This is a video of me showing some of the work I did on my Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4, for previous work to this be sure to check out transformation #1! I am not a professional by any means, I'm just a regular college student that happens to have a passion for cars. The 3000GT VR-4 is brother to the Dodge Stealth RT/TT but it is not a DSM.I did a 1st gen to 2nd gen conversion, 97 VR4. Installed tein lowering springs and more.

We all start with zero knowledge, but start learning little by little. youtube and google are your best friend when it comes to learning about cars lol
DallinVaughn this platform is just misunderstood. Stock for stock it smoked the z32 300ZX TT and fd3 RX7 TT in a straight line, and was as fast as the mk4 Supra TT until 100mph or so.
I like that they're not as popular, more for the true fans ;)

I like the late 1990's 3kgt with those nice swept back headlights. This is the only 90's car i like without pop up headlights.

I think it has to do with the fact that it never got a movie like the Supra or the GTR, the good thing though is that it makes it easy to afford because it’s not overhyped, the maintenance is the expensive part

Don't forget that when you rebuild the engine replace the oil cooler and pipes, you don't know what shit is lurking in there. Nice vid by the way and greetings from the UK.

Heart goes out to u brother vr4 to vr4 ❤ sadly the previous owners of alot of these cars have usually beaten the engines to almost a pulp I love mine with all my heart and I hope u figure out what u want to do.
Turns out it was the shop that installed my 120k kit fault! they dented my oil pan and starved the engine of oil, but I fixed it! I uploaded more videos on it

Nice VR-4 man. I had a 99 SL but had to get rid of it cuz engine started knocking exactly like that, rebuilt engine was pricey and didn’t wanna put too much money on it because of other problems it had. hopefully you just have this issue and nothing else.
Scott Marzana Thanks man I love these cars, I used to have a 98 SOHC but I had to get rid of it too. My biggest concern is that I fix it and it happens again but hopefully it will be fine

Hey man. Nice content. I've had a 4g eclipse GT that I've managed to wreck from a bad rear end alignment I never knew of but got a 95 3000gt. Would love to see what sort of interior designs u came up with and maybe engine mods you are able to disclose.
I have a 4g GT too! I love my 4g it is very comfortable, I have a video on it if you wanna check it out. I have not done anything to the interior yet, on the engine bay i only had an HKS bov, a big fmic with piping, test pipe, and intake

Awesome vid! That sucks about the spun bearing though. Easy fix. Just a pain having to pull out the motor after you just painted it. Too bad you aren't in FL. I have an awd mustang dyno to play with lol

Mitsubishi used to make such cool cars and awesome engines especially for tuning. The Galant VR4 with the awd 2.5v6TT, Eclipse GSX awd 2.0T, 3000gt VR4 with the 3.0TT and of course can't forget the Evo. Such cool cars and each one has a different high performance engine compared to today where most car company's have a few engine choices for their whole lineup (Eclipse gsx has same engine and drivetrain of an evo) Even the Lancer Ralliart was a cool car basically an evo except for that it only came in auto and had 240hp. I'd take an Evo over an STI any day.

No updates yet, it spent like 6 months in shop that didn't do anything so I'm looking at other options now

i know this is an old video but i find it pretty hilarious that we have the same car line-sup save the evo. Got a 1994 3000gt and a 2009 eclipse. Though mine are yellow and white. Though the 3000gt will eventually be getting a fresh coat of paint since its yellow paint job has clearly faded up top . My eclipse though i love the frost white color so leaving it as is. I think i might go for a white color on the 3000gt which works well out here in Arizona..black is a terrible choice its breaks down quickly and generally makes everything hot.
Civil Defense Group I’ve seen white on both cars and they look great, and Arizona heat is horrible white would help a lot. I want to get my eclipse freshly painted again idk if I’m going for blue again or red, and I want to do a 99 conversion on my VR4 and paint it Caracas red, but right now I’m doing an engine swap on it

Malco Alicea It got a spun bearing, it’s basically when the engine is not lubricated properly and the metals rub against each other. This happened because I took it to a shop to install some parts, and they dented my oil pan so much that it blocked the flow of oil from my oil pump to engine internals

Long Nguyen it should be reliable if the required maintenance is done, and I did have all of it done at a shop. But I think that they screwed up somewhere because 50 miles after they installed everything, it spun a bearing

andy leyva it’s a modified hood. You can buy afternarkrt hoods that look like that as well. Search 3000gt evil eyes and you’ll see it
not dumb at all, it is a mod done in the 3000GT community, you add a piece of metal to the hood to make the aggressive look, google 3000GT evil eye mod and you'll find steps to do it
Real nice color. What all did u do? No sanding? Just remove paint, put primer and paint with the paint of your choice? I got a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse and I'm interested in painting as well. Probably you can give me some tips. You're lucky things for you are cheaper. Here in my country, things are just messed up bro.
Markitos Garcia I guess it doesn’t show in the video too well but you can see the fender where I did sand down all the way to original primer, sanded off all clear coat and any fragile cracking paint until it was smooth and free of any imperfections. I started off with a 120 grit to knock down the clear coat quick and ended with a 400. I wet sanded the primer with a 400-600 and the paint as well

