To anyone in the comments who tries using live fire as a heat source in a confined space (car, tent, small shack etc) please make sure you have a fresh air supply. Many winter fishermen have died using small propane heaters in cars. The fire burns away oxygen and the fishermen die while sleeping. You sir have done it right. Open air and a detector 👍
That CO detector is the single most important tool in the back of that truck and I was happy to see you had one. See lots of camping UA-camrs getting this wrong. No combustion in a confined space is ideal, but if you’ve gotta do it be smart about it.
so in that type of cold I would have fired up that buddy heater to get the space warm first and then switched to the stero cans for heat. they do not put out enough heat to warm a space but do a surprisingly good job at maintaining the heat of a space that is already warm.
Does the buddy heater burn oxygen.. I need some advice . I sleep in the small bedroom with the door closed in Winter time and I have a space heater going continually Cause I'm in the basement. Space heater is plugged into the AC. So does the space heater plugged into the AC where an oxygen like a buddy propane does.
Have you thought about putting a thermometer in the truck with you so you can show the temp difference with these different heat sources? I would love to see the true heating power of your heat sources. Keep it up.
I've always been infatuated with the idea of going out and camping in a car and cooking a meal out in the sticks, but watching this makes me actually feel like it's possible
Some random thoughts I had while watching this: - Thoughts on just using a 20lb propane tank? Cost to refill is ~$15 to $20. Those disposable ones are probably in that range for just a couple of them. Would save you $ in the long run and allow you to sleep through night better. Could rig up a holder outside the truck or just place on ground. Adapter cables exist to connect the bigger tank to your portable tank outlets. (you can also get adapters to refill the small portable tanks from the larger one as well) - Radiant heat on the floor of truck bed. Use PEX tubing, or other approach. Plenty of propane based on-demand water heaters are out there. - - Completely random thought. Any idea if you could somehow use Ceramic Gas Grill Briquettes to capture some of the heat? Those can hold temperature for a good amount of time and are non-toxic. Not exactly sure how to implement it, but ......
It'd probably be easiest and safest to use a small tabletop BBQ with those Ceramic Briquettes inside as the thermal mass, rather than try and rig something up as he did with the Sterno and flower pot. On another note, the flower pot is a poor thermal mass choice because of how thin the walls are. However, I will admit that the Sterno cans are a better heat source than tea lights. Fuck, I hate all the scam videos of teapot heaters using tea lights. They're novelty lamps and nothing more.
How about an electric heater powered by a battery power bank? :) The power source can be recharged at home or using solar panels on the roof of the truck. Or even connected to the alternator.
@@zzz7zzz9 Yes, I noted that in my post above. (definitely don't throw away and keep buying more. If you do that, you might as well burn money to make your heat :) )

If you put a quarter on top of the hole in the clay pot they get much warmer and radiant more heat. I use these in hunting blinds and cabins and only move the quarter to let out shorts bursts of air to warm the inside of a glove
My husband is from Virginia a good ol country boy taught and raised how to live in those situations he could make your trip into the woods look like disney land.
I designed my own stealth van camper - but never built it. To heat it (for sleeping) I planned to use a standard outdoor grill propane tank that burns a small flame in a closed tube (air tight except at inlet and exhaust) over a tall air tight heat exchanger. At the bottom of tube is the burner with a small hole to vent in a small amount of indoor air and another hole to vent in some outside air. A small hole in the cabin brings in fresh air on the other side (cabin side) of the heat exchanger where it mixes with indoor air. The air is heated in the tube (chimney) and passes up through the chimney side of the heat exchanger, the much cooler exhaust comes out the roof through a recessed cap to keep out rain. The other side of the heat exchanger (cabin side) is thus heated by conduction and is in the bed area with a quiet small low speed fan and a guard grille. What made it efficient is the bed area is like what you see in the middle bunk in an aircraft carrier (about 6.5 feet long, 18 inches high, and 26 inches wide which is closed on 5 sides), but instead of a curtain, I have an insulated articulated (80 hinge) sliding door that slides out from behind the bunk at the feet and wraps around toward the head (like a roll top desk but sideways) - this closes in the bunk (with a 1ft square hole covered in fleece for air to pass through but still insulating). I have Carbon Monoxide (CO) detectors around the cabin and in the bunk. If any detect warning or higher levels, the burner is shut off and an alarm sounds. I figured the tank could last for at least a week of 8 hour sleeping sessions. To heat the whole cabin, the flame and fan can be turned up. But the idea is not to hang out much in the van in the winter unless to sleep. I think I am going to post a slide show video of my design.
Thats brilliant! I never thought of that! Using a Sterno stove with a plant pot! I know the tea candle trick. It only kinda works. When I am in that cold of weather or rain, I use a cheap Walmart 20 dollar dehumidifier that I converted to run on 12V. The power usage is so low it will run all night.
I installed a Chinese diesel heater in the back of my truck. It’s exhaust vents out the truck cap window and I have a house battery under my bed that powers it and charges off the alternator. Runs all night off 1 litre of diesel and barely uses any battery power but keeps me nice and comfortably warm and dry all night. Best part is it was only $150cad for the heater on Amazon.
Nice, in u tube videos I see some problems with these diesel heaters. I have a vented propane heater no power needed for heater in my hidden tiny home.
Bit of advice with the terracotta pots, the sterno needs to above the bottom of the pots second air is pulled from the bottom and shoots hot air through the hole in the bottom of the pot pointed up. This creates convection currents and will better heat your space.
Hey this mans a beauty, I met him the other day I saw him in a parking lot got to say hi, very nice guy. This is jake btw lol not sure if you remember. But it was very nice meeting you

