We also know that a properly balanced gut is a bit different in different people, and varies by age, gender, diet, health, etc. We know it's on of the hardest hit of the common gut bacteria in the Western diet - herbicides, pesticides, preservatives, artificials, too little fiber, too much sugar, etc.). It also looks very likely Akkermansia boosting helps stabilize and reverse leaky gut, which is often found in people that have lots of Akker destroying factors which produces both. Of course, changing the CAUSE is the key, but doing pre-biotic, post-biotics, and dead-cell supplementation is likely to help for the first while while rebalancing occurs.

You also need to keep in mind it’s not enough to put some probiotics into your guts, they’re living organisms and need food to eat. Fascinating stuff. My functional med doctor had me do a stool test as I'd been having thyroid issues, gall bladder issues and a Progressive MS diagnosis (no disability as yet though). My akkermansia levels were undetectable and most of my dysbiotic and overgrowth bacteria were elevated.
I should add that I've read a few studies showing that MS patients with higher akkermansia levels had less disability than those with high levels of akkermansia. I'm not adding akkermansia (Pendulum sell it) but am starting a process to improve overall gut health. We'll see on subsequent GI testing if that has an effect on my akkermansia levels.
Honestly I am a doctor myself, also been working in a lab on microbiome studies, and I am struggling with a severe disbiosis that doesn't want to go away. I once did a PCR fecal test to "assess" the microbial community that currently lives in my body and Akkermansia levels were extremely high, something tells me that having a high akkermansia load can also be linked with disbiosis.
Try megaspore by microbiome labs, but start with low dosage if your disbiosis is really bad. This is the only product that worked on me and I’ve taken every probiotic under the sun I’ve been on all sorts of gut supplements and probiotic/prebiotics etc for 20 years. Megaspore just balanced everything out less than a week. Then I ate sashimi fish and felt something went wrong down in the pipes. Had loose stools before and that bloody fish brought me back to the same disbiosis problem. So I did vitamin c flash and megaspore after to rebalance. That seems to be the only thing that works for me personally. But now I know raw fish is what’s causing the issue for me, it must have some bacteria that throws my microbes off.
S boulardii literally fixes my gut in a day when ever I get any gut issues/diarrhea. S boulardii is a yeast based probiotic, since it's a yeast I use it to brew my own probiotic beer/cider.
@@worldupsidedown1 it's when you take vitamin c powder (buffered etc)every like 20 minutes until you have a bowels flash. google for proper procedure. but I wouldn't recommend if you already have bad symptoms, you may feel extremely bloated and then have bad diarrhoea or constipation after. but it apparently flashes all bad stuff out. Don't do it without proper practitioner advice, it may be not the right type of thing for you. I did it under my doctors supervision (had testing done and so on). I also follow doctor peter osborne, he also talks about vitamin c detox flash on his channel if you want to learn more.
I had bad health issues that health care providers said were likely associated with leaky gut. I tried several probiotics with no apparent benefit. I tried akkermansia and my symptoms improved quite a bit. Correlation is of course not causation, but in my case I have decided to continue the akkermansia supplementation, since I seem to feel better when taking it. Along with that, I likely have a MTHFR methylation issue, and malabsorption of some vitamins. I had an injection of vitamin B12 that seemed to help, and I have since been taking a methylcobalamine B12 supplement that also contains intrinsic factor (for improved absorption). I have been also taking benfotiamine and methylfolate, and a B vitamin complex supplement. Also magnesium, zinc, Vitamin D3 & K2, and some others. The overall effect has been very good in my case.
Thanks so much, I had heard about akermansia particularly in relation to T2d which I have had for 20 years or so. Your discussion seems well rounded and has helped me decide how to go forward. I’ve had bowel issues all my life but more so since being on metformin. I have tried various probiotics over the years but I will try the three groups you mention, together for a few months and see how that works. Bryn 😊
