    I appreciate Ronny's honesty. Sometimes in cooking shows with friends, it can seem like they're going to compliment it no matter what to be nice, so I like this show's openness to cooking criticism 💀 still, I would be crushed

      Malaysian Food is incomparable when eaten in Malaysia. That taste is unforgettable; no one can replicate that. But I do think the host did a real good job of the break-off idea of the food, I am guessing the guest just wished he could have an authentic meal which is quite impossible, assuming that they are trying to make it as extravagant as possible. I can't say I dislike that.

    this proves just how experienced and skilled street vendors and hawkers in malaysia are. steven used all these expensive and good quality ingredients, which by right should've made the dishes amazing, but it didn't turn out right because he didn't have a good grasp on how malaysian dishes are prepared (kudos to him tho! he did the best he could with his knowledge). it honestly makes me appreciate our street vendors even more, and it saddens me that these days, parents will use "you'll end up a street vendor" as a threat to make their kids study. it's a admirable job, and it keeps our culture alive. a lot of our culture is dying out now because the majority of malaysian parents only care about prestige and money. and while those can be important to live a comfortable life, i just wish that hawkers, traditional artisans, and other professionals that do their best to preserve our heritage were respected more for their expertise.

      I think another important fact is that no matter how good quality they are, the ingredients themselves are just not the same. I tried to make my grandmothers stuffed peppers recipe, and I just cant get it right because the peppers in Serbia are completely different then the ones I can buy here in Canada. My mom makes her own sour cabbage and she says thats different too. Even the flour is different and completely changes the taste and texture of bread. Every time I go back to the old country I am shocked because tomatoes have flavor!!!??? Omg the raspberries! The peaches!!! Its impossible to authentically recreate a dish because of that. I assume, like in Serbia, that a lot of the food in Malaysia is grown locally instead of imported?
      But aside from that, I found a YT channel showing Korean street vendors and that led me down a rabbit hole. Im so impressed at how skilled the street vendors are and the food looks so good. I wish we had that here but my city wont even let us have food trucks :(((((

    So I thought about why Steven ‘failed’ this challenge. Him saying ‘people reward effort’, referring to his past episodes/guests, is just unfair to him! Ronny’s challenge was very, very difficult, because there was quite a specific benchmark, and authenticity was at play. That’s VERY hard to pull off. The other episodes had Steven creating new things following somehow more broad categories. There was more room for creativity, and even guests weren’t as particular abt what they wanted, even saying that they never thought they liked the idea of certain combinations until they tasted Steven’s creation. Ronnie had very specific expectations. But this was a great opener for this new season! :) i mean, it can get worse? But also it can definitely get better! Great job, Steven and Ronny! This was entertaining :)) What a comeback.

      very good point. no one else was really looking for him to do an authentic X, were just delighted by his creative twist on the food they asked for. Ronnie was gonna be a harder critic cuz he wanted something authentic. :)

      Because of the lack of creativity and also lack of time that Steven had to create, this was my least favorite episode of dish granted.

      Most of the other dishes also had fairly simple techniques that he could elevate with fancy ingredients. As Ronny pointed out, these weren't dishes you could master with google and a day of cooking (especially since Steven made four things).

      i walked away thinking steven failed this time but thinking about it deeper i think ronny just went into it a hater honestly. and he obviously expected the viewers to be on his side to, wanting to make fun of steven. that's why he kept defending him preemptively. i don't think ronny had an open mind at all, he thought it wasn't going to be authentic (Even though he can't even eat the original dish anyway) and that's all he considered.

      He lacks the necessary support and enthusiasm that he should rightfully have from his so called friends and colleagues! Love is an essential ingredient and I say the cook / drink maker needs that from who he/she's bothering to cook for in order to put it into the recipe! 😜😩😿
      I get that it's a comedic running "bit" (I think) they've got going - perhaps like the animosity between Ryan and The Professor! - but it still makes me sad! 😩

      it bugs me so much when people criticise Steven based on Too Many Spirits, because it’s literally all done for The Bit!!! the whole show is a massive goof, it’s not meant to be serious, and Steven is literally just part of that 🥲 so your comment is right!!! he obviously is very competent, TMS is just him playing the part!!!

      Something I've learned from a chef on yt (don't remember what's his username tho 😭) is that just get into the kitchen and start slow. You don't even need to have all of the ingredients, just start cooking what you have in the fridge.
      That's what helped me get a different perspective on cooking as well.

    Honestly, major props to Steven for this. I’m half Indian and if I had to teach myself recipes and present them to a full Indian, I think I’d just implode from stress before I could even start haha. I can appreciate Ronny’s honesty though, and I hope Steven continues cooking Malaysian food

      My brother is white but his roommate is from India. My brother was making Indian food before he became his roommate but Denny (the roommate) has disciplined and groomed him into being (According to him ) pretty good

    The char kway teow was a failure from the moment it was put into a nonstick pan on a home stove. Similar to other dishes of this type (e.g. cantonese chow fun), it requires a seasoned wok and much higher heat that in a normal stove. It also takes a lot of skill to give the noodles the appropriate char without burning it or breaking it too much. Otherwise, even if you have all the right ingredients and seasoning you end up with lifeless noodles with no smoky taste from the wok.

