Content is King. Even though Netflix spend billions on content creation annually, the majority of what they produce is mediocre to bad. They dont just need to create shows that millions of people watch, they need content that will penetrate pop culture that will result in massive merchandise sales like Stranger Things has. Its easier said then done but Netflix needs about a 5 or 6 shows in rotation that are on the Game of Thrones and Stranger Things level to restart their growth engine
I speak as an indian, both amazon prime and disney+ (bundled in with a local streaming giant hotstar which already had a monopoly in the region) both cost about 20-30$ per year (10$ per month in the US) Netflix has a cheap mobile only plan for about 3$ but the standard plan costs about 8$ (14$ in the US), now why would anyone pay 24$ for 3 months of netflix when they can have a disney+ subscription for the same amount that gives them more local shows that cater to their interests? Unless they can further reduce the prices to 5$ or lesser I dont see them ever gaining much market share here!
Lol, leave to the corporations already rich to keep people down and below them; Netflix came from nothing back when Disney was already big, and they give them a headstart but there's no fucking way Netflix catch up over there Fuck Disney, what can I say...
The problem with Netflix is probably that they are not doing anything new, and the stock market expects growth but as they are not growing anymore their investors are probably losing interest in the company. What do you think ?
I agree, that's a big reason why I made this video. I think they need to look far into the future, beyond just ads, and build the real next generation of video streaming. AI will be a big piece of that in my view.
@@JohnCooganPlus Yeah that's true, Netflix should think about revolutionizing entertainment. Not to actually get more people on board and just trying to make revenue in the short term. Netflix should try to make the production easier and more effortless.
All power to Rich, but audio is a deep, deep problem. People tend to underestimate how complicated sound is because they can't see it. The primary thing that wasn't addressed here is when you are overlaying new audio onto existing audio, en masse, you are not accounting for background music, spatial sound and fx. It's not a "cut and replace" type procedure, the same way that heart surgery is not just about replacing the heart itself, but connecting the valves back to the body as well. Different languages are cool, but they were created before the entire world could be connected instantaneously. From my perspective, start-ups that progress the rate at which the entire world learns english would be a better use of energy.
Well, I guess depends on the media. If Netflix produced the content themselves, they have access to the project files in whatever editing / production software was used so they quite literally could translate, record/tts, and replace just the audio track. For dialog anyway... of course with any such problem there will be a long tail of exceptions. And even some background sounds will be voices that themselves need to be translated and re-recorded/tts synthesized. I think the problem you're framing of teaching 80% of the world English is a lot harder... assuming they're even willing to, which I don't think they are, and justifiably so.
I agree with him, if you don’t know English, you have no right to complain about your country being poor. English is the language of the global elite. If you don’t know it, you are locked out of the global economy. They need to learn it or become redundant.
the solution is mostly that, Netflix needs to buy some of the other streaming brands, or even the brands merging, the lose of subs is due to the fact that peope are going back to piracy, since the content they want is scattered oove r4 different streaming services.
I think there are a few points missing. The translation sounds good, but going to movies is still a few steps away since a bad or awkward translation could ruin a good movie. Another point worth mentioning is that Amazon is pioneering a tranlation model that doesn't need to go from speech to text and then back to speech, instead they are trying to from speech in one language to speech in another, which may prove important to keep the correct intonation and intent. Finally it will probably always be a bit expensive to do a correct translation in movies since there will always be people doing quality control and retouching the movie to avoid gross errors. The technology will be ready when it is cheaper to pay people to correct the AI work, including the CG on lip sync, than just doing the whole translation. themselves.
Well, so far their only conceptual edges is trying to match speaking time and lip syncing. Otherwise, there are plenty of transcribing software other than the fact that for most movies, transcripts are available before release (i.e. the script). Translation isn't really an obstacle especially for netflix as there are alot of softwares for it and even making people do it is not expensive for them given the value. Something very important they seem to be missing is tones and conveying emotions through speech as what they have done so far could be done using google keyboard microphone and google translate (for translating and reading script) the only thing they have done is the pixelated deepfake. To win over netflix they only have to perfect the deep fake as netflix could afford dubbing or also perfect tonality. And if they were able to voice-fake actors choices it would be an amazing addition. In reality, thier biggest market, for me, seems to be social media as the bar for tonality and perfect translation is lower as well as the bar for accuracy of deep fake in social media people would mostly care that its understandable and smooth(not annoying, not creepy, not very bad quality, and not exact same voice and tone all the time)

I'm not sure why Netflix has different audio and subtitle languages available in different regions. Like, some shows don't have English audio in Spain while the original show is in English. I find that completely stupid. Sounds like a stretch to go this far. But let's see. Thank you for connecting these dots. was not aware before. (:
@@JohnCooganPlus really cool guy/company.. smart investment and I really hope he and you are successful with this project with or without a Netflix investment!!!