Metformin fcked my gut up big-time... 12 years taking it and not one medical person mentioned it completely depletes B1 which is essential for proper digestion. They kept giving anti-acids which made me more sick. Long story short, I had to solve this issue myself and I did. I just purchased some of these probiotic because its worth it to see if it makes difference! (I stopped metformin and sounds like you should to, suggest Berberine, NAC and methylene blue 💙)
@17:04 You should make this part into a short/reel/TT, doc! I wish people saw markers like this as a PROXY for overall health, diet, or behaviors, rather than trying to zoom in and micromanage an individual marker. 👏👏
You're one of the only doctors on UA-cam that I've found who focuses specifically on the microbiome. I'm curious what you think of Dr William Davis and his book Supergut, he talks a bit about Akkermansia in there. Just curious as to your general opinion on the book
You're good. Fix the diet while supplementing. You should be good after that. Disciplined people might be OK with 3 months, but remember, you're taking support, not live microbes. Six months might he good for less disciplined people. It's hard to cut out a lot of the leaky gut producing elements.
I just discovered you today, and as a citizen of the lucky country, Oz, and a Lymie of 20 years and still fighting, we have to be our own doctors as apparently we don't have B,B,B or Ricks. Apart from Dr Marty Ross, you are really good. Now, Akkermansia....I was prescribed this and had gastro like symptoms, and then a month later...the same. Deducted it must have been the Ak. $100AU. Couldn't find any info on- line apart from white coated spruikers in a shiny lab. I guess there are more prescribers on nice overseas hols!
I took akkermansia for three months (I had had a gi test two months prior) and i really didn’t know what it all meant but I saw the akkermansia being so low I thought maybe if I take a supplement so I looked on line (just a month or so ago I realized that it is a new product that was discovered not long ago) anyway I found only one product from pendulum with the name, it is really expensive and it was a challenge to be able to pay for this and pay for the probiotics I had been taken. I took it for about three months and re did the gi test and the numbers did not change a bit. I am having serious health issues and I am just praying that God in His infinite mercy and power heals me.
I had same experience with expensive probiotics and I remembered colon therapists do implants up the bum of probiotics so I emptied my probiotics into an enema bad of water about two cups and laid on my right side to let the probiotics get to the ascending colon ….. all this after a thorough bowel cleansing enema …. Well within 24 hrs my ins and bloating of two years went away! I suggest you try this … can’t hurt
Butyrate is best endogenously synthesised from gut bacteria which in turn requires polyphenols, prebiotic fiber & integrity of gut lining . However, if you must take a supplement , have enteric coated butyrare empty stomach, empty bowels although the therapeutic impact will Not be as powerful as endogenous synthesis by gut bacteria. Polyphenols are essential cofactor for butyrate and they are found mostly in Cherries, all sorts of Berries, Plums, Grapefruit, to a smaller extent in brocolli sprouts etc . Butyrate being SCFA can cross blood brain barrier and stimulate BDNF - nerve cell regeneration.
@Dr Ruscio- you are right on spot. I have leaky gut, DM, A1c at 6.5, idiopathic Gastroparesis and post inf Sibo, (neg now). I tried Akkermanasia for diabetes and for gut biome. After trying 3 mos actually my symptoms got so bad. I had GP flare ups and I was miserable. I called them and gave my feedback. My A1c actually went up. Not sure what happened there. But it was a waste of money. The LPS went up. So I wouldn’t recommend. I feel much better from the probiotics you have recommended here. Just my opinion.
I wish I had come across this video before I started trying Akkermansia Muciniphila. Since I have started on it already, I am going to continue and finish the three month supply and then decide what I would do next.
If my Zoe gut analysis had NO akkremensia and I eat whole foods, mostly plant-based foods, exercise, sleep well, don't have any gut issues. How will Akkremensia grow if not in there already??
I was following this guy daniels from UA-cam and using the protocol he recommends to fix autoimmune and pre diabetes and it involves taking akkramancia and feeding it potatoe starch rice bran and insulin twice a day. And my blood sugar went up and I had terrible flare ups of my arthritis and nerve pain was getting worse after 10 days. I had to stop. And the day I stoped my blood sugar went down. Also the pain everywhere. I am taking the megaspores from microbiom labs Kiran Krishnan. And they are starting to heal my disbiosis.