      Yeah, it might've been a little better if he'd borrowed a cast iron. It wouldn't be the same, obviously, but it's a similar deal - you never wash one with soap, because it holds the flavor from previous dishes cooked and makes everything richer as you keep using it.

      @@rachelclaw you cant cook char kway teow in a cast iron skillet, it will just stick to the skillet and you cant stir fry quickly enough.... you need a proper wok and fast hand motions to cook CKT (the taste hence the unhealtyness of it , its because CKT use a lot of umami soy sauce and thick soy sauce plus you need to be generous with the garlic and chilly sambal)

      @@rachelclaw you are actually supposed to wash your cast iron. thats a complete myth that just makes your dish dirty. just dont use too much soap, otherwise you'll strip the seasoning.

    The thing with almost if not all the other episodes of this series so far, is that Steven was cooking for people who happened to be his close friends and even cooked for his relatives. And the thing that made them all so impressed was not just the effort, but all the personal thought Steven put in to cater to them. Now, maybe they are friends, but they didn't seem as close as let's say him and Simu were. And showing how much you know someone with your cooking is how you cook with ✨love✨ imho. And I think that's one thing that was missing in this episode

    I love singapore and mexico street foods and as someone who’s tried to recreate them state side I know ronnie is right in that this was an impossible task, especially with steven having ONE DAY to master dishes he doesn’t enjoy often!! good effort nonetheless and watching the failure of the edible skewer has inspired me to attempt another go at the vertical pork cooking thing I need for tacos al pastor: wish me luck as I might burn down my garden

      Very true on the mexican food like u can get some damn good mexican food in the states esp in areas w large mexican populations but nothing compares to the real thing and i truly think it comes down to farming practices (at least in more rural parts of mexico idk abt the metropolitan areas) bc the animals arent pumped w a bunch of hormones n the meat isnt processed with a bunch of preservatives n chemicals n it makes it taste so much more fresh n even when it comes to cheeses u can really taste the difference between cheese coming from american farms vs mexican ones n it comes down to their practices

      It's true, at the end of the day even the farming and meat of different countries will taste different. It's like how you can't get Korean beef stateside. Even if you brought over a chef and had them cook the food the way they always would, it'd taste different.

      Helpful hint: have a fire extinguisher nearby. If there's a chance you might set your garden on fire, be prepared. Aim at the base of the fire and move the nozzle back and forth. :) Stay safe.

      One of the things I hated was my dad roasting my mom on how bad everything cooks is but still also eating everything till it was gone :( cause it didn't reflect that he didn't want to waste her food, it just reflected that he was nitpicking it just to have control over her self-esteem. IDK it probably isn't that bad here but after reading this comment, I'm really hesitant to watch the rest of the video in case of war flashbacks

      just cause he said No n that it failed, does not mean its super BAD, it probably just mean it doesn't hold a candle to the OG flavours. i feel like that's the way Malaysians rate their food as well. You would have to get all the tastes n flavours n textures right to pass. Anything missing from the flavour profile and we'll fail u.
      he was still appreciative towards the effort, and he will eat it all. and for the chao keuy teow, he was eating more to try n give it a chance n find some thing to pass on 26:22.

    As a Malaysian you can tell that something is off about all those dishes just by looking. I truly do think it is very hard to make any dish away from their native country especially when ingredients are hard to find. But he got all the components right and introduced a whole bunch of new food to the world. He should be proud of that.

    I think it'd be really fun if Steven just starts practicing cooking Malaysian food regularly and then in a later season he does a redemption episode of making Malaysian street food for Ronny again and hopefully get scores that are higher than 0, 9, or 10 (100 is realistically unachievable but I believe in you, Steven!). And at least he actually got full marks (for taste) for the teh tarik Milo cocktail!

    This was so fun to watch. I had high hopes for Steven, but Ronny’s honesty was very refreshing and funny. Seeing as I’ve never had Malaysian food before and I’m this white girl from Ohio (Midwest ride up!!), I had no idea how complex Malaysian street food is. It was fun learning about their food and how it should be made (via Ronny’s critiques). I can’t wait for the other episodes, especially Eric Nam!! Nam Nation (and Watcher Nation) rise up!!!

      As a Malaysian, we take huge pride in our foods. It’s usually how you put them together (techniques), not the ingredients.
      Malaysia is located between the far-east and west sea routes. It’s a melting pot of diverse races, languages, religions, and cultures. Our foods resemble this diversity. It has a very complex flavor that you can’t explain. That umami is sort of exclusively Malaysian.

    It is really hard to make street food, and swap out anything for it, because it's a food that people have been eating and its taste is already imprinted in their taste buds. Great for the effort but I'm sure Ronny is not a friend that will sugar coated anything to his friends.