Netflix's problem was never their inability to market their content. Their problems stems from producing lackluster content and killing shows that have great potential great too soon and overpricing their packages. It doesn't matter how hard you try to market a product or try to fix prices so that they are lower then those of your competitors, if you have an inferior product to give to the market, you will soon lose your customers, as Netflix continues to lose theirs. Look man, Netflix's packages are far more expensive, one of the most expensive actually. That coupled with boring content, makes a perfect storm for a great company to fall, even if you try to incorporate more languages in the content created, cause it all has to begin with quality content that can both hook new consumers and convince them to stay. They lack quality content, overprice packages and kill good shows, and they are also about to include ads, pff, it has fallen, even if they invest in some deep fake technology.
What I have wanted since forever with Netflix is them having a comment section for each video, but unfortunately, they don't do that. It would also be great if you could network with other users who were commenting on videos. They really should work to add a social component.
Fantastic. You and your AI mate help save Netflix, while the rest of the regular viewers continue to shun trash content and rather spend their money on value.
They could make a separate creator app where new filmmakers can put content up and get it viewed and rated by others. $3 plan to just watch them $5 plan to rate and watch and $25 or even $100 to make content on the app (monthly) so random people won’t spam the app with bad content. The best rated ones would get a budget from Netflix and be put on their main app. This would give new filmmakers a chance to get a budget if they can make good movies and give Netflix a chance to get good content at lower prices. A lot of low budget films could be box office with the right budget. Categorize the content between reviewed and unreviewed (by verified users) and also have categories for 10 minutes 30 minutes and 1 hour +. Verified accounts have to have 3 or more quality uploads. Also have verified directors in each country who oversee which content should get a budget. This way they can globalize and have more local content for their viewers. They also get to see what type of content people want based on the highest rated and viewed content. Similar to UA-cam except the barrier of entry would be $25+. (First comment was deleted for some reason).
This is a good technology, but film is the literal worst possible use case for it. It's good for UA-cam, not Netflix. This is pretty generic low tier AI overhype. Do you own stock in them or something?
i think this is wrong diagnosis, the biggest problem is not the language but content availability.netflix has a very limited content offering outside of USA
I stopped at 33sec to say this. I stopped using Netflix when they alerted me that my show was going away after a given date. I went to Prime. Now, Prime did the same thing to me and I purchased the series on DVD and ditched Prime. Now I have my shows on DVD. I only have a set number of hours to watch shows. This is only my small side of a bigger story. Maybe AI can help? I will start watching the video again, because I have the time to do so. If Netflix paid me, I have an idea how to fix it.
Oh my god! Automatic translation, what a new and brilliant idea. Seriously though, tweaking mouth movements using machine learning is cool, but doesn't make the difference between a dubbed programme being watchable or not. In the whole sphere of translation and localisation of content, syncing lip movements is the very last thing you should be thinking about, it could be the cherry on the cake of a good production, but we've lived without it for 100 years. Before this comes (in order of importance): cultural relevance and interest of content, quality of voice acting, quality of audio recording and editing, the actual translation of the dialogue: managing to retain original meaning while still sounding natural in target language and all that good stuff. Once you can tell me that you've nailed all that, then you can bring out your AI toys to tweak the lipsync.
I think what you are saying has already been done before in a Polish movie called the champions which came out in 2020 bu they had do manual works for sure.
A stock of a company should not be the overall story of a business, I do agree with most of this video but from what I know a stock should not tell an entire story, considering that Netflix just hit a subscriber peak !
From watching Film Theory, I can conclude that they need to work on their marketing in order to gain more revenue and keep viewers happier/more satisfied.
This is just a small step for Netflix. The next huge leap will be content produced by the AI. AI can already produce text, images from text, music, ... there are deep fakes... If you combine these technologies and just think one step ahead, you will see that soon the AI will produce the whole movies we will be watching. Maybe even while we are watching them. And it will optimize itself. You will feed it the best shows in the world and it will come up with shows like those, but only better. Because it will track when you leave the program. And it will afterwards produce better content. The company that will manage to create AI movies with deepfakes will have huge development costs upfront. But then it will have the best movies out there and will get better and better with every viewer. There you have your network effect! If I had a few million dollars, I would create such a company.
Brilliant! When this comes it will open a new door for loads of foreign movies that I don’t like watching bc of bad dub/subtitles. I completed Netflix and need some new content 😅
I'm super curious on how you look for clips for your video! Do you simply look for scenes in your favorite films/shows or do you use some sort of scene index/database?
