    Hey officer401. I'm an Army medic and I feel the need to bring up a few points about your last items. A set of two proper chest seals can be bought for around $15 on Amazon. A big concern I have with the tampon method is that you're putting that into their chest cavity. There is a large potential for creating more damage with that. You really don't want to place anything into a chest or abdominal cavity unless necessary. Also exit wounds can be much larger than a tampon could occlude. A good method I'd recommend that's better on the wallet is duct tape and ziplock bags or a similar airtight material. With a chest wound you really want to make a seal. At your level you don't want air moving either way. In my opinion the best and most cost effective way for you to be sealing chest wounds would be a nonporous material like a ziplock bag or a sheet protector taped airtight on all four sides. For other non chest/abdominal wounds I'd recommend just gauze and pressure. Don't pack or place tampons in anything if you don't have to. I'd personally avoid the tampons altogether. I could take or leave the pads. There are far better similarly priced options in my opinion. If you want to talk about any tips or tricks or have any other potential wounds you'd like input on let me know.

      Truck drivers have to go to some very bad areas of town. We also, most of the time, are first people to arrive at motor vehicle collisions. I have advanced first aid training and keep up on it. And in an emergency a sterile maxi pad is better than someone bleeding to death.

    1) Latex gloves are a NO. Allergies can be to rescuer and victim alike. Go for vinyl or nitrile gloves. They are sooo much better.
    2) Tampons and pads are a NO too. Evidence-based medicine and study recommend a commercially-prepared tourniquet, hemostatic agent and Israeli Bandage for example.
    This is coming from a critical care and emergency nurse, prehospital care educator, and gun enthusiast aka me.

    Never use Tampons to seal a gunshot wound, it will reduce bleeding by maybe 10%. It's not worth the time and once somebody with medical training appears it is just in the way.
    Ask your department for a real trauma control class and then get yourself at least two big IFAKs (individual first aid kits). Have a tourniquet (SOF-T-Wide are better than CAT) and a israeli bandage for limb wounds and Celox/QuickClot gauze (hemostatic agents) and chest seals for bodyshots. Add gloves and medical sheers to remove clothes, visit a class where you learn how to use these things properly (or take an hour to learn it from a officer who was in the military and knows how to use these things) and you can actually save some lifes.

    • @Ekib-Niatnuom

      Totally agree with you Aghate. Ofc 401 I know you are getting hammered with the new Detective job but there is nothing better than actual training for the GSW scenario you laid out. I HIGHLY suggest a TECC/TCCC class esp for LEO and EMS types. Many are offered here in Georgia. If you need help finding one message me and I'll find one for you.
      Also, on the subject of gloves and hand sanitizer if you talk real nice to the local ER or an Ambulance crew they are usually more than happy to part with those items. Thanks.

    • @xaderalert
      @xaderalert 7 років тому +12

      Couldn't agree more on every point.
      I will add one caveat though. While the SOF-T are more effective overall, you should always have at least one CAT on you, as they are much easier to self-apply one-handed.
      Also an NPA and lube is a good thing to have on hand. Especially as a first responder to collisions where the airway may be compromised.

    • @texasranger24
      @texasranger24 7 років тому +8

      Tanner Anders well, i would consider a nasopharyngeal airway as "advanced first aid". Yes it is a good first responder tool and i have one in my big ifak, as well as a compact one way Mouth to Mouth Valve/rebreathing mask, chest decomposition needle,... But for those things you really should know what you are doing, not just a 3 hour trauma class (ok, the reanimation is, but you get the point. Trauma IFAK in something like a hsgi blowout pouch that i have on my belt is different than the complete first aid bag in my truck...)

    • @xaderalert
      @xaderalert 7 років тому +4

      Fair point, but in the context of this video (patrol car), I'd think that would necessitate a more complete first responder trauma kit, including airway, rather than just an individual blowout kit.

    what's the difference between sheriff and police officer and is it easier to become a sheriff?

    • @caelodevorago608
      @caelodevorago608 7 років тому +11

      A sheriff is a police officer.
      Sheriff, in USA points, runs a County jurisdiction usually. They may even have State wide jurisdiction, where as normal level police officers will have just their local area (City, town, village, ect)

    • @Rangerfan-gz1rx

      SuddleMercury I think he meant deputies.

