The problem that evidence tampering is rarely addressed is terrifying.
There’s a recent case involving a 2019 shooting where the cop was actually convicted, in part because the court basically didn’t buy it when the “evidence” showed indications of tampering.
Agreed. In a lot of states body cams are considered employee records not evidence. Which is bullshit.
How can you prove evidence was destroyed if you have no way of knowing what was recorded? Lack of evidence is not proof of destruction.
I understand the sentiment, but they'd just start destroying their bodycams instead and saying it was the person they arrested that did it since no one can prove what actually happened if there's no evidence. The only change in practice would probably be that it would cost you more tax money with the same (lack of) benefit. People need to be looking for other solutions to hold power accountable.

It’s been around since policing began, but those who don’t want to accept that have to at least accept that it’s been around since the ‘90s. It’s not new. It’s a persistent issue that needs to be addressed better than it has been.

@@Repetoire Even worse: They do a lot of horrible things to those you'd think they'd protect WHILE not having any effect on crime rates whatsoever. It's not hard to find footage of cops abusing children, old people, or immediately shooting unarmed people after issuing a warning. They do it because they WANT to be like this. They think they're gods among men. And when they actually do get caught, the tax payer has to pay for it, NOT them. Anyone who thinks cops are the good guys has clearly not seen them in action. There are no good cops. Those that are "good" either become like the rest, or they quit. It needs to stop.

Brian Klaas, in his recent book "Corruptible," has an interesting chapter on why law enforcement tends to attract pretty bad applicants. He also shows how some jurisdictions, New Zealand in particular, have found success in attracting a more diverse and less dangerous applicant pool. Step one: don't make guns, violence, and crackdowns your leading recruitment pitch.
Step 2: require more training than your average service worker. Which isn't a slight against service workers, more: at no point when I was waiting tables was I allowed to carry as an intrinsic part of my job.
@@Alucard-A-La-Carte - I would add that a comprehensive and exhaustive psychological evaluation be given to each applicant, regardless of cost. Such an evaluation, given by a professional, could weed out a large percentage of people from hate/supremacist groups or individuals with major psychological issues.

@@donmiller2908 The short version is that, in many American jurisdictions, recruiting literature emphasizes military tactics and the opportunity to crack down on "bad guys." It tends to have a manichaean view that divides the world into heros and villains, and encourages applicants to look forward to the chance to bring the hammer down.
Klaas contrasts this to New Zealand, where recruiting literature emphasizes public service and giving to the community. NZ actively seeks to recruit more women and indigenous populations, and works hard to attract a large recruiting pool, so they can screen out anyone trying to join up for self-serving purposes.
These are just the highlights, of course. The book is more detailed, and unpacks the nuances better than I can in a UA-cam comment. Perhaps see if you can find it on interlibrary loan; it's a new release, so if you let your library know you're interested, they may secure a copy.

@@wastedinspiration When my kids were 4 and 6 we were watching TV together, and I was flipping through the channels. They saw elves (from Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers) and wanted to watch that. I was like, "Sure, but we have to start at the beginning," and brought out the DVD of The Fellowship of the Ring. I was thinking that it was pretty chill, and mostly concentrated on character development. It wasn't until Boromir was taking three huge, spear-sized arrows to the chest that I recognized my mistake. As a friend says when he makes similar mistakes, "Well, they are going to have to see a therapist about something someday. Might as well be this!" 😂
I also let them watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off a few years later, having forgotten that they drop the F-bomb about every other sentence in that movie. Whoopsie!

