I must have heard at least 100 performances of this sonata. Richter and Gilels are the ones I keep going back to. But this Arrau performance is quite outstanding. A very dark, demonic even ecstatic reading but not rushed and with total grasp of the structure. It is the best performance I have ever heard.
I feel bad for Arrau to have had this audience, there's coughs and snorts literally every 3 seconds. You can even hear motorcycles or something at 16:25
such a great interpretation on such a shitty piano ( we can feel Arrau battling with it ) ... probably in the old Massey Hall with its horrible acoustic .

Stephen Churley did you hear Horowitz's version from 1932?
Yes. Technically superb but he skates over the surface. His live 1949 performance is much more emotional and visceral. But I still prefer Arrau.
El maestro siempre tenía el control...no como otros que lo único que desean es terminar lo más rápido posible para retirarse del escenario...
Wow,wow,wow!!!
Bravo!!!!!!!!
thank you so much for this gem!!!!!!!!!
Bravo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Arrau makes symphonic sound and interpretation.
What a musician! What an ear!
Bootleg or CBC broadcast?
