I remember having old school heated blankets. The kind that didn’t turn off with a timer. Eventually my dad figured out that it would be cheaper to insulate the house better and run the thermostat a few degrees warmer than it was to run 2 fire hazards during the winter.
I'm pretty sure that using an electric blanket properly is way cheaper than trying to warm up the whole living space. I own and use an old style (no timer) electric blanket, which is rated at 60 Watts per side, it has two power settings, so 60 Watts is the high setting, and it should use far less on the lower setting (unfortunately it doesn't say what wattage it runs on on the lower setting), but even if you calculate it at the high setting running all night, that's still only 0.36kwh per 8hr night, again that's the high setting, if running it all night, you should use the low setting. The way to use it: put it directly on the mattress and cover with a fitted sheet, use a top sheet and quilt/duvet. This makes the heat source close and uninsulated to your body. The mattress and quilt/duvet trap the heat produced by the electric blanket and your body, therefore you need very little energy to keep the bed warm as you're heating up very little space and holding that heat in, compared to trying to heat the entire house including the bed
@@DanielSultana I hate to rain on your good discussion, but he was referring to the liability of a house fire, not the cost of electricity to run the blankets! Good info though!
I lived in the basement and threw the heated blanket over my space heater and never thought it would light on fire lol. I think back on it and wonder how I didn’t catch the house on fire.
My mavic 2 zoom does it very actually. The anti collision sensors work very well when avoiding objects when ambient light is good not so good after sunset for obvious reasons.
Personally, I like the heated mattress cover, heats me up from underneath, helps me sleep better. Mine rums on dc, hooked up to my truck battery. Only need about an hour, then turn off.
Toni, you are one of the few comments that mentioned a heated mattress cover. Everyone else is saying to lay on top of the blanket. Clearly they have never read an electric blankets instructions. It says do not lay on top of.
Mine is like yours, but weighted as well. I absolutely love mine. The timer is for your safety and believe me they hold so much heat in you really don't feel when they've turned off, especially if you've layered yourself with other blankets too. FYI, lowest temp I've used mine in was low 20s, while out camping during a bad windstorm, but it worked like a charm. Btw, yes, you can wash it, the instructions are on the blanket. If followed correctly blanket comes out like brand new.
As a veteran of electric blanket cold-camping, here’s what you do: 1) insulate under your sleeping bag. This is a must. 2) electric blanket has to go INSIDE your sleeping bag with you, but on top of your body inside the bag. Remember that blanket only puts out as much heat as a 100watt light bulb, so if it’s laying out in the open it won’t do you any good. An insulated sleeping bag will insulate you from the warmth the blanket creates as well as the cold (thus why it needs to be inside the bag).

A 12 volt heating blanket does not require as much power. If you take your time, research and compare the power consumption of different 12 volt blankets, you can find some very efficient options.
@@Just.Ashley.S A blanked that takes 100w versus a blanket that takes 50w will literally put out 2x as much heat. How many degrees exactly will depend on how cold it is and how much insulation (aka. blankets) you have around it and yourself
@@EndstyleGG Outside temperature and insulation are subjective factors. I’m talking about the standard temperature rating on 12 volt heating blankets. It’s simply mathematics to understand that less power consumption equals less output, however that’s not what I’m arguing nor does my statement contradict that. My reply is quite simply if you read it for what it is. Again, 12 volts can power heating blankets upwards of 100 degrees with no issue. That is quite hot and almost intolerable at the highest settings, therefore anything using the word cold/er is not an accurate description. It does not require that much power to put out that much heat. Will more power put out more heat, of course, but it’s not necessary especially when it’s at the expense of inverter power consumption.
@@EndstyleGG so what he means in laymen's terms is that powering a 100w dc device is more efficient that powering an AC devices if using dc batteries becuz there is power loss in the DC to AC and back to DC conversions.
You bought a “throw” blanket. They’re smaller than normal blankets (that you use for your bed). Throw blankets are for snuggling up on the sofa while watching TV on a cold night.
@@srl0003 Yup. The regular sized blankets will stay on all night. That was what I meant to include. Better than waking up every 3 hours to turn the blanket back on again.
Yeah, you have to put your comforter over the blanket. I run mine on power 5 and it's set to 8 hours. Saves power and it's plenty comfy. I have solar powered alarms with strobe lights for animals. Activated for anything 15 feet away. Careful of hitting your head when it goes off!!
Reason its so small and the timer would only go up to 3 hours is because that's a throw, not a blanket. An actual blanket would have been longer and stayed on for longer (8-10 hours).
Chain a few deep cycles and a invertor from the truck that shuts off charging after a certain voltage so you can keep the deep cycles topped off. Hell of allot cheaper and simple af.

You’re supposed lay on the heated blanket, your body will absorb more radiant heat that way and then have a regular blanket on top. Doing it this way you can lower the power usage significantly by turning the power down. Much more efficient.
Bought my first electric lap blanket last year. Loved it so much, I overused it and fritzed it. This year, an electric mattress Pad I believe will do very well for me and my arthritic kitty.
That’s the problem with electric throws. Too small, not as hot. Get an electric blanket, queen size. A tad more spendy but worth it. I’m not sure how much draw they have. I slept in my car without heat and no electric blanket or throw in 14 degrees f, the whole winter during repeated snow and ice storms. $70? Yikes. I’ve never paid more than $50 on Amazon for a heated throw. $70+ is electric blankets. You gotta shop bro

Nice video, good food too. Some suggestions : Bungee a tarp over your cap at night. It creates a dead air space which will help trap some heat from escaping and will also help reduce condensation. It's tough sleeping in your clothes inside a mummy bag, remove outer clothing and push to the bottom of your bag for added insulation around your feet. I was wondering if you checked to see if the heated throw electrical usage draw varied depending on the set number you put it on ? Or, did it pull a constant 120 watts ? Good luck.