If you find "bad apples" you don't give them a reprimand... you get them out of the bunch! So either they are ignorant, or actually want the entire bunch of police to become racist.
Both the bad apples and the bootstraps idioms, mainstays of conservative talking points, ignore the meaning and context of the original intentions, and to me, that's so perfectly ironic and befitting

Same thing with "meritocracy". The word originated as a satire of elitism & how the ruling class justifies its dynasties by waffling about virtue.
@@iexist1300 regardless of what people are telling you, it's much less common for conservatives to literally bring up bootstraps than it used to be, even though they still believe the underlying concept. If you're on the younger side, it's not surprising if you've never heard it. It's more used as shorthand when critiquing conservatism now.
The "blood is thicker than water" saying can also fall in this category. it also often used by conservatives to guilt abuse victims into forgiving abusive families. It's also used to discredit adoption as a legitimate form of family forming. The full saying is "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb" meaning a family doesn't have to be biological to be a family.
Racists are everywhere. Also in the police force. Believing anything else is stupid. It's more important to be critical of racist police officers than racist postmen because police officers wield a lot of power and are, in some cases, allowed to kill people. Postmen are not. In general, the more power a person holds, the more critical we have to be of them. Love your vids, TJ!

I live in the Twin Cities and I've researched what sort of DEI training they've had. A training that was deemed a huge success by the St. Paul police department was a screening and discussion of Zootopia. A quote from the article reporting on it, "What was cool was so many officers have seen the movie so many times and they never saw the parallels with real life, policing, the internal issues we deal with and the external," Ofc. Colleen Rooney said.
"Because there was not one human character, you could learn from it without being judged or feeling like they were putting it on you," Sgt. Deanna Fink said."
So yeah, that's the level of awareness we're starting with. Sounds about right.

As a white passing Hispanic person, i am very aware of what some white people say when they think they're in white only company. It's.. not good. There's a lot of what one could technically call jokes. And yeah, it's mostly among social conservatives. I was also suddenly a really bad kid to not a good influence once the mom knew i wasn't white.
And guys, i was a quiet nerd. I was almost universally liked by parents
I've heard second-hand stuff that white people will say and it kinda just makes me sad. Im light skin hispanic but not white passing, but I've only recently realized how "othered" I've been all my life.
@@coletrain546 same. It didn't occur to me that the reason that my quiet, respectful ass sometimes got triple the time when I had a much smaller and much milder rapsheet than many of my white counterparts, was probably because I'm latina. It's worse in less diverse counties.
That's pathetic. I'm half black and white passing so have had interesting experiences myself but because of where I live though and perhaps my age (I'm 40 so not super young but not old) I haven't been around many vile white people saying messed up shit. It's definitely happened but it's been less prominent than I would've anticipated. I'm in the Seattle area which is progressive overall and I think that's part of it. My sister was in the midwest for a bit and she said some of the people she was around used the n word casually but it was also a group of friends, so.
I'm an Asian-American with light skin and white folks have said some really racist shit about other people to me, but more often there have been light-skinned POC who would say the same things to me when Black and Brown folks weren't around. I did argue against them but other times I didn't. I had a lot to learn. This was long before I started actually reading and absorbing knowledge about anti-racism through others. At 27 I still feel I have a lot to unlearn.
As a white person whose ears perk up at nearly anything of the sort (and this has been true most of my life - probably because of my "bleeding hear liberal" mother) I can say it was very much NOT common here in various places in NY. Maybe it's said more in the presence of white pass people vs all white people.
Also, NY is a large state, and I was raised in the suburbs of NYC - so perhaps living in the woods of upstate offers something different.

An officers job is to apply the law equally no matter your characteristics. Officers of opposing "races", sexes, immigration backgrounds or political opinion might be biased against YOU. Training against this is DEFINITELY something we thus should require police departments do.
My wife is part of an organization that contributes to training for police on handling mental illness - they take the training and… they sleep through it or just check the boxes and don’t apply the training.
Schizophrenia is basically a death sentence in a police encounter, autism is sometimes just as bad.

@@Justanotherconsumer Holding people accountable to follow up on what they learn during training should be part of the solution too, somehow. Like they do in regular school and college. You don't pass a test later to check your knowledge, you have to take it again or have some other consequence.
My main concern about anti-bias training is more a practical concern over whether it works. Conscious white supremacists would simply say what they need to say to make it through the training, and people with implicit bias would probably roll their eyes, go through the training, and then forget everything they learned.

