    his dad was late stage kidney failure and couldnt find a kidney , James and his dad were both soldiers .James wrote this song to say goodbye to his dad and when it was released a distant relative in Australia saw it and donated a kidney . while they were filming this everyone was crying except his dad who asked why everyone was crying

    • @ianelley
      @ianelley 2 роки тому +2

      @@rent101 It sadly seems to be these days. There is a very good 3 part documentary made by Ian Hislop for the BBC I think its called " The British stiff upper lip" , it explains pretty well where that kind of stoicism comes from, worth a watch if you like that sort of thing.

    • @ianelley
      @ianelley 2 роки тому +7

      @Nicky L My Dad didn't even pass his 11 plus, never went to any fancy school, worked hard and was a life long Labour supporter, yet he had all the same British traits as the toffs your moaning about. Hard as it seems for you to accept, that is the way past generations, ( especially the war generations) were.

    The story goes this was the first time James had sung it to his dad who only recently had been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure and was not expected to survive unless a donor could be found (which by some miracle, a distant relative came forwards and was a match...) It was recorded exactly as we see it, without 'Auto-Tune' because James wanted it to be a real and totally genuine gift to his dad. We see the raw emotion in James' face as he was singing and I can understand why. Personally, I don't know how he managed to produce the song as well as he did. People say that now, his dad is doing well, so thank God for that.

    In your spare time it's worth looking into James Blunt (Blount), served his country (as did his father) and genuinely has a great sense of humour and all round nice guy. He's the kinda nice guy to comment on videos like this!

    At the time of this video Mr Blount senior was gravely ill, stage 4 kidney disease, was not expected to live much longer. He had also previously donated one of his kidneys. This was most definitely a goodbye song. As a result of this video a distant cousin came forward and was miraculously a match so could donate a kidney. No one else family/friends etc had been suitable. Both James and his father were high ranking officers in the British Army so epitome of British ‘stiff upper lip’, not used to openly showing emotion. As far as I’m aware don’t think they have ever been estranged at any point. Thank you for your reaction.

      As I thought. The line ‘I’m not your son, you’re not my Father, we’re just two men saying goodbye’ seems to confuse a lot of people reacting to this song. The first assumption tends to be that Dad was an absent Father and they were not close, thank you!

    James is better known for love songs but always wearing his heart on his sleeve. He used to be a tank caommander, a major in the British Army who had his guitar strapped on the outside of his tank as there was no room inside. His father was a colonel and helicopter pilot. Two strong men clearly, but strong men know how to cry too. Another emotional song James did about his time in Kosovo was No Bravery. Worth a look. Incidentally James was responsible for arguably preventing WW3 when he refused to obey a command from higher up which would have been disastrous had he carried it out.

    His father was diagnosed with terminal kidney disease. After James wrote this song, he found a donor at the eleventh hour and was saved.

    Been watching you guys for a long time now. Like everyone I've been through some dark times recently after the pandemic etc. I love checking in for a laugh or like this video sharing some emotion but most importantly it's just really clear that you are great dudes with a great friendship. That just gives me a lift. It's important to be reminded that people are good in these cynical times. Cheers lads.

    The monsters are the ones your kids think are under the bed and it's a great metaphor to use. Well done for getting through this song. You can try Billy Bragg's Tank Park Salute, not as tear jerky but brilliant lyrics.

    You might also like to react to another emotional heavy-hitter of his 'Carry You Home,' which is a tribute to a comrade he lost in combat during his time in the army. One of my favourites of his, even if both the song and the video make me cry like a baby every time.

    well as children growing up,,, our Daddy's chased all the monsters away,,,, and what he was saying to his Dad is it was time for him to switch roles and be the one who chases the monsters away from his Dad and be the one to look out for him now. What a strong message ,, 'done be afraid, its my turn to chase the monsters in life away'

    hi, guys. love your show. i know you don't do many musical pieces and what you will do must be something a bit special, that stands out from the crowd, so i'd like to recommend something by Pink Floyd. they were not main stream pop, so only their fans might know about this, but they did a concert, in 1994, called 'P.U.L.S.E.' we think of it as THE greatest concert of all time, by ANYone, partly because of the spectacular visuals and light show. however, if you google 'the best guitar solo of all time', one from this concert is right up there. not because it's technically hard, but because of the emotional effect it evokes. the song is 'Comfortably Numb'. everyone who does react to it, thinks, WOW! so i think you'll like it and consider it well worth checking out. David Gilmour is the guitarist and he always improvises, in live concerts, so it has to be this concert's version that you react to. all the best.
