In order for the first trick to work, you have to make sure the box “show transformation controls” on the top of Photoshop is ticked. I just realised it’s not the default on all PS versions.
Hello @Jan Wegener I really like to watch your films but I'm wondering, do you think that in this modern times, usage of PS or LR or something else, hasn't gone too far? In my opinion, techniques like in chapter "too tight" are like photomontage not a photo. It's a kind of cheating in my opinion.
@@Goth_PL I think it’s great that you can do whatever you want to your photos. Some like do to more, other less.
But most importantly knowing what can be done and how will be very helpful, whether you gonna use it or not, because one day it will come in handy 😀

My favorite and the one I use is the one that pops open that kept flying out of your hand. I found one with a smaller hole for the Laiwa lens. I use another diffuser as well to soften the light a little more.. Fantastic video!!❤❤

I use your Raw Prosets as a starting point for all my editing and has spent a lot of time practicing my editing skills by use of Jan’s masterclass editing video tutorial. Although still potentials for improvement the masterclass video has brought my editing to another level. What I have the most difficulty with is to bring out the amazing colors as done by Jan. Trust, that I need to practice the use of Color Balance and Selective Color layers more in the future.

Yes I use selective colour a lot like on your motmot and I am not shy to sometimes push saturation a bit, although I prefer to adjust the colours with selective colour. In the end what helps is most is to have some sort of vision what you would want the image to look like before you start editing

I can agree with Glenn on the foreground, I decided not to clean up the sticks keeping it untouched.
On the other hand I was happy there wasn't anything growing in that spot 'cos it could have blocked my clear view.

I'm glad that I don't have any preconceived ideas of how a bird should look. If the colours are a little dull because the light was a little dull, I'm totally fine with that: That's how the world is and I'm not trying to sell my pictures. If a bird is in bright sunlight and therefore spectacularly red, I love it! But if it's overcast ... well if it's too dark or even raining, I might just wait for better weather, but if it's light overcast and the reds turn out less red, then that's how I want it! Only if the reds look less red than they actually did in real life at that particular time would I wish to do corrections.
Editing out straws, twigs or leaves is something I only do on rare occasions when they're very disturbing.
But in your example even I might want to remove at least some of them, so thanks for the tip about splitting them into smaller pieces!
But I once tried editing a photo I'd taken of my lovely cousin Tina. When I looked closely, she actually had many more wrinkles and spots in her face than I'd normally notice (but please don't tell her that). As an experiment I removed them all from the photo, but then it just wasn't Tina anymore. So I really don't like making cosmetic changes to my images.
Adding background, because I made a bad composition, is something I will do if necessary. Using the clone tool I've done for many years, and content aware fill I've used as well.
But stretching the background, well, I don't know... You see, I'm extremely sensitive to incorrect aspect ratios. Some people don't mind watching a video in 16:9 even though it was recorded in 4:3. I simply can't stand that! So the stretching of the bottom of the image would have to be done so subtly that it would be pretty much impossible to spot, or I wouldn't do it.
Jan and Glenn, I’ve been watching your show for a while, and your tips are appreciated. I probably don’t spend enough time on editing. I’m a amateur with limited time. I would love a video on using just Lightroom. I have your prosets and use them often. I can see the value in photoshop, but my workflow is just a lot simpler due to time constraints. Thanks for everything you do to teach!
The challenge is that both Jan and I are VERY keen on the ability to use layers in our workflows. In my opinion PS doesnt need to take longer than LR. You just need to develop a basic workflow. I show you how in my photoshop ebooks...

These 5 hacks are very helpful. The editing process creates an image that allows the viewer to see the bird how the bird was meant ti be seen. I've been using your prosets to begin the editing process. This saves a lot of time. Most of the images I capture are field shots and I never know exactly how the lighting will be or what will be near the bird (sticks, mud eat.). These editing hacks bring quick resolution to the problems in an easy and time saving way.

Great video. Unfortunately a major interest of mine are photographic competitions and the FIAP/PSA rules regarding processing are very limiting- primarily dodging and burning. Am able to employ more extensive processing for calendars etc and your ideas are very helpful.
Thanks for the editing tips. I'm sure I'll watch this episode over a few times. I do the vast majority of my editing in Lightroom. I usually start with a color profile adjustment either Vivid or Landscape. Then I crop if needed, run a DeNoise program (Topaz) followed with the Lightroom masking tools as needed. I finish with the radial gradient to create a soft vignette and that's pretty much it.

