  • I bought a used LGB V 200 033 which has drive train issues. In this video you get to see how to change broken gears. I am also replacing the existing decoder for a new ESU XL 5 decoder. Last but not least we are enjoying a test ride on my friends layout. Buckle up and have some fun!

Great. I love your friends layout, but am dying to see more of yours.
when will you be placing the buildings? I look forward to seeing what your track inspectors make of them.
Where abouts in Germany are you?
    I´m in Denmark

His layout is established many years so the greenery is dialed in and looks fantastic. It´s also very safe to operate, now derailments or any of that good stuff. I used his layout for the test ride since mine is not ready to operate yet. I am currently working on wiring, plattforms, lanterns and so on. You will see this in the upcomming videos. After the plattforms are set I will begin to install the buildings. They are in my basement for the most part and are desperately waiting to get outside. I am in southern Germany. Thaks for your support :)

    Hi Robert!

A nice loco. If you need to replace a small axle and gearing in the future. Try placing theaxle in the freezer box for a bout ten minutes and bring it to your bench on some ice. It should contract the metal enough to help slide the gearing on easier.

Hello Robert, another kind of video from you. Very interesting. I wonder what happened to the V200 to end-up with all axle gears broken. Did it drive against an obstacle at full power or bad quality gears? Filmed in great details and quality as usual. Ï was surprised of how much space there is inside the locomotive. ESU always boosts the sound out of factory. It was a question of survival for the track inspectors to lower the volume :-) Thanks again for sharing. Nice trains running in a sunny garden layout. Have a wonderful week.

The original gears made out of white plastic are commonly known to fail in this model. I have had 3 cases so far, all with the same problem. Once you change them to the new, black gears it works fine. The sound seems very loud inside on a hard surface, in the garden the volume is ok. If you adjust the volume to a nice level inside you won´t hear hardly anyting outside. I made that mistake once...

@@summitrailway Good to know that. Indeed outdoors, the level of ambient noise probably covers part of the lok sound

Robert, nice loco repair video. Glad you’re able to find the new gears. Good as new now. 👍
Question can you run both loco in consist or you power each loco separately? Ron//

Right now you can get hold of these gears relativity easily, there have been other times. My friend had the same problem years ago and he searched months until he got the spare parts. Each loco is fully independent, they each have a decoder and speaker and can be run stand alone. I use the Massoth multi traction function to run both together.

I also have a UA-cam channel and my dream is to build a garden railroad. I’m Italian and I enjoy when I watch your video (excuse me for my english)

Hi Robert, I'm following your video since 2 years as they are very interesting.
I've a layout in Italy and I recently bought a LGB V200. Your last video was very useful. Also my LGB V200 have 1 Gearbox broken and I need t substitute it. Could you please tell me where you found spare parts.
I need also to install a Decoder. I never used ESU in te past. For a similar2 motors loco I used Massoth XLS on board as the cabling is easier and you don't need to eliminate the existing Board or cut the wires. Unfortunately I saw that Massoth decoders are discontinued. Could you please can provide info or advice on the decoder cabling and the Speaker installed. In the video I saw you cut all the cables for connecting to the ESU decoder.
Thanks in advance for the info

Hi! The broken gears are a common problem for some of the V200 models. I have had 3 models of different people (including mine) with the same problem. Luckily it is easy to fix as long as you have the spare parts. The part nuber is LGB E135085. Just google it, currently they are available. Look for the black gears not the ones made out of white plastic and buy 4 of them even though you only have 1 broken gear - you will need them. I have used Massoth decoders in the past but I don´t like them for several reasons. Once I switched to ESU I got to enjoy advanced driving characteristics, a nice programming software (you have to use esu programmer unit) and lots of other functions. There are many other good prducts out there but I have settled on ESU for all of my personal models. In conjunction with a Visaton FRS 7 speaker the sound is fantastic to. Yes I eliminate all original Boards and wire directly to the decoder ... less stuff that can go wrong. The decoder manual is very clear about where to connect your cabels to but if you are not familiar with some basic electrical knowledge you should be very careful. Connecting it wrong may destroy LED´s or the decoder worst case. Good luck and stay tuned!

@@summitrailway Thanks Robert for your advice. I already ordered 4 black gear to substitute the broken one. As soon as they arrive I change them putting the wheel box in the freezer to facilitate the extraction. As regards the decoder I decided to move to ESU 5XL. I read the manual in the ESU site and I think to connect to the mother board with the Massoth connection cable. My V200 has already a DCC socket (10pins) in the mother board to facilitate the connection and not hhaving issue with LEDs. Thanks a lot and hope to see your next video soon.

Don´t they provide automatice subtitles. I am not sure how to insert subitles on youtube. In this video you haven´t missed much anyways since I haven´t talked a lot. Other than the loco sound of course...
