I love my permanent match- they don't dry out as fast as a Zippo because of the seal, they are easy to use, they let you easily get the flame into tight spaces, can accept alternative fields in a pinch and could be used to generate sparks to catch tiner when empty.
I have had one like the rectangle one you have that sat in a small pack for several years and still holds its fuel. Still works.

These gizmos have been around for ages. I've never overfilled one to the point that fuel spills out. They're about as safe as a Zippo, but they seem to seal off better, which is the Zippo's weakest point. And they certainly aren't any more dangerous than a box of strike anywhere matches, or even regular matches. And no, they won't explode even if you put the burning match back into the canister, which a lot of people seem to think will happen. They just extinguish, as there's not enough oxygen in there to burn. The wicks are easily replaced by pulling out the flat steel striker wedged in the "match" with pliers. And when the fuel is exhausted, it's still a usable ferro rod. If you could source some ferro rods, it might be a neat home/school machine shop project to make one for yourself. The ones being sold are often pretty cheaply made plastic containers with a glued on metal cover that makes it look more substantial than it is, and it seems pretty easy to cross thread the match when closing them up.
Good honest review there Andy. It's nice to see the pros and cons laid out for us, although telling us they could be dodgy was fine, setting yourself alight to prove it was going above and beyond. 😉

I can’t even see the wick on mine, but it still works fine. To be safe, place your thumb over the hole while striking. Great piece of kit.
The wick on some is adjustable, you have to pull out the striking end from the match with a pair of pliers which holds the Zippo style wick in place, adjust the length of exposed wick and jam the striker back in, job done.

Well dont let this simp shy you away from them. Theyre basically foolproof unless youre this guy but I'm pretty sure he could F up a wet dream. Even @kentsurvivalgearreview586 says its not the first time hes lit himself on fire lol so consider the source.
They hold fluid forever. Theyre waterproof. And you can dribble some fluid on whatever youre trying to light on fire making it even easier to ignite. Theyre a fantastic survival gear item. Everyone should have one. Well not everyone obviously 🙄 Everyone who doesnt take the short yellow bus that is. If you've ever used a zippo lighter and didnt have a NDE you'll be fine.
They are dangerous but they can be used properly as a emergency back up fire starter for winter camping , thank you for your gear and review video Andy take care.
I had a Zippo and the fuel always evaporated. I then had a permanent match and it was 100% reliable and lasted for ages. So much better than a Zippo.

That flat one is better to handling. If you not over fill, it`s safe to use. Only fuel lighter, which is really waterproof. With it, candle wax soaked cardboard is good fire starter.

It lit up everything because it was over-filled. With a less generous amount of fluid, it works wonderfully. Just keep the fluid off of the rubber gasket, it will eat it away.
I’ve carried a similar “tube style” for about four years now. I’m on my third wick. The little ferro rod is still going strong, although somewhat worn down.
It serves me very well.

I think these are great, theyre cheap and are a nice little piece to add to ur kit. Works great for an improvised candle

Had one for several years. Yes it's more of a novelty. O-ring works if going camping, but survival mode means having it ready to go and that doesn't work. The fluid still evaporates and when needed is empty. The wick can be pulled out a bit with pliers. Also it can be replaced. Pull out the metal bit with a pliers and then insert small cotton strands using the metal striker to push in. It is extremely hard to do, but can be done A quick spark for survival mode is using a welding torch striker. It's very light and portable and paired with char cloth works well
Cool vid, I was forcefully sold one of those in Vietnam but never used it. May have to put it in my back up kit.

