As a replica of the movie prop it’s top tier!!! On another archaeological turn: ever since I first saw the movie I had to go along with the “this is the cup of a carpenter” jazz knowing full well a common 1st century ceramic cup did not have a stem like that! I work with an archaeological pottery specialist on digs in Israel and I showed him the “carpenter’s cup” and he just laughed! HOWEVER, The Last Crusade being a movie and image is everything the art director of course had to come up with something common but still look grail-ish. And they succeeded!
Frankly, if you take pretty much any hollywood movie containing historical objects and show them to expert in the field, it would only produce laugh. Or cringe. Like, for instance, hollywood "russians" speaking "russian" with such a crude accent, real russians can barely understand it.
@@RS-ls7mm True. At this point Jesus was years into religious career and could have a life style totally different from his foster fathers family. So all that "cup of a carpenter" thing in the movie sounds as quite a stretch.
I've identified at least 3 grails on screen in the film. This replica appears to be based on the True Hero Grail, the first one we see when Indy "chooses wisely" and drinks from in the grail knight's room. We also see it in the close up when Indy touches it hanging in the crevasse. It has an unlevel mouth, and the original now has a Lucasfilm inventory number on the bottom. It was on display at ILM for several years. The second grail in the film I call Henry's grail. It has different details and paint, but similar in color with a bit more patina. This is the one Indy carries out to Henry, is later picked up by Elsa, and we also see it laying on the stone shelf in the crevasse. The third one is a stunt grail probably made of hard rubber. It's first seen creating the foaming effect on Henry, probably vinegar poured onto a baking soda wound or similar. The paint is primarily brown instead of the reddish clay of the other 2, and has lost most of its inner gold leafing. This grail is also seen bouncing around the floor and falling into the crevasse after Elsa drops it. I have seen another grail at Skywalker Ranch, which doesn't seem to match any of the screen used ones. It may be a test, or a duplicate made for display...
My painting instructor in college used the word "labored" or "over-labored" to describe heavy-handed paint work. When you were fishing for a word that is what popped into my head. Thanks for the video and thanks for reminding me what a great teacher Mr. Petersen was.
We all have our "holy grail" dreams and I am glad that you found your personal one! Oddly enough, my own "Holy Grail" is the..."Grail Diary". Back when I was hunting and researching, I came across an eBay listing for one called a "master edition." Turns out it was a Tannis Props creation w/ a COA and a hand-numbered 17/25 on the inside back cover. One of the best 2 pieces in the house, am glad I found one!
Something I never got; why are there gold splotches on the Grail? Like, they make such a big deal out of it being "the simple cup of a carpenter" and not one of the fancy gold chalices around it. Why not just have it be a completely plain fired earthenware or carved wooden cup?
@@FrankFurther like... that's a rich affectation, or something the later church might do to a holy relic, but none of the churches that did that stuff were AROUND when the grail was supposedly lost. And if it had been fully gilded and the gilding had worn away, who was fondling it so much that they wore away the gold leaf?
maybe it was done after it was discovered to be the holy grail so they didnt confuse it with their other cups lol and then wore off through time and changing hands
My theory, the knight did it so it would blend in better with the other cups and the wear and tear are also from him cause he's a Templar Knight who should have died centuries ago, so he's gotta use it to keep living and guarding it.
No. It's "That's the cup of a carpenter.", not "a carpenter's cup" as you would, implying it's wood. If you look middle eastern style ceramic type goblets that are period correct, you'll find a resemblance to the overall shape. Whomever made the goblet did some research.
I always thought it was coil ware ceramic, slightly crudely smoothed, the terracotta color suggesting cheap red clay, 'the cup of a carpenter'. All the gold was supposedly added later by 'the church'. The prop was probably turned wood, and then a mould taken to produce the urethane plastic copies?
