"Nickel Boys is a 2024 American historical drama film based on the 2019 novel The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. It was directed by RaMell Ross, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joslyn Barnes, and stars Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson, alongside Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger, Daveed Diggs, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. The story follows two African American boys, Elwood and Turner, who are sent to an abusive reform school called the Nickel Academy in 1960s Florida. The film is inspired by the historic reform school in Florida called the Dozier School for Boys, which was notorious for abusive treatment of students." - Wikipedia

Suxxed
I imagine those who dislike the movie will have heard Maria Callas in live performances, as fortunately did I in the 1950s and 60s. i've yet to see the movie but rather expect it will miss the target. There are many authentic, live, videos of this unique performer which give a reasonable idea of what she was like. All the modern interpretations of her I have seen, including a weird hologram, have conveyed at most only brief flashes of the fascinating power and sensitivity of that exceptionally vivid artist. But at least "Maria" might keep the name of Maria Callas alive a little longer in the barren world of the electronically over-amplified non-operatic masses. I wonder just how many have any idea that opera singers have to fill 2,500 seat opera houses and 10,000 seat arenas purely with their own un-amplified voices? When I do eventually see it in the UK I'll comment again.
When you can’t help yourself and decide to deadname for no reason but also are incorrect.
The ending of Conclave disrupts the film's disciplined tone. The twist stretches credibility-there’s no way something like that stays secret in the Vatican. Lomeli’s procedural focus on protecting the papacy from scandal makes his acceptance of this twist feel inconsistent and implausible.
Great review. Quality wise I think it’s a B, but I think the message is so misguided and wrong that the movie is an F for me. It makes it seem like the biggest problem with the church is that it’s not inclusive enough & if they allowed more groups to participate then it would be progress. The truth is the problem with the church is it’s a scam; it sells people an imaginary product and scams them out of their time, their money, and abuses millions including kids. Allowing more groups to join into the scam is not a solution at all. That would be like the KKK movie where they elect a black leader, cool but its still the KKK :/
Well, you guys obviously have no idea about the culture and cinema of Turkey and Iran.
I saw it the day it opened. The more I think about it the more I like it. Classy cinematography and art direction. I loved the performances of Craig and Lesley Manville. I don't listen to popular music, so I didn't know that it was anachronistic, so it didn't bother me. I knew as soon as I saw it that I wanted to see it again and I'm sure I will eventually. I'd love to see the original version before the cuts. It's a movie that has haunted me ever since I saw it and I've seen about a dozen movies since then, but I keep coming back to this one.
Good review, although I wish it was more conversational instead of reading it like something scripted.
Cecilia Bartoli is a brilliant opera singer and actress. She is a mezzo rather than soprano but I think she could have done it. As an Italian, she's more similar in visage to Greek Callas. I still wish that they had done more about Callas' early life. Lee Radiwell (sp?), Jackie's sister introduced Jackie to Onassis, which she bitterly regretted.
despite feeling depressed after seeing this one 💀 it was great! loved your thoughts on this. it’s a gorgeous film visually, definitely need to see it again also, new here! have you guys reviewed passages by ira sachs? random thought i had watching this vid, but it’s one of my favorites from last year. completely different! but another gorgeous film revolved around a bleak queer love story 😪
Hi and welcome! We did not review passages but we did talk about it for awhile in our best films of 2023 video
Lee is I feel trying to fall in love with his younger, more put together and organized and drug free self (yes I believe him and Lee are the same person). Lee currently is empty, addicted to heroin, alcohol and meaningless sex, wants to truly fall in love with HIMSELF again. Drew Starkey even looks like him (glasses, hair, eyes, ) and does not even know if himself is queer. Lee is trying to awaken this part of himself that denies his sexuality and be as one (as seen in drug trip). This eventually works as Eugene is never seen again (his younger self), there’s one problem. He spent so long trying to fall in love with himself that he never found a true lover to be with. I found the schwartzman and him dynamic to be quite sad. He is openly queer knows Lee is , flirts with him a lot but Lee never advances . He wasted his years in regret to an old man as he dies on the same bed where they first laid. yes the shooting of the glass on top of eugenes head is callback to burroughs and his wife, but i believe it also represents him choosing his addiction (alcohol as represented as the glass) over his younger true self. i could be wrong but thats the beauty of films like these. Also someone says taking this drug is looking into a mirror AKA looking into YOURSELF that Eugene and him are same person.
