  • A short demonstration on how to walk a flatbed under a vehicle without using the winch. Used for a vehicle with no keys, broken ball joints or if you’re just a few feet shy of getting that car all the way into a parking spot. Truck Info: 2017 Kenworth T270 paired with a Chevron Model 14 Low Pro flatbed with remote controlled winch and stationary headache rack.
    **NOTE**
    Some beds will NOT allow you to do this with them because they do not negative tilt far enough or your feet by the wheel lift are too low to the ground.

    I would never show up to a scene on a vehicle that I’ve never driven before and automatically start rolling the bed under the front tires. You will be the guy chasing a car down the street someday. Always hook up the mini j hooks or a nylon bridal to the winch. And out of free spool mode. Then u can walk the bed under safely with a car that cannot roll away.

    This also works in tight spots when you can’t fully extend your bed like in packed dealership lots. Great video!

    I used this technique before. Really didn’t like the wheels off the ground a lot of stress on the truck. There is another way to do it. But the bed under the front wheels set your chains and put wrecker in neutral and winch the wrecker under the vehicle it had worked for me the 12 years I have been driving a wrecker

      It really good for someone that has a broken ball joint. When u have a straight shot from the back. I never have used skates or anything like that. I need to post a video of pulling the wrecker under the vehicle it’s really easy.

      I’m glad it worked out for you bro. Now that you’ve done it once, you’ll use it more often than you think. Lol. I do it all the time for different reasons. Broken ball joints just got easier for you. Here’s something else you could practice to build off of this: take a vehicle from the tow yard that’s going to scrap and take a front wheel off. Load it like this from the rear, shake it off the end of the bed and place a block between the edge of your bed and the unibody or frame and lift the vehicle up. MAKE SURE YOUR CABLE IS TIGHT AND HOLDING THE VEHICLE! Place a jack stand under the car and set the car on the jack stand. Then work your levers slowly to walk out from under the car while it’s on a jack stand. One thing to watch, if your truck has airbags and they’re dumped on offload, when the rear of the truck sits back down on the ground, that rear axle will push the truck forward. So as you’re putting the truck back down, go slow. Once the wrecker moves forward a bit, slowly release your cable so it doesn’t pull the vehicle off of the jack stand. Make sure the wheel that’s still on the vehicle is blocked as well because with one missing, it’s like the vehicle is in neutral and it will roll forward on you.

    You only have to lift the rear end of the truck off of the ground if your fast idle/PTO won’t stay engaged if you release the brakes. Or put the truck in neutral if you don’t have air brakes.

    My only input is. If you do this more often than not, you might want to make a sling to support the weight of the rearend instead of having you shocks extended and supporting about 1,500 pound rearend. Especially if your rollback has air ride suspension. Other than that. Great video 👍🏼

It's nice to see towers thinking outside the box...and not in some unsafe outlandish way....you could prolly also do a video like this when winter comes and show how this very same technique, used in a similar fashion, could be used to get ''unstuck'' in your flatbed. keep up the good work.

      Split Second Towing this does work if you get stuck. If you sink the rear and the front, DONT TRY THIS!!! You’ll dig your front end in a deeper hole. And NEVER use the wheel lift to walk yourself out. Those inner tubes aren’t made for that type of pressure and you WILL bend it. They’re about $900 to replace... just replaced one on a used renegade we bought last week with the inner tube bent...

    I love using that move. But I also use a move where once I lower the bed I will release the air brakes with the truck in neutral and winch the truck under the vehicle. Or use the bed like a brake then you don’t stretch the bags out.

      T Sip with that truck, I couldn’t release the brakes and have the truck idled up. In the new 2020 you see in recent videos, I have that over ride so this particular technique isn’t used as often unless I’m on an accident scene and have to move the truck a few feet to get that extra needed space to get a vehicle on the deck.

    I’ll have to try your method sometime. I slide the bed under the wheels then get in the rollback and back up in reverse. Your method keeps you at one spot where I’ll usually adjust the bed tilt to stay clear of the pavement and underside of the vehicle.

      Only reason I quit doing this is I had a vehicle that broke a park pin halfway up the deck effectively putting it in neutral. Thankfully i had the e brake set and it rolled to the end and stopped. This way, you have control of the vehicles with the cable so it can’t decide to leave and go to the drop off destination before you do. Lol. Just something to think about. But yes, that way does work as well and I’ve used it for many years until that happened to me one time. Tha LFT it was a totaled vehicle that we ended up getting the title to so I didn’t have to pay for a transmission.

