    Love editing old images. My first camera was a Brownie...and I've been taking photos ever since those early 1950 days. Now retired, I finally have time to 'rescue' so many of my 'compromised' images. Working hard on culling many, from over 400,000 (literally) images cataloged on Lightroom. Love your awesome, informative, thorough and to=the=point video tutorials...especially those featuring my favorite tools, Canons, Photoshop and Lightroom. The BEST tutorials I've found to date. Working towards getting your complete Master Class.

    Fabulous before and after results. I've got some shots that I sort of gave up on, but couldn't bear to delete. You got me excited about diving back into them to see if I can rescue them.
    I came from the old school of film and darkroom. When I finally moved to digital, I was sort of hard-headed about "getting it right in the field". And even though I was forced to learn some Photoshop techniques, I recently had to face the fact that my editing skills were keeping me from producing the best images I could get from my photos. My wife bought your master class for me for my birthday recently. I've been on a remodeling project, so I haven't started it. This video lit a fire on diving into it.
    Always great content, and much appreciated.

  • @brianlemke6017
    @brianlemke6017 7 місяців тому

    Great tutorial, Jan. Some very useful steps.
    What was most interesting was you are working with 6-8MP files from two or three generations ago, not to mention the lenses of the day. You were able to clean them up beautifully and, if you want to print them large, I’m sure the image enhance/size tools in either of LR or PS would bring them close to the quality and detail of the current generation of cameras.
    As much as gear junkies like me obsess about it, pixel counts are somewhat over-emphasized, especially north of 20-24MP

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  7 місяців тому +1

      Yes you can definitely still get a lot out of these files, but it’s trickier once you start cropping etc
      And you saw I used the 2x TC a lot to get the birds large in the frame

  • @andymok7945
    @andymok7945 7 місяців тому

    Great tips. I am amazed what I was able to get out of an 8MP image from my Canon 30D. I had a macro image of a bumble bee on a cone flower. I did some cropping to frame it properly. I was able to make a 22" x 33" print of it and it looked amazing. My current setup is the OM Systems OM-1 and the Olympus 150-400 f/4.5 lens (This lens was a new purchase, ouch) and only weighs 4.3 lbs. I also have the Olympus 100-400mm as well. I have your master class along with the Pro set and recently got the Brush Pack. I have started to go back and and re-process some of my older images and and just enjoying how much better they look now. Yeah the bufflehead is a beautiful bird and always enjoy seeing them here in Canada during the winter time. The Hooded Merganser is another beauty and has black and white on the head. So, it is hard to get a good exposure in bright light.

    Over here I'm still culling from my 60k Bali images .. and because she lost her patience, my wife started editing some of my images already. That's actually an interesting experience as well ;-) Sometimes that gives interesting insights in how I take my shots, or alternative ways to edit.

    Great Video Jan! I have a question about your Prosets. When I apply them to a correctly exposed image (Nikon Z6ii profile), the images seem to become slightly overexposed with almost every Proset. Is this normal? Thanks.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  7 місяців тому +1

      They tend to make the images a little bit brighter. Usually not too bright. If that’s the case you could pull the exposure slider back a tad or throttle the prosets a bit with the slider. Adobe treats different cameras differently. It’s possible the z6 Ii is a tad brighter than sone others or you master exposure exceptionally well 😀

    Hi! Great video as always, exciting prospects if they turn out true, will see.
    Nikon coming out with a global shutter sports camera sounds possible and explains a few things: why Sony announced so soon (wanted to be first with global shutter) and the fact that sports photographers actually need less MPs. But it’s funny how everyone, including canon’s customers, trounced the R3 because it had “only” 24 mp and it was 6000$… well, wouldn’t you know… looking at you Sony…
    And of course Nikon, now, can have a global shutter camera, since they use Sony’s sensors, and Sony already pushed on one of their cameras, so, now, Nikon can also have it… doesn’t sound good to me, but it is possible.
    Honestly, I think Canon is being the smartest company: they don’t pay attention to internet discussions, they listen to actual photographers about what they actually need! Why the R1 would have a global shutter and then be handicapped in DR and ISO performance? Do photographers actually need a global shutter? Not right now, but when the technology is a little more stable, then they will implement it. But maybe I’m wrong, who knows? Those are my 2 cents!
    All best!

      sometimes it wouldn't hurt to listen a tiny bit :D

    • @Carlos-tm6zk
      @Carlos-tm6zk 7 місяців тому

      @@jan_wegener yeah, I get what you mean, especially in terms of lenses, I think they should do better.
      But with camera bodies I think, now, they are having a good approach, but I could be wrong… for example, I think the canon r5 ii won’t have a stacked sensor and that will shock the internet… but if it has a faster readout speed and 60mps, with fast fps, is it really that bad? The Sony a7r v was released last year and, besides the ai chip and 8k, didn’t bring anything substantially new to the table and it’s a (very) slow camera… sometimes, the internet tends to focus to much on specks and forget about the general usability of the gear.
      But, anyway, I don’t mean to be dismissive, you have a lot more experience than I do in this field.
      All best!

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  7 місяців тому +1

      @@Carlos-tm6zk I don't think they would be able to get the read out into the 3-4ms range that is needed to eliminate the wobbles and rolling shutter. If they can though I wound't care whether it's stacked or not. But even the R3 is 5.5ms and has a stacked sensor.

      @@jan_wegener yes, I guess you’re right… I have been hearing that Canon is improving the sensor manufacturing technology, meaning that probably they will be able to improve on stacked sensor technology, also they will eliminate some supply chain constraints, if this is accurate anyway.

      All best!

    What is your impression of simply pressing "Auto" when editing in Lightroom or Photoshop?