Everyone always forgets the actual saying. It goes "a few bad apples spoils the bunch". So even if there are only a few bad cops, they've already made policing as a whole rotten.
That "bad apple" aside was genius. XD I had definitely not thought of the full phrase in years.
where I live, even if we were to remove racial bias and other discriminatory factors from local policing, I still feel like their presence would be largely negative. My fathers pistol was stolen and when they tried to pin it on me because I play call of duty. I was surrounded by 3 police cars and held at gunpoint and asked to empty my pockets while walking home at night because someone described as tall with glasses stole something out of an unlocked car. I don't want to live in a world where anyone could lose their life over things. The addition of racial bias and white supremacy only make worse a deeply flawed and outdated concept of crime and those who would commit crimes. I'm not trying to diminish the effects white supremacist's and unconscious racial biases have on law enforcement, but rather express how the enforcement of laws needs to radically shift away from violence and towards not only protecting the peace but doing so in a way that prevents further harm.
I think its insane that you can be openly in a WS group and still be a cop, lawyer or the like. It's like if you could be a pre school teacher while openly going to weekly NMBLA meetings. It's not illegal if your not committing crimes but your presence there is enough for society to instantly remove all your decision making privileges and would happen in an instant in the later situation.

Police institutions and slave patrols have often been one and the same for centuries in North America. The stories of police institutions fighting white supremacy are very few (Metropolitan Police of New Orleans fighting the White League at the battle of Liberty Place is one). Local Sheriffs were essentially labor brokers during Jim Crow- white supremacy had historically given some police institutions tremendous economic power by putting Sheriffs in direct control of the lives of Black americans. So, it's hardly a surprise that these institutions would attract today's Nazis, 'dark enlightenment' russophiles, Klan, three percenters, and trumpers- it's more like a tradition that must be broken.

Modern police was created in 1838 and it was actually in Boston designed to counteract the slave catchers.
It was actually a Republican created forced to fight against the Democrats in the south.
@@thefreestofspeech6951 Police in the north stem from wealthy business owners wanting to protect their property so they hired people to sit and keep an eye on them at night. What did Kyle Rittenhouse, a young white kid, say he was trying to protect? Property. Not lives. And he got acquitted of killing two people. Not much is different. Like the OP said police in the south stem from organized groups trying to catch enslaved people who were trying to get their freedom. Then the 13th amendment came and you can’t have forced labor ‘ *except* as a punishment for a crime’. So as those patrols organized they still went after Black citizens to keep them essentially legally enslaved by putting them in labor camps in jail. Modern policing disproportionately puts people of color in the prison system. Not much is different.

Some of the predecessors to modern police were gangsters who were given official jobs. Going from gangs working for local wealthy people to gangsters nominally recognized as upholding the law, but realistically just doing what they were doing before.

Blake Johnson’s comment made me wonder something;
Kent, are there any right wing UA-camrs that you think are comparable to T1J? I have thought multiple times in the past that I should be exposing myself to more right wing ideas, if for no other reason than to understand their perspective better. But I have not spent much time looking for a source. I just stumbled upon T1J, because UA-cam recommends things it believes you will like.
So yeah, if you feel like making any recommendations for left wingers to check out, I would be open to that. If not, no harm done. Have a good one!
@@gido9467 unfortunately no! Most of the popular right wing channels are extremely bias and over the top in their reporting. They will just make you angry. Rather than try and convince you.
Best channels I can recommend are Lauren Chen, or Blaire White. These are not without flaw mind you. But they aren't in your face "like it or gtfo" channels like Crowder, hodgetwins, or Shapiro.

The fact that there’s people in world see me and people who look like me as less human, without thoughts or feeling either consciously or unconsciously. My life literally doesn’t matter.
The ignorance of a group doesn't determine your validity, and I hope that you not just know but feel deeply that those people are wrong. Things are changing for the better, I believe--people are talking about these issues more now than ever before! Maybe not changing fast enough, but they're changing.

