@@mecahhannah There was also a comic that came out a few years where Superman and Batman go on a double date at a super hero themed fair with their respective significant others: Lois Lane and Selina Kyle (this was when she and Bruce Wayne were engaged). The fair had a policy that attendees wear costumes, so Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent switch costumes (to protect their secret identities) along with Lois Lane wearing the Catwoman suit and Selina Kyle wore whatever Lois came with. The episode gives the two the chance to do some friendly ribbing with brooding Bruce dressed as cheerful Superman and dorky Clark dressed as Batman (even having the glasses set on the cowl). They also mock that line from Man of Steel where "the S stands for Hope."

I’ve always thought of Superman and Batman as best friends. Bruce isn’t afraid of Clark’s power and feels he needs to defeat him. He trusts him with his life. What really impresses me about the relationship between Batman and Superman in the DCAU and the DCAU in general is that none of this was planned out. The DCAU wasn't like the MCU, they didn't have the backing of WB to create a huge interconnected universe.
They never knew if a show was going to get renewed for another season. If a DCAU show got a viewership drop or even if they had poor toy sales for a quarter, the show would be at risk of cancellation.
But despite never knowing if their shows would get renewed, they were able to build theses relationships and plotlines through multiple shows. And they were able to connect ongoing stories with one off episodes that were never intended to be part of an arc.

There's this scene about their friendship, with one line that always gives me goosebumbs - it's from Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, so technically not really DCAU canon, but still it really fits with this: Batman decides to get into a rocket about to be launched to steer it towards a huge meteor headed for earth, in order to destroy that meteor by crashing the rocket into it. Batman does this because moments before, Luthor destroyed the machine that would serve as an auto-pilot/guidance system for the rocket, so the rocket can no longer reach the meteor on its own. Crashing into that meteor with said rocket would, of course, be fatal for Batman. Superman, already weakened at this point due to exposure to the kryptonite rays from Luthor's mech suit, fails to stop Batman from getting into cockpit, once again due to Luthor's interference and the last thing Superman hears is Batman telling him Good Bye. Superman manages to prevent Luthor from stoping the rocket's launch, but can only watch the rocket take off, with Batman on it, as it flies Batman to his certain death. After this, Superman stares down Luthor, cold-voiced tells him "That man is my best friend. And you just killed him!" and begins to lay the smack down on him, despite being weakened and exhausted.

Well to be fair, BVS was the origin to their story of meeting each other. Zack Snyder's Justice League fixed that and could have really made their friendship blossom. Superman helped Bruce find his humanity again and Bruce never stopped believing in Superman(after his death) and believed more than the other league members that he could be brought back. Superman was given a second chance at life to be the hero Earth needed him to be and it was because of Bruce's faith in him. The last scene Clark and Bruce share together could have really been the start of a beautiful friendship. The only thing I gripe about is Superman's eventual turn but regardless, ZSJL could have been the point where we got a more classic Superman and Batman friendship.

@@devinmccurry5546 Dark doesn't equal maturity. Dark, Edgy equal ADULT. Not everything that is dark and edgy is rooted in maturity. It's all about good writing. And the DCMAU was not dark or Edgy. It was simply mature. It follows the pattern that is more close to what the mcu did on the first 24 movie run that ended at end game. Hell Kevin feige said the entire MCU was built off the back of Richard Donner's Superman. That apokolips war movie was decent as a else world story but the vast majority of people would not want to see that story in live action. The majority of people don't want to see the hero lose and get brutalized. Heros are supposed to make people feel good, or least feel some type of hope. The DC live action forgot that and it was nothing but doom and gloom almost the entire run and that's why it failed.

I can't sing enough praise for the DCAU. So many DC fans have already given their opinions and love to this entire universe but it has to be said once again, that the DCAU is such a beautiful love letter to DC comics and fans of both the show and source material. The episode For The Man Who Has Everything, Bruce was constantly on Clark's side calling to him, to wake him up, telling him to keep fighting the dream. Man, so many great moments between them. @Implicitly Pretentious, my man, I believe you have heard of this movie already but just in case, Batman/Superman Public Enemies have a very similar if not more charming and brotherly love kind of relationship between Batman and Superman. That was the highlight of the movie itself, very good stuff.

    • @Marcus-gw4bb
      @Marcus-gw4bb Рік тому +23

Also, I never really liked the idea of them constantly placed in a position where they have to fight each other. Frank Miller started that trend and DC have been milking that ever since. They are more than that. They both want the same thing, to protect others with little to no regard of their own safety. It's just they have very different ways of executing their respective vision, both are very effective but ultimately different ideology leads to different means of achieving their shared vision/goal.
Sure, that means they will be at odds with each other sometimes but when the chips are down, they will always have each other's backs. And that's the kind of relationship that I believe every DC fan will appreciate. Or maybe I am just speaking for myself.

This way they could use the most popular stories from the comics, in part or whole, while not getting the MCU's "they did this b/c the story demands it" type of writing. This let the characters stay consistent.

I truly hope that when the Snyderverse is completely undone they'll try to be more like the DCAU with Clark and Bruce. The animated shows got in right in that department. Both were just committed to doing the right thing and leading by example. Not like Snyder!Batman with slaughtering and trying to kill other heroes or a Superman who isn't compassionate and friendly toward people because he genuinely is that good and was raised by loving parents.
Ironically the DCEU did do better with Wonder Woman and Aquaman though so I'll give them props there. The DCAU's Diana wasn't on her own adventures enough and they made her really critical of "Man's World" and stubborn where as Gadot's Diana is gentle and embraces a different culture with integrity and earnestness. And the DCAU Aquaman was just kind of shoved off to the side and they went with the "edgy" pissed off hook hand version rather than a more charismatic fun hero like the Momoa version was.