Seriously. MAV love your videos man but worst case scenario the back of your truck bed would light up like a tinder box before you even knew what do do. Spend ~4k and upgrade your cap to a high top version and insulate it. Worth the risk and you're really only just buying the high top version of a cap.
RECIPE - what we make for breakfast when hunting. Potatoes cooked in a cast Iron skillet, brown them in some sausage or bacon grease. (Cook that first). Brown the potatoes, add onions after they start getting soft. Then when the potatoes are almost done, add your sausage or bacon. Crack an egg every couple inches apart over the top and cook until eggs firm up to your liking. Salt and pepper and maybe some hot sauce and eat up. Cool video!

i just commented the same thing.. its so bad out here without being bad at all. the weather itself is not that bad. im from chicago so this is nothing! the whole city is closed down smh
I'm glad you mentioned you open the windows.. Had a buddy die of mono oxide poisoning. With all the oxygen used up in a space through heating can lead to death. Stay safe folks
Everyone keeps suggesting he needs a diesel, obviously none of you know how trashed internals get on diesels on cold starts, living in Minnesota in -17 degree weather doing cold starts every morning he wouldn't have a truck by the time it's spring time. Diesels should be(not saying they HAVE TO BE but SHOULD BE) plugged in once it reaches like 25 degrees. Y'all should do some research
Definitely no diesel up north where it gets that cold! Gas engines for me! The Ice road truckers let their engine idle 24/7 because if they shut them off they will not restart.
Almost tried that in 20 degree weather while car camping, but never went for heating, just bundled up. The heat cans plus ceramic pots to keep heat in is my next goal when it gets colder
The thing with an open fire in a confined space you only need to get it wrong once. Get sleepy, forget to open the window or even it might get blocked by snow and you die. It happens all the time.
I love camping. I love the outdoors. I love good UA-cam videos. You, young man have hit the mark on all! I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Got all the good Canadian radio and TV stations. Learned all the jargon, eh?!
U should make a fire and put 2 big rocks in it for a couple hours. Then put it on a metal tray in ur truck. I saw that bush craft guy do it and it lasted hours. Great video👍
True. In the infantry we was taught to sleep naked in the bags. Or at the very max to have on underwear. You will stay much warmer if you do it that way. And put your boots at the top of your head when you sleep. It will dry them out and they won't be as cold in the morning.
@@pringleaddict5827 It's to prevent you from sweating, sweating while in the extreme cold is actually very bad, in a survival situation out in the extreme cold you want to stay warm but prevent sweating at all costs.
I did something like this years ago in a 1998 Toyota 4wd pickup. The heat source I used to stay warm was my three year old Dog Willis in the sleeping bag with me. We were in Wyoming in early March.
Make sure your detector is exposed to non-co air before you use it!! Open it and turn it on outside, sometimes turning it on in an environment that has co will set that as the normal amount and the detector won’t go off until it’s way above the dangerous limit. I’m not sure that’s the case with your detector, but it’s always better to play it safe. Also to those recommending propane, that’s not a great idea. Alcohol doesn’t off-put co nearly as much so the risk is much lower. I’ve seen videos where the detectors haven’t gone off until a fatal concentration, which scares me enough to stay away from fossil fuels for heating, (even though I’m a huge fan of kerosene heating)
Hey mav!! Do you keep a thermometer inside the back of your truck so that way when u say it's "warm" you could let us know whats the temp your dealing with figure it go good with saying what it is outside as well.