The movie is deeply disrespectful. You can’t simply turn an ongoing war-a living nightmare for an entire country-into a musical. To make matters worse, the director didn’t bother to research the lifestyle or context of Mexico. It would be a huge mistake for this film to even receive an Oscar nomination.
I have seen it twice and really fell in love with it the second time around. I loved the Nirvana needle drop really gave the scene a post grunge -punk feel, which for me worked in the context with William S. Burroughs (plus Cobain was a big fan) Daniel Craig gives a master class in acting. I found it sad in the fact that Allerton did not equal up intellectually with William Lee and because of his desperation of wanting to find someone to connect with he's sort of in my opinion settled for Less intellectually though I feel as though allerton's character grew to have very strong feelings for him and he just couldn't handle it whether it was because he wasn't ready to accept his homosexuality or just having more than friendship feelings for another male nevertheless I found this film haunting intriguing and definitely will be watching it again would love to see the uncut version
I believe the music options are a nod to when the novel was published in the late 80s. For me the music and score was a highlight but I can see why it would be divisive.
Interesting takes on the movie. I think it's a bit deeper and there is more continuity than you seemed to perceive. I think this is an excellent movie in so many ways. It is well written, the acting (especially Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey) is superb. The cinematography and music are phenomenal. It definitely represents the lives and the psychology of gay men at two very different stages of self-acceptance in the early '50s. So, why is it so divisive? Why do some love it and some hate it? I think it has to do with a few things. First, there are people who are homophobes and hate queer movies. Not sure why they went (LOL--yes, I am pretty sure, at least). Second, it has a lot of metaphors in it. People's brains tend to be dichotomous as to whether they are linear thinkers and like movies in which everything is spelled out for them OR they are less concrete and more associative thinkers and like the many interpretations of metaphors. Of course, it's really a continuum, but these are the extremes. People at the first extreme (more concrete thinkers) would hate this movie and not understand its true meaning. Those at the other extreme probably would love it. As you say, it's the story of a gay man in middle-age (former military) who lives in Mexico. He's a drug addict, which likely represents the misery he experiences as a gay man in the '50s. He says he's in Mexico because his drug habit would get him imprisoned in the U.S. Remember, though, this was the era of McCarthyism, and his homosexuality also may have gotten him imprisoned--as a "communist"). So, he lives in Mexico and is seeking a meaningful gay relationship. Unfortunately, all he finds is superficial hook-ups. He sees and becomes infatuated with Eugene, a younger man who is struggling with his queer identity and is unable to accept it. Yet, he is drawn to Lee, the older man. This sets the stage for what is to occur. The part that I think really confuses people and is off-putting for them is Chapter 3 with the telepathy augmenting drug in South America. This is the metaphor for the struggle that Eugene is going through, knowing that he is attracted to men, specifically Lee, and denying his own homosexuality. Lee "hears" the thoughts of Eugene during their drug intoxication, "I AM NOT QUEER!" Ultimately, Eugene runs away in an effort to escape his sexuality. And Lee lives on alone, lonely, and grieving over the loss of Eugene, and dies a miserable death. Whie the movie has a hit of romance; it really is a tragedy of two gay men who are at very different stages of their lives and unable to connect in the early '50s. That is my assessment of the movie.
This makes a lot of sense with the "love out of sync" observation that's getting quoted a lot.
Great review. Agreed with your sentiments on the film. It just didn’t quite come together for me in the end, even thought I liked individual aspects (Craig’s performance, the imaginations/dreams, the cinematography, the production design, etc.). Unfortunately, I think Luca is at his best when he sticks to more realist filmmaking, such as Call Me By Your Name, Challengers, and A Bigger Splash. Unlike someone like Lynch, I don’t think Luca has quite figured out how to integrate the surreal into his films in a cohesive way. It’s like he needed the chapter title cards to clearly delineate each increasing step into the dreamworld. I can’t quite put my finger on what didn’t work (except for the horrendous Come As You Are needledrop that completely sucked me out of the film). We don’t really learn much about or feel for Gene (Starkey), but I think that’s the point. Lee (Craig) is a very lonely man who will go to any length to find some deeper connection with people, but ultimately will never succeed. He is a self-loathing, sad person who rightly blames himself for many of his problems. After reading more about William S Burroughs’s life, the film makes much more sense.