My high school was full of racist kids (and I'm Canadian, BTW). One of them couldn't STFU about how much he wanted to become a cop.
Do cops need to pass a psych evaluation to become cops? That should be a bare minimum requirement. And they should be annual.
Definitely not a complete solution, but that seems like a no-brainer that most people could agree on and could be put in place easily.
They do a psych evaluation, but it is written by racist cops, so it just works to keep POC etc out of the police force (if they're willing to sign up for such a hostile work environment in the 1st place). Every cop who's threatened me passed their evaluation. It's not worth much.

There is a reason as to why large groups such as the KKK have slowly disappeared, just look into your favorite public police department. Again not saying it's everywhere but you can somewhat see it in most of our police departments or criminal justice system.

A good way to tackle police violence is to get rid of qualified immunity (murder minority get out of jail free card). As well as background checks to make sure new hires are not apart of any white supremacist groups. It may not cure the problem but I’d think it’d help. Oh and get rid of the IQ cap, our cops should be educated in criminal law and deescalation over violence.
Technically, QI is no bar to criminal prosecution. But since it seemingly takes public outcry for a DA to bother charging police, you're right that it would be nice to be able to hold the individuals financially responsible for their reckless behavior. And while we're at it, civil asset forfeiture should go away, too.

Recovering alcoholic/addict here, sober 6 years. A half-Asian dude, wearing glasses and business casual gets away with everything. I was involved in tons of mayhem when I was using: scuffles, car accidents, drunk driving, trespassing, property damage, theft, drug possession/dealing etc... I've had several encounters with law enforcement, none resulted in charges.
This is why I will never call the cops for any reason. Nope, not even if someone was trying to kill me. I will run and hide and try to save myself before I call the cops.

Police forces worldwide have the same problem. Not just with racism (which may differ per country, e.g. their where incidents where the Indian police at least did nothing and maybe helped with anti-muslim pogroms), but also with homophobia and misogyny. Therefore I think it's interesting to examine cause and effect.
Does joining the police raise the chance of you becoming a bigot, so more or less the Stanford Prison Experiment hypothesis (but wasn't that experiment debunked?) Or are (sadistic) bigots attracted to the institution of the police, because it gives them power? A third option would be that the percentage of bigots is not different in the police than in the general population, but because of their power, they can do more harm.
Personally I think its somewhere between options two and three, but its an interesting question.
I think to some extent it may also be that it's a very difficult and emotionally taxing job, where you're coming across more terrible people than the average person and your work experiences programs potentially harmful and unfair biases and archetypes of people into your subconscious. In many countries it attracts the wrong people for sure, idk that it does in my country(Sweden) but I think that the perception of law enforcement here is also different depending on what city you live in. Most people I've talked to are supportive of the police force here.
The only people I've met who complain about them were people who were dabbling in crime and people with substance addictions(understandable why they'd not be super psyched about the popo lol, can't blame em), and the complaints were more along the lines of the police butting in where these people believe it's not their business rather than being dangerous or violent. There's obviously going to be misconduct and power abuse happening everywhere, including here, but I don't think we're seeing the systemic problem with police in my country in the same way as certain other countries are. Although this is potentially subject to change since a lot of the right-wing parties here are advocating for a more violent and invasive police prescence in society as a means to curb gangrelated violence and crime in the bigger cities. We'll see what happens I guess.
that question is interesting, about what kind of people would be into a position of power. it reminds me of how narcissistic people are more likely to get directive/senior positions, because the way of reaching their goal includes treading on and using other people, which anyone else would rarely or never consider. it makes it easier to climb the ladder, and sometimes its wrongfully respected to act this way, as if it shows a willingness to handle difficult matters. this should not be a trait applied to these people alone. neither does their calculated beahvior necessarily mean that they are cut out for these positions. in the same way with politics, being good at lying and sweeping problems out of public sight is often more valued than being honest and getting to the point, even though that really should be more preferable, to have transparency in whats going on and whats being done
it would be nice to take a much more sharper look and criticize how people go about reaching their goals, rather than going about that after they reached it, when they are in the position of power to hide it. ambitious people and those seeking power could generally do with being scrutinized more for their actions as well as behavior, and there could also be more chances for those around them to blow the whistle on them if need be. would rather have too many fake reports on someone who does not deserve it, than too many fearing the consequences of calling out on someone who does. if the person in power is honest and mean well, they are in the position to defend themselves, as long as they are aware that this outcome exist. the more important thing is not to let the rotten bunch weasel out of it. but i personally dont know how to put these efforts into practice, so my thoughts on it does not really say much, other than on a philosophical level

