@@rent101 It sadly seems to be these days. There is a very good 3 part documentary made by Ian Hislop for the BBC I think its called " The British stiff upper lip" , it explains pretty well where that kind of stoicism comes from, worth a watch if you like that sort of thing.
@Nicky L My Dad didn't even pass his 11 plus, never went to any fancy school, worked hard and was a life long Labour supporter, yet he had all the same British traits as the toffs your moaning about. I am not a son but I am a daughter who loved her father dearly he passed away in my arms😢 and I thank God I was there for him❤ I will be honest this song broke me😞
The story goes this was the first time James had sung it to his dad who only recently had been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure and was not expected to survive unless a donor could be found (which by some miracle, a distant relative came forwards and was a match...) It was recorded exactly as we see it, without 'Auto-Tune' because James wanted it to be a real and totally genuine gift to his dad. We see the raw emotion in James' face as he was singing and I can understand why. Personally, I don't know how he managed to produce the song as well as he did. People say that now, his dad is doing well, so thank God for that.
In your spare time it's worth looking into James Blunt (Blount), served his country (as did his father) and genuinely has a great sense of humour and all round nice guy. He's the kinda nice guy to comment on videos like this!
What I love about this video is that despite it being about how it's time for the son to "chasing the monsters away" at the end his father's instinct is still to comfort his son.
Love James, been listening to him since I was little, he was also an officer in th British army and served in Bosnia in th 90s, his song “no bravery” is about his time there, it heartbreaking but beautiful! Lucky enough to see him live 3 times with my dad and he’s incredible, this song makes me cry so much every single time, would give anything to show my dad this now😭♥️

This song got me through my dad's illness and initial mourning (because as you said, it never really ends). I still cry my eyes out each and every time I hear it, this time included

At the time of this video Mr Blount senior was gravely ill, stage 4 kidney disease, was not expected to live much longer. He had also previously donated one of his kidneys. This was most definitely a goodbye song. As a result of this video a distant cousin came forward and was miraculously a match so could donate a kidney. No one else family/friends etc had been suitable. Both James and his father were high ranking officers in the British Army so epitome of British ‘stiff upper lip’, not used to openly showing emotion. As far as I’m aware don’t think they have ever been estranged at any point. Thank you for your reaction.
TheNath272000 As I thought. The line ‘I’m not your son, you’re not my Father, we’re just two men saying goodbye’ seems to confuse a lot of people reacting to this song. The first assumption tends to be that Dad was an absent Father and they were not close, thank you!
Also, don't want to send you down a rabbit hole of emotional songs, but he has a LOT of them... In my opinion you should do No Bravery at least. And ALWAYS use his official music videos, they are often as important to his meaning.
James is better known for love songs but always wearing his heart on his sleeve. He used to be a tank caommander, a major in the British Army who had his guitar strapped on the outside of his tank as there was no room inside. His father was a colonel and helicopter pilot. Two strong men clearly, but strong men know how to cry too. Another emotional song James did about his time in Kosovo was No Bravery. Worth a look. Incidentally James was responsible for arguably preventing WW3 when he refused to obey a command from higher up which would have been disastrous had he carried it out.
I never knew my biological father. My Mum married my step father when I was 5. I lost him when I was 25, he may not have been my father but he was my Dad. He was 16 years older than my Mum , so there were some generational attitude differences but he was always my Dad. The year after he died the Mike and the Mechanics song 'The Living Years' came out. I choke up. every time I hear it and this song does the same. Treasure them while you have them, not when it's too late.
I have met James a couple of times as a friend of mines husband is his agent, really nice guy remember also meeting his parents at the after show at Hammersmith.
We often find ourselves within this songs words..i can see from comments im not the only one to lose a parent i lost my father in april last year,86 yrs old . he had alzheimers but an infection which turned to sepsis took his life .i was his carer for 3 yrs and the night they took him to hospital and the begging from him not to admit him to the hospital plus the fight he gave in the hospital room when they wanted to check him over was truly a nightmare to watch, for all those who like me have witnessed a loss may we all find comfort from songs & from our memories.

