    At work, I am frequently unloading, loading, carrying, and/or stacking 25 lbs and 50 lbs bags of granules. Kettlebell training has completely changed the way I do this (and the relative ease with which I do it), and Mark's videos have helped me reframe my thoughts around it. It is no longer work for me. It is fun. It's a workout. I'm getting paid to burn some calories and increase my strength, endurance and work capacity. When I have time, I don't even use the dolly to move them. I dead clean the bags to my shoulder and carry them to the stacks.

    Talk about a timely video, just picked up a second kbell of matching weight (for another purpose) and saw this the following day. As someone who has had issues with lower back and other areas related to mobility, glad to have found this channel. I tried this just now, and it felt a lot better than regular deadlifts ever have for me.

    I find that my glutes & legs fire a bit differently when I keep the handles 'horizontal' as opposed to as you've demo'd (i.e. 'vertically') -- nothing wrong with that! I do both, just to mix things up. But I feel better/stronger with the handles horiz. (esp. with heavier wts)
    P.S.: Hey Mark, looking forward to the KB RDL series of videos...!

    I watched one of your other videos today, and did those kettlebell exercises today at the gym. I want to incorporate more into my routine, but have to be very careful with my low back, as it has been injured in the past, and now is more susceptible to flair-ups. I am hoping some of the exercises will strengthen my lower body, and make injury less susceptible. I think I am going to hire a personal trainer at the gym for a few sessions to help me out.

    I can’t get both bells between the legs very easily, so I have done double outside kettlebell swings; otherwise I just do a two-handed swing using a bell that’s twice as heavy.

    Question on the rib cage down que: do you mean this to get a slight extension in the lower back - sort of rounding the low back? Or are you trying to compact straight down?

    • @brawndothethirstmutilator9848
      @brawndothethirstmutilator9848 Рік тому +1

      My understanding of Mark’s use of that phrase is to ensure that people avoid rib flair (i.e. avoid thoracic extension and keep a neutral spine).

    Random thought exercise: would you consider Turkish getups or just getups in general to be deadlifts? Right here right now while this question just entered my mind, I would say the getups I'm aware of can be thought of as deadlifts since the movements start from positions where there is no kinetic and no potential energy in the system. I guess any that rely on momentum would not be deadlifts. Not actually saying I would yank anything from my programming based on exercise classification since I see usefulness in performing as many movement patterns as possible in any given training week, but I'm just curious for thoughts on the question...

    • @kuzmatt9
      @kuzmatt9 Рік тому +2

      A Turkish getup is a chest press, overhead press, and lunge, right? The lower body lift is from one knee

    • @peterbruck4363
      @peterbruck4363 Рік тому

      Agree. TGUs are presses.

    • @maxpower8052
      @maxpower8052 Рік тому +2

      I am looking at it from an energy perspective. At the beginning the kettlebell is not moving and the athlete has to roll to their side to grasp the bell, roll the bell over their chest, and initiate the rest of the complex movement, which includes a hip hinging element that most people seem to equate to deadlifting even though not all hip hinges are deadlifts, as in windmills. I guess it depends on if you include the roll over to put the bell on the chest part as being part of the TGU or not; for most people, I guess their first rep per side would be a deadlift following my view but their subsequent ones would not be since they probably don't roll over the bell between reps to reset for the next rep on the same side. Once on the chest, I'd agree, the bell now contains potential energy being off the floor.. Anyway, I can see your point of view. Thanks for providing your input to my random question fellow commenters!

    • @brawndothethirstmutilator9848
      @brawndothethirstmutilator9848 Рік тому +2

      TGU is a vertical carry. It relies on “pressing” muscles of the lower and upper body, but it’s a weighted carry.
      It does included a muted hip hinge (from the Windmill to the Half-Kneel), but I don’t know of any coaches that program it as a deadlift. Too quadriceps dominant imo.

  • @mikeschertzer941

    Mark, what do you think about double swings between the legs vs. double suitcase swings? I find that suitcase swings are much more comfortable with doubles vs. between the legs. It's a bit odd because I find double cleans between the legs to be fine, but the pace of swings makes it uncomfortable when between the legs, so I just do suitcase swings.