“Hey guys, this is Mav, today we’re going to be peeing into these jugs, and make what’s called trucker bombs. Then I’m going to pack them into my sleeping bag for warmth and try to survive the night.”
@@rosscoeradio3741 for some reason I had Mav in my head saying this 😂
Greetings little brother!! I'm following you from the UK. Me and my Husky do the same kind of stuff over here, but not as good as you, lol!! I only have a small truck but it gets us from A to B, in the country!! Cheers for being an uplifting and an inspirational person. More people need to truck camp!! It's soooo much better than sleeping in a tent!! Cheers! :)
If you put a quarter on top of the hole in the clay pot they get much warmer and radiant more heat. I use these in hunting blinds and cabins and only move the quarter to let out shorts bursts of air to warm the inside of a glove
Us Texans respect your all’s cold now u can have it back tho!
Hope u warm up soon.
For all Texans I think this was a prepping lesson for all.
My husband is from Virginia a good ol country boy taught and raised how to live in those situations he could make your trip into the woods look like disney land.
You might need a few survival tips from him lol
The word is y'all
"I am a professional". I would have to agree, after watching your professional videos. Love 'em.
You mind emailing me your setup and pictures? I’m looking to build a trunk setup in the future and yours sounds pretty ergonomic
What is a house battery?
@@patmacrotch5611 just an additional battery that powers accessories and is charged from the trucks alternator
Nice, in u tube videos I see some problems with these diesel heaters. I have a vented propane heater no power needed for heater in my hidden tiny home.
I wish I knew how to install that
Bit of advice with the terracotta pots, the sterno needs to above the bottom of the pots second air is pulled from the bottom and shoots hot air through the hole in the bottom of the pot pointed up. This creates convection currents and will better heat your space.
I understood nothing about what you tried to explain.

Update us with a thermometer in the sleeping area to see how effective the different heating methods are.
great idea
1 or 2 degrees at most with sterno.

Seriously. MAV love your videos man but worst case scenario the back of your truck bed would light up like a tinder box before you even knew what do do.
Spend ~4k and upgrade your cap to a high top version and insulate it. Worth the risk and you're really only just buying the high top version of a cap.
Or it will be "Heating my truck with its own exhaust"
Why would you say something like that you horrible person.

Maybe one day you'll understand.

There's some serious lack of tiger mask in this episode, sad times.
My mother in law gave him that😂
RECIPE - what we make for breakfast when hunting.
Cool video!
Eat that before sleep and stay warm all night.
"Oh God someone's gunna drive by nd think im doing something else in here" lights the torch lol this guys funny

I've been binge watching your stuff man. I love the variety, definitely a breath of fresh air.
You should keep a little thermostat in the back. Curious to see what the temps reach in the camper
I like how you said -15 is cold.... in canada our "normal" days hover around -28 to -32 degrees regularly.
I gotta 7.3 and in Missouri lately it’s been a pain in the ass to start every morning
Yeah but why not put in a 12v webasto or espar heater? Set a timer for a couple hours before the start up time
Definitely no diesel up north where it gets that cold! Gas engines for me!
The Ice road truckers let their engine idle 24/7 because if they shut them off they will not restart.
Gas truck is def better for this application. Now a diesel RV heater would be a game changer.
Almost tried that in 20 degree weather while car camping, but never went for heating, just bundled up. The heat cans plus ceramic pots to keep heat in is my next goal when it gets colder
This guys family is probably rich but he has a good nice attitude and he is friendly

The thing with an open fire in a confined space you only need to get it wrong once. Get sleepy, forget to open the window or even it might get blocked by snow and you die. It happens all the time.
Yep, or you turn in your sleep and knock the flame over, lighting whatever you're inside on fire
This and the candles saved my life, I’m from Texas.

Quick tip from the Estonian Military, when u are going do sleep in the sleepingbag, try do have as little clothes on as possible:)
This is a fact my friend it really works .
True. In the infantry we was taught to sleep naked in the bags. Or at the very max to have on underwear. You will stay much warmer if you do it that way. And put your boots at the top of your head when you sleep. It will dry them out and they won't be as cold in the morning.
Nice car pic
@@GRUFF.. no offence but why is this?
@@pringleaddict5827 It's to prevent you from sweating, sweating while in the extreme cold is actually very bad, in a survival situation out in the extreme cold you want to stay warm but prevent sweating at all costs.
I did something like this years ago in a 1998 Toyota 4wd pickup. The heat source I used to stay warm was my three year old Dog Willis in the sleeping bag with me. We were in Wyoming in early March.
I come for the one liners
“They’re gunna think I’m cookin, ... something else”
These are the perfect videos to watch after you crawl under the covers yourself. They’ll put you right to sleep! I mean that in a good way!
"So we got 4 and a half 4 and a half 6 6 6 ohh 😦" bro these have me dying 🤣🤣