I think one of the problems with discussions of racism is that so many people have been trained to think that the only way that racism presents itself is when someone is carving a swastika into their forehead or shouting the N word at people. Racism is often more subtle than that and is expressed in ways that people don't even understand, and it's important to get people to realize this and not think that calling out and explaining the less obvious kinds of racism is basically just calling someone a Nazi.
Yup. Part of the problem is that thinking of racism in a more systemic vs. individual way inevitably leads to people thinking about the role they play within that system, and that's when the defenses go up and people go "but I'm not a racist!" Complicity in a racist system, when you're in a position of privilege, is inevitably racist.
Maybe pass a lynching law thats been in the Senate for 70 years or maybe rename the 6 cities named Lynchburg in the US. Can you imagine being a descendant of Freedmen and living in a Lynchburg? That would infuriate me.

I like the video but I've got some things to say.
I feel like to a large degree the Floyd protests last year weren't (just) about racism in policing but how policing was done in general.
I don't want to live in a society where there are people with more power than me to enact violence regardless of their ethnicity or how supported they are by society.
A more diverse police department will increase their popular support, make it harder to criticise them and essentially put lipstick on a pig.
I agree that making it easier to fire nazis and for police to report colleagues is better.
I don't think your recommendations of increasing diversity training and hiring more diverse police would be as effective as you think for two reasons:
First I don't think diversity training is that effective at changing anything.
Second I think police from other ethnic backgrounds will change the way they police to fit the workplace culture/mindset they enter.
You are 100% correct. There is already evidence of this in the LAPD, NYPD, and NOPD. The thin blue line is the #1 problem in policing. How can the good apples weed out the bad if it's the good ones who are literally putting their lives on the line for reporting misconduct.
Mmm. The evidence is not conclusive, but there is always a trend of minority officers behaving more reasonably and reducing confrontations when they enter the force. It's not by a long shot a solution, but it does demonstrably work.
I see what you're saying, and partly agree, I personally empathize greatly with police abolitionism and think of it as my ideal end goal. I am also a leftist, economically, and would like to see economic hierarchy flattened substantially. I bring this up to create the foundation for an analogy: diversity in police forces may not address the fundamental problems of policing any more than diversity in workplaces addresses the problems of capitalism. What it does seem to do, in both cases, is somewhat ameliorate the externalities of policing and capitalism that specifically relate to race. Also, it is unlikely that an approach to solving these problems that does not include specifically combating racism in our current social structures will likely continue to fail in achieving equity. Both things are good and should be employed as tactics, but neither is a complete answer alone. I hope I've made sense here, just my take on it. Have a good one.
Having cops from the same race as the community they police, will at least put the people in the community slightly more at ease. Minority people feel more oppressed when the power structure is entirely white.

I would personally prefer that the pressure was maintained so that via their and other groups protests and activism society is forced to consider how public safety and justice should be built and sustained.
I'm white and haven't felt targeted by police of a different shade specifically because of my skin colour so I'd understand if someone with a different background felt differently.
But I feel like 2020 seriously mainstreamed ideas like defunding the police and investing those resources into improving social and economic conditions inside poor communities and I can't help but feel
that shifting goals from that objective is a step backwards.
Additionally this is an issue where I think the harms are higher for doing too little rather than too much.