    • @POPJack1717
      @POPJack1717 7 років тому +7

      Gerardo Marquez sheriffs are cops. The main difference is amount of jurisdiction. Regular "Police officers " only have jurisdiction in their city/town. Sheriffs have jurisdiction in their entire county, including all cities and towns located therein. Also the sheriff is a constitutional position, police depts are not. lastly, State Police have (usually) jurisdiction throughout their entire state and can enforce the law everywhere inside said state; however there are a few exceptions depending on the state. In some states, state police are known as highway patrol and only have jurisdiction on state highways.

    • @shadowshatto
      @shadowshatto 7 років тому +2

      Deputies are the ones you're going to see running around in "Sheriff" vehicles, not actual Sheriffs as there is only one Sheriff to a county and it's much more paperwork and political than it is policing.

    • @swinde

      My house burnt to the ground when I was 16 and my best friend and I escaped and rescued my dog. We were in an unincorporated area and 3 fire departments responded. My advice would be to try to be considerate of the people who live there and not just check for injury. I was cut and bruised but I just wanted someone to tell me it would be ok. I understand you aren't going to give me therapy, but someone checking on the bleeding 16 year old that went back into a fire to save a dog would have been nice. I guess just be compassionate would be my advice. I am not a first reponder (yet) but as someone who has been through the receiving end that would be my advice.

    Hey Brother, I would not recommend max pads or tampons for massive bleeding for chest wounds or bullet wounds. For your everday Trama kit, you should carry at lest 1 QuickQlot Gauze, one isreal bandage and two chest wound seals. This will come in handy when you need. Go to the youtuber: SkinnyMedic and he even breaks down the reasons why you shouldn't carry tampons to stop serious bleeding. Be safe out there brother!

      LOL
      I had an FTO that told me a story about when he was a rookie, he accidentally performed CPR on a known gang-member that got involved in a shootout with police that day and had a GSW. My FTO at the time didn't realize that CPR would cause this guy too bleed out more and when they rushed him to the ER, the attending physician said, "you were suppose to stop the bleeding, not do chest compression you numb nuts!" Overall, not all Police Officer are educated and trained in EMT or Paramedics but are also not liable if someone dies in their care (similar to the good Samaritan Law) this is called the "Good Faith Law" for Police Officers. I hope this satisfies your question.

      Trauma pads are basically oversized Maxi pads. The ambulances around here used to carry Maxi pads before the trauma pads were made. I think they also used to carry jumbo sized tampons for the same reason. Remember: Everything stops bleeding eventually.

    My daughter is Autistic, MR (mildly retarded) and non-verbal. She would, for the most part, fit the stereotypical mold of what is seen as Autism on TV or youtube. No eye contact, won't respond to commands, won't respond to questions. She also has no fear of anything, heights, water, traffic, people ect . . .
    She is typically not aggressive however if you just grabbed her to force her she most likely, would begin hitting herself in the face. She is supervised 100% of the time 24/7/365. That said, we do have a real ongoing issue with Elopement (escaping supervision). The house is like Fort Knox, locks on all doors and windows, alarms on all doors and windows. Even with all this, she is very clever and will figure out the combination to the doors or turn off the alarms. Twice she has been returned home by the police this year. The last time she made it 3 miles across town, at 9:30 pm, a busy main St, walked into Sonic and asked for a "Blue rasberry slushy". Even more times in years past.
    Have you had training dealing with persons who have special needs? Do you adjust your "use of force" threshold upon determining the contact has special needs? Who provides your special needs training if anyone?
    I like to think I do what I can. Each year a make and hand out flyers with updated pictures height/weight, her specific sensitivities and our address and contact info. I personally bring them into the Local (City, Sherrif) departments and speak with either the Cheif or Assistant Cheif. The local police know Chloe by name and are very good with her. I also request yearly that uniformed police visit the special needs classroom to help the kids become familiar with the uniform and badge ect.
    That is what I do. I am wondering what you do? The elopement creates enough family stress without thinking of her with her sweet face pressed into the pavement and a knee in her back with ten cops screaming "Stop Resisting!" lights and sirens blaring. My world revolves around her. I would crawl through broken glass on fire for her.