CNCM I-745 was a powerhouse in getting me through a hard time after antibiotics. Florastor is expensive compared to other cheaper probiotics but I would definitely recommend it.
wow , here i thought by fixing the gut in parkinson ,you could help keep inflamation down in the gut by taking this probiotic? if you have any research reguarding helping the parkinson gut please do a video on that. my wife has advanced pd please try to help. thank you
What foods contain Akkermansia muciniphila? How Can I Boost Akkermansia Levels in My Gut? Unfortunately, there are no foods that contain Akkermansia, so you can't eat Akkermansia. However, to encourage the growth of Akkermansia, you can eat foods rich in polyphenols, including apples, beans, berries, grapes, flaxseed, green tea, nuts, olives, asparagus, onions, oats, etc.
I wish I could take a blend of lacto and bifido you often mentioned. I tried several brands and blends, several times and started with tiny amounts and I always ended not sleeping because of the tummy pain after a few days.
I have read many books, I listened to many UA-cam videos by many of the world's leading gurus and health experts but nothing came close to the hidden herbs by anette ray. I recommend everyone giving it a read.
And the biggest thing none of these manufacturers are telling people up front is that Akkermansia is isolated from HUMAN FECES! IT IS ALSO NEW, having been discovered only in 2014! I'll pass and just focus on high quality, organic produce (lower in oxalates) and the highest quality meat I can afford!
Akkermensia is for a different use case. It is against leaky gut. Increase Akkermensia not by taking a probiotic (with dead bacteria) but by eating polyphenols such as grape seed extract (for at least 1 month) .
I have leaky gut and psoriasis elbows only. I have been taking 400mg of grape seed extract, and green tea extract for over a yr now as well as Trans-Pterostilbene but have yet to see any improvement in my issue. However it could just be me and maybe it will help others. They say everyones different.
My wife took it as a probiotic, it helped her achieve phenomenal results with immunotherapy, the brand she used was Pendulum, they appear to have a patent on the bio-available version.
Dr. Davis is a cardiologist and also has a website where he sells his own products. Red flags right there. I personally follow Justin Sonnenburg. He is a microbiologist and is featured on several youtube videos.
What do you think of vagus nerve stimulation I have read that it plays or has some relationship with the gut too Infact vagus nerve is being looked into for disorders like RA Parkinson’s long Covid Even some say weight loss I read that the glp1 in drugs like ozempic and semaglutide has also got some relationship with vagus nerve
I would watch Dr Kate Lyzenga-Dean video about this. She addresses some of arguments you are listing here…for example stool tests are not necessarily accurate in terms of having enough or too much Akkermansia.
What about determining the health of the gut mucosa, and that low akkermansia may be due to lack of healthy mucosa, and then addressing how to improve that. I don't think adding akkermansia itself would improve the lining of the gut, b/c it won't thrive if there's inadequate mucosa. Low faecalibacterium is another marker of a potential issue w/the gut lining/mucosa I believe.
Have you heard of Dr. William Davis on here, that cured his Sibo making his own super yogurt with L. Gasseri L. Reuteri and Bacillus Coagulans? He said he calls it Sibo yogurt for lack of a better term, but that it's actually good for everyone. Just curious if you know about it. He put a book out called Super Gut.
There are plenty of high quality probiotics supplements on the market. Go to high quality and well educated natural health food stores. Pills are best. Not gummies or low dose liquids
You don't need enteric coated. If you want a personal recommendation i really like the D-Lactate free powder from Custom Probiotics. Its rhe only that calms my system down. I also occasionally do one with acidophilus and l plantarum. Its not a bad idea to try different ones. Make sure you look at other things like pelvic floor dysfunction, histamine intolerance, visceral hypersensitivity, and other sources of IBS.
Hey there. I have a couple of previous videos that cover this so I'll link those here: ua-cam.com/video/CEt0kdT5AOU/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/Ub7QYqIqvCw/v-deo.html Hope that helps!
@@Alexander-rq9he When things can't move, they start to get irritated and that makes it tougher for cleaning movements to happen. It can screw up some nerve stuff too, and some IBS can be linked to nerves not working well.