There needs to be a civilian agency that investigates police corruption. Internal affairs is made of other police, it's not good enough.
Police unions need to be removed.
Switching off body cams should be considered a felony offense.
Police precincts need to racially reflect the communities they serve.
Police training should be 2 years minimum.
All police should be required to take courses to identify mental health issues such as stiming, splitting, dissociating etc.
All police, regardless of mental state should have weekly visits with psychologists.
Last but not least, police need a heavily increased budget so they can effectively enforce law. Particularly in bad neighborhoods where they don't venture unless there is a large team of officers.

I'm white and I never doubt that racism is horrific in this country. One thing that really opened my eyes about how bad it really is that when a really racist thing occurs, like straight out of a poorly written anti-racism PSA, my response is shock and horror but Black people's response is more just "ugh, ok." Like that's normal for them! That level of hate is something Black people just deal with and that is a huge indicator for how bad things really are! I spend a lot of time and energy having political opinions but I want to be self critical as well so even calling into question Fox News as well as MSNBC I can look out to my immediate circle and can asses so much from that.

I agree completely with all of the points in this video, and will also anecdotally mention that an ex-cop friend of mine talked about his fellow cops openly chatting in the academy about which departments to join if you became a cop because you wanted to beat up black people with impunity.
Some other food for thought on this: White supremacists as best as I can tell see the situation of black people in semi-military terms. From their point of view, black people existing anywhere near them is a threat, the lynchings and sundown towns and housing discrimination and job discrimination and so forth work contain that threat to particular areas of major cities, and the police forces in those areas act as an occupying army whose job is to prevent the threat of black people from getting strong enough to break out from that with large-enough numbers and weapons that the white supremacists can't attack them with overwhelming force. They think of the ghetto as an open-air prison for all black people who aren't in actual prison, and the main reason the white supremacists don't murder every black person they can get their hands on is that (a) they don't have the numbers or weaponry to succeed at that, and (b) they want to be able to use them as cheap or enslaved labor, or cannon fodder for foreign wars.

Not a native English speaker myself but I'm constantly baffled by the use of race in plural. There are not multiple human races living on earth. It's a weird echo of an ignorant past. There is only one; the human race. Language is important and so are the words we use. Can anybody explain why so many insist on keeping a dated understanding alive?
You’re right, language is very important, and race can be used in different contexts like the human race or a specific race of people. People use the word races to keep groups of people separated by their skin color, rather than united by their humanity.
It’s because certain groups of people want to be superior, experience privilege, and/or create an “other” class to blame their fears and problems on. Humans will use any difference to justify hatred, classism and exclusivity, and if none exist, they will create them. Skin color or race is an easy one because it can’t be hidden. But this mentality would exist even if everyone were white. As we know from history, Hitler promoted the idea that the superior person was blonde with blue eyes, which is ridiculous. That belief still exists to this day. Men treat blond women as if they are the pinnacle of beauty, when they are no more beautiful than African, Hispanic or Asian women.
“Race” in English is not a biological term (typically), it’s a cultural one as it identifies cultural groups.
“White” isn’t really about skin color. The racism experienced by the Irish in the 19th century is an easy example - they might have been “white” but they weren’t part of the privileged cultural group.
Can’t have capitalism with out racism.

