You guys are easily some of the best amateur content producers I know of on UA-cam. It amazes me how much great stuff you manage to capture. And I like how you guys aren't so heavy on the editing. I mean we get about an hour and a half of awesome footage with wonderful details and commentary. Not many places you can find that on UA-cam. Thanks guys.

Schuyler Morales Wow, what a wonderful compliment! Thanks so much! We always worry about making videos too long, but I'm thrilled to hear that you enjoy them! Hopefully we can find time to make long videos more often. We also ignore the trend of heavy cutting in the editing on purpose to make things feel more genuine. Glad you are enjoying that as well. -Eric

So happy you both visited Matsumoto and Zenko-Ji Temple as I did in 2013. That Moon Room was so much fun and that was the only castle that I could videotape and take pictures in. The Buddhist temple was where my life changed forever. Nowhere have a ever had an out-of-body experience then at that Temple. The evening sun, bells ringing, monks chanting and the smells of the incense sent me to a whole other world and I am more enlightened and open-minded since. My hostel was a 10 minute walk from that wonderful place so I got used to climbing that hill. Thank you for sharing this I'm helping me relive it, I love you guys your my connection to a higher plain of existence and I'll just live vicariously through you :-)

I was sitting here thinking, why do I recognize the name Matsumoto so much. I've heard it before, but it was ringing some kind of bell and I couldn't place it. Then I realized, The legendary guitar factory "Matsumoku" was in Matsumoto and I own a guitar made there. So that's really cool!
Also, Eric. Did you just hum whilst pouring wine? ;)

Yay long video, I really loved this one ! I felt as I was a guest and you were showing me around. I really got the Japan vibe there. Also, just worth mentioning as a comment to the fire arms thing, that the Portuguese sailors introduced them to Japan around 1500 and they've been using it ever since. Anyway, thanks for sharing the video and the outtakes. :D

hey guys! just watched your video. that was really awesome. saw lots of cool things on there. loved the bear bells and your warnings of not wearing bells up the mountain. yes i can imagine that bear thinking "oh im hungry, i wonder if there is any fast food nearby? as he listens for bells. "yep i hear some bells!! RAWR!". lol. i loved the little hotel you stayed in the first night. was really cool. shame on you. sneaking around. lol. i dont blame you though. i would probaly do it too if i knew no one was around. a lot of the food you had looked really good. i have only tried kabocha pumpkin a few times, but it was in tempura form. really yummy i must say. i thought it was originally a fried carrot, but they said it was kabocha. so the soba kabocha bun looked intriguing. i am not a fan of eggplant. bleagh! never liked it. here in Phoenix AZ. we are the sister city of Himeji. and the castle there is the crane castle. back in 1986. a group of japanese people and representitives came down and helped phoenix build a japanese friendship garden. we have a tea house in the back. they had to use plants from here that would survive the heat of our summers. our garden has a big koi pond, waterfall, bridges. it is really nice. i used to volunteer in it a lot and trim rosemary hedges into the tomomono rounded shapes. and take home some freshly trimmed rosemary to make food with. lol. the shinkasen looks so awesome. would like to ride that one day. really great video you guys made! thanks so much! love from AZ

Saw in one of ur videos that u wanted to come to Sweden, not sure if you just wanted to visit ur friends here or live here but i think Kyde expressed some notion about living here (im a Swede). Looked at quite a few of ur videos today (and subscribed, cause how can you not) and i noticed that food seems quite cheap in Japan! Ud find urself lucky to find a standard lunch here for under 10 Bucks, food out isnt cheap here. In the groceriestore however you can make a "bargain" if want to. I had to watch this video in 3 separate viewings... kept pausing and coming back... haha. That's why it took me forever to finish and like and comment.
I really liked the castle and those ornately boxed meals you got. (And the excitement over those dumplings, the soba and pumpkin and apple and other stuff...) I'm also not mad that we couldn't get footage of you guys crawling through the dark tunnel thing... that's meant to be a personal thing... or at least a fun story... Also the bullet train... I really wish it hadn't been so dark on that ride and you could've gotten some awesome footage of how fast the scenery goes by at that speed on the train... but it was fun to see your cheap little baby-bottle of wine, lol... I would have downed like 3 of those...
At the very end... I think Kyde had a point about the statue, but I also like the hammering gnome guy... so I'm cool with both. Also, Kyde praying for bears was the most epically scary/awesome thing ever. I want to write a short fan-fic about that now.