    The truck i drive wont lift the wheels with the bed. I eventually figured out i can use the wheel lift to walk the truck. Ive thought about installing switches to bypass the park brake and shift interlocks for the pto. Then the truck could just roll, but since the wheel lift works i probably wont.

    I have a rollback too but mine's a different style it's an old school Jordans where it uses a wedge style to tilt the bed so it doesn't allow me to do that exact same thing because it won't tilt as much I can do about a foot at a time so usually I do is I get my bed underneath the tires that can roll the front or back depending on the vehicle once I get it up high enough where my back housing where my willift would be my truck doesn't have it installed anymore because the previous owner broke it in half and took it off once I have the whole rear end floating where it's not dragging I get in my truck and ask you back my truck under until it's about a foot or two usually about a foot or up against the back tires of the vehicle that do not move and I have the very back part of the bed almost dragging the ground when I back up it's really like an inch off the ground

      That is the walking the bed method, Lifting the rear axles and sliding the truck is walking the bed.

    Great video for releasing and pulling it up but all of that seems like its putting unnecessary wear and tear on the hydraulics and fram of the bed dosent it???

      alberto castellanos it’s the same leverage walking the truck as it is loading that vehicle. Picking up about the same amount of weight. If I was lifting the entire wrecker, I’d agree 100%. But the rear end of that wrecker doesn’t weigh a lot. Gross wet weight of that wrecker is 16,500#. My bed is rated for 16,000 and Only picking up a little over half of that if not right at half. It won’t put anymore strain on that bed that it isn’t rated for. But to the naked eye at first glance, yes, it looks like I’m going to destroy this wrecker. Lol

    I prefer to attach cable first, put my truck in neutral. I then winch my truck under the vehicle. I use wheel chocks/blocks on both vehicles. I will keep moving blocks for tow truck as it moves back. This method is very hard on the bed slide cylinder, and bed slides. But, is sometimes necessary due to a hill, or to get rear of truck over an obstacle(curb, parking block, etc...).

      That is a terribly inefficient and questionable method, I have never heard of, or done that in my life, Never come across a situation where that might even be beneficial, Skates are so much easier.

      I use either version, depending on the vehicles and geography. Recently, I hauled a Ferrari F 12 with a rear flat. I started the bed under the front tires with my slider wedges. The car doesn't have a neutral mode that I could get the transmission into. As such, I left the suspension deflated and walked the bed back to the rear tires and snugged the winch along the way. Once the tip of the bed was started under the rear tires, I dosed the bed with Dawn and water, sliding them a few inches forward. I lifted the bed up with tilt and towbar to allow sliding it forward without tail dragging the car. Once level and forward, the car slides easily on the slick liquid. Strapped the wheels and away we go. At the dealer, high tilt the bed and ease the winch. Usually the slickum has enough residual to allow the car to slide back to the end of the bed. Gotta be careful, but getting the tires halfway off the edge will allow the bed to slide away from the tires when you set them in place. Free spool the winch and walk the truck out. The hooks get flipped out when the front tires are about a foot up the bed and the bridle gets pulled clear, allowing the bed to be withdrawn a few inches at a time, minimizing nose contact with the deck.
      I certainly could have started the car and driven it back, but maintaining its immobility prevents any ground scraping. The car's damage was limited to the wheel and tire. Nothing added by the truck.

    You dont need your tires all the way off the ground tbh and you put more strain on the truck. Takes longer to do it that way but better than lifting the full rear up.

    Thanks for the clear demo! I’ve needed to do this a lot with vehicles that don’t have keys, but always ended up messing it up. How can you do this for all wheel drive vehicles?

      Sorry for the extremely late reply. UA-cam should send notifications like Facebook... all wheel drive vehicles can be a pain. But with the few that I’ve done in south Louisiana, the rear rolls free if the front is still on the ground. Idk why, I’m not a mechanic and I’ve never put much thought into why but sometimes i get lucky and it happens. Others that are totally locked down, get out the tire skates and load it like that. Generally just skating the side in loading first. But that’s a whole different video because you can get the tires onto the edge of the truck, lift the bed a few inches off of the ground, release the brakes in the truck and pull the wrecker under the vehicle using the disabled vehicle as a dead weight. Once the other axle gets to the edge of the bed, reapply brakes and load normal. Just don’t forget to reapply the brakes. You know what would happen if you did. I believe I’ve seen multiple fail videos where people are chasing their vehicles down a hill. Lol

    Great job, however this might bend the frame on the F-550 or ram 5500 Roll back, but with a Pete or KW, you can do this all day!

