After watching ten or so videos by people reinterpreting stoicism and evaluating it in some modern context, for a social political argument. I was resigned to hear more of that nonsense here. But instead I find someone who has studied and understood the history and development of the philosophy. In order to understand it. I just want to learn as much as I can. @@mcleantlsmith Stoicism just is, either someone actively engages in it, or they don’t.
Being stoic, is intentionally looking at your self to finding solutions, at least the solutions you can actually implement. Being stoic also requires that you don’t worry about other people’s actions. This doesn’t mean that you turn a blind eye to the wrongs of the world. You take the action at your level to make the change. A direct conversation without harsh judgement towards misogynists would be one action a stoic person could take, versus condemning the behavior where the actual misogynist won’t actually see the comments for reflection.
Easier said than done. I struggle with this myself mightily.

@@NotGarrettG maybe my word choice wasn’t well enough. But this is not what I was saying. Stoicism is a way to create a “better” and “good” world. But in the same way any religion, philosophy or ethic view can be used negatively, so can stoicism. And there are many men on the Internet that use stoic principles to drive their dogmatic, problematic and hateful rhetoric. And I think it is the responsibility of those that do agree with stoic principles to correct those behaviors.

Also the weird notion that philosophy is a self-oriented, navel-gazing pursuit. No it needs external challenge, open debate, criticism, and some “put your money where tour mouth is” actions.

    • @TerribleTom113
      @TerribleTom113 12 годин тому

@creatrixZBD Well, that depends on the philosophy in question and ones' reason for pursuing it.
For example, the philosophies of Stoicism, and Decartes are two radically different things, and both are radically different from themselves if approached academically or as praxis; yet all are "philosophy."
Some philsophy is very much navel gazing, while others are dialectical and even confrontational.
It depends largely on what, and why.

    Regarding your ending:
I’d say we’ve detached stoic teaching from its more spiritualized under pinnings because we find it useful. People today tend to be pragmatic. They’re also not interested in religion since they already have one they barely pay attention to or they’ve replaced faith with science-but if the philosophy is helpful, it’s helpful.

this is very good, i usually struggle with how to orient and place my understanding (little) of stoic teachings, and as one who only recently (less than a year) started to read and read hard into philosophy, i can't read works at the rate that i find about them.
more importantly, several friends are developing an interest in philosophy and find my self with the difficult task or orienting them, which is more difficult with stoicism, which finds itself heavily overshadowed by the works Plato, Aristotle and Arabic (middle ages), and doesn't have a simple answer for (what to read about stoicism).
a video such as this, serves the purpose as a primer for accurate stoic philosophy. and from here my friends can expand.

Great going in providing this discussion--I know it is a lot of work. Just to add a little in the way of references: Professor Massimo Pigliucci has a book entitled How To Be A Stoic (Basic Books, 2017), and he has a video course with The Great Courses as well. It's accessible, but the terminology I find confusing, partly because the terms have changed their meaning since the first century CE. I have read the book and watched the course. I think that there is a genuine desire for guidance on how to lead a better, more serene life, and ancient philosophy addresses these concerns, when no one else seems to do so. 😊

    Lovely analysis.
Stoicism is what lead me into being interested in Philosophy, and eventually lead me to other schools of thought and philosophical thinking.
I hate how it's become so mainstream and is grossly misunderstood and espoused by these weird "sigma-male" types who, vindicate their shitty behavior and ultimate lack of empathy for "being a stoic".
Even the term "stoic" is ill-defined in modern dictionaries as someone who doesn't show emotions, reinforcing the notion to people who aren't aware of the origins that it's another word for displaying socio-pathic tendencies, which is why I think many people turn sour at the thought or notion of stoicism when their main projection of this line of thought is by these very people who tarnish the name.
Sad, because you could argue these ancient stoics we're probably more in tune with their own nature, emotional regulation and the nature of the universe compared to society at large in their respective time.
    Keep these coming!

A great in-depth overview! The increased quality of content after you went full-time with UA-cam really shows. Looking forward to future uploads!
Btw, that sponsor segment was hilarious😂

It’s strange how I watched this video closely and yet I feel that I’ve only scratched the surface. As was said in the video. I still feel as though I don’t “fully” understand what stoicism is. On the terms of the ethics, I got a somewhat firm grasp but on the physics and logos is where I’m having trouble most. Think I’ll read those stuff in the description in order to get a full grasp of it. Why the hell not, I’ll finally read meditations by Marcus Aurelius. I’ve been putting it off for too long.

I think the truth is, for all of us, that UA-cam videos will only ever get us so far. I hope the video introduces people to new concepts and makes them want to dive in!

This is a question that belongs in your previous video, but here it is: Can you recommend books or classes or teach the analytic tradition of philosophy?

    • @_jared

If you want an overview, I'd recommend the two volume set from Scott Soames entitled 'Philosophical Analysis in the Twentieth Century.' Soames also has a series called 'The Analytic Tradition in Philosophy,' but I haven't read it so I can't speak to its quality.

A good read for people to understand what is meant by stoic peace/focus, then read "Over the bath" or something like that written by Seneca(I had the title in Danish originally, but it should be easy to find)

Kind note: a few of the Greek words were mispronounced eg pneuma-> which is pronounced as “pnefma” not numa
Highly suggest checking the translator for such hard words ❤

As someone who spent a significant amount of time in academia specializing in Stoicism and Hellenistic philosophy, I’ve been for years bemoaning this trend of co-opting the Stoics into the new Trad Life/self help/sigma male paradigm.

The Stoas were the market places of ancient Athens. It was where news of the day was heard, and commercial transactions were transacted. A pretty good location for philosophers actually, and I'm not kidding...some of the citizens of Athens were thirsty for knowledge, just as the businessmen of today are often thirsty for knowledge and read constantly.

Good thoughts. It leaves me wondering: Is modern stoicism up to the task of philosophy if its original grounding in logic is abandoned, since logic entailed epistemology? On what ground can stoicism stand if it itself has abandoned grounding itself in anything? If stoicism is merely elective, it's less a philosophy than a consumeristic whim.

Sure the AI stoic adjacent videos can be cringe but I've noticed videos critiquing stoicism and its abundantly clear the history behind the these schools of thought were unknown and or not understood. I thoroughly enjoyed your video!