Hey if the bananas go black just stick 'em in the freezer for banana bread at a later point. They keep well that way, and when they're over-ripe they're perfect for baking.
0:31:32 I always thought that was a little sitting area. I had one of those at my hotel in Osaka and in mine there was a little table and 2 chairs to sit and enjoy the view. It was a view of a love hotel but it was nice to have a little place to write letters and postcards. Yours doesn't have anything, so kinda a bummer.
1:15:14 It's probably Japanese sweet potato which is white fleshed and has a red/purple skin. If you ever hear the Yaki Imo guy come by your place, you should get one of their roasted japanese sweet potatoes. Very nice, and surprisingly filling.

One last thing, I am not a hair dresser, however, my wife has curly Scottish red hair, the reason of my mentioning this is that Kate seems to have a "do it your self hair cut", so as a cheap tip to give a nice hair cut to your wife, get her to wet her hair so they naturally fall down, then use a small 12 inch level starting with the back and some masking tape at the height that she desires to mark where you 're gonna make the cut...Then all you have to do is follow the masking tape around with a pair of scissors and she will have a perfect even hair cut. As it dries it will remain even. Cost $1.99 for a reusable plastic level, $2.99 for a roll of masking tape for 500 hair cut and $5 for a reusable pair of scissors. Thanks again for sharing your adventures with all of us. From Parma Idaho, Thomas T. Hayot

When I went hiking on the Franz Josef glacier in New Zealand they put us into different groups and the slow group they joked was the National Geographic Explorers.
I also did a hike across the Tongariro Crossing in New Zealand. Everyone who came on the bus with me finished before me, so I ended up going back to my hostel on a bus with people that started a couple of hours after I did. Lol.
I'm not very athletic and have flat feet/weak ankles, so I'm always in the "slow bot" group--probably going at a slower rate than Kyde. :D
New Zealand is absolutely gorgeous. I highly recommend it to you guys.

Friend of potato in the ramen. Water-chestnut possibly? in the izu peninsula kyde ate something that she said tasted of soil and didn't have much flavor that im guessing is jicama or 葛芋 (kuzu-imo). Yes, there are persimmons in the states- Diospyros virginiana. I've been eating them from a tree near my house! They're much..much smaller than that, though. Maybe an inch in diameter. Taste sweeter after a frost, but don't need frost to ripen. Local custom says you can cut open a seed longways and look at the germ of the seed to predict the type of winter it will be. If it's a knife, winter will be icy (cut through the ice). If it's a spoon, it will be snowy (shovel to get through snow). If it's a fork, the winter will be mild. Of course, it's only a myth.

Wow! A train that comes every 5-10 min blows my mind! Where I live the BUS, the only public transit in the city!, comes twice every hour during the week and once an hour on weekends and holidays. Some cities are better here (Ontario). In Ottawa they come every 10 min during the week days. My solution? I bought a car. the expense is worth it here. I want to move to Japan so bad.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  10 років тому +1

allyvv89 Haha, the train on the main line in Tokyo comes every TWO minutes during a majority of the day. It's insanity. We had cars when we lived in the states, it's a necessity in most places. To be fair, out in the country it's a necessity in Japan too. -Eric

For that variety of persimmon, it's great eat it while it is crunchy and sweet or when it is ripe and ultra sweet.
BUT don't eat it on an empty stomach and DON'T eat the skin!!! You really don't want gastric persimmon stones in your stomach.
Here are 6 reminders about eating persimmons:

There is a native North American Persimmon but it's extremely astringent. It will sting your mouth when you eat one. You'll find them all over the place on the east coast but most of the time they are too old to be fruiting. I only know because I was researching on growing on at my parents house for them, but the Asian one is normally grafted to an American root, since it is easier to transplant.