Great show guys, loved the hacks, I have the pro sets and the master class just don’t get enough time using them and trying out these new hacks, weather has been so good I’ve spent almost all my time shooting, hard to not be out there with so much wildlife being so active and am to tired when I get home to edit. Thanks for these tips. For me, biggest pain is choosing which images to edit and how much time to spend on each of them and what to do with all other files that are nice but not great
If you aren't excited about the image then just delete it. Keep only your best Images. Less than 1%
I am sure Glenn will say delete them. I usually like to keep a bunch of images around in case I change my mind or want to edit something different in the future

After a while it will come natural. You mainly need to know which areas to clone from and to drag the patch tool to. Ideally they have the same colours and no patterns

Excellent tips, definitely have given me some more tools to use when dealing with challenging sticks/leaves/grass intruding on my subjects. Countless ruined shots from those things, now I might have a chance to save some images! That being said, the toughest skill in post for me is exactly that: cloning techniques when the background is complex, or I have to recreate a blocked portion of a subject.

Hi Jan: I have a question about your Masterclass. With all the updates from Adobe for photoshop and Lightroom, do you update your masterclass curriculum to take advantage of the new tools that seem to be added every few months with the Adobe subscription model?

My Masterclass doesn’t rely on any ever changing tools. The tools I teach have not changed pretty much at all. My workflow is based on adjustment layers etc. which have been the same for ages. Some cloning may be easier if the AI tools really worked better in the future. But for now I use every day what I teach on there. The only thing that has changed is that I use my prosets instead of the Adobe profiles and the look of acr, but what I do there is still the same too

Hmmm, that would be quite a unique challenge. I guess you'd have to work more with the histograms and charts etc to see where an optimal colour may sit

fabulous episode Jan and Glenn, really love it but i am totally hopeless in photo editing, yes i got inspired by many of your videos, but never understood the layers and masks, and now mostly i use DXO Photolab 6. before 6 weeks got some shots of the Arabian sunbird which one of them got notable in birdguide but i am sure if it was edited by one of your brilliant methods it would have been POW, wishful thinking, lOL.

Another very helpful video guys. I do not use Photoshop but Affinity Photo so my biggest frustration is I can't use your prosets! That said Affinity does a pretty good job, still learning even at my advanced age, for instance I didn't realise until recently there were so many ways of using masks!

Jan, I've always been curious about your course, it arouses a certain curiosity in me. There's even a photograph I took in 2020, of an asio stygius (Stygian Owl), which I was never able to adjust correctly, due to the light that was at the time. This one I'd like to send you, and see how it would look with your knowledge using your editing method.

I bought the lightroom prosets and I'm thinking about also getting the masterclass editing video. I'm reasonably competent with lightroom but a beginner with photoshop, does the masterclass editing video take me step by step through what I need to do in photoshop?

Biggest issue in editing for me is capturing a bird at about 30 meters at 500 mm ( 100-500 RF) and then needing to aggressively crop. So what’s the ideal workflow and do you apply Topaz Gigapixel? Or maybe I should be using the new firmware for the R5.
Ideally you can try to get as many pixels on the bird as possible. But yes focal length is always an issue. I don't use gigapixel personally.
Hi Jan & Glenn, thanks for these great hacks! I fully get why you use them this way. But unfortunately these are Photoshop tricks which are lacking from my editor being DxO Photolab 😞
I've read Adobe recently upped its game with some AI Denoise option. Are they now approaching the level of DxO DeepPrimeXD, or is DxO still ahead of the pack ??
That's a good question... We'll have to do a comparison soon
I think Adobe still has some catching up to do. In my experience DeepPrimeXD works better than Adobe Denoise.
I haven’t tried it much, but from what I have seen dxo is still ahead when it comes to details
@@jan_wegener I assume it will also depend whether Adobe already applies it on the (native) raw file (like what DxO is doing) or rather at the end of the flow like Topaz. Both moments can make sense actually: upfront noise removal like you use DxO PureRaw in your flow provides a great start, but in case one couldn't "expose to the right" enough (even when that's one of your other great lessons !!) and you brighten up some darks then this introduces processing noise which can be dealt with Topaz at the end.
I guess the Adobe denoise does not act on both sides of the flow ..

I guess my biggest problem, or “mistake” in editing is sometimes trying to fix an image which, after some time, I realise is just not very good. Editing an already pretty good photo is just al lot easier…😉

I can never decide whether to darken background or lighten. I feel like selecting bird and lightening it with darker background makes it pop, but i see yours more lightened.
For me it depends upon the mood of the shot at the appropriate habitat of the bird.
I definitely go for light and I avoid dark green
Hey guys, awesome video. However, when I try the same techniques in Photoshop, my Ps does not respond like your demonstration. For example, I tried the technique of adding space at the bottom of the frame. When I press the shift key and select the move tool my rectangle does not have the "move squares" to grab and pull down. Not sure what I am doing wrong or if there is a setting that I need to adjust in Ps.
You need to tick "show transform controls" at the top of the screen 👍
I had a similar issue. To fix it, after you select the Move tool, make sure that you have a check in the Show Transform Controls checkbox in the horizontal toolbar at the top of Photoshop.

