I love watching this when I'm having a really bad pain/disability day. It's just so full of joy and you're both so unashamed to be open about how much fun you're having and it's just the best. Thank you for sharing this little slice of happiness, there need to be more videos like this in the world. I know it was a long time ago but it's one of those things you can watch over and over and it just keeps getting better. And as always, thanks for taking us along
I'm not sure if we ever mentioned this, but Kyde was having a hard time mentally around the time we filmed this, so all the laughter she got was really helpful for her too. Really cool that it's helping other folks too. -E
I'm here watching this video because of your recent Q&A! Now I understand why Eric chose it as his favorite memory/experience/video... Kyde's reaction was priceless.
It's cool to see how people can come together for simple and odd things like this. We grow up with celebrity lust so we think it's okay to freak out over Robert Downey Jr. Seems the same way with these mascots. It'd be a pretty cool event to experience; I'm glad you guys filmed it!
The child like joy when Kyde first realized where you were was amazing. You have earned some serious husband points in the bank for organizing this trip.
The leaves on your sandwich in the earlier portion of the video looked a lot like shiso to me. I greatly enjoy salmon fillet baked with shi so leaves! Very yummy!
Wonderful! You can't put a price on that good of a time. Thanks for sharing. We couldn't help laughing at every turn of the camera. Love seeing you two have that much fun.
Really enjoyed this video! Kyde's initial reaction to the mascots was priceless - so cute! Eric is so sweet to surprise her! Love the video guys, I learned something new, keep it up!
This is so adorable. I loved Kyde's reactions to the mascots. I think that's part of the reason I enjoy your videos so much. You aren't afraid to show genuine emotion. All too often I find that people just seem perpetually unimpressed, like they don't want to show themselves getting caught up in the moment. Plus, I love finding about subcultures I've never really been exposed to. I think it's hilarious that all the mascots have relationships with each other. I wonder if there are any documentaries about the people behind the suits. Thanks so much for sharing!
The one looks like a block is kon-nyaku こんにゃく(konjaku food). And manatee stuff is, it's a kind of puns, MANAtee and driving MANNERs. マナーとマナティ。日本語でちょっと似ている音なのです。
Awesome video, it's funny how all the mascots have business cards. Anyways, now that I'm in Tokyo let me know if you guys will come visit sometime maybe we can hang out and get something to eat. :)
OMG kyde! lol your so pretty. N Eric your a damn legend mate! lol best suprise for Kyde kudos to you mate! hahaha this is in my top 3 of favortie vids from you guys. love yas!! From AUS
Wow, that was totally fun. :-) I wonder is there an English list of the known Japanese mascots? We all obvious know Kumamon, but there's got to be a way to find out more about other mascots....
Yay! Looked like fun. I would've liked to see more of the food, but I totally get that the mascots were the point. Do you guys know if any of the mascots have "official" friendships or rivalries? Like, does anyone come up with stories about them or are they just purely symbolic of where they're from or the companies they represent?
Jacqueline Cook Haha, I'm not sure this would....work in the states. It's so Japanese I can't even begin to imagine it somewhere else. Not sure if we will go next year or not...hrm....-Eric
Great video from the past. On your reading the Kanji: I was told that a Japanese school child has to learn 800 Kanji by the age of 11 and 2000 by 18 if they wish to go to university. I also believe there are a lot more Kanji than that .. so just how many you need to learn to stay working in Japan?
Hi! Melon Kuma is crazy awesome! I just wanted to note, here in Australia also most pencils do not have erasers on them, some do but they are usually terrible quality so if you had one you would likely still buy a seperate eraser :) I personally like scented erasers! I remember in primary(elementary) school we weren't allowed to use pens to write with, only pencils or pacers. Was it similar in the US? :)
I understand that it might be difficult to remember, but was the triceratops Yurukyara from Fukui? Isn't Fukui where all the dinosaurs have been found in Japan and where there is a museum?
So my husband and I are avid followers of yours--I grew up in Tokyo and he is a huge Japanophile so we love watching you and Eric and your shenanigans--it makes me green with envy. :) So when we were watching John Oliver tonight and he did a piece on the mascot craze in Japan I HAD to send the link. If you haven't seen it already, I hope you enjoy. ua-cam.com/video/3T2XQ_kmBuw/v-deo.html Thanks so much for all the hours of entertainment.

+Youa Vang Hahaha, yes! So funny! -Eric
つい最後まで見てしまったよ。
楽しそうで何より。
So cool to see so many of the mascots in one location. The look on Kyde's face when the sumo mascot showed up was a hilarious "WTF am I looking at??"
That is exactly how I felt! - Kyde
笑ってる彼女が最も可愛い(#^.^#)
Great video guys! I don't think I've heard of a mascot summit before, but now I wish that every company and town in the UK had a mascot!
日本をこうやって楽しみながら紹介してくれてるのって凄く嬉しいなぁ^^
時々このお二方の動画見るんやけど日本人が見ても楽しめる動画なんよな。
It's cool to see how people can come together for simple and odd things like this. We grow up with celebrity lust so we think it's okay to freak out over Robert Downey Jr. Seems the same way with these mascots. It'd be a pretty cool event to experience; I'm glad you guys filmed it!

