I don't think back then Snyder intended to release the film in 4:3, but probably in the format we see here, which is an actual good compromise in the context of exploitation of the film in cinemas. The conversation scene of Bruce and Dianna works in this trailer because of that scene splitted and put into the conversation between Arthur and Bruce scene. I don't think back then Snyder intended to release the film in 4:3, but probably in the format we see here, which is an actual good compromise in the context of exploitation of the film in cinemas.
The 4:3 format, ideal in Snyder's artistic vision, was probably consented by HBO Max in an attempt to let the director's vision and originality express fully to attract viewers and new subscribers.
Most movies shot in the IMAX aspect ratio don't release their trailers in the IMAX aspect ratio because it's easier to see the trailer in theaters and on youtube in the full-frame or widescreen ratio but will have the 4;3 IMAX ratios in IMAX theaters. Since this trailer or movie wasn't shown in theaters it would only make sense to release the trailer in the IMAX aspect ratio. Not trying to start a fight lol, just wanted to give you some background knowledge :).
