Gentle- Man Living a simple and plain life is ideal, although being rich and having materialistic possessions doesn’t necessesarily contradict the way of the tao. You can simply play the game of life without mixing your identification with the materialistic succession. This is obviously not the case in today’s society.

The crowd at the ball game
      BY WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS
The crowd at the ball game
      is moved uniformly
      by a spirit of uselessness
      which delights them-
      all the exciting detail
      of the chase
      and the escape, the error
      the flash of genius-
all to no end save beauty
      the eternal-
So in detail they, the crowd,
      are beautiful
      for this
      to be warned against
      saluted and defied-
      It is alive, venomous
      it smiles grimly
      its words cut-
      The flashy female with her
      mother, gets it-
The Jew gets it straight- it
      is deadly, terrifying-
      It is the Inquisition, the
      Revolution
      It is beauty itself
      that lives
      day by day in them
      idly-
      This is
      the power of their faces
It is summer, it is the solstice
      the crowd is
      cheering, the crowd is laughing
      in detail
      permanently, seriously
      without thought

      4. For me i can strive, but not too attach to it. Moving or flowing through what you want (prefer) is good. Just like people who meditate aka wants to go towards something. I think the problem is attachment aka binary yes or no.
Examples if you, want to run marathon but fall short. Is not a problem. How you attach or view the attainment of outcome is the problem. The journey and task you take to run marathon can be blissful and flowing if you dont exert force or push yourself reluctantly.

    • @akakaakak2911
      @akakaakak2911 5 років тому +4

      Another example.
      I want a good job.
Well you can still flow or we wui or take path of least resistance in pursuit of it. You do what is necessary to get there, when you tired, you stop, you not forcing to work when you tired.
Let's say you dont get the job you want. It is not a problem if you not too attach too it...
I will say striving is not bad. It is the attachment to striving that is bad.
Strive aka go towards what you want sometimes, but not too hard. If you dont get it. No big deal.

People keep bugging me why I don't get my drivers licence. Well, I don't need it, don't need a car, don't need the payments, don't want to drive people around, don't want to be frustrated with other drivers, bad roads, tickets and pigeon shitstains.
They asked me and it was a half a decade ago, why I don't have a mobile phone (I have now as living without it is more troubles nowadays). I didn't want it, because I enjoyed my time without being harrassed with phonecalls and messages.
Before you assume I'm an eccentric old guy, I'm not. I haven't had a mobile from age 16 to 22. I'm 27 now and life is very good.

Dont want is the a form of 'want'.
You dont want drivers license because you want to have peace of mind.
People who say the arent striving is actually striving. Or i will callled it wants. They still have wants or desire.
Yours is desire to have peace of minds aka not having to deal with driving and drivers.

The first part of this "eat merely to relieve your hunger" is completely wrong. This is the one reason a person should NOT eat. One should eat purely to NOURISH one's body. Hunger is secondary.

    • @TurbanatorGamer

@@TurbanatorGamer in a sense you are also correct - this was written in Ancient Greece, but what I mean is that Seneca's idea of "hunger" was probably completely different to our modern day version of it, where if people feel hunger and are walking about the streets, instead of buying nourishing food in anticipation of a healthy meal which feeds the body, they indulge in INSTANT gratification of their hunger, and enter the nearest pie shop...

This is quite true. If everything thinks you're useful, they will come to you by default and they will think you will solve everything. 5:40 after I stopped playing the violin as a kid, I remember always being told that I could’ve been a master at my age or how I’m not productive like my other relatives who could afford clubs and sports.
A part of me saw the beauty in being seen as the “useless” scapegoat, because I pioneered my interest in creativity and science: writing, designing, forensics/mortuary science, reading, drawing and editing.
All are which I find myself always gravitating towards. As I grew up, many began to exploit this because I was now “exceptional” after receiving rewards and whatnot from the work and effort I’ve put in.
I’ve learned that for most who rush in life, they silence their inner voice and expect others to do the same. Ive learned to listen to mines and ignore judgement which doesn’t provide much benefit

I was born in the fifties in the US. The culture than according to my parents was that idleness and laziness was a sin. They did not tolerate any kind of daydreaming or just doing nothing. The result is I am a nervous perfectionist. I am now almost 70 and I try every day to break my patterns and follow the TAO.