      I agree. Definitely could bend a frame on a f550 and the dodge if they’re not built correctly. Still wouldn’t do it even if they were though. They don’t make em like they used to. That’s for sure...

    So, how would you apply this to say an AWD or FWD platform with the new electronic parking brake. With either a dead batt or no key rendering it a brick.

      Tire skates. And I haven’t found a good way to do it that doesn’t take a considerable amount of time. I hate these new electric park brakes. No way to override them. Had a fiat 500 that was totally locked up the other day sitting on 3 flats raise my blood pressure a good bit the other day. Thankfully fiat is leaving the US next year and they’re taking their electrical problem ridden cars with them. Lol

    My roll back is has air ride, I wouldn’t be able to do this. I also think that’s a lot of stress on the pivot rod, I’ve seen them break.

      My truck also has air ride and all you’re doing is picking up the real axle with that pin. If it can’t handle that, it probably shouldn’t be in the road to begin with.

    Why not just hook chains on to locked vehicle,tip bes slightly and winch truck under casualty.
    And keep tires super close to end of deck and "back chain" .
    And to unload just a minor twitch to bed. Car off. And reverse operation and drive out from under . At last foot stop. Dump bed and tilt suck in and away one goes.

    Adam, just running across your video. I'm still a little confused on how were able to walk the truck back and forth. Where you using the wheel lift to lift the rear end of the tow truck up? I saw a video of another guy doing it, but he put his truck in neutral to do it.

      No, I was using the deck to lift the rear. If you use the wheel lift to do that and push the truck forward, you risk bending the inner tube. Sorry for the late response. UA-cam doesn't have very good notifications for comments. I apologize

    There is a place for walking the bed, I've done it a time or two, But seems to me a lot of the "reasons" for walking the bed are to make up for not knowing your truck and not being able to back up far enough or backing up too far, and it seems another "reason" is lack of skates, Skates are the go to for no keys, No dragging of the vehicle, The vehicle stays in park and you drag the skates with the car on top, Reduces the resistance greatly, reduces the stress on the vehicle during the entire loading and unloading process, and it's just better for no keys.
    Not to mention skates work for vehicles with all the wheels locked or vehicles you have to get from the drive tires, This method only works as shown when your drive tires on opposite of your truck and will stay on the ground for most of the process, otherwise you will just be pushing the vehicle back, Also "shaking the vehicle off" is a method we all use don't get me wrong, but only on wrecked cars do I do that, It's hard on the vehicle's transmission, I've heard of guys breaking shit on the car shaking it off, and its hard on the truck.

      My truck actually have two sets of wreck master locking skates on it. I had to use this today as a matter of fact. Had an E350 handicap bus that over heated. Sure, I could have just drug the rear end the 4 feet it took to get the rear tires on the end of the bed. Or, I could release the brakes on the wrecker, hit the cruise override on my control box and pulled the wrecker under the bus like I did to prevent the rear of the bus dragging on the pavement. Or how about a broken ball joint on a crown Vic? I could drag the bumper and front end on the ground loading it or I could do this. And when I get to the drop off, I can place the front end on a jack stand for a customer and walk the truck out from under the vehicle so the customer doesn’t have to fight with a jack later. You call it not knowing your truck, I call it customer service at its finest.

      @@adamtarver I mean as I said there is a time and place for it, setting it on jack stands is a good example, and I'm not trying to diss your methods after all there are a million ways to do the same task.
      Whatever works for you is what you should do, but I question some of the described situations and whether or not it would be quicker or more beneficial to walk the truck, dragging a car I will always recommend skates over dragging it even an inch it's harder on your equipment and the vehicle being towed and skates reduce the resistance to overcome, the entire loading and unloading process.
      as for broken ball joint, I will still recommend a ball joint block, takes longer but with a broken ball joint dragging the car at all is going to risk lodging the wheel up in the fender or causing damage to the surrounding plastic or the fender when dragging the wheel up.
      If the vehicle is too low on the ball joint block a skate works there too it will keep that wheel from rolling while all the rest continue to roll and it will make it even that much easier while keeping the wheel from damaging the fender.
      But yes there are reasons to do this and it's a good thing to know, but I do question some of the reasons, but I have done it and continue to do so when it could be useful.
      And yes a majority of the time I've seen this technique used was by companies not knowing how far to back up and using it to reposition their truck mid unload because they were too far back or forward.

