Dr. Daniels, As a retired plant nutritionist who studied and taught growers how to manage the pH of the soil media I found your discussion highly informed, extremely detailed and very helpful and enlightening! Thank you! I will watch ALL your instructional videos and learn more! I understand your point that there have been no known civilizations that were 100% plant based. No argument. However, it is interesting that the well studied Okinawans of the WWII generation with great longevity were found to be about 95-97% plant based, pretty low calorie and definitely low in protein and fat by most any standards. And most notable is the diet record showed they derived 66% of calories from a root vegetable, sweet potato which fits your thesis perfectly. The Okinawan diet raises a question that I have puzzled about for some time. Given that ocean fish now contain a lot of heavy metals and toxins that were not in the fish or water at the higher present day level is there a good reason to include significant quantities of mackerel, sardines, etc today if we can have a reasonably high level of plant protein and avoid certain risks? Or is there a beneficial effect on a particular microbe from the fish that is key to pH and microbiome balance? DHA is always discussed, but confusing. What about TMAO? I beg your pardon if you have covered this in your other lectures and promise I will watch them all and study the details. Oh, one last question? Could you discuss the effects of green tea on an empty stomach unbuffered. There seems to be some cultural wisdom from India that suggests tea should never be taken on an empty stomach. It does seem to have some dramatic effects downstream in some situations, and no doubt there must be some significant effects on the microbiome even in the distal colon. Big money studies obviously suggest tea effects are positive, but your unbiased observations would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for the great work! There is nothing like it that I have seen in print or online! Congratulations!! Very few in the world that qualify as a true GI Guru, but I have to hand it to you. Dr. Daniels! You have set the standard!
Thank you for your kind words. I hope you enjoy the other videos. I do mention the blue zones (and have been to one myself - it's unofficial). Please see the video on healthy again. As for green tea on an empty stomach, I have no data on that. I did many years ago do a meta-analysis on green tea used in trials for weight loss, which showed no significant reduction in weight, although changes in blood markers. I consume it with every breakfast. TMAO - video will launch next year.
@@TheMicrobiomeExpertI take 400mg of green tea extract (50% egcg) in the morning, because I'm afraid of its caffeine content.. Is it better to take green tea instead?

Great presentation!! What do you think of (pausterized) vinegar to acidify the stomach in a context of hypochlorhydria? Is it ok? Or, while helping in this, it can descompensate the mechanisms that regulate ph in the system?
Hey Guy, What do you think about such concepts of not combining carb foods (rice, oats, potatoes) with protein foods (meats, nuts, legumes) because they require different digestive environments in your stomach (eg, meat needing an acidic and protease concentrated environment, but eating a bunch of starch would ‘bog it down’ with ‘starch paste’). Or the notion to not eat fruit with meals because fruit digests rapidly, but if you eat it with other foods then it has to stay with that food which takes a long(er) time to digest, allowing the fruit to ‘ferment’? Also, what do you think about consuming water around meal timings? Some say it will dilute the stomach acids and to not drink anything within 1 hour before eating or upto 2 hours after eating. Others are more lenient by saying just don’t drink within 30 mins before and an hour after. But others say it’s all hogwash. Do you have opinions on any of these? Thanks from a new subscriber!
You read one of Harvey Diamond's books. I read them many years ago. If there is any truth, it's not very practical. The goal is to get people past their health issues, but not make them neurotic about eating.
@ Thanks, Guy. Actually I came across the concept from my ‘Ayurvedic days’, but I did notice some other people (such as Harvey Diamond) who also espoused such theories. I agree with you that it’s actually not very practical, as I definitely fell into the trap of becoming hyper fixated on trying to rigidly obey those rules, and looking back on it all I don’t think it made any meaningful difference (if anything, just stress). Thanks for your input!
I plan to follow your prebiotic regimen for IBS with constipation. However my pH is on the high end (6.8). Must I make steps to bring the pH to a level where the benificial bacteria will thrive (more toward 5.5) before taking the prebiotics? If so, is there a strategy to reduce the pH in the large intestine?
when I'm talking about pH in this context, it's of the lumen on the colon. I'd be surprised if you know that pH. Either way, the prebiotics are how to get you to where you need to be. The prebiotics ARE the strategy.
That's a longer conversation given individual needs. Let's just say that on average, there is too much animal protein in the average diet, and these new fads of nearly 100% animal food sources is not intelligent. Even the keto diet, which is very helpful in some, when done wrong, relies on too much animal sources.
I unfortunately have developed Gout I am experiencing it has almost stopped being a problem after using the sibo protocol from Gay Daniel’s . but I guess it depends of your root cause
I think your reasons to not be a proponent of vegan diets are faulty. That there has never been a successful vegan society in history says nothing about the possibilities for success in modern society. Also, vegan diets do not have to be low protein, and the unhealthy vegan people you have met might not have been interested in health. Or if they were, they may have had some misconceptions about how to compose a healthy vegan diet. Nowadays we have millions of examples of very healthy long term vegans, and the modern dietary recommendations for vegans make complete logical sense. Or tell me how fish is more healthy than legumes and an algae oil supplement. Or how red meat with animal saturated fat is more healthy than a well rounded whole food vegan diet with a B12 supplement. Or how you are going to keep your ApoB at its natural level under 80 without drugs on any other diet? Only people with genetic abnormalities can do that.

What constitutes a "high-protein-diet", in your opinion?

So additional salt and animal protein leach calcium out of our system?
yes, just balance it with vegetables. I do.

Huge dose of vitamin C. Less salt, less fructose. Keep area above 30 Celsius to prevent precipitation.
