New book details Israel's secret history of assassinations

I read the book and learned a lot. Bergman does pay a lot of attention to the view of many inside Israel and Mossad that the policy was often a technical victory but a strategic failure, and ends with Meir Dagan's criticism of the policy (and he had been defence minister and director of Mossad). The best example is of course the 2004 assassination of Sheik Yaseen, the leader of Hamas in Gaza. Under his leadership Hamas had little to do with Iran. After his death the new leaders turned to Iran and Hamas became much more dangerous. Likewise the Lebanese invasion in 1982 succeeded in expelling the PLO from Lebanon, but led to the growth of Hezbollah which has proven a much more deadly enemy to Israel. So the book is far from a one sided celebration of the policy and deals with the moral bankruptcy and broader failure. It is well worth a read whatever your views on the rights and wrongs in the middle east.

Israel's Counter-terrorism techniques are apparently effective, but nobody tells you they're used mainly against the very people Israel occupies and oppresses. This raises very serious questions on what qualifies as terrorism, let alone counter-terrorism.