This is pretty much the most amazing thing I've seen all month.
The leaves on your sandwich in the earlier portion of the video looked a lot like shiso to me. I greatly enjoy salmon fillet baked with shi so leaves! Very yummy!
Awwww, I'd love a MelonKuma t-shirt! Eric was wearing it in the thanksgiving vid
+jase276 you can find it on Rakuten website

"Community cuteness". Gotta love that! Thanks for yet another awesome video! :)
This is so adorable. I loved Kyde's reactions to the mascots. I think that's part of the reason I enjoy your videos so much. You aren't afraid to show genuine emotion. Hahahaa
Kyde's reaction was so priceless lol
Maybe I shouldn't have shown this one to my wife. Now she's all, "When's the next one? Let's go!"
+David Cervera Mascots will do that to ladies! -Kyde

Awesome video, it's funny how all the mascots have business cards. Anyways, now that I'm in Tokyo let me know if you guys will come visit sometime maybe we can hang out and get something to eat. :)
I learnt the existence of Kumamon because of this video.
13:28 ..that is Barysan the bird mascort from Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, he won the 2012 Champion. btw lot ppl mistake him as chicken..
chew lu wee Haha, nice. -Eric
If a bear got his head stuck in a melon he'd be pretty cranky, so I totally understand Melonkuma and his desire to eat people.
Hey guys! That zombie bear is a thing called a Gloomy Bear.
This was incredible! That poor bird can never win at rock/paper/scissors lol. Melon Kuma is a Beast!
I also love Kobaton!
Yissssssssss. -Eric
OMG kyde! lol your so pretty. N Eric your a damn legend mate! lol best suprise for Kyde kudos to you mate! hahaha this is in my top 3 of favortie vids from you guys. love yas!! From AUS

Ten years later, have you guys been back? It would be great to see Kyde reunited with her favourites.
haha, we have not! Might be fun to go again though....hrrrm
This video just made my day! You guys are the best :)
"YURU-KYARA"
"YURU" is abbreviation of "YURUI".
"YURUI" means "loose" "untidy" "cheap".
"KYARA" is abbreviation of "character".
HAHAHA I freaing love this video.
Wow, that was totally fun. :-) I wonder is there an English list of the known Japanese mascots? We all obvious know Kumamon, but there's got to be a way to find out more about other mascots....
I don't know if an English one, but this is the website that I've used yurugp.jp/ranking_list.php?kbn=2 -Kyde

Yay! Looked like fun. I would've liked to see more of the food, but I totally get that the mascots were the point. Do you guys know if any of the mascots have "official" friendships or rivalries? Like, does anyone come up with stories about them or are they just purely symbolic of where they're from or the companies they represent?
No idea, but there is this: くまモン、メロン熊に襲われながらのくまモン体操 -Eric
There was a Mascot-athon and Prince Pickles wasn't invited?! :o! I bet he was there just hiding out behind Melon Kuma.
I woul love to have a job like that also am I the only person that heard AKB48's koisuru fortune cookie?
OMG Eric @ 13:05!!! That bear almost ran you over!!!
VRRV Hahaha, dangerous place! -Eric
"I don't think he was as in to that as I was" :-D
This is awesome, one of your best videos for sure! What is the name of the green dude towards the end that Katie was dancing with?
29:14
ちょるる Chyoruru
Melon kuma scared the shit out of me, lo.
Yes!
Awesome, wish I were there!!! Is there Rilakuma?
Haha, we didn't see him there, but I think I've seen him at a mall or something. -Eric
My theory is that mascots could be used to end wars.
byurBUDdy I think you are on to something! -Kyde
Are you guys planning to go next year? I would like to go to something like this. I wish we had something like this in the States.
Jacqueline Cook Haha, I'm not sure this would....work in the states. It's so Japanese I can't even begin to imagine it somewhere else. Not sure if we will go next year or not...hrm....-Eric
Happy :0)
What made y'all want to live in japan compared to America
Just for the heck of it. -Eric
It's a complex question and depends on a lot of factors, such as what job you'd have, etc. -E
melon kuma!
The best kuma! -E
メロン熊怖すぎだろ(>_

Kathleen Gottula I laughed pretty hard during that clip! Thanks for sharing! -Kyde
Lol. If they fall. Can they get up again without help?
Doubtful, that's why they have a support team! -Eric
Do you know when this festival will be and where for 2015? Would love to go!
Melody Spencer It's in Hanyu every year, but I don't think the date is set. Here is their website. gotouchi-chara.jp/hanyu2015 -Eric
Did you guys figure out who the zombie bear was?
The zombie bear is another Hokkaido mascot. So with the Zombie Bear and Melon Kuma, Hokkaido might be where it's at for amazing mascots! haha! -Kyde
