- On August 19, 2024, political commentator Liz Wheeler posted a graph depicting the 9 Least Attractive Hobbies for Men According to Women. Quote: "The is 100% true. Men playing video games is peak unattractive. Beyond red flag. Like Dealbreaker zone. It's weird that so many dudes don't get this." And while this graph was quickly community noted by Twitter saying quote: "There is no source provided for the reported finding, and the percentages are rounded evenly to the nearest multiple of 5, which is implausible. The origin of this image is from an TikToker making a joke post about them being birdwatchers."
Now why is this important? Why are we talking about this? Because it's a slight against video gamers. And moreso, it's a slight against men. And we are an entertainment commentary channel. And I am a Man. So, believe me, I have a lot of things to say.
This fake study was seen by 18 million people on Twitter/X. That's a lot of people to be exposed to this negative and false stigma. That's a lot of people to be spewing this negative propaganda at. But let's go ahead and look at the other things on this fake list: Video Games, Collecting Figures, Magic Tricks, Online Trolling, Gambling, Building Model Trains, Taxidermy, Comic Book Collecting, Bird Watching... all unattractive, allegedly.
First off, Gambling is the most dangerous one on here. It's that only one I could justifiably confirm would likely be unattractive to women. It's hard to argue with gambling, as it's the only one on this list that's almost immediately dangerous. Idk, maybe magic tricks is just as bad.
Taxidermy is also weird. I know a lot of people. You, at home, know a lot of people, I don't know a damn soul that's into taxidermy. That's a little weird, yeah. Hey what happened to max, the dog? oh, he's right here!
And that takes us back to the Video Games point. With video games being put at the top of this false study. Well, let's finish up what Liz Wheeler has to say about this:

Good backtrack, Liz. Yes, everyone will stop dogpiling because it's a meme.
Some of y’all need to loosen up and laugh at the funny meme that triggered you.
But video games are a net negative on society when you measure the increase in aggressive behavior, desensitization to violence, anxiety, mood disorders, social adjustment difficulties, nightmares & sleep disorders correlated to gaming.
Got any studies to back that up?
It’s pretty simple. Women are attracted to men based on men’s ability to protect, provide, produce, & procreate. Hobbies that illustrate that ability are attractive to women. Hobbies that do not… are not
And yes of course there are toxic hobbies women have too… TikTok, online shopping, Real Housewives. But this was never about a war between the sexes. It was never an attack on men. I love y’all. That’s why I want you to stop playing video games and laugh at the hilarious meme. I mean, did you see the part about taxidermy?!

People will try to shame you for your hobbies because they’re either narcissists and want you to focus on them , or they’re insecure about the fact they’re incredibly boring to be around as they don’t have any interests themselves (outside of their own vain hobbies)
As a 47 year old divorcee, I can tell you video games are cheaper and more satisfying than women.
Don't forget, you can walk away from a video game when bored or something comes up without it giving you the third degree as to why you weren't focusing solely on it when you pick it up again.

I've been married over 30 years. When I started dating my wife we went to arcades in malls and played games and air hockey together. I bought an NES for us to play together for cheap dates.
We took cash given to us as a wedding gift and bought a SNES on our honeymoon.
We built side by side PC desks in our home.
While my wife slowed down on gaming she never stopped, and she never stopped supporting my gaming habit.

I find women to be boring to be around unless we are having bedroom fun. I would regularly leave my girlfriend's place to go home and play video games by myself. When I was a boy, when I was a teenager, I used to kick and scream at my video-games. The games had nothing to do with it: the reason I exploded is because everyday, when I opened my eyes, my first thought was 'oh, no. I have to get ready for public school'. Then I'd count how many more years of that soul-killing crap I had to endure, like I was getting through a prison sentence. So, in the evening, after a long day of miserable commute, of bullying, of fluorescent lighting, of being made to learn subjects I wasn't interested in and knew would be useless to me, and being graded for and chastised for failing in (overwhelmingly by abusive women, I might add), when I'd finally get home, and avoid my homework (because fuck working more than my dad the aeronautical engineer at age 15) I would play video-games... to forget. And, occasionally, something would go wrong, where I'd be penalised because of a bug (something perfectly natural), or get stuck on something frustrating, and I'd explode. Japan is not the best example considering how terrible their society is regarding birth rates and lack of social connection. There is a term that starts with an H there that means something like “isolated hermit man”, because of the millions now of young men who simply stay inside and don’t do much of anything else.

The fact that we both play video games was one of the first things that attracted me to my husband. I love watching him play. Even now, 14 years in, it’s how we spend most of our time together. Notice "watching mindless TV" isn't on the list, because they binge their shows. The video games i play have better story, acting and writing than any show i've seen on TV or come out of hollywood/Netflix/Amazon/Paramount etc. In many of the games, I can make choices that affect the outcome of the story. But i'm old and married, and don't have any skin in the game but from what i see, I wouldn't want anything to do with people that made that "list"

It's a complex topic. 1) Video games are addictive. They are designed to make players more invested into them. 2) Addictions are unattractive and are detrimental to relationships. 3) Benefits of playing video games are limited as many of them don't require creativity or skills useful for other activities. On the contrary: 1) Games are a means of relaxation, the same as watching TV, reading books or listening to music. The amount of time that people spent relaxing is getting longer through the last few decades. 2) People are attracted to like-minded people. You're more likely to have a good time with a partner who has the same hobbies as you.
They are only addictive when they are actively DESIGNED to be that way, which wasn't as big a problem as it was today due to inclusion of mechanics increasing addictive/compulsive behaviours alongside changes in how we socialise. Video game addiction isnt anywhere near as a big a problem as gambling or drug addiction as studies have continuously proven. The issue is often really how people understand addiction and what it entails, or just simply the perception of video games.
If video games are unattractive then I could care less. Baldurs Gate 3 has never left me for its ex, cheated on me with a crack head or used me for my money then left when I was broke. BG3 was there when all that happened.

I am a 50 yo disabled female gamer. I play games every day from 1-12 hours a day. My husband doesn't play games at all and I truly wish he did. Men who play video games are not unattractive, but men (and women) that use twitter (or x or wtf ever) are peak unattractive. Games expand the mind while twitter shrinks it.
Heck before my wife passed away we would have "date nights" when the kids were in bed, it was always Stardew Valley and it was great.
A very relaxing game perfect to wind down to and also we could chat away or sit in silence for a while and it didn't matter.
We were having fun together, we worked together to achieve things and playfully teased each other when the other would get a legendary fish (not to mention constantly giggling over catching a fish called Chubs.)
If I could ever get my husband to play games, the first game I'd play with him is Red Dead Online - in a private server.

If a man works really hard to provide and uses downtime with gaming (and it's not maladaptive) there is zero issue.