Just trying to fact check some of your assertions and so far, with regard to a. muciniphila not being the only microbe with it special gut barrier muscosa restorative and regenerative properties, I don't see that the other microbes that do reside within that domain (in the mucin layer) have anything comparable to the qualities of a. muciniphila Yes, other gut microbes reside within the mucin layer of the gut mucosa alongside Akkermansia muciniphila. However, research on microbes that can replicate A. muciniphila's ability to consume old mucin cells and stimulate new mucin production is still ongoing. Here are some examples of gut microbes residing within the mucin layer: Blautia: These are a group of butyrate-producing bacteria that play a role in intestinal homeostasis and inflammation [1]. Faecalibacterium prausnitzii: This bacterium has been shown to reduce gut inflammation and is associated with a healthy gut microbiome [2]. While these microbes contribute to gut health, their functionalities may differ from Akkermansia muciniphila's specific ability to regenerate the mucus layer. Scientists are actively looking for other microbes with similar capabilities to A. muciniphila. Understanding these microbes could lead to the development of probiotics or other treatments to improve gut health and barrier function. Do you have conflicting info regarding this?
In 2022 I randomly discovered that I had 637 IU/mL of Thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb) and 290 IU/ML of Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO). Since then my TgAb has fluctuated to 576 IU/mL and the latest reading is 787 IU/mL. The thing is that I have absolutely no symptoms whatsoever. As a matter of fact, I feel heathier than ever. I have been reading on TgAb and noticed that they are a marker for thyroid cancer. I am so worried. I have booked a thyroid scan but is there anything else I could do to discard the possibility of cancer please?
9:30 The sample sizes are significantly different in the researches. I’m not a medical scientist but I have experience in running tests on websites. Having dozens of visitors would be way too small a sample to draw conclusions. Anything could happen when the sample size grows… 🧐 Intuitively, it doesn’t feel right to juxtapose those clinical trials results. 🤔
Drs / youtubers generalizing health tips for millions of folks with different unique health conditions, microbiome & genetic constitution is always amusing to observe :-)
I have histamine and yeast intolerance. Probiotics kill me. What do you recommend? Any fiber makes matters worse. I did a boulardi and mixed probiotics in high doses before my histamine went crazy.
@OZMAZZ12 Mast cells release histamine when mobilized. You need to regulate your histamine. DAO is critical , DAO depends on copper. Stop having fermented foods or any OTC lactic acid bacteria probiotics.
I started making the SIBO super Reuteri yoghurt and tried a couple of other strains, and ate way too much of it (it was delicious!)….next thing I know is I have a severe skin allergic reaction which appears to have triggered histamine allergies and what looks like mast cell problems. I think it’s interesting that you also did high dose probiotics and triggered a histamine nightmare.
Please can you tell me if you have a video on probiotics. I have had two tests of GI and they show very little of the good strains and take probiotics for a year and a half now. Who can help? No one knows (I mean when I ask doctors they don’t know, they just want to out me on the medication) I don’t want to I’m desperate. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I eat protein carbs and vegetables I make it a point. I was drinking cows kefir that I made and made me have inflammation but I kept drinking it because everyone says it’s the best way to get a healthy gut. Now I stopped and trying to figure out do I keep taking probiotics? I am not trying to micromanage I just want to know what to do. At the end I I’m so confused and sad and depressed. Am I going to be normal as I used to be? I had a very bad case of food poisoning and ever since I’m sick.
Also regarding the other MAAM species seem not to have been shown to have the same mechanisms and capabilities that a. muciniphila demonstrates: The research currently suggests Akkermansia muciniphila might be unique among the other gut microbiota you mentioned which also live within the mucin layer in its combined ability to utilize degraded mucin and stimulate new mucin production. However, the field is still evolving, and other microbes with similar functions might be discovered. Here's a breakdown of the evidence: Mucin utilization: A. muciniphila possesses specific enzymes that break down complex sugars found in mucin (mucinolytic activity) [1]. This ability is less documented in the other gut mucosa-associated microbes you listed. Mucin production stimulation: Studies have shown A. muciniphila can stimulate the production of mucins by intestinal epithelial cells [2]. This combined effect of utilizing old mucin and promoting new mucin production is less documented for other bacteria. However, some nuances exist: Mucin utilization by others: Some gut bacteria like Bacteroides might utilize mucin, but their specific role might differ from A. muciniphila [3]. Mucin layer enhancement by others: Certain gut microbes like Faecalibacterium prausnitzii contribute to gut barrier function, but the mechanism might not directly involve mucin stimulation [4]. Here's the key takeaway: While other microbes play a role in gut health and barrier function, current research suggests A. muciniphila might be unique in its combined ability to: Utilize degraded mucin. Stimulate new mucin production. This combination directly translates to enhanced structural and functional integrity of the mucin layer and potentially reduced gut permeability. Still a lot more researching to be done, but so far, it seems that there is, nonetheless, fairly adequate reason to believe that a. muciniphila is a worthwhile supplement to take - especially in those individuals who may be lacking/deficient in gut microbiota diversity.
It's more of a marketing gimmick , many testimonies of folks having tried these expensive supp & not benefited. If you want to improve integrity of gut lining & intestinal gut barrier func.....try free form amino acids esp EAA's (essential aminos), glutamine, glycine cysteine, vit B6, vit B12, essential trace minerals like zinc & manganese, and soil based probitics esp B.coaglans & B.subtilis... And eat right !..less refined carbs & sugars...., more lean proteins & healthy fats.