JohnnyGT oh okay thanks for the tip bro. And basically I'm from a small country named Belize. Unlike on your end, we don't have half of the things you used there. Basically, real cheap knock offs that'll only last like couple months before paint and gloss starts to crack and peel off. Whatever good quality we wanna get, we gotta order online but to bring it in, special papers/certificates are needed especially for oils, paints, etc. Whatever liquid and uncommon in Belize.
I just bought one GTO SR here in Pakistan with just 38k miles on it. This version has no Turbos. Should I opt for a turbo?
The VR4 is the same engine with 1 turbos right
That is up to you man, if you want more power or not. There are 3 levels for a 3000GT/GTO there’s the base model, SL, and VR4. Only the VR4 is twin turbo, has two turbos from factory.

Looks like you downsized the tires , per the wheel well , it'll be slower , best check the transfer case splines for rust , it's a 9000$ to fix when they strip
This is an old set up but I believe the stock tires are the same width as this, it’s just that I got wider wheels
And transfer cases are actually really cheap, I sold a spare one I had, I have a spare transmission too so I’m good

wow impressed, im repainting my 94 VR4, and about to throw out the bumper. was it worth moding the bumper looks awesome just not sure i could do it. you just bondo/evercoat the hell out of it.....give me the deeets on the evil eye too pls!!

Gold Wolf I took it to a shop to get the timing kit installed, and I specifically told them not to jack it up from the oil pan, well they did, and it dented the oil pan, which starved the engine of oil, by the time I got home it was knocking.
Johnny-GT oh hell no.... I woulda went right back and demanded my money back.... that’s why I’m learning to do everything myself. I don’t trust mechanics to work on my car anymore... often times they break things so people who don’t know Jack about cars have to go back and pay them more money to fix something the mechanic caused. They did that to me twice now, first time I didn’t know anything. The second time they didn’t know I learned a bunch of stuff. Two different places. Now I watch guys like you on line and learn, now I fix everything myself. It takes a long time because I’m slow and not experienced yet but at least I know the job is being done right, or if I mess up, I got no one to blame but myself. So thanks a billion for your videos. I really hope you got your money back. That’s so F’d up.
If one were to keep the vr4 completely stock, how reliable would the car be?
Cyn Ozz they’re supposed to be reliable when all maintenance is done, mine still spun a bearing. I believe the 120k kit was either installed wrong or it had oil starvation due to a slightly dented oil pan, which I instructed the shop to fix but they failed to do so.

Nice work!!!! Beautiful VR4! I own a 1996 3000GT VR4 myself, it's still stock. Little known fact, but the VR4 was faster stock to stock than the z32 300ZX TT and fd3 RX7 TT in a straight line. I owned a 1993 300ZX TT 5 speed manual, i took both to the strip:
*1993 300ZX TT (stock): 13.82@103mph*
*1996 3000GT VR4 (stock): 13.31@105mph*
My VR4 stomped that z in a straight line, dig or roll. The z handled better though, and was more 'fun' to drive, i miss it sometimes, but i like the VR4 better overall. Both are awesome cars, but VR4 ftw imo.

JohnnyGT Did you support the motor from the oil pan when you did the 120k? If so you probably dented the pan and the motor was starved of oil at high rpms.
Andrew McIntosh I did not do the 120k myself, I took it to a shop for fear for screwing up, and I do think they screwed up somewhere.

I guess I didn't explain it too much on the video but a spun bearing means that basically your engine is trashed, pretty common on these engines sadly.

I like these cars, but this is a prime example of why i think even the VR4 is way over valued.
I can see spending 10k on one if someone already had a built engine in one, but as long as these cars have factory internals, they will always be over valued IMO. Even the VR4.
The VR4 shouldn't be worth more than 5.5k because your gonna have to spend another 3k-5k anyways just to make it reliable and for it to be driven as advertised way back in day.
It baffles me that a 4 cylinder GSX of the time was 10x more bullet proof as a 4 cylinder than the flagship 3000GT TT V6 4WD, and thats another reason why the VR4 is over valued.
How can it be called the flagship model when the model that was 2nd in line (eclipse GSX) was cheaper and 10x more reliable?? But I digress.
Just dosent make any sense to me why these cars are even close to 10k right now when you have to drive them like a Camery just to keep them running for a good year.