the issue ive always had with these is the wicks burning out cos they use cheap wicks, and every time i try to pull the hardened steel insert out to replace the wicks with a decent length of zippo wick, i always end up snapping it either trying to pull the striker insert out, or trying to reinstall it. wasnt a problem back when they were 99p, a little more annoying when theyre over 5 pounds.
though all the ones ive had in the past have had very loosely packed cotton wool inside the fuel flask to get around the issue you're having with them going up in flames when striking them accidentally, if theyre getting rid of the filler, that sounds like they have cut manufacturing costs (but put the price up, seems to be the done thing these days with everything) what would be nice would be if a company made a few design tweaks, and increased the quality. something like a split match that had either a collar or a nut that you could screw up and down to spread it, so you could take the insert out without a hammer and pliers to make changing the wick easier would be a very welcome improvement to them in my opinion.
I have one of these, they are often called the "forever match". I keep mine in one of my fire kits

Wicks on Some metal matches are replaceable,
pull out the tiny striker
& the wicks also pull out & can be trimmed/tuned,
fuzzed-up or replaced-
O-Ring Longevity Tip; Apply a tiny bit of Silicon Oil,
NON-Detergent motor oil, Silicon or Synthetic Grease
& O-Rings will last a good long time,
AND they will also Seal better!
By a Zippo. Mutch more of use. I had the match 40 years ago. Unrilyable and dangerous to work with as you demonstrated. ;-)
Not even usefull as a backup. The O-ring will dry out and the fuel leeks out after a year of storage. When you need it it does't work. Thanks anyway.
I would follow the regular fire starting drill, beginning with a tinder bundle. Lighter fuel doesn't have a good 'sustain' time when poured over wood. (Nevermind WET wood...) So...between fluid needs and wick material, this is a 'semi-permanent' match. This kit looks the 'smart money' in comparison to box matches: sticks break, phosphorous stuff falls off without a spark; high humidity does no good for the team. And the sandpaper strikers (don't get me started about my times with them!)
You can pull out the piece of striking metal in the match and it will reveal a wick the length of the match

🤔🤔these were around back when I was in the army - that was a fair while ago 😯😞. If you were a Zippo lighter kinda' guy then these were no hassle to re-fill & maintain. I recall exactly what you pointed out.... there's no way to advance the wick. That said, when the wick becomes unusable you can cram some cotton in there with a match- or just use the unit like a fire steel & ferro rod 🤔👍
Mine came with extra o rings and wicks. Pull out the metal striker from the end of the wick with needle nose pliers to change the wick.

These were popular in the early 90’s - I had one from ‘Survival Aids’ in bright orange. Always thought they were a bit of a gimmick back in the day.

I ordered one of these months ago, it's finally arrived, well, sort of. What I received was a very similar shaped spray bottle with some acrylic nail something or other in it. It may light I didn't test it

This is very similar to a *prison* lighter. They are made up of a clipper flint and wheel with a wick to smoulder (no naked flame). Prisoners used to (and may still do) make them as they weren't allowed normal flame lighters. You would strike the wheel to get the wick to smoulder, blow it to get enough ember to light a cigarette. When lit you would then pull the wick down to extinguish. The wick was usually attached to something so you could easily pull out to light.
I was given one of these years ago, I had forgotten about it till your review. I do wonder if it could also be used to get a fire going as you do have an ember, I am going to have to find it to see if I can get a fire to go with it.

They both seem potentially really dangerous, with the unsecured reservoirs of fuel right by sparks.

There's a couple ways to mitigate that. Put your finger over the hole when striking, and strike away from hole. And if it ever caught, just drop the striker in and it will snuff it out.
That being said, I've never seen one catch ;)
@@drrossfpv776 Most of the danger probably comes from kids finding them and starting a fire in the house or wherever. Kids are pyros. I used to be one. :)
The fluid is soak into cotton so it won't spill out unless you over saturate it
Not has dangerous as you would initially think. Fire needs a balanced mix between fuel and air to ignite. The inside of the reservoir is oversaturated with fuel so it won't ignite on the inside, it will only burn where it has enough oxigen, wich is at the top. You can just easily blow it out as a candle.
Of course, if you leave it burning long enoug, you'll start to decrease the amount of fuel inside and increasing oxigen wich will eventually cause the fire to get inside, but you have plenty of time to take action before it gets dangerous.
Edit: And always strike the match from the top to the bottom, never the other way around. This wil reduce the chances of igniting the top of the reservoir to almost zero.