Make sure the B12 shots do not have aluminum in it !!!
I’ve started taking a shot of cranberry juice daily along with the probiotics. It is very tart! A shot is all I can handle.
Really appreciate the delicate delivery of this content!

Hi, out of curiosity. What did your diet consist of? I'm trying to see if that's probably why the Akkermansia possibly didn't stay in your gut?
I had same experience with expensive probiotics and I remembered colon therapists do implants up the bum of probiotics so I emptied my probiotics into an enema bad of water about two cups and laid on my right side to let the probiotics get to the ascending colon ….. all this after a thorough bowel cleansing enema …. Well within 24 hrs my ins and bloating of two years went away! I suggest you try this … can’t hurt

I would like to see your thoughts about Butyrate and pre butyrate
Interesting but would be interested if he has financial interest in what he promotes and or doesn't promote
Excellent! A WONDERFUL, CLEAR and easy explanation and presentation! Thank you!
Very valid and tempered approach
I think I'll stick with lacto and bifido probiotics for now. They are well researched and seem to be helping me.
Amazing guy. Gentle and to the truth point.
Thanks a lot.
Hi Dr Ruscio, any timing insights on the the 3 probiotic's, all at once or at different time? Thank you!
All at once for 1-3 months. If constipated up to 3 months then re-evaluate.

I finished that book 2 weeks ago and I can say that is amazing book. Would also recommend it.
that book turned everything around for me

Oh look, fake comments and replies.

What do you think of vagus nerve stimulation I have read that it plays or has some relationship with the gut too
Infact vagus nerve is being looked into for disorders like RA Parkinson’s long Covid
Even some say weight loss I read that the glp1 in drugs like ozempic and semaglutide has also got some relationship with vagus nerve
I feel worse eating fruits and vegetables. Better when I fast.
much of the hype for akkermansia may be just sophisticated marketing attempting to push sales. Just like many supplements targeting gut issues.
Have you heard of Dr. William Davis on here, that cured his Sibo making his own super yogurt with L. Gasseri L. Reuteri and Bacillus Coagulans? Just trying to fact check some of your assertions and so far, with regard to a. muciniphila not being the only microbe with it special gut barrier muscosa restorative and regenerative properties, I don't see that the other microbes that do reside within that domain (in the mucin layer) have anything comparable to the qualities of a. muciniphila
Yes, other gut microbes reside within the mucin layer of the gut mucosa alongside Akkermansia muciniphila. However, research on microbes that can replicate A. muciniphila's ability to consume old mucin cells and stimulate new mucin production is still ongoing.
Here are some examples of gut microbes residing within the mucin layer:
Blautia: These are a group of butyrate-producing bacteria that play a role in intestinal homeostasis and inflammation [1].

Also regarding the other MAAM species seem not to have been shown to have the same mechanisms and capabilities that a. muciniphila demonstrates:
The research currently suggests Akkermansia muciniphila might be unique among the other gut microbiota you mentioned which also live within the mucin layer in its combined ability to utilize degraded mucin and stimulate new mucin production. However, the field is still evolving, and other microbes with similar functions might be discovered.
Here's a breakdown of the evidence:
Mucin utilization: A. muciniphila possesses specific enzymes that break down complex sugars found in mucin (mucinolytic activity) [1].
However, some nuances exist:
Mucin utilization by others: Some gut bacteria like Bacteroides might utilize mucin, but their specific role might differ from A. muciniphila [3].
Mucin layer enhancement by others: Certain gut microbes like Faecalibacterium prausnitzii contribute to gut barrier function, but the mechanism might not directly involve mucin stimulation [4].
Here's the key takeaway:
While other microbes play a role in gut health and barrier function, current research suggests A. muciniphila might be unique in its combined ability to:
Utilize degraded mucin.