Nice vid Mav. Be careful with that blanket, don't burn yourself.
Knife looks Sharp! Glad to see your getting some use from it.

A 12 volt heating blanket does not require as much power. If you take your time, research and compare the power consumption of different 12 volt blankets, you can find some very efficient options.
But the lower consumption ones will be colder...
@@EndstyleGG Colder isn’t an accurate descriptions for 100+ degrees of heat in a blanket. That’s plenty hot and 12 volts can power that just fine.

My thoughts exactly. Plus the normal blankets stay on all night..
I think that style would be best for running off a battery though.
@@TermiteTweeker True, but waking up ever 3 hours to turn the blanket back on?

Easy to draw
$70 blanket. Cost to run it? $1200 battery pack. Come on back in, Mr. Buddy!
It actually costs more than $3000
Okay I will
Chain a few deep cycles and a invertor from the truck that shuts off charging after a certain voltage so you can keep the deep cycles topped off. Hell of allot cheaper and simple af.
@Crabbing, Clamming & Boat Camping my solar battery is 400ah and cost me 1600$. It's 3-4k with panels and all in one inverter. For 3200$ you could buy 800ah battery.
Electric blankets work best with a comforter over them. Also the throws time out early (3hrs) the blankets 10 hrs.
Blankets are amazing. Discovered them 4 years ago. Can't imagine my life without them 🤣 🤠 have a blanket that goes under me🤣
I’ve been binging the heck out of Mav’s videos. Thanks man! Great channel.
I love my electric blanket... Was leas than 20 dollars at Walmart... Stays on for 8 hrs and i put it under me and then cover up... I stay toasty and never have to turn it on high
Until it blows up (here in NZ) Kmarts special 😂 controller blew up lol

@@MrRelevance02 ive had it 3 yrs... I make sure the controller is away from my bed and has some air flow so it doesnt overheat... No problems with it at all... But as with anything, buyer beware cuz anything can be faulty...

You’re supposed lay on the heated blanket, your body will absorb more radiant heat that way and then have a regular blanket on top. Doing it this way you can lower the power usage significantly by turning the power down. Much more efficient.
It depends some you aren’t able to lie on or it will damage the little wires
Your comment is why instructions come with heated blankets lol

The blanket draws so much power because it is purely inductive. Meaning it literally heats itself by drawing power through coils kinda like a toaster.
*Purely resistive. If it didnt have the controller you could run it straight off the dc output. An inductive load typically involves a transformer.
Amazing cooking seeing how that electric blanket works, food looks awesome
That’s the problem with electric throws. Too small, not as hot. Get an electric blanket, queen size. A tad more spendy but worth it. I’m not sure how much draw they have. I slept in my car without heat and no electric blanket or throw in 14 degrees f, the whole winter during repeated snow and ice storms.
$70? Yikes. I’ve never paid more than $50 on Amazon for a heated throw. $70+ is electric blankets. You gotta shop bro
instead of putting the blanket on you, lay it down and sleep on it with the comforter on you. Heat rises and will fill the area between it and your comforter with warmer air. This is how I do it and have sleep in very cold temps.
Mav: "no matter how many times you shake & dance, the last few drops always go on the new heated blanket" LOL

You may want to look into a heated mattress pad. It warms from beneath and a blanket over the top will insulate.

When U buy a ELECTRIC BLANKET buy one with a off and on switch without A timer. It will stay on or off until U turn it off and on!!!!!! 👍🙋♀️AND 1 size larger than your bed 🛌
I live in a shed to cabin conversion and use a electic blanket, keeps me cozy. I had a 30A RV box for partial electric installed , and also using solar for lights and fans. Its doesnt get as cold as Alaska or Canada here, but have had a few 19f nights. i also lived in Denver for over 20 years, so my experience is from cold climates. The three years ive been here in the woods, my land is more south, in the apalachian , the people are great people, they tell me to get all winterized up. They are not as climatized to real cold temps, yet sleeping in a truck shell, in that climate...is know is frigging cold.
ALWAYS put on dry socks right before you get in bed when camping in the cold.
I have been trying to find the recipe to something my wife's grandmother cooked years ago.
She called it sodocki, not sure of the spelling but it had no meat and with butter milk.
Sounds kind of like what you cooked. This was a very old Czechoslovakian recipe.

After hearing the *creepy* sounds i was gonna say it could be trains i live like 3-5 miles away from rail roads but at night its so quiet you can hear the trains rumbling its kinda hard to describe the sound its a low rumbling but its almost like your neighbor a few houses down is idling their truck but at he same time its kinda hard to pinpoint where the sound is coming from

They sell really nice heated blankets at Big Lots & are fairly priced! But unlike yours you can set the timer to 1-8 hrs or there’s others that don’t have a shut off timer. Also, I personally like sleeping on top of the heated blanket & then using a comforter on top to cover up with👌🏼

Good luck.