I think one of my biggest struggles is how far to take the brightness, saturation of colors, and contrast. I always think "less is more" which I've heard countless times, but then I see your images which are always so vibrant. When I try it, it always just looks overdone. Then again, most birds I'm photographing aren't very colorful in the first place.
Yes thats always tricky.....I try to keep them looking natural....but like the absolute nicest specimen of the species. Right on the edge!
I think more is more tbh. I like to go for what looks best and how I like my images to look and experience nature myself

Hi guys, I have a question regarding your presets. Are they made mostly for Photoshop or would they work 100% with Lightroom Classic (6.31) ?
They work with LR, but only from version 7.0 up i believe. With older versions you cannot add profiles

Hello both. Jan, where you go over removing an object in front of feathers, have you tried the new Photoshop remove tool which has been shown to be far more accurate than previous content aware fill.
Just on a trip atm but I will do more. It definitely looks better, but I have a feeling you will always need the clone tool to fix up a tricky job like that
The new remove tool is still only in beta version, but should make it to release soon. It is said to be "AI" driven (aren't they all now?). I have played with it a lot the past few days and it is quite amazing - it will replace 90%+ of the cloning work I do I suspect. It will be a game-changer for many.

Hi Jan, I have another question regarding your Bird editing course. I do know you have not been well, so I do apologise for having to ask, but should I buy the bird editing course, does it also cover the latest Photoshop updates? i.e. Have you yet had the opportunity to add sections to cover the latest updates?
All I teach in there hasn't changed except for the look of Camera RAW, but that doesn't affect what I do there. Only differences that I now use my Presets instead of Adobe Profiles
My workflow isn't really based on some fancy stuff that changes all the time, but on important layers etc so it's just as up to date as it was when it first came out.

What about using the new Remove tool?
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. You will still need to know how to use the clone tool to clean things up a bit

Since you can’t really use layers in LR I don’t think it will work.

Almost elimimates content aware film and stamp tool, for removing sticks, grass etc.
Yes it can do good stuff, nice to see it develop more
Probably the new way to go that tool and close stamp to clean up
You'll have far less issues with colour if you use a colorchecker or McBeth chart and create some profiles under various lighting conditions. You'll get accurate colour for your camera (and even lens) rather than using a generic profile.
Only takes a few mins to create one and the difference is substantial
That’s part of what we did with our own profiles, but the red for instance is often still off so we have some variations
@@jan_wegener it's part of my job to maintain a high accuracy throughout colour management workflow. I would think some of the issues with birds would be the high luminance and iridescence of feathers. It would start to fall out of dynamic range and potentially out of gamut. Just like the blue streak on the bird in the video you posted. Further to that, a camera profile created under full sunlight still may not be precisely the same as another shot under full sun if the sun is lower or higher in the sky. The colour temperature will still shift.
Sometimes accuracy is not always exactly what you want though when shooting for aesthetics.
At least under even and diffuse light, a McBeth chart and camera profile will get very close. Ideally you'd want to walk up to the bird and ask if it minds standing next to the colour chart while you take a shot so you can profile for that exact scene correctly!

It’s pretty much trial and error. You can see my settings on upper rhs. And then it’s just about learning how much to use it. I always use it on a separate layer so I can reverse all changes

I have studied Jan’s masterclass so I’m pretty up to speed but my biggest issue still remains getting the white balance right. I am seriously colorblind, and WB is the starting point for all other changes… and getting that starting point right is a nightmare for me.
It can be tricky for sure when you’re not sure where you’re going with your edit. And unfortunately there’s no right or wrong with WB. You can use the colour picker on a white area but that often makes it look funny.

At 7:17, I have a hard time imagining how you rebuilt that wing using the clone and patch tools alone... did you use another exposure with a different view of the wing?

@@geoffreybrooks6041 I mainly used the clone tool and patch tool, but it helps to get the wing outline somewhere and just merge it, if it’s this obstructed

My problem is Photoshop phobia. I start editing and end up accidentally doing something that completely mucks up my image, don’t understand what I did, and can’t figure out how to undo it.
I'd recommend sticking to a good basic workflow first (like I teach in my ebook). Then save the file and muck around a bit more and see if you can make it better or just revert to the basic saved file.
If you do everything on a new adjustment layer each time, you can just delete the layer and start again. That’s one of the strengths of PS
My biggest problem with editing is me, I really dislike editing 😂 I really must bite the bullet and increase my editing skills.
It’s a necessary evil but can also be fun

Boy, I sure could not get the results you describe…only trying to add a little space on one side of my shot but the techniques you show just didn’t work! I don’t use PS that much but I can’t get it to do what you show. Leary of buying video classes when I can’t get a simple task to work. Thanks for showing but it didn’t work for me.

Ok go ahead and do all these if you want, but except for the blue patch double-RAW, I consider all these types of manipulations I don't like to see.

Certainly up to each individual...But I prefer to use the tools available to make my images look the best they can...