I have a photoscan of the exact screen used grail that Indy first picks and drinks from in the knight's chamber. It used to be displayed in one of the hallways at ILM, and I photographed it twice, 2 years apart. It just happened that at some point it was taken out and put back rotated 180° between photos, which gave me a complete scan! I've identified at least 3 grails on screen in the film. I've screen matched all the details of the paint job, and this replica looks very close to that painting style.
Thank you for sharing this, Adam! You helped me further my collection. I have the jacket from Wested Leather that a friend generously gifted to me a long time ago when Peter Botwright was still at the helm of the company and the default option they offered was to make them bespoke to your measurements for what was seriously a genuinely reasonable price, and now I can have the actual holy grail. I have to work on the hat, now. I currently have the Disneyland one that was being sold about 20 years ago and to be honest it's of a higher quality than I would expect from a gift shop but I'd love to get something a little closer to the original.
Adam! We know you love swords and with your huge collection of Indy props. I’m surprised that you’ve never made the Grail Knight’s Sword from Last Crusades. But if you have and I missed it. I’d love to see that build. I’d make it myself but I don’t have a way of shaping metal yet :) Long long long time viewer! Thanks again so much :)
I am 34 years old. I idolize Indiana Jones, ever since I first saw it when I was 8. I know the history of Jesus and the Grail from being raised catholic. I always thought it was a stoneware or earthen grail with gilding on the inside. Fitting enough, I thought putting gold gilding on the inside was to help keep it clean and showcase your wealth. Being a carpenter, Jesus didn't have much money but he might have spent it on something simple that he would use every day. I DID NOT REALIZE that the entire thing was gilded, and the clay/earthen texture was actually Christ's blood from when he was stabbed through the heart by one of Pilot's soldiers. They collected his blood in this chalice, and it stained the gold with his blood. Amazing!
Nice. On the one I have which was a 3D print I painted and weathered it, added gold leaf, and as a little extra I placed a small LED in the stem to give it a heavenly glow.
@RobPanico Right? It had absolutely everything that a kid might've used to make a spacecraft, e.g., an old carnival ride, augmented by washing machine, television, and various other salvage yard parts. Yet they took it to the next level by adding safety equipment and "aviation lighting," although it was the "bubble" alone, which actually provided the ability to "explore".
@PureKodiakWild the DeLorean is still available thanks to a team who own the rights and parts, in Texas. You might have to add your own additional time machine parts, Doc, but it'll definitely reach at least 88 MPH stock.
Is it supposed to be ceramic or wood? I assumed wood, as when they drop the grail and knocked it around a couple times, it didn't break. I would think if it was ceramic, it would have shattered. I assumed their intent was a wood cup.
I had always assumed "cup of a carpenter" was essentially meaning a Working Class cup-- cheap, common, nothing special. But now that I think about it more, it's an ambiguous line. It really does sound like they mean it's wooden. I wonder if woodturning was common in the time of Jesus?
@@kneesturnedvelvet3725 I never considered that the carpenter made the cup--that he just owned it. Plus, the inside of it shines with a gold-like finish. It looks like it has a light inside to make that finish stand out.

Interesting thing, The Holy Grail is a unique object. It is a very essence of the thing. So, probably, is the prop used in the movie. And here we see a copy number 9.

Disney is also selling a replica of this, the headpiece of the staff of ra, the sankara stone, the crystal skull, and the fertility idol at disneyland The grail is 50 bucks and its rather nice
I was worried about the potential price, but I'm pleasantly surprised. It's not cheap, but it's hand-decorated and 1:1 scale with the original (unlike their Golden Idol from Raiders).
I actually think the price is much too high for this piece. Its a single piece with a uniform pattern over the whole thing. $199 wouldve been fair imo but $399?!
"don't drink out of it" oh don't worry, we've all SEEN what happens when you drink out of an imitation grail....
this person gets it.
"He chose...poorly."
😂 I don't want to age 100s of years in 10 seconds either

Very funny !!!!!
Adam should get a bunch of the false grails to surround the real one.
"Grail" IV & V? 😛
Yes, and that anyone drinking those fake grails would choose poorly.
That gave me nightmares as a kid lol