You can actually replace the wick, you remove the flat end with flat pliers
Your best to cover the opening with your thumb that way it doesn't go up like a Roman candle lol and unfortunately the seal isn't very good and the fuel evaporates quite quickly

Zippo or similar is the best option.
I can see the appeal as an emergency back-up as they're a lot cheaper than a Maratac Peanut lighter.

I have one and I don't like them for ciggars. The flame won't go out in wind which is good but it moves so much it's darn impossible to light ciggars. Also the flame is too big you fear getting it close to you to light ciggars. Always fear burning your hair and my God if you have mustach it's a nightmare.
how long do the wicks last?
I don't think anyone who's had one of these would argue that, in a few uses, they're more problematic than useful. Mine is a thoughtful gift from a friend. As much as I appreciate it (still), it just isn't practical on camping trips. I have the square style.

I’ve been getting bombarded with adds for these lately. They never actually show you that they run on lighter fuel. I’d probably set fire to my hair or burn my eyebrows off. A refillable lighter seems like a much more sensible option if you’re going to use lighter fuel anyway. Good demo 👍🏼
i think it'd be good in an emergency but as commented before rather a dodgy thing with the fuel just slopping about, but i guess there isn't much in there. i think the square one looked a little safer , maybe if they filled it with the fibre filling in a zippo it would stop the slop

very biased. you obviously made your mind up before they even arrived. I've been using them and varients of them for years now with no issues of lighting the canister on fire etc. the wick and striker can be replaced by grabbing them with needle-nose pliers and pulling them out. why would you pour the lighter fluid out? you light the match and use it when a tinder bundle is questionable or non-existent. its long burn time lets you light fires when conditions aren't perfect. a good piece of kit in the wrong hands
U dont turn it over i was in scouts when we widdled wood and torn fibers and lashing with knife to turn into kindling oddly one dont do in mini teepee around over kindling

Hang on. After 30 seconds the wick nearly burnt out and there's no apparent way to replace them?? So they're 20 seconds (ish) better than one match!?
yeah, I probably took it just over how long I shouldn't have so you maybe get an extra 5 seconds for your risk of hand burning haha, they're not great but some seem to like them.

These are pretty cheesy to be fair but I used to use one when I was a smoker and they actually last a while but when the wick burns it's done but mine lasted a few months of daily usage

That's what happens when you "hydrate" the wick instead of wetting it.
Quite dangerous actually. 👎There's no cap to close off the container so that, as happened to you, you don't catch yourself alight or the container could even explode🤕 😬

Purchased these a few yrs ago. Thought it was a great item. Not! The wicks didn't last long at all. Almost impossible to replace. Not worth the bother for me. Cheap to buy but turns out that is the only attribute. I moved on to the peanut lighters. About same cost. I replaced the "O" ring with a tougher one and the fluid lasts for months. A much better item and it's on my key chain.

Everyone is talking about how it's dangerous, lol...I guess everything is dangerous in most hands.
No it's not meant to be used to pour the fuel out...That would be as smart as breaking your lighter open and using the sparker to make one fire, lol.
The idea is that instead of a box of matches that once lit are useless, and often blow out before they even light, this can be lit until the fuel has been completely evaporated or used, and is still a source of spark to continue making fire's using the ferro rod. A proper test would be just that. How many fires could you get from each in an emergency fire situation, using normal to above average motor skills and common sense.
Simply put, if this thing is dangerous, there is no way you will make it out of a real emergency situation.
So buy some damn lighters already...Just don't bust them open and pour the fuel out, hahaha!

How is a permanent match any different than any lighter that uses lighter fluid? And harder to use also.

You are right with respect to BIC lighters. My metal butane lighters get too hot to hold too fast.