That just gives me a lift. It's important to be reminded that people are good in these cynical times. Cheers lads.
The monsters are the ones your kids think are under the bed and it's a great metaphor to use. Well done for getting through this song. You can try Billy Bragg's Tank Park Salute, not as tear jerky but brilliant lyrics.
You might also like to react to another emotional heavy-hitter of his 'Carry You Home,' which is a tribute to a comrade he lost in combat during his time in the army. One of my favourites of his, even if both the song and the video make me cry like a baby every time.
well as children growing up,,, our Daddy's chased all the monsters away,,,, and what he was saying to his Dad is it was time for him to switch roles and be the one who chases the monsters away from his Dad and be the one to look out for him now. What a strong message ,, 'done be afraid, its my turn to chase the monsters in life away'
hi, guys. love your show. i know you don't do many musical pieces and what you will do must be something a bit special, that stands out from the crowd, so i'd like to recommend something by Pink Floyd. they were not main stream pop, so only their fans might know about this, but they did a concert, in 1994, called 'P.U.L.S.E.' we think of it as THE greatest concert of all time, by ANYone, partly because of the spectacular visuals and light show. however, if you google 'the best guitar solo of all time', one from this concert is right up there. not because it's technically hard, but because of the emotional effect it evokes. the song is 'Comfortably Numb'. everyone who does react to it, thinks, WOW! so i think you'll like it and consider it well worth checking out. David Gilmour is the guitarist and he always improvises, in live concerts, so it has to be this concert's version that you react to. all the best.
😂😂😂😂FAIL. I told you, you could not pause when he done the monsters line. With that said, I had to watch your reaction vid and now I'm in tears again. So there's that.🤷♂️👍

Mike and the mechanics ~ the living years - please
Amazing song that gets people to share. Thank you for sharing your stories
I'd not heard this before. James Blunt is very underestimated, he writes from the heart. I lost my father and that really hit home.
Also worth mentioning that James Blunt donated all profits from this song to help for heroes and royal British legion charities
His father was diagnosed with terminal kidney disease. After James wrote this song, he found a donor at the eleventh hour and was saved.
James Blunt is one of those ones where you either love him or hate him, I love him he’s had some belters.
Been watching you guys for a long time now. Like everyone I've been through some dark times recently after the pandemic etc. I love checking in for a laugh or like this video sharing some emotion but most importantly it's just really clear that you are great dudes with a great friendship.

I’m so glad I listened to your reactions. Very wise words from young men 🇨🇦♥️🇨🇦
I cry every time I listen to this wonderful song♥️
You might also like to react to another emotional heavy-hitter of his 'Carry You Home,' which is a tribute to a comrade he lost in combat during his time in the army. One of my favourites of his, even if both the song and the video make me cry like a baby every time.
Love your genuine responses to this
well as children growing up,,, our Daddy's chased all the monsters away,,,, and what he was saying to his Dad is it was time for him to switch roles and be the one who chases the monsters away from his Dad and be the one to look out for him now. What a strong message ,, 'done be afraid, its my turn to chase the monsters in life away'
I’ve never heard that before I’m in bits now ❤️
MAN! I Love you Guys, Talk about trying to hold tha' tears back MAN! How tha' he'll did he manage to get to the end-of-the-song MAN! Xxx.
hi, guys. love your show. i know you don't do many musical pieces and what you will do must be something a bit special, that stands out from the crowd, so i'd like to recommend something by Pink Floyd. they were not main stream pop, so only their fans might know about this, but they did a concert, in 1994, called 'P.U.L.S.E.' we think of it as THE greatest concert of all time, by ANYone, partly because of the spectacular visuals and light show. however, if you google 'the best guitar solo of all time', one from this concert is right up there. not because it's technically hard, but because of the emotional effect it evokes. the song is 'Comfortably Numb'. everyone who does react to it, thinks, WOW! so i think you'll like it and consider it well worth checking out. David Gilmour is the guitarist and he always improvises, in live concerts, so it has to be this concert's version that you react to. all the best.
All proceeds from the song were donated to Help For Hero's a UK veterans charity as both James and his dad had been in the army.
Brilliant song and performance, brilliant reaction guys!
I've watched the video or reactions to it maybe 20 times now, and somebody has been chopping onions every time. What are the odds!?
😂😂😂😂FAIL. I told you, you could not pause when he done the monsters line. With that said, I had to watch your reaction vid and now I'm in tears again. So there's that.🤷♂️👍
To see the other side of James blunt look up his funny tweets on the Graham Norton show, you WILL laugh
I have lost both my parents (anchors) now and have had to be the adult in the room. I can tell you, though, from first-hand experience, that the hardest loss is a child. Thanks for reacting to this incredible man's talent, song, and voice.
Sending you strength and healing vibes internet stranger.
