- Today we asked the question, Has Hollywood Saved Wrexham?
Let us take a look and find out, but first, Welcome to Wrexham.
Unless you live under a rock, you probably know that Hollywood A Listers, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over the running of Wrexham AFC a few years ago and the Wrexham AFC football team have been doing rather well to say the least.
Wrexham is the largest town, now city, in North Wales, full of Welsh charm and historical treasures, but sadly, Wrexham, like many towns and cities in our now, 'Boarded Up Britain'. the town, sorry, city has seen better days.
In the 1980s, Wrexham was thriving, with shops of all flavours, and streets packed with weekly shoppers. Sadly times have changed, due to out of town retailers, online shopping and the general cost of living and many of the shops and outlets are no longer occupied, making it a bit of a boarded up town, sorry, city.
Despite today's boarded up trend, it actually looks like Wrexham may be rising from the ashes, but is this due to the Hollywood effect of Rob and Ryan and their TV series, Welcome To Wrexham? Chances are it probably is, but that can only be a good thing.
In this Wrexham vlog, we take a look round the town, sorry, city of Wrexham, comparing it to the last few times we've visited, and we take a look at the state of the town, sorry, city and look to see if there have been any improvements in Wrexham since Wrexham AFC, Welcome To Wrexham and Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to the world by storm.
Just in case you don't know, Rob and Ryan's Welcome To Wrexham is an FX / Disney Plus documentary series, following the progress of Wrexham AFC since the two Hollywood stars took over the running of the club.
In this video, we visit many of Wrexham's famous and not so famous land marks, have a look around the Wrexham AFC Shop at the Stok Racecourse ground, head over to the Turf Hotel, we also also drop in to the Wrexham Lager shop and have a chat with a very nice chap.
We also went in search of the now infamous sketch of Rob McElhenney, recently rescued from the wreckage of the Titanic, whilst searching for Wrexham Lager. We found it, and it is now taking pride of place in Wrexham's creative hub, Ty Pawb.
Talking of artwork, we couldn't be in Wrexham without checking out all of the football related artwork that is now all over town. We visited the Welcome To Wrexham house on Crispin Lane, we took a look at the Paul Mullin mural on the side of Wrexham's Fat Boar, as well as visiting the new Phil Parkinson painting on the gate of The Turf Hotel, now one of the most famous pubs in Wales.
Our conclusion was, that Wrexham is on the up again, with new bars, restaurants and independent retailers popping up all the time. Is this due to the popularity of Rob and Ryan's Welcome To Wrexham? It probably is, but who cares. All that matters is that Wrexham is building it'self back up to be the thriving town, sorry, city, it once was.

Postcard & A Pint was thought up by my partner, Rachel & myself, Wills one day while taking our daily 1 hour exercise during the lockdown of 2020. All of a sudden, we were spending more time together, not working 6 or 7 days a week in the arts industry, and binge watching travel programs, and we were actually really enjoying it, and it made us re-evaluate what was important in life for us. Moot point about the wristbands.
They were first advertised as going on sale from The Turf's butty van at 10am.
Then Wayne dropped a clanger and answered a tweet question saying they were going on sale at 8am.
When they arrived to open the butty van there was already a big queue waiting for them and decided to start selling the wristbands then. They were sold out by 7.30am - I found out about this because I had stopped by for breakfast at 7.45am.
Ah Wayne didn't tell us that bit!! We still got to hear the music though and look in and bonus, Wrexham won the last game - but cheeky with that plane though! Cheers for watching 🍻

Yep, with the bypass, most people go around it! But it's a hotspot these days, especially for American visitors!! It feels so strange to us, that with all the beautiful places we have in north wales, Wrexham is not at the top of peoples 'to visit' list! But bring it on! Cheers for watching 🍻

Could Wrexham become the St-Andrews of Wales? Tourism, history & golf, University, charm..... I could see Wrexham being known for the Football club, stadium & the great people...I love the spirit of the town and how everyone has gathered in support of the club while never forgetting their storied past. Go Wrexham!

I was living outside Wrexham when Eagles Meadow was built. Maybe Rob& Ryan may turn the football around around what about the town.ive been left North Wales 8 yrs now and miss it so much.if i hadn't got ill i would still be there.Its now a City which is great.keep going Wrexham
We both remember it being built too. Fingers crossed those businesses do come to those units. You'd be amazed at how many tourists now come to Wrexham! There were loads of Americans here last summer and I suspect many more will visit this summer. It will be interesting to look at the city again this time next year to see what's changed. More people on foot is a great sign for a town. Hopefully Wrexham can leverage the attention they're getting to start more industries, the show can't last forever and at some point the locals will get tired of the tourists. 100%. That’s my concern. I do hope the towns council does more to lure businesses to the area. Not sure why it can’t be done, local university and a skilled work force

Nice to see how success on the football pitch is now translating into grown in the town. It’s obviously not going to happen overnight but the signs are there.
Market and narrow alleyways are the type of places that I love to explore and yes, probably spend too much time in a record shop.

Watched and saw the sad and the good. All those closures must feel disappointing, yet it is a global issue isn't it? Councils need to become more creative and less focussed on retaining the 'old' system. Good to hear about the new impulse into the city- yes, should I find myself back in Wales I'd visit. You're so right. Were really hoping that more footfall on the streets now will entice some retailers back. They are certainly working on smartening the place up, we just hope that shops can come back and make it work. Yep, tourists are coming in for sure. Businesses are coming back, but it's slow. We'd like to think that by this time next year, it's a lot different.

Excellent profile of Wrexham. It's great to see small towns recover some of their former glory regardless of how it is done. As Homer J Simpson so eloquently put it "When will I learn? The answer to life's problems aren't at the bottom of a bottle, they're on TV!"
I know I've already said it but because you mentioned it here, congratulations on 5K. I could say it is freakin' amazin' but it is not. You two have IT. IT being what it takes and not some rare tropical disease. I could see it when you only had 200 subs. I had about 500 and I said, with only a hint of patronisation, that you'd sail past 500 in no time. Now look at you, all grown up. It won't be that long before one of you have to quit your day job to run the UA-cam business. 😍🤩🍻
Ah thanks Shane - to be honest that's the dream! We'll keep plugging away at it (not butt plugging though!). We've been in welcome to Wrexham now so we're feeling proper famous!! Wrexham feels like a work in progress at the moment, but things are changing. It will be interesting to look again in a years time to see if more units are taken in town. Lovely video, I visited Wrexham all the way from Sydney Australia over a year ago to see them play against Farnborough. I liked that Marks and Spencers I bought my lunch from them.

Oswestry, just down the road from Wrexham, has loads of empty commercial properties in the town. But then its a national issue. Amazon and online shopping has really hit the traditional high street hard, as has increased rent to try and cover shortfalls in central government funding.
You're so right. It's happening to all working towns. Were just hoping that with a higher footfall in town, some businesses will deem it worthy to come back! Cheers for watching 🍻

Ooh, harsh haha. Talking about music shops, there are / were a few great music shops in town a few year's back, but my favourite record shop was Phase One records. Even when I moved away from Wrexham, I would still go back just to spend hours in that shop...ah, good times!!!!