      beastm0de7 I made this video mainly for the ops that don’t have the skates and blocks or really the necessary equipment to load vehicles that are locked in park or for some reason that they would have to drag the vehicle if they don’t have skates or blocks. A cheap bottle of tire wet from DG works wonders sometimes. I use that sometimes even if I do have skates. Lol. I see what you’re saying now. I’ve seen some guys do the same thing. They either back up too far or too close. Hell, I’ve done it a couple of times. I’m no saint. Lol. The truck I was in when I filmed this one is a 2017 KW T270 with a chevron model 12 LCG bed. The one I’m in now is a 2020 kw with the chevron model 12 LCG Load Rite bed with the dovetail on the end. I don’t like doing this too often with this new bed because it seems like chevron sacrificed a little bit of structure due to the sunken deck. I’ve got just under 10k on this new truck now and will be posting a video soon that’ll show the differences between the two trucks and how I have the new one setup as far as equipment. There, you’ll see the different things I use on the daily to make my life easier. If you see that video and can offer any feedback, I’d appreciate it. Whether is equipment that you have that I don’t or vice versa. This channel is designed to make our lives easier. I was brought into this industry “figuring it out” and driving total junk. I figure now it’s time to pass down my experiences, good or bad, to some of the guys that don’t have access to the right equipment for the job and are just winging it like I did for so many years.     Nice. I use this method all the time to get myself unstuck. I charge the customer a little extra for labor cause I just went above and beyond to winch you out.. Just not sure if my bags should be dumped or filled. When I do this.. Your thoughts

      cdells77 dumped. Always load and unload dumped. These trucks are equipped with leveling valves. When you add weight, the valve adds air, when you shed weight, the valve dumps air. Put a lot of wear and tear on that valve. Plus, if you’re aired up, you’ll fight the suspension and won’t be able to move the truck as far. I always dump. Especially when unloading on the deck because if you don’t put the bed down far enough, once the vehicle gets totally off the bed, the bags have extra air in them to compensate for the weight of the vehicle and could potentially pick the end of your bed up striking the bottom of the bumper on a car. I haven’t seen any formal articles on this issue but I’m basing my thoughts purely on personal experience as an operator and a mechanic.

      Sidenote*** don’t use this same advice when loading a vehicle on the wheel lift. Leave your bags aired to load. My reasoning behind that is when you put your arms on a liftbthe vehicle, while you’re applying straps, the wreckers bags are “catching up”. By the time you’re strapped and your lights are on, the ride height has leveled and you can set your safety chains without having to get back in the truck, flip the switch, go back to the back of the truck and wait on the airbags to do their thing. Leave Em up, it’ll save you some time. But I always unload the wheel lift with the bags dumped because when you take the weight off, the bags will have that extra air in them and you can possibly blow an airbag up depending on the weight of the vehicle and how much air the valve had to put in them to level the truck. The bags will split off of the cup at the bottom of the bag. Just food for thought...

    That’s pretty awesome I like it.... BUUUT doing this won’t damage the flatbed? I would much rather just disengage the transmission then to do this to my flatbed in my opinion.

      Not right away but like anything more stress =more wear and tear it's ok in a pinch. But I recommend off road go Jack's and skates become you close friends

      Khasro sul all wheel drive vehicles are kind of rare here in south Louisiana. But, if you want to use this for an awd, you would load the same way. Except you would use skates on the front end. Load it just like in this video. The skate method also works with rear wheel drive vehicles with no keys and tires turned. If I can get hold of an awd I can play with, I will keep you in mind.

      Could always put 2x6s down under the edge of the bed to pad the parking lot but I’ve never had an issue with this at all. It gets well over 100 degrees in the summer time where im at and I’ve never caused damage to pavement. Doing it in limestone is a different story. Normally have to get out the shovel once I’m done and back fill just a bit but the customer is still happy because I didn’t tear up their caprice classic that isn’t worth the tow bill with the broken ball joint on the front end.

