  • John Barry wrote the score for the film, 'Frances' in 1982.
The movie is about the life and career of actress, Frances Farmer and starred Jessica Lange in the title role. This is the last track on the soundtrack album. Its full title is 'Home Again: Things Are Going To Be Slow From Now On' and it encorporates the two main themes from the score.

John Barry was a genius of melody and anti-melody! Both have the same weight and go so well to each other..

I'm 54yrs old, I had never even heard of John Barry at that time when I was at school, although he was about. I now listen to JB a lot. Just listening to his Bond film music and some other scores of his. His music somehow brings tears to my eyes and drys my throat. This man is/was an absolute genius. I wish I had taken up music when I was younger. I wish I had known that stuff like this existed. God rest your soul dear JB. I regret not knowing and appreciating you before your death.

I know exactly what you mean, his music has a similar effect on me too. I've served in the Army,on operations and witnessed some very unpleasant things, but have never been moved to tears by them the way Jbs music can . It can be a beautiful yet moving experience listening to him.......

When I was in college, I scored this piece for wind ensemble in my arranging class (as best I could as I had no printed orchestral score to work from). After the band played through my arrangement as part of my final grade, the flute soloist broke down and cried saying, "This is the saddest of music I have ever played." I took her out for drinks afterward and told her about Frances Farmer. I have since learned the movie is not entirely accurate, but the music haunts me to this day. JB = genius!

I have never seen this movie, but this is one of the most beautiful, gentle, romantic pieces I have heard. I have loved it since the 90s when I had Moviola on cassette.

I agree with rkrealtorva. This is a beautiful score throughout. But the last bit of music from when Harry and Frances see each other on the street and continuing over the credits...it just reaches in and grabs your heart. You feel the tragedy of Francis Farmer.
    John Barry = genius.

Appledad3, I agree with you completely. The music underscoring the last scene where Frances offers her hand to Harry (around the 2:08 mark) is some of the most beautiful music inside or outside the movies. The quiet intensity of the strings offering a simple and understated thematic motiff...the unexpected, sudden and supremely controlled crescendo and descrendo of those strings leading to the plaintive yearing of the solo flute bring forth a sense heartbreaking tragedy, remorse & regret.

One of my favorite films and the music was so appropriate, especially the end. I think one of Mozart 's piano sonatas was also played during this film .

I have not watched her documentary yet but I will get to that next. john barry a musical genious and Jessica lange so beautiful with so little makeup. if my sister could she would have me locked up and throw away the keys. frances was just way ahead of her time. she is like us now cussing drinking but always loving her mom. I lost mine in 2013.

One of a handful of film scores that triggers an intense emotional response same as when I first heard it 30 years ago. Un-f&^&*g-believable. [The others being Deer Hunter, Carrie and Requiem for a Dream.]

Superb theme from a film I've not seen since it first appeared back in '82.
At 2 hours 2 minutes it's way too long for me to contemplate watching - in one session anyway.
Lange was nominated for an Oscar for her performance here but lost out to Meryl Streep (for 'Sophie's Choice'). other contenders were Debra Winger, Sissy Spacek and Julie Andrews.