      @officer401  7 років тому +26

      Bryan, this is one of the best questions I've been asked in a while. I wish I had a simple answer for you. If it's obvious that we are dealing with someone with special needs, we do try to take our time and solve the issue, perhaps more than some other calls. We understand there might be a need for a more thorough investigation, or even just a bit more patience. The problem lies in the fact that people try to use mental illness like insanity as an excuse when they really have no other defense, or as an excuse to do whatever they want. It's almost an entitlement. Your daughter won't have her head slammed because she has a disability. But, there's been times I have had to deal with someone that's autistic and violent. In those circumstances, I will do what I need to do to protect myself. Just because someone has a mental illness doesn't mean I am a punching bag. I hope this helps.

    • @bryansage4947
      @bryansage4947 7 років тому +2

      What if any special training have you received? And to be fair I am not on a witch hunt. I understand not only the officers need to protect themselves, but also the teacher ect . . I understand statistically people on the spectrum are likely to show aggressive behaviors.
      I also know there are several effective strategies and training designed for law enforcement (first responders). With the increasing prevalence of Autism. I would expect training (Or knowledge) to benefit everyone potentially involved.
      I also am saying parents should own their responsibility by making potential responders aware, in advance who may need consideration, and making themselves available (by way of contact info) to assist if needed. It is a difficult place for everyone involved. A little training (knowledge) goes a long way.
      Of course, I do not want to see my little girl hurt or injured. Additionally, the potential for her to injure yourself or someone else weighs heavily on my mind. I am not advocating that a person with special needs, that their safety trumps anyone else's. I am only saying, with little effort, and little cost. Some, maybe most of these unfortunate situations can be avoided.

    • @officer401
      @officer401  7 років тому +22

      I totally agree Bryan. I can't speak for all departments, but the two I have worked for have required training on how to deal with mentally ill subjects, and the differences between them. We have not had any tragic incidents in this area, and I think a lot of it has to do with that training.

      My advice to you Having autism myself is get a little backpack or something similar and tell her when she needs time for her self. That she asks for the backpack day bag or what have you and is allowed to go to safe areas like to an area with lots of friendly animals or horses. What she doesn't need is you setting up a gauntlet of challenges to get through. If you want give her responsablities that involve her having access to otherwise restricted areas. P.S. Put in the bag a tracker and a movement generator.

      From my own personal civilian experience, if a dog is running at you, its the same as a man with a knife. Even a kinda small dog like a pitbull (Which are just ugly to me -.-) can still do quite a bit of harm. So if I have to pick between losing a chunk of my leg and potentially more, or you losing your dog, guess what I picked when it actually happened? I bashed that dog over the head with a branch when he came running

    I'm not trying to undermine what officer401 is saying, but using feminine products to treat a GSW is just not recommended. I have a lot of admiration for officer401 and all LEO'S, but this is bad advice. I know he put the disclaimer and everything, but it is recommended to spend the extra money and get the right equipment for the job and have it on standby. Anyone reading this, copy and paste the link into your Web browser and take time to read this article on why using tampons to treat GSW's is advised against.

    Great Video 401!!! Good idea using the feminine Hygiene products for first aid use in helping to control bleeding, We use to carry them in the Ambulance quick response kits when I drove 30 years ago. You may be interested to know to that it isn't the cotton or man made fibers that makes them so absorbent but a compound that is blended in called Sodium polyacrylate that can absorb 500-800 times its own weight. the chemical is also used in children's diapers, Potting soil, and instant snow among other things. I once picked up a semi load of this stuff in raw form and the dock worker at the shipper had me pull my truck out and close the trailer doors with him inside. When I asked why he said that if he could see any daylight thru the trailer that he couldn't load it because if the 45,000 lb load got rained on it could absorb enough water to crush my trailer. I thought about backing down a boat launch to see if I could dry up a lake but keeping my job was more important. LOL!

    Actually most cars now come with pads in the in vehicle first aid kit in the trunk by the spare. They're designed for blood and work well. I remeber one time my cousin got a hook in his hand and used a filet knife to cut it out and used the one from his car to stop the bleeding to get to the ER for stiches. A lot of useful things in your car and most don't know about. Plus I recommend going to a military surplus store especially if you live in snowy areas to pick up a folding shovel, a flashlight, and a wubbie. If you dont know what a wubbie is look it up its the most useful blanket you will ever find.