      Jerome Medina not anymore than loading a 550 or something on it. You’re just lifting the rear of the truck. Not the whole thing. These trucks are light on the back to start with.

      Split Second Towing not a problem. I started using the hero 3 silver. That was a great camera. Unfortunately, someone needed it more than I did. Took a weekend off while working for a different service and it grew legs and walked out of my wrecker while it was parked at the yard over the weekend. Craziest thing I ever saw...

    Rear wheel drive?? I just back up then lay my bed down and get back in my truck and put in reverse and drive my truck under it . Fl_lck breaking my wheel lift.

      I wouldn’t recommend doing this with weaker beds. If you have tiny lift and bed extend cylinders, as on a kilar, I wouldn’t recommend it. You can bend a cylinder or warp the bed. This is a chevron model 14 that I’m using with a good, thick rail under it.

    Easiest way to unload a totaled vehicle, lift bed way up let it slide off (cable still hooked) and walk it out the rest of the way ,,, done

      Haziel islas-lozano I agree. But, it’ll be like dragging your skates over a cheese grater on asphalt. I’m a HUGE fan of skates and use them regularly. I carry two sets at all times. They’re lifesavers no doubt. But even with skates, customers don’t like their vehicle drug in park. Some people are finicky about their 1999 f-150 with two different color doors and the rusted hood... good point though. And I need to do a video on skates now. Gave me a good idea. Can do one on how to use skates to reposition the vehicle on the bed during the securement stage and how to use an emergency brake, if it works, to reposition a vehicle while loading it. I know, sounds kind of backwards because we’re trying to teach operators how to not drag a vehicle but feathering an e brake is a real life saver sometimes. Especially on accidents with no keys and the wheel locked...

      @@adamtarver If a customer doesn't like the idea of skates you have 2 options, Don't tow their vehicle Or explain to them the physics and math behind skates to convince them that they are the best option, as for skates on asphalt, As long as it's a hard surface skates will do their job, grass, gravel, etc it won't help but hard surfaces it will, it might scrape up or gouge the skates but they are only 100 bucks for a set if you need to replace them and you can always file/sand them back smooth if you don't like the gouges and scrapes although it really doesn't make a difference.

    Way too much time and work on your bed/truck ..ya'll must have trucks in the shop monthly needing hydraulic hoses replaced greased etc ..they sell skates and snatch blocks to save you from doing shit like this ..yea it may look cool for your customer but the fuking customers dont pay for maintenance or a circus show..just my opinion.. but I'm a hustler and speaking for the hustlers in the rollback industry ..we are on to the next call safely and time efficient using modern equipment meant to save your equipment from this shit

      Allen C you must be used to operating junk then if you’re talking about a wrecker being in the shop monthly. Our trucks are maintained regularly and are greased often. Matter of fact, we’ve never blew a line on any of them like you stated in your unnecessary comment. Don’t like the video? That’s fine. Just move on but instead you tried to make me look stupid and it backfired. So you keep hustling and operating trash that stays in the shop. I’ll continue to give my customers the best service possible with a lifetime worth of experience. And FYI, skates don’t always work and a lot of times they’re more trouble than they are worth. You do you, and we will continue to do us. Go “hustle” somewhere else and make those pennies while i continue to take customers from people like you.

      @@adamtarver ... I concur. The company I work for has had the usual run of tow truck drivers employed by them for the 57 years they've been in business. I came to work for them six years ago and originally was being paid in the same manner as the other guys. I got a bit frustrated with the pay system and after I had proven my ability, I told them that I wasn't going to continue doing the time sheets and they could figure out a way to pay me equitably, or let me go. On the second day after my notification, I was delivering a car to a shop when two supervisors showed up. I figured I was being fired, so I puffed up and confronted them, saying I guess this is it! They looked shocked and said NO NO! We don't want you to quit! We're just visiting the shop! We got a laugh out of it. As it turned out, I have been accommodated and get salary based pay that I'm happy with. I'm also the go-to guy when something is going to be difficult. I have too many special jobs to list, but one that comes to mind is an older Mercedes Benz in a driveway at an uphill angle with sunken air suspension. Two other companies went to the place and told the owner that it couldn't be pulled from the driveway without getting the suspension inflated. Customer called the dealer and they referred him to our company. I got the call and went out there, 35 miles. It was a bit of a challenge, but the simple use of a floor jack gave me the advantage I needed. Loaded it up and hauled it to the dealer to get a new key.
