    This is how I throw most of my hooks as well, particularly as an (out) boxer, not an (in) fighter. It took a lot of practice because, as you indicate, they teach the textbook tight hook that really only works for infighting. To be honest, I think it should be the other way around. People injure themselves with tight hooks by throwing them too hard and incorrectly. Even learning the slap hook on the heavy bag can be beneficial to getting on the path to throwing the "half-slap" quickly and correctly. I describe it as using your body to swing a flail. Transfer the energy into it and let the ball at the end of the chain do the damage.

      hahaha “swing a flail” is perfect!!! my fear of saying things is how people misinterpret my words but you said it beautifully

      Discovered this on the bags after years of throwing short pivot hooks. I figured out that if you throw an arm punch WHILE throwing a whole body pivot hook, the speed and power of that one punch is multiplied.
      It made such a difference that I learned quickly what angle and with what knuckles to land in order to prevent a serious hand injury.
      My coach always has to correct my form when he's watching because he doesn't understand what I'm doing
      Just thinks it sloppy technique like "you don't want to break your wrist"
      Lol my wrists will never break or fold from one punch, I only weigh 135lbs

    Muay Thai teaches this to you very early on, and Charles Oliveria used it to knock down Michael Chandler as Chandler was using distance to try and hit, he ended up getting in the pocket and leaned out to a perfect ‘Slap-Hook’.

      Yeah, it totally fits because of how muay thai guys like to hold their hands.

    I really like throwing my hooks like this. In comparison most pros throw their hooks like this especially on the bag but even in-game. Floyd was known for this type of hook and it was snappy! 👍👍

    Its about gauging distance with your punches.
    You make a good point about the hook not reaching your opponent after a straight right hand.
    However, if you are moving forward with your punches, or your opponent is closing the distance, you will catch them with your hook.
    I was taught from a very young age to throw a long rage hook, and then you can shorten it up or lengthen the hook as needed in the ring.
    The biggest issue is that most coaches and so called boxing trainers try to teach beginners how to throw short hooks, but never focus on teaching a long range hooks. So they easily get exposed, when their opponent moves out of range.

    • @expertboxing
      @expertboxing  3 роки тому +1

      It’s tough to teach range on the hook. Some people feel their hooks are too short. Others feel their hooks always go over.

    • @PalacBoxing
      @PalacBoxing 3 роки тому +1

      @@expertboxingI’m a firm believer that there are things someone can teach you. But on the other hand there are things, like gauging distance/range, that have to be developed by your own experience and application of what your taught in the ring.

    Roy Jones Jr was the absolute king of this. Of course it helped that his biceps were twice the size of everyone else so he could still transfer the power even with the unfavourable elbow angle of the half-slap.

      I don’t have Roy Jones biceps but this technique feels mechanically very strong to my body. Try it yourself and see how it works for you.

    This combo is not a problem at all, not at all, why is it a problem? Because often it is taught with a very wrong concept... that you only stay still while doing it. When you jab, cross you actually step in as the other option as you are doing them, and of course well set up... then you land your hook well as the person is covering up. I do not understand why it is a problem unless taught by an inexperienced coach that does not understand the combo. Good video.

    I have to understand what you're doing as sort of whipping with the arm a little.
    Have your ever done a video on RJJs bolo punch?? He is super effective with it. :)

    • @expertboxing
      @expertboxing  3 роки тому +2

      I've never done the bolo punch and don't have much experience with it but I do have some tips as to how it should be done. I wouldn't say it's an effective punch. You can only use it against hurt/distracted opponents. It's a terrible move against an equal opponent or if you're losing the fight.

    • @PhoenixProdLLC
      @PhoenixProdLLC 3 роки тому

      @@expertboxing Then that just makes RJJs effectiveness with it in his prime that much more amazing! :) Thanks for taking my question. 🙋

      @@PhoenixProdLLC RJJ was a rare talent that had the athleticism to break all the rules and still succeed. The majority of boxers who attempt his style learn the hard way that they don't have the speed for it. Trainers throw a fit if a young trainee emulates his techniques.

    As a beginner I didn't really understand the short hook.
    It never felt natural on the bag and my first sparring session with a taller person, I noticed I had a lot of distance to cover.

    So if I understand correctly: are you saying all other tutorials are teaching to not use your arm and just rotate hips? And you are saying to curve your arm out abit before the hook?

      I'm just comparing against conventional left hook technique. And even that has many little variables and nuances between each teacher.

    What if you turned the hand over like a russian hook ? (palm facing outwards)

    • @expertboxing
      @expertboxing  2 роки тому

      I treat Russian hooks more as a “swing” punch and not a hook. It’s better for going OVER your opponents guard whereas hooks are for going AROUND your opponents guard. Try both and see what fits your style better.