    I actuall agree with Ronny's comments. Yes, I feel the sadness that Steven did not make Ronny's dish granted but I understand how it is because Malaysian food is very difficult to make as it is a lot of skills to actually master the dish and it does not take a day to master that dish, it takes a few years to really master that dish. So I understand but good effort Steven for trying to make Malaysian food great again!

    So happy that Dish Granted is back! I love to see what sort of crazy thing Steven cooks up!
    Just a small thing. For something like Char Kway Teow, you need wok hay to make it properly. Similar to any of the Cantonese Chow Hor, the high heat and seasoned wok gives that signature char and smokey taste without the noodles breaking from over cooking.
    You can't actually 100% achieve it on a regular home stove. You need to either heat something really well that would hold the heat for a longer time, like cast iron, or you get one of those fast burners that restaurants use.
    Source: My dad is a Hong Kong trained chef, old style. I ask him about these things.

      Ugh I miss HK food, it's never quite the same here in Canada (I make exception for Vancouver and Toronto.... I'm pretty sure they literally do bring the guy and the wok over in some of the restaurants there LOL). I know in HK a lot of the food is made over open flame... Just curious, what do they do in Chinese restaurants in North America to get that wok hei? Do they just use a gas stove? I wish I could make Chow Hor at home but sadly I know it's impossible with the electric stove, it's just always sad and mushy :(

      @@grammarnazi12 Vancouver and Toronto are two cities that have a fairly high concentration of Hong Kong-Asian population, so yes! Technically, they are flying the guy, AND the wok in to cook those delicious foods!
      For Chinese restaurants in North America, yes, they do use gas stoves. And its normally those fast gas stove burners that I mentioned in my original comment! The ones that gets the flames looking like jet engines, lmao.
      I am literally unable to eat certain foods unless I go back to Hong Kong. I can get the roast stuff here cuz my dad knows how to make them (and also taught me how), so I can get some at least!

    awww it's ok Steven, your effort is definitely appreciated. This is like facing a true Asian parent who loves you but never gonna appraise you directly. As a home cook myself, my friends never say anything bad about my cooking because they don't want to be rude, but I honestly wouldn't mind if someone can be brutally honest with me since I feel that's the only way I can learn and improve.     For an edible stick I automatically thought lemongrass stick! It's not exactly edible but it will add more flavor. Also in Vietnam they grill on sugar cane sticks too!

      in Malaysia, the street vendor would dip the lemongrass stick in oil and kinda of using it as a brush when cooking the satay on top of the charcoal so it adds flavour and fragrance so your idea totally make sense!

      For example, look at your neighborhood, Asian like us- you and I, are known for competitiveness. There is nothing a family have and the guys next door don’t try to have (or be better at).
      Like when an Asian mother hit her child hard with a chopstick, an another would try to hit her own harder with a broomstick.
      So I mean, there is no “supposed “ Indonesian or Malaysian cuisine shit. :)) there is just Southeast Asian cuisine with variations 😂

    My poor Steven. I wanted to give him an alcoholic Milo for every criticism he got. However, I did appreciate in a way the lack of sugar coating to the opinions, but just because it's refreshing at times to get honest, candid feedback. You can't always be 100% perfect (like maaaaany cooking shows try to say), but sometimes, it may taste good but just not authentic. I can appreciate that sentiment.
    Steven handled the feedback like a pro though. I would be dead inside.

My point is that the cook and guest should sit down and enjoy the fruits of all that labor together. I always feel sad that Steven isn't eating too with his friends who he's just done all that cooking for - and delicious food too. And as the guest I would feel lonely and lopsided not eating that food together, especially with the awesome person who just made it for me.

    I really appreciate Steven going for it and Ronny's way of delivering his criticism. It's impressive to just try something like this, and I like that Ronny was honest while still clearly appreciating that Steven did try. I'd love for you and Ronny to go to Malaysia and eat some street food, to show us what we're missing. I actually ordered some roti canai to and chicken satay to eat while watching this.

    This episode was honestly really great! I always thought of how easy it looks to create dishes with intricate process since Steven made it look so easy and the feedback from guests were always positive and amazing. This video featured basic steps with basic ingredients and street food of all things, and in the end it was a bust. The fact is cooking really isnt that easy and I appreciate this episode. As Ronny said, "welcome to the real world"; although painful, it was realistic and brought something new to the table. Awesome video!

    I am a Malaysian living in Malaysia and I honestly think that Ronny was being very genuine the whole time. The thing that westerners fail to realize is that we don't use fancy ingredients to cook our food. I think what Ronny was looking forward to the whole time was more on the authenticity of the food rather than something fancy. Same goes with the Uncle Roger episode. I feel that moving forward on dish granted (especially when there are Asian guests invited) maybe you could focus more on cooking with high quality ingredients rather than expensive ingredients and making something that is more authentic rather than going too out of the box with recipes. It would give Stephen less stress on trying to impress the guests and let him have fun with cooking too. Maybe there can be a pro chef to help and give advice, but also let Stephen be apart of the process as well.