All great points as always! Even though I usually discourage autobiographical interpretations, you are right though that knowing the mythos of Burroughs unlocks a lot about the film. I wonder if the film is more an ode to the man rather than its own singular piece of art 🤷♂️
I haven't seen The Brutalist yet. But Anora is my favourite movie of the year. The Substance is a close second.
I wouldn't necessarily say that the first hour drags, it takes you to the highest highs and slaps you face down with reality in the second half. If the things that happened in the first half weren't shown, we wouldn't have been much bothered about Ani's realisation of self-worth and self-love in the end. For me, i felt the first half was fast, to show how easily the concept of a fairy tale romance can sweep u off your feet. The marriage happened after a week. If Sean had shown every little thing that led to Vanya asking Ani out, it would have been more boring. But I'm glad Sean just gave us the bits and pieces of the romance.
I think it was probably an expectation thing. Seeing it with a big crowd with the buzz and it had won the palm D’or, I kept waiting for the movie to hit, if that made sense. And the first hour can feel a bit like prologue. Though it rewatched the film a week or so ago and I found the first hour didn’t drag much at all - blends much better as a rewatch for me.
@moviehusbands True❤️
I love this movie. Ive seen it 3 times already.
It's magnificent. so much yearning packed into it. So much longing. Daniel Craig is unsparing is superb. I prefer this to Challengers by a lot.
Queer is brilliant. I've seen it twice. I love it for what is said and for what is not said. It's a powerful film translation of William S. Burroughs novella.
I watched the movie Maria today.Jolie gave such a powerful performance.I can watch it over and over again.I pray that she wins an Oscar!
Just saw the movie. Angelina Jolie is fine. The film, however, is very problematic. The pacing.... my GOD the pacing... it is moribund. The storytelling is sluggish and only hints at Callas past greatness, making it hard for us to sympathize with La Callas in her current mental state and somewhat pathetic existence.
I just seen the movie, not bad but a lak of emotions.Céline Dion would made a much better version of Maria.😮😮😮😮😮😮
I liked to realy hear Angelina singing. 😮😮😮
Lol.....Celine Dion? You kidding right? No one will watch it!!!
A really thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation about the film--in my view, also much more literate about Larrain's filimic language and what "Maria" accomplishes than most of the mainstream film critics' assessments.
Great review … I was really affected by this little, obscure movie … seven years to make…? 🤯👍🏼❤️
Amazing video!! Perfect Days is one of my favorite movies of all time. I have rewatched it multiple times.
If you know nothing or very little about one of the greatest artists of 20th century you will like Maria the movie. But for myself as an adoring fan and someone who spent days watching, analyzing every move and note and you study singing and love opera and bel canto this is just terrible. I also can not understand why focus on sad last days and not enjoy the life of primadona from the highs to the lows. Just the lows-acting is poor and A. Jolie is not even aprox. Of Callas in any way. The only who could to justice to Madame Callas might be Marly Streep...As this stands this movie is a grand disappointment. 50years after her final recital and this is the best they could do. Shame.
Good comment. Please see mine.
You all like the movie because your are not Mexicans and can't understand how irrespetful it is for Mexico 😮
Good actors but stupid woke end..
I heard the whole movie is just Jollie walking around in opera costumes and expensive designer goods. A fashion show.
The problem is Angelina is playing Callas. Can't stand her and will not see the movie because of it.
Many bots for Angelina
I am a life-long Maria Callas die-hard fan, and this movie was atrocious and Jolie was terribly miscast.
Sadly for you,you can't find a Greek lady to play Maria...or your mum...
terrible
Thanks!
Thank you!! We’ll have a beer on you tonight!
I LOVED, this film, a brilliant ORIGINAL script written for adults and it’s funny as well. This is one of my favorite films of 2024
Thank you.