Thanks so much for this video! I’ve been stressing over getting acceptance into a masters program that I’ve been working towards for over five years now. And I’ve been so preoccupied with how old I will be once I get into the program, that I’ve been rushing things. Thank you for the wonderful reminder to be patient and to stop trying to control everything.

The other day after watching "The Minimalists" on Netflix, I decided to throw out things I have held onto for years, including these rocks I collected at a beach in my family's home country Dominican Republic when I was about 11yrs old. (I'm 27). As I spread them out, I joked to my brother that it looked like it spelled a word-Taoism. I minored in Philosophy but I won't lie I "winged" eastern philosophy, so I wasn't really too familiar with this practice. I'm a firm believer in signs from the universe and as it turns out, this video and others on Taoism have discussed ideas I needed to hear on my current spiritual journey.. transformational ideas. I felt a sensation in my gut watching this video because it spoke not only things I had pondered but brought up solutions for my episodes of depression and existential dread. Life truly is magical and beautiful.. I recommend watching the first episode of "Surviving Death" on Netflix if anyone is into spirituality. I've felt purposeful ever since, (which can be rare for philosophers with depression and PTSD)

Hey dude, just wanted to pop a comment and say I really enjoy your content. Watching your vid on "How to be alone" really made me reconsider a lot of the notions I was laying against myself, and this video did a great job reaffirming many of the Taoist principles I've been falling into lately in a very natural and charming way. Keep up the great work and don't stand on your tip toes, that's a sub from me.

This is amazing in its capacity to heal slowly as it may. Taoism is a state and it is - at least to me - more abstract than religious teachings which impose more concretized ideologies. And yet, Taoism strikes a chord with people because it resonates deep into the human subconscious. I am all for it.

Every day I agree more and more with principles, teachings or however you wish to call them, pertaining to the Taoism, Buddhism and Stoicism; I can look back an acknowledge many, many points in my life in which I was grasping for mere illusions. The result? I got frustrated, I got anxious, I got depressed, I got angry, I was these and many other things except one: happy. Because I was striving to belong somewhere I didn't, and now I laugh at my puerile desires of being noticed, of being on the spotlight, of yearning things that I was "supposed to strive for". But now I can acknowledge it as a teaching from the Universe. If I hadn't gone through that, I wouldn't recognize in this moment that I don't want that anymore. Not out of resentment or spite. Simply because I don't wish it, because I've experienced feeling whole by myself, by my own means, by what one may call _useless_ things, indeed. Thank you for this and many other of your amazing videos.

In fact , the more diverse idea the world possess , the more violent the world will get.

I was always striving for people's validation. I felt useless because i was not smart enough to achieve my goals. People only noticed me if I achieved something while they ignored me if I'm not. Now I realized after I quit my job that I don't need their validation. That I am enough even though I'm "useless". I am at peace when they think I'm useless because I act like I don't know anything so they won't bother me. They'll just use you if you are "useful". After they used you, they'll act like they don't even know you. It's better to be a low profile person.

I haven't heard this be compared yet, but a good example of a beneficial natural "do nothing" state, is the bear in the winter. Hibernation can be seen as doing nothing, but in reality, the bear utilizes this inertness to survive in the time where survival is at its hardest, or food is most scarce. By doing nothing, the bear thrives.

I started understanding this to mean be lazy or act disinterested but now I envision in my meditative mind what you said…those with gifted or special talents are often exploited. Then I look inside at my sacred self and imagine all of my own, unique gifts and would I want those exploited? The answer is a resounding no.

The Tao Te Ching is a wonderful gift left to us by an amazing philosopher who understood the truly important things in life.
I remember that reading this ancient wisdom & implementing it about 20 years ago changed my perspectives & priorities in life in such an immensely positive way. Combine the teachings of the Tao with the ancient Roman stoic philosophy of Seneca, Marcus Aurelius & Epictetus, and you will have opened a path towards a happier, healthier & more peaceful life. It truly can change your life for the better.