Also as an Indian, we stream from pirated websites than all of the ott combined.... why go to tens of different places when you can have all at one plce and that too free
I'm curious though: will Blanc's new voices be computer generated? Wouldn't that kill a lot of the acting? Even though text-to-speech gets better and better it's still "flat" compared to great voice acting. Or is simply to animate mouth movements to existing recorded voice acted lines in a different language?
This is an amazing video. Rich could just send it to the head honchos at Netflix and get acquired. Also, I’m so happy you didn’t include an ad in your content- those felt like cheap shots and really lowered the brand
@@JohnCooganPlus it didn’t fit into the narrative, and when you tried to fit it in it felt really forced. And it left an aftertaste: the next day when I tried to remember the best points of the video, all I remembered was your ad for masterworks and that I didn’t enjoy it. Which is good for masterworks but bad for your brand.
To be honest, I prefer to watch movie with subtitles rather than voice over Most of times, it is because the voice over actor were sound more awkward than the original actor voice
I'm so comfortable in my mother tongue tamil if someone makes a perfect translation tool english to tamil or tamil i just get 10times stronger in knowledge because people get more confident when they speak in their mother tongue ! Netflix would have gained subscribers if they didn't cut off service from Russia. They lost 700,000 Russian subscribers while only reporting a 200,000 net subscriber loss for that quarter. They did, however, severely overestimate the number of new subscribers for that quarter in their predictions.
As an engineer and architect in a similar space - your video is a bit misleading. 1. Netflix encouraged password sharing up until now. Saying "it wasn't a problem when DVD's were being shipped through the mail" is disregarding their own strategy and policy into current times. 2. Netflix is shooting themselves in the foot by restricting password sharing because the value-add for most folks isn't there anymore as you have pointed out - there are other alternatives. 3. As other alternatives sprout up, they take their libraries with them at the end of any licensing agreements with Netflix, removing additional value-add. 4. At the same time as they're losing valuable content and cracking down on password sharing, they are also raising prices. Now they're shooting themselves in both feet. These new technologies are cool and awesome but it's going to take a lot more for Netflix to right the ship. Personally, I feel their own in-house content is really poor. Early on, they had great shows the quality showed, now they're pumping out new shows at an unprecedented rate and almost none of it is worth watching (imo). With inflation soaring, wages falling behind, political uncertainty, and more streaming options available at lower prices, folks are pickier than ever about the services they subscribe to. I find better shows on HBO, Disney, even Paramount.
that’s fair, streaming is clearly a hits driven business and it’s not enough to have one Squid Game per year, you need one every month. feels like Disney+ and HBO are definitely closer to having an incredible movie or show drop every month now. good point on password sharing too.
You forget what is important: everybody WANTS to speak English. It's not the greatest language but it's the 'access language' to world currency and to the idea of westernism.
I'm ready to pay for Netflix if I can find there all the shows I'm interested in. I don't have $100/month to pay for all the streaming services in existence
Nice video. Deep faked dialogue is certainly an interesting technological development, but I doubt it would help Netflix's bottom line. It's going to take time for filmmakers to embrace it, if at all, for any indication of fakery or something being "off" is enough to take the viewer out of their story/experience. There's also important cultural context that might get lost. I couldn't imagine watching "Drive My Car" with every actor sounding and looking like an American. :/ Guess we'll see.
In 2022, the total revenue of the video streaming platform Netflix amounted to approximately 31.6 billion U.S. dollars, having grown from 3.6 billion U.S. dollars a decade ago. So yeah you don't seem to understand how successful Netflix actually is.
Because it's too expensive per month, no Netflix Europe, or other parts on earth for people to understand, which means only people, who can understand English can enjoy most of it's content, which is unfair, why would I pay for a service like this.
I don't think this will fix the problem. The problem with dubs isn't that the lips aren't synchronized properly, the main problem is that the meaning gets lost in translation. That's why people flock to subs over dubs and deep faking the lip movements won't fix that. Also part of the problem are just the cultural barriers. There are no cultural equivalents to some jokes or idioms. So, those won't be helped with this tech as well. I think this would be great for like educational material but not for entertainment.
I think Netflix could make some more revenue if they provid an option for viewers to “tip” the shows/movies they really like, so that Netflix could use that money to fund their big hits and customers would feel like they have some control wether a show gets cancelled or not. And maybe even put up to a vote before cancelling the show.

I'm not sure why Netflix has different audio and subtitle languages available in different regions. Like, some shows don't have English audio in Spain while the original show is in English. I find that completely stupid. Sounds like a stretch to go this far. But let's see. Thank you for connecting these dots. was not aware before. (:
700th like! Gr8 content as always
thanks!
