    "Journaling doesn't help you make sense of the world, but it helps you make sense of yourself"
    This was so well said.
    Also, thanks for bringing up the repetition of thought in journaling. I too have come back and read things that I wrote four or five years ago and I see a lot of repeating thoughts. For a long time I saw that as defect, but now I see that it's not.

    I think it is worth remembering that Aurelius wasn’t writing a book. Someone later took his various journals and/or commonplace books and put them together into a book (or a set of books). This would explain the repetition and the different formats used. Maybe they were sequential journals and his methodology evolved over time. Or maybe he did what many of us do, and kept multiple diaries concurrently, and used them for different purposes. In any event, his thoughts have spanned the centuries and his Meditations is well worth the read.
    Thanks for your thoughts on journalling. Aurelius is a good model.

    This is very encouraging for me. I tend to be overwhelmed by self-judgements about how much I repeat things if I journal, which leads to very little and infrequent journaling at all. It's nice to hear the idea that being repetitive can be useful when it's put towards repeating what's important, to help it become reinforced.

    I kinda hate the hustle-culture tech bro reputation this book has but I have a mantra that I literally do repeat to myself multiple times a day that I got from this book:
    “In times of stress or pressure, retreat to the citadel of the mind for peace and clarity”
    It’s not a direct quote, but it’s something I repeat daily when I’m stressed. Planning to get it tattooed on me. Thank you, Marcus

    I like how your Focusing on what you can Control section is employing Stoicism in itself haha
    It also makes me think of how often it seems Existentialism is conflated with Stoicism online.
    Control what you can control, don't try to control your fate.

    Awesome video, man! You pointed out how many believe that Stoicism is a philosophy of action and how really it is about the unity between thinking and action, I know you have many videos planned I just want to say that a video on philosophy in practice in our lives made by you would be insightful.

    Marcus would have been writing most of these writings in his 40s and 50s - about the age when the shit hits the fan and you realize your life isn't working out, you've wasted your time on stupid people and things, and you're nowhere near your goals. It's important to note that your late 40s and 50s are vastly different from your 30s. It's also the "mid life crisis" when existentialism start setting in. It's a time when you really start looking back and thinking about what didn't work. It's hard to get to that place in your 30s. Life has to beat the crap out of you first - then you have some heavy grieving time (what was, what will never be) and then you can truly write like Marcus Aurelius. But just regurgitating someone else's philosophy doesn't mean you get it or understand in on truly deep level. I don't think it's possible to know what the Stoics really, truly meant simply because you haven't gone through the paces of time.

    Hi Jared,
    I just started journaling and I am 2 weeks in. I found your video very insightful, thank you for putting in the effort. At present I journal in Obsidian (an electronic format). I've noticed many people journal physically. I don't because 1. My handwriting is HORRIBLE. I've been typing for year so my writing really suffers plus it's very uncomfortable to write by hand after while. 2.) There's no proper way to search past entries for similar challenges. You mentioned going back and re-reading old journals. Do you not find it inconvenient to store these old texts and manually re-read everything when you may be trying to find something specific?
    Is there something I am missing about writing something physically or is this just a preference people have? I'm not trying to be antagonistic. I supposed the important thing is actually journaling regardless of the medium. I am just trying to understand better the advantages of the physical format.
    Anyway, thank you for your video and best of luck to you. Thanks if you respond and all good if you do not.

    • @stationery-and-stories
      @stationery-and-stories Місяць тому +1

      I agree, the important thing is actually journaling and not the medium! I like writing physically because I write much slower than I type, and the process of writing quiets my mind down. It makes me be more intentional with my words and gets me away from a screen (aka distractions).
      As for finding something specific in old books, I use little color stickers in the top corners of pages I want to find easily. Ive also pulled reference info into a separate notebook entirely (a commonplace book) dedicated to info I know I want to look at often. I stick old journals on my bookshelf for storage, and there's something about seeing them there alongside other writers I admire that really encourages me to keep going and honor my journaling practice.
      Anyway - there's no right or wrong way to do it, but I hope those thoughts bring a little light to why some people might write physically!

    I have no idea how to accomplish this. Understanding stoic dogmas, life principles, and stoic metafisic is necessary in order to comprehend Markus' spiritual exercises. It is not a book, in a sense, nor is it a text.

      I mean he's one of the one's known as the "Five good emperors", and even in more critical retrospectives,he's generally seen favourably in his rule and methods, with a few notable exceptions.

    • @avoatlaw
      @avoatlaw Місяць тому +6

      I get your point but, this was his journal, it wasn't written to be published. So taking it seriously might be one thing that you should do, just because it's a journal - meaning he wrote it for himself. Little did he know hundreds of thousands would be reading his inner thoughts thousands of years later
      My point is: why not take it seriously? He wrote it with no intention for his innermost thoughts to be published, and on that note, why would he actively lie while writing/journaling his feelings? I know I don't

      Read it and see. Or at least look up some of his quotes.
      Let me put it this way. If millions of Americans can take a corrupt narcissistic clown like Trump seriously, I think you should manage to take on board the worth of words that have been appreciated for almost 2000 years.
      I’m not American by the way.

    Can’t think of a better example of stoicism than Prophet Muhammad. Islam naturally explains stoicism at its best. Jared consider reading either Clear Quran or Sealed Nectar. You will be amazed.