There are stories that explore this side of Diana and give her a good development, like the 2009 Animated movie, where Diana starts a bit sturbbon and having difficult relationship with Steve but in the end comes to see not just that Steve is good man but also how recognize that she (and also her mother and sister) were wrong in giving up on humanity, that they let their prejuice for men prevent from doing the right thing.

@Erik Kemeey Batman tried to kill Superman in BvS, it was literally his entire goal for the first 3/4ths of the film. He probably would've killed him if Lois Lane wasn't around to stop him. Having Batman more determined to kill another hero than a villain like the Joker (who in this universe killed a Robin) and is willing to kill henchmen indiscriminately is only the tip of the iceberg on misunderstanding the character.
I'm a bit more forgiving with the Snyderverse take on Superman than I am with Batman, but they didn't nail his demeanor with how he was depicted as angsty. The way Christopher Reeve depicted him is an example of showing how down to earth and approachable he is; BUT I could see the Henry Cavil Superman being salvaged far more easily than I could the Affleck take on Batman just because he hadn't willingly done as many OOC things comparatively.

In the 2009 movie Steve's depicted like a chauvinistic buffoon and Diana constantly looks down on and browbeats EVERYONE she meets and seems like she doesn't have any culture shock over the way our world is advanced and different from hers. She gets here and immediately lectures a little girl for crying about being left out by the boys (like, this is the first human child she's ever encountered and the first thing she does is lecture and judge) She's incredibly rude and argumentative to Etta Candy, who they use only to depicted like "Those Other Girls" not like "Pick Me" Diana who doesn't approve of such horrible things like... a woman flirting with a guy she thinks is cute?
2009!Steve just spouted off objectifying things about Diana and tried to get her drunk to seduce her. Their romance came off as really smarmy with her being kind of prejudiced and him being unlikable (it felt like "if a male sexist and a female sexist dated it would be LOVE" rather than it would be a disaster).
In the live action Patty Jenkins movie where Steve is a really good guy and a soldier who wants a normal life and Diana is hopeful and kind and enthusiastic to learn. And Steve respects her and their relationship is sweet and Diana isn't judgmental to anyone outside of being disturbed by chemical warfare on civilians. And on top of that the 2009 version of the Greek Gods is bizarre, why is Hades Male-humanoid-Ursula from the Little Mermaid? WTF?
That being said I did really enjoy the Wonder Woman animated movie with Silver Swan and Medusa though that one was really good! Still top tier versions of both characters..maybe my fav versions of them 🤔🧐
Young Justice has pretty great portrayals of them too, but since the story’s about the younger generation they don’t have as much time to shine

This animated universe was my childhood. Meant a lot to me then and more now. This show made me think as a kid. Showed me a complicated world with actual relationships and moral dilemmas. I wish children's entertainment focused more on challenging them.

Thank you for doing this…. This video is amazing i know a lot of kids don’t read comics nor was able to see the animated series and only saw batman and superman as 2 guys who hate each other and their moms have the same name (thanks zach) but this is who they are brothers that despite being polar opposites whenever they together they both make each other shine brighter

My second favorite duo in the DCAU was Hawkgirl and Flash in JL series. I lived for that the little brother, big sister dynamic. Their relationship was just so damn adorable. Even when Hawkgirl betrayed the league, Flash was doing his best to mend her relationship with the rest of the team, especially between her and Wonder Woman. Damn, nothing was better than the JL series.

As much as I love Zack Snyder's interpretation of the of Superman, Batman and the Justice league (I realize that this is a controversial opinion to have but whatever), the blue print for the Clark, Bruce and and every other character was provided in the DCAU. I hope someone over at WB realizes it.

I personally think Snyder's interpretation of Superman and the DC could use a little more improvement with the potential that is there if exploited and fleshed out correctly. Only gripe is Batman killing. If there was a prequel to explain why Snyder's Batman kills, then I could understand that, but we're just given it. At least Snyder doesn't turn his characters into clowns, unlike a certain so and so from the 2017 movie with the unnecessary cheesy lines lmao.

    • @anthonyclarke2253

@@tyrannusking6683 Agreed. I think prior to superman making an appearance, Batman may not have killed. Seeing the carnage of metropolis after the battle of Zod and Kal el probably pushed Bruce over the edge and he became more cruel.

There's a moment in the animated adaption of Superman Batman Public Enemies where Lex destroys a remote control for a rocket ship forcing Batman 2 pilot it manually. Superman, who was previously getting bodied by Lex luthor, grabs one of Luther's Kryptonite Fists and crushes it, stating that Batman was his best friend and Luther just killed him. He then proceeds to completely turn the tables and has Lex Luthor running away.

"I'm an old lefty" I totally forgot that Green Arrow said this and I love it. I love that Batman understands that even his perspective of skepticism doesn't make him as anti establishment as Ollie is, and how important it is to have that sort of perspective in such a dangerously powerful operation.

i love these DCAU series to this day and it's so fantastic to stumble across people who love the show and were impacted by it, too. I enjoy how you talk about the series with a sense of humor (which i love lol) but you don't shy away from its dark themes or harsher subjects in your analysis. I also enjoy your videos on specific characters or relationships (THANK YOU FOR COVERING HUNTRESS AND QUESTION 💙) and how you talk about their struggles and growth. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us!
