  • In my first bird photography image editing video, I said I wanted to start a fun new project, where I edit some of your bird images and that's what I'm gonna do today!
    Thanks for everyone who sent me their bird photos already. I put them all in a big folder and will pick the most suitable bird photos to edit from time to time.
    I want to use these videos to show you some of the techniques that I use to get the absolute most out of my images and show you how you can do the same.
    To send me your bird images head to my Instagram and send me a bird photo you'd like me to edit in a DM.
    Check out my Masterclass on Image Editing!

      This is why I use DXOPhotolab2, I can make adjustments to different areas of the bird using U-point control points, reduce the blown highlights on the branch separately using the same U-point control points, I can do this to the entire image anywhere I think adjustments need to be made, it fixes all those issues swiftly, Clearview plus would also have done a fantastic job of bringing back the lost highlights with a slider adjustment from 0-100, reason I left Lightroom and Photoshop, and then I do my final touches in Affinity Photo.
      Sorry but Lightroom is tedious and takes too long, I rather be out shooting than wasting time in PP.

    Thanks Jan these really are like pulling back the curtain and seeing how the wizard creates the magic. For some reason a lot of wildlife photographers don't mention or discuss their photo editing and some tend to perpetuate the myth of the straight out of camera untouched wildlife photograph. I have been struggling for quite a long time with Lightroom to get edges that are seamless between branches and backgrounds or birds and backgrounds, but I can see with this video that photoshop just offers so much more control and precision for this. Great content, keep it coming =)

      Thanks !very true words! Editing is just standard and nothing to be ashamed of. I like to push it a bit further when it comes to colours, but that's up to ervyone's taste. I'm a relatively new bird photographer (working with the Nikon D500 and 200-500 lens) so far only editing in lightroom and yeah still getting that issue with too dark backgrounds as as try to lighten them up blowing out the front feathers of the bird and losing feather detail. Think I will have to check out your seminar master class video. By the way I run online courses at university and I'm really impressed with your material. Hi Jan, that’s a fascinating exercise. Really appreciate you posting it. The simple idea of processing the raw file twice to for highlights and the base image is really clever. I haven’t thought of that before and it is so simple yet powerful to preserve the best of what the raw file has to offer.
    You mentioned also saving a feathered version of the selection. What is the purpose of that and how did you use it?
    Thanks again,
    Craig

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 роки тому

      Hi,
      I use it so I can make changes to the bird or background individually and it doesn't show up, because I have a small feathered area that gives me a smooth transition. If you use a hard edge, all changes are immediately visible.

  • @NagiAboulenein
    @NagiAboulenein 2 роки тому

    With LR's much-improved masking support, would you still follow this recipe (multiple files combined into layers in PS), or would you now select your subject using an LR mask, apply locally masked changes to recover blown highlights, etc, and similarly for the background? Thanks!

    That's a really big crop! Do you have any restrictions on how much you're willing to crop in? I'd imagine this wouldn't really be usable outside of social media.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 роки тому

      Geoffrey Brooks that was probably more than I would normally crop, too. I just stuck with the original crop for comparison. In saying this, with modern technology it shouldn’t be a problem to print this at least 40x60cm and get a decent result. It would also easily be enough to be printed in many magazines, too. When digital started out, cameras only had 4-8mpix and images were printed large etc without problems.
      Generally the less you crop the better, though. To crop this much personally, it would have to be a special bird or image.