The Black Panthers said, "A pig is a pig is a pig" in reference to the idea that a goal should be to get more folks of color in the police force. My assumption is they felt that way because of the whole thing blue like effect, which makes everyone loyal to the badge regardless of race. Additionally, Black and brown cops will still evict a tenant who can't afford rent, will still beat and arrest political protests, and will generally follow orders that are given to them, which often fall in line with the goals of the political and economic elite, not the poor and disenfranchised.
Curious to hear what folks think about that in regards to T1J's suggestion that law enforcement agencies need more diversity.
For starters, more diversity directly improves things were it's tried. The Black Panther's saying is nice and all, but suffers from the same problems most of leftist theory does: abstracting the evils of society into an all-encompasing force of capitalism that always prevails in spite of reforms. But this is just the way the left justifies idealism, and is a thinly-veiled form of essentialism (a pig is a pig, a is a). A truly materialistic and scientific reading would show us which concrete steps are in the right direction (even if no step on its own is 'enough') .
For example, evicting people who can't afford rent is not the cop's fault, but some cities (in Finland I think) can just fix homelessness and provide housing, no need to touch cops. Cops exist to reinforce the existing order of things, that much is obvious, if we improve things, cops by necessity, improve themselves, even when not reformed or abolished directly. These aren't problems inherent to the police at all.
i don't think law enforcement should focus on diversity as a primary goal, but i do think that it's important to have cops working in neighborhoods where they also live. hopefully it's a lot harder to dehumanize someone you might actually bump into in the supermarket when you're off duty. but i could be wildly optimistic on that one...

In my YT comment experience, I've found the most racist comments on mainstream news channels' stories of... pretty much anything, actually. I remember a few years ago there was a story about something to do with Korean trains, and one of the first comments I saw was about how America would be better if only they had enslaved Asians instead of Africans, because 'look how clean the train is compared to the NYC subway system'.
Nazis regularly brigade all of them.
When I was younger I thought about joining law enforcement out of high school but advice from my family and stories from church members who were formal law enforcement convinced me it was more trouble than I was willing to put up with...
Over the last few months with the labor shortage and my local police department trying to reform their image they have been really ramping up their efforts to get locals involved in law enforcement and I've considered doing it as a way to fight police corruption from the inside but the idea of being paired up with some right-wing low key skinhead really keeps me from being willing to try.

None of these facts excuse the problem of racism in American police departments. Yet racial prejudice cannot explain why white Americans are so much more likely to be killed by the police than Europeans of any race. Nor can racism effectively explain why police lethality is greatest in the states with the smallest black populations.8 Solving the problem of violent policing in America requires recognizing these complex dynamics and tailoring solutions that address the political and economic foundations which gave rise to it in the first place. Yet no such approach is apparent in the contemporary calls to abolish, dismantle, or defund the police. In fact, the evidence suggests that “defunding” police departments and cutting the number of officers is among the worst solutions, indeed it may even exacerbate brutality."

Here are the issues with this: it hyper focuses on police killings, when lethal force is just one form of police violence. The very study it cites, from Roland Fryer Jr., notes that in cases of non-lethal use of force, he was still able to find clear racial disparities that could not be explained by the factors he attempted to control for (like income). But this fact is curiously absent from this analysis you've copy pasted, and in the 2nd paragraph this is extrapolated as "lack of racial disparities" even there was absolutely not a lack of disparity.
Additionally, "use of force" is yet again, only one category of police abuse. There are many, many interactions that people can have with the police and the criminal justice system that many not qualify as "use of force" but still provide evidence of racial bias.

I used to like to respond to people who used the “a few bad apples” argument with a question. If we assume they’re right, and it’s just a few bad apples, then why aren’t the good apples kicking them out of their agencies, and publicly disavowing them?
Exactly. like if it was really just a small percentage who are the "bad apples," then why is it so hard to get them fired, reprimanded, or charged when these so called "bad apples" act up or kill someone? Really great point, I'll definitely use that in the future 😉
It's not a few bad apples when all the "good apples" are standing around watching the bad apples brutalize and murder people. And of course with very few exceptions, they never do anything to stop criminal cops when they engage in brutality. You can't be good when you are part of a bad, corrupt, racist system. All of the good apples either quit, are fired or are killed.
I don't want to excuse cops who do nothing - but do understand what might happen to any cop who speaks out instead of reassuring us there are no bad apples or the ones that do exist are not as bad the Floyd killers, OF COURSE.
We top down change to tackle this problem, and there are models from this country (America) and others (such as NZ) to follow.
