The perfect horror movie. It’s low budget makes it all feel so gritty and real, as behind the scenes pieces confirmed that much of it was: the Texas heat, the sweat, the chainsaw. Many horror movies don’t work for me as they are just not believable, as they are premised on some weird alien, demonic spirit, etc. that just feels silly most of the time. But anyone can understand the fear of picking up the wrong hitchhiker or stumbling into the wrong house. The jump scares are phenomenal, as they come out of nowhere. That sound of that first kill with the sledgehammer is absolutely chilling. And what a final shot.
Give When Evil Lurks a try. A more modern horror movie, technically a possession/exorcism movie, but the evil that happens is locked to what humans are capable of which is what makes it scary.
It really is a masterpiece. It is so traumatic that I remember it being bloody and gory but it isn’t nearly as bloody and gory as Bloodfeast for example but somehow it seems much worse
When asked to name the greatest horror film ever made, I never know if I should choose The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or The Shining. But nothing else comes close. By the way, there's a great analysis of the movie by Rob Ager, pointing out the animal cruelty theme you also picked up on.