Great vid!!!.. I’m curious if John has a sale in this company he is predicting that Netflix will buy.
Yep, I wrote Blanc a small angel check (disclosed in description). Netflix doesn't need to buy the company though, they could just use the technology.
@@JohnCooganPlus really cool guy/company.. smart investment and I really hope he and you are successful with this project with or without a Netflix investment!!!
@@JohnCooganPlus can you get me his email I want to invest as well
I see the genius in your story, thanks for sharing
As soon as they increased their prices earlier this year I cancelled, along with many co-workers.
No, that would make things worse, who wants youtube but with actual shows, grim
@@oo--7714 How exactly? If you don't want to participate in the comments, there's a solution. Don't.
This sounds a lot like a sales pitch video rather than the usual research pieces.
Unfortunately the longer is the content the less the raccomendation algorithm is accurate
Imagine a software like Zoom using this A.I to help translate in real time
Fantastic. You and your AI mate help save Netflix, while the rest of the regular viewers continue to shun trash content and rather spend their money on value.
damn! i had some really similar thoughts. great video, man.
awesome, love to hear that other people are thinking the same thing.
I don't get why the growth stop would affect a company so much. They are still a healthy and lucrative bussiness, right?
This guy still need to provide production-ready level of quality, and that's hard :/
You have the best videos on UA-cam.
hahaha i have zero acting background. probably why i’m overdoing it. what do you mean name dropping though?
@@JohnCooganPlus I hate myself for leaving the comment. I love your videos so much.
Ayooo Lex Fridman lessgo
Quality content John!
Thanks a lot!
This is a good technology, but film is the literal worst possible use case for it. It's good for UA-cam, not Netflix. This is pretty generic low tier AI overhype. Do you own stock in them or something?
Modern AI/ML (since 2015) is truly the closest thing to magic that we have.
Binge streaming kills returning customers and the way how folks talk about series at work.
i think this is wrong diagnosis, the biggest problem is not the language but content availability.netflix has a very limited content offering outside of USA
All netflix needs to stop releasing whole series in one day.. Its a straight up pain to watch a whole series in 8-9 hrs straight
so inspiring and epic!
Once you can tell me that you've nailed all that, then you can bring out your AI toys to tweak the lipsync.
imagine Amazon buying Netflix
hey john thank you for all your wonderfful videos love them all! :)
thanks for the nice comment! very encouraging to hear!
I personally thing Netflix will make a comeback.. (Haven't watched the video yet)
Once the language barrier is broken mankind will become interplanetary almost instantly
If I had a few million dollars, I would create such a company.
i liked the edit
Brilliant! When this comes it will open a new door for loads of foreign movies that I don’t like watching bc of bad dub/subtitles. I completed Netflix and need some new content 😅
That guy's a king for weating a d3vur temple os hat
Funny how one of the main reasons Netflix is nose diving content creators like John Coogan go around without mention it. Go Woke Go Broke!!!
I'm super curious on how you look for clips for your video! Do you simply look for scenes in your favorite films/shows or do you use some sort of scene index/database?
For those who have seen Alexandr Wang somewhere before 😏
They are making the Star Trek universal translator.
I am little disappointed that Half of content is not directly about Netflix as the title but ad for someone and his company.
This is an amazing video. Rich could just send it to the head honchos at Netflix and get acquired. Also, I’m so happy you didn’t include an ad in your content- those felt like cheap shots and really lowered the brand
You right bro
Glad you enjoyed it! What do you mean cheap shots?
@@JohnCooganPlus it didn’t fit into the narrative, and when you tried to fit it in it felt really forced.
And it left an aftertaste: the next day when I tried to remember the best points of the video, all I remembered was your ad for masterworks and that I didn’t enjoy it. Which is good for masterworks but bad for your brand.
To be honest, I prefer to watch movie with subtitles rather than voice over
Most of times, it is because the voice over actor were sound more awkward than the original actor voice
Woahh that would be so cool! I honestly refused to watch dubbed movies haha
I'm so comfortable in my mother tongue tamil if someone makes a perfect translation tool english to tamil or tamil i just get 10times stronger in knowledge because people get more confident when they speak in their mother tongue ! But a perfect translation tool is impossible in this decade maybe ai should do but today's ai growth is not enought for such level translation ! But I'm glad someone does that our some effort !
Damn sounds like a gargantuan task
Are you sponsored by Rich? You should have mentioned it .
Here's the algorithm, GET WOKE = GO BROKE.
Class dismissed.
That is what happens when you focus not on customers but something else...
Wang summed up the future with just one sentence ⚡️
is this guy low key Tom Holland ? :D..................by the way, great content tho
please make video on how AR or VR change the world
This is NOT enough to save company which has may other issues.
