg, so that I could sit behind it and look onto the mobilescreen while talking about the books...
      you can see the simple contraption in the very first seconds of panellogy 210

    what an amazing collection!! i’m very envy of some books you have that probably won’t ever come out in my contry (brazil).

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  3 роки тому +1

      ... really hard to tell... depends on the genre/shelf you speaking of: for an example I maybe read 80 - 90% of my European comics and the mixed Graphic Novel section and the american scifi/crime comics at least once (I probably give a different answer to that question every time I've been asked). The important thing for me is that I won't stop reading until I've read all of them. But it's very different with these collected reprints of golden or silver age comics, which I love, but frankly: I'm much too awfully behind in reading these.

      prinzipiell seit früher Kindheit (also seit ca.45 Jahren), dann gab es aber immer wieder Schübe (z.B. während meiner Zivildienstzeit und während des Studiums, aber der größte seit ich festgestellt habe, dass ich Comics auch sehr gut auf Englisch lesen kann, also in den letzten sieben oder 8 Jahren)

    A very impressive collection
    But as a terrible pedant I have to say the plural of omnibus is omnibuses, it has something to do with mixing Latin and ancient Greek, the 'i' ending is wrong?
    Sorry but it "grates", it is a common mistake I hear it often, omnibus is just 'es', same with octopus it is octopuses,

    Wow. That’s a lot more books than we saw in the videos before. I was wondering how you could show new comics every video while you only had that small cellar. But you must have had a lot hidden from the camera.