I am right there with you both that this felt like a disjointed and at times hallow shadow of what could have been. I was never bored, but there was also never anything to really latch onto beyond a serious of feel good issues that are important to give voice to. But none of them are given the time they deserve with the depth required for complex topics. At times it felt like a French guy explaining the horrors of that land way over there, removed in a way that simplified and unextroardinary.
We really enjoyed this recap - looking forward to your 2024 lists.
Once upon a time in anatolia and thin red line always are parallel to me . The hills, the existential convos, how each character gets their own moment in sun…. The tragedy of it all
Great observation. Anatolia is another favorite of mine
OSCAR PERFORMANCE!!!
Thank you what a wonderful review , i appreciated both of you the dedication that Angelina Jolie portraying as Maria Callas , Angelina said she wpuld appreciate the opinions of the operatic community .. thank you for showinvg her acting qualities ❤. Thank you Sir's
AJ is not a good actress - as simple as that.
Jolie is miscast here...she is NOTHING like Maria Callas. Her portrayal has more to do with herself than the real Callas. I don't understand the good reviews. This is the female version of Rami Malek's Bohemian Rhapsody performance. I believe that you know NOTHING about the real Maria Callas.
Thanks for sharing. I can totally see how someone who is very familiar with Maria Callas and her work would have a more critical opinion of the person cast to play her in a film. And you are right, we aren’t connected to the world of Opera and certainly far from being knowledgeable in its most prominent figures including Maria herself. This bias would definitely alter our perceptions of the movie as we are judging it from a different playing field so to speak.
Yes, she's nothing like Callas.
@@danielmieczkowski1443 go and watch Baby girl ...probably trashy movie is more up your alley!!
Of course the reviews are positive. They elevate post modernism over substance.
I get that you're not a Christian, but I don't understand the hate that Christian films get. Sure, they're often cheesy, campy, low-buget, and extremely on-the-nose, but they are also extremely sincere and full of hope (sort of like a Hallmark Christmas movie)--something that many Hollywood films have ditched in favor of "subversive" self-referentialism and pessimistic nihilism. Modern Christian film projects have only improved in recent years, with Sound of Freedom and The Chosen proving that even secular audiences can be attracted by good storytelling and competent filmmaking.
Hi Kent - thanks for this comment. I think this is a good thing to explore. I think mainly a lot of Christian popular entertainment (thinking things like Angel Studios, God’s Not Dead, etc.) seek to confirm an existing point of view instead of searching from within to expand that point of view, like the way that Malick does. I’d say my intention with art is to expand my mind rather than narrow it, so sometimes films with pre-prescribed doctrines can feel hollow to me, and that can be Christian or ideological or political or a variety of other things. I’m not a Christian, but I am an existentialist, and I’m not sure you can ever divorce Christianity (or any religion for that matter) from existentialism, so naturally I end up reading and watching a lot of Christian adjacent work. I love Malick, I love Tarkovsky…I’m reading Confessions of St. Augustine right now as well actually! I apologize if I sounded too dismissive, and I do agree it has improved. Sound of Freedom is certainly competently made. I admittedly have not seen The Chosen though I’ve heard about it. I guess I wish Christian entertainment was more encompassing of philosophical films like Thin Red Line or Tree of Life, or simply more exploratory in their reasonings on screen. Comfort and inspiration is a wonderful thing in art, but it can also sometimes make someone certain of a point of view and closed off to others through that validation. On the flip side, I understand why my religious friends flock to Christian films because the mainstream has effectively marginalized (forgive the wording) them. In a lot of mainstream tv comedies or films, the Christian characters are well-meaning but judgmental, often a caricature or a punchline. That’s not fair either, and that’s not the type of exploratory, empathetic filmmaking I’m inspired by. Sorry for such a long winded answer, but my relationship to art and Christianity and Christianity through art is definitely something I’ve pondered quite a bit. I hope it's helpful in explaining why I'm drawn to some films over others.
Angelina jolie is miscast
The Zone of Interest and Killers of the Flower Moon were my two favorite movies of 2023. This was a fine review--great job.
There are no songs in Opera , only Arias , as critics they should know or research .
Lo-rein !!!! What is that? It is a Basque last-name! It is LA-RRA-ÍN (een)
