Great video. I bought a 14" Macbook Pro with the M1 Max chip, and couldn't be happier.
Question for you though - Why not use a cloud option like Dropbox? I do the same as you by only using current photos (by year) on my internal SSD, but if I want the option of looking back, I don't have to carry an external SSD as I simply add that Dropbox folder to my Finder window.
I started doing this years ago and have never looked back

Excellent video! I have a 16" M1 Pro, 16GB and 1TB I purchased upon release and it's been phenomenal. I like the larger trackpad and the bigger screen. My previous laptop was a 17" gaming laptop that was much better and heavier so the 16" seems small and light compared. I'm with you on the RAM, I may should have gone with 32GB on RAM but thus far I haven't ever taxed my laptop. What I did find though was that I purchased the laptop to used hooked up most of the time, as I did with my previous laptop, to my Audio equipment for recording. What I have found over the past 5 months or so it that with the battery life I use it all over the place. I've been building PCs since the 80s primarily used a Mac until the late 90s with more laptops for home and business than I can count... but this is the first I have ever really used as a laptop, unplugged and enjoying it a ton of different activities. Thus I picked up an Studio base model to leave plugged in all the time. I got the smaller drive in that but because I won't take it anywhere I can add an external drive. It has the M1 Max but thus far for most tasks, primarily Logic Pro, I can't really see a difference at all. Thus I'm very pleased I didn't buy the M1 Max for the laptop, the M1 Pro is more than enough for what I'm doing.

What ive learnt..... Get what you can / can afford right now and get creating.. Dnt worry too much about if your laptop will still be enough in 4 years.... In 4 years there will be better devices and you will buy those.... People need to stop advising people to buy top of the range devices for future proofing...

To an extent that’s true, yet on the other hand there are a lot of people like myself who want these for the long haul (had my 2012 last me till 2019). Investing 2 grand now or waiting a couple months and invest 3 grand for something that might suit them better, might be best for some individuals. I never said get too of the range, just to consider the future :)

@@JonnyRoams I just got the new 14" M1 Pro 1TB HDD. It replaced my 2010 15" MBP...These computers last forever, so people shouldn't buy what they need right now, but buy what they think they'll need in a few years. Besides the fact that you can't upgrade these like you could the 2010s (RAM and HDD).

    • @brandondapro

@@JonnyRoams the sad but clear reality is keeping machines for that long isn’t ‘feasible’ anymore, but it’s definitely doable.
Software has moved so fast in the last decade, a 2012 MBP doing any sort of modern workload croaks and moves at an abysmally slow pace.
What makes more sense is to buy what you need in the moment and upgrade earlier than normal so you can cash in on Apple products holding resell value well.
I think the base configuration is far and away the best deal in the new pro lineup, and even though I went a little above it, I don’t think I’d advise anybody to go over 512GB 16GB RAM with m1 pro UNLESS their work absolutely demanded it.

Depending on what you do, they can last up to 10 years. I still see 10 year old laptops upgraded with SSD and 8gb/16gb ram running windows 10 without any problems. 10 years is a good range.

I would be very surprised if in 3-4 years, if you really needed that 32gb, that you wouldn’t already be buying a new laptop. Being a tech guy, I can’t imagine you see yourself keeping this laptop for 5+ years right even with 32gb right? Maybe I’m wrong, but I bet apples computers will be so advanced by then that there would be 100 other reasons for you to upgrade anyway

I purchased the 14" MacBook 10-Core CPU 16-Core GPU 16GB Unified Memory 1TB SSD Storage because of it's portability and power. My expectation for rendering a 10min 1080p video file with Screenflow is that it would be almost instantaneous or take a few seconds however it was only a little faster than my 2015 iMAC which normally takes a few mins. QUESTION How long does it take you to render a 10 min video file, 1080p or 4K with your 14" M 1 MacBook Pro?

    • @JonnyRoams
      @JonnyRoams  2 роки тому +1

For me generally a 10 to 15 minute 4K video, 4:2:2, 10 bit generally takes around 10 minutes maybe? Maybe less, all I know is that it’s probably about 25% faster than my custom-built PC. Also for myself it’s not just the rendering times it’s also the editing process is much more streamlined and efficient.

Its rly hard for me… I will go to Graphics Design Uni in 1 year. I asked them early what specs i need and they said following: Apple MacBook with MacOS is good. 16GB RAM is ok but they say 32GB would be much better. 512GB of RAM is okey but 1TB is better. Also they said M1 Chip. Now the air has no cooling and cant get the 32GB of RAM so i need to get an MBP.
Now the first question is 14“ or 16“… My laptop i have right now is 15.6 and its nice but its rly heavy and big. But i messired everything and the 16“ is smaller in every way and lighter so the 16“ would be an improvement. The screen real estate is nice, i heard the fans just does not rly get loud even when doing hard stuff, the trackpad is so nice and also the battery lasts longer (not a huge point for me).
But the 14“ is just so perfect for working in different places like coffee shop, at home at the couch, in uni and at my workstation it connects to 2-3 monitors.
Now we come to the next problem… which Chip? Ill be doing all the graphics design and coding and cut 4k Videos as a sidehustle… Due to the fact ill maybe be plugging in 3 monitors i cant rly buy the M1 Pro cause its only supporting 2 external Monitors. But im not sure if i will plug in 2 or 3 monitors… The next thing is 24Core M1 Max or 32 Core?
Followed by the question how much RAM? The uni said 32GB would be good. But im a person who likes to work with 5-7 programms open and this could take much of the RAM also i read that plugging in more and more monitors requires a bit more RAM not much but a bit. And if im rendering a video in the background and working on some things in Blender and doing stuff in Illustrator and having safari open and word and a pdf. Is 32GB enough? Idk…
For the SSD ill probably get 2TB due to the fact its not rly upgradeble. I know externals can be used and i will use them but graphics design takes much space i heared. So ill just go save.
If anyone can share their thoughts on all of the above i would be very grateful!

the max write cycle is close to 200TB you can check the spec from the hard-drive provider, that's 200,000 gb, if there is 5gb memory swap a day, for a 512 harddrive will take 100 years to gets to the recommended limit, which the drive could still be good for many times over that limit.
I built a desktop with 2nd gen M.2 samsung SSD 3 or 4 years ago, was worried about the read write cycle, 4 years on I had totally forgotten about it.

I stream MQA from Tidal, using an iPhone 13 Pro and an Apple camera kit. I’m sure I’ll want to use it for more things in the future, but for now I’m looking for a laptop or desktop to stream or purchase lossless music, alone. I want something which will allow me to compare & screw-around with various external DACS, amps & great headphones, like the Stellia, Utopia, etc. I’ll always be seated at a desk, so I don’t need something portable, small, or even lightweight. (My vision is poor, so I can’t read fine print easily).
Is this 14” MacBook Pro the right gadget for me? I don’t want to cheat my headphones, but the most I would be able to spend is $2,000. I did just buy the $2,000 14” MacBook Pro, so I have 1 1/2 weeks to return or exchange it.
👀 also, I’ve been unable to use its USB C ports for external DACS, (streaming Tidal). How would I fix this? (I’m wondering if streaming lossless audio from Apple Music, rather than Tidal, would solve the problem (?)
