I have three different weights for different exercises. i.e. 20lb kettlebell for Turkish Get-up and 24kg for swings. I do my cleans, squats, and snatches with a 35lb kettlebell. Someday, maybe everything will be with the 24kg but I'm in no rush. At 68 years of age, my core is the strongest it has ever been and I can attest to the fact that I NEVER have back pain anymore. Oh, and btw, Mark Wildman changed my life with these videos.
@@lewisham The two kettlebells that I referenced in pounds, were purchased as such. The 24kg kettlebell was purchased the same. I believe the 24kg roughly equates to 52lbs. Sorry for the confusion but that was why I described them that way.
Snatch is easily my favorite movement but getting the grip right is crucial. I'm still struggling with it not ripping my hands open. Met with a SF coach last month for a one-on-one session to work on it and I think I have the idea now. I wouldn't be upset if you had a short video focusing just on the problems people have with the snatch grip and why they tend to rip their hands.
I love the KB snatch. I recently regained enough strength (after a couple of abdominal surgeries in 2022) to enjoy it again. It makes me feel strong, good cardio, just a FANTASTIC workout.
I don’t remember a single video of Mark after which I finished watching it I wouldn’t think “damn, once again I learned so much!” Thank you Mark. Thank you for doing all of these.
I know I may sound like a broken record (yes, I am from that era 😂) but I love how much USEFUL detail you pack into your relatively short videos. Thank you Mark 🙏
It's all about builidng volume. If you can snatch 10kg for 3 sets of 10 reps, try doing 5 sets of 7. Then 6 sets of 6. Then 5 sets of 8. Then 6 sets of 7. Then 5 sets of 9. Then 6 sets of 8. Then 5 sets of 10. 6 sets of 9. 7 sets of 8. 6 sets of 10. 7 sets of 9. 6 sets of 11. 7 sets of 10. 9 sets of 8. 7 sets of 11. 8 sets of 10. 7 sets of 12. etc. Just gradually build up lots of volume. If you go from 3 sets of 10 to 10 sets of 10, bump up the size of your bell. You might do a workout like that 3 x per week and bump up a level once per week, or once every 2 weeks if the soreness really accumulates.
Felt like a champ when I taught myself the snatch with your earlier videos. Still want that exact shirt you have on to show up in the Merch part of your site. Maybe in time for a Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas/Valentines day gift to myself.
Great video, this is probably one of the best fundamentals video I have seen for technique on any exercise let alone one as important and as technical as a KB Snatch. I always say a kettlebell is the only thing that will make you stronger and better at things your not practicing.
It's been a while since I've snatched a kettlebell. I need to rotate it back into my programming. I should probably start working towards a clubbell snatch too.
The one kettlebell exercises you don't talk about is a crossbody swing but in the back of you like a low swing in the back of you that ends at the side of you and can be transitioned with a low pendulum swing in the front across you.
Would you make a video of punch through technique to help people visualize the hand transition timing for snatch? Or would that detract from forming a good technique?
Who doesn't love Snatch? As an old surfer, it builds all the right types of strength and conditioning as well as range of motion and coordination. Generally however, i don't like more than 20 kg. More muscle mass comes with to much metabolic cost. It just costs far to much oxygen to paddle around in big surf with big muscles 🥷
Feet straight ahead sounds good, but now I have found the painful reason why my foot points out to the side, I discovered I have a hip impingement that now needs operating on, so check the nature of the joint before changing it
I am recovering from a frozen shoulder, almost got complete rom back - just limited in the last part of external rotation. Would like to try this, and I do have a 6kg bell. But still a bit nervous about trying it.
Thanks Mark. Great as always. I recently started doing snatches recently (wouldn't have been comfortable to do this at heavy loads without your help learning cleans / clean and press / then shoulder mobility with clubs). I find that as the weight gets heavier (for me anyway), my heels start to come up on the hip snap. Is this something I should actively avoid? I find that it happens naturally and doesn't feel awkward.
Agree it's natural, for example a world class kettlebell instructor has the heel lifting ( more sports style ) for long sets, it exists. Always felt right for me, like a kick through the hip into the upward phase. I think in the same way Mark insists on the feet straight ahead for clubbell training ( for very good reason ), but with occasional nods to when this rule could / might get relaxed, you'd imagine the snatch ( hardstyle maybe ) could be trained by keeping the feet planted, but the aforementioned would suggest this wouldn't be sacrascant. That said, I'd wonder about an advisable approach when a complete novice, hardstyle versus softstyle, load, etc...
I've been doing a lot of kettlebells for well over 2 years, and what i can not get down with is inhaling at the bottom. I love the snatch, and my body wants to inhale on the pull and exhale on the way down. Same with swings (which i do not love...)
I just cant figure out how to not slam my wrist at the top of the snatch. Ive gotten better with the clean, but I'm beating my arms up with the snatch..
Holy crap, I think I get it now (only taken 2 years but whatever)... You always talk about how the KB goes "around" the wrist for cleans, snatches and related. It never dawned on me that we need to supinate the wrist; actively turn it outward on the "up" on these movements. F*** me. My wrists often getting hammered. Now I have something to focus on.
When we snatch,we should develop velocity to the bell..... we're not gonna be like sport kettlebellers.....i never get them, theirs snatches..... like,i even don't know..... probably, like a, like a merry-go-round???

You also have two different weight measurement systems, which is confusing.

@@scottburkhart6953 no worries - I didn’t know kb’s came in pounds!

Kat’s kettlebell dojo and Zack Henderson have very very detailed videos on how to do the Kettlebell snatch. I watched those many times until I got it.
I've worked with the guy from the channel Kettlebell Aerobics and he has a great video on the subject.

So stoked by this video! More kb snatch programing please.
Another well written and presented video. I’m now snatching 10kgs comfortably but cant see myself hefting a 16kg over my head….. thank you Mark.

TY Mark. Bring on the advanced breathing techniques - esp the double exhale technique you described years ago.
As ever, extremely well explained and demonstrated. Many thanks.
Such great instruction.
Thank you for posting.
Thank you. Your explanation is the best!
I have been waiting for this specific video. Thank you.
Thank you for this excellent video. You have the best kettlebell content out there. My appreciation 🙏

Any chance you'll release a snatch program soon?

Snatches supersetted with crawling could possibly be the ultimate workout. Hits the front AND back sides of the “X”.
The KB snatch is one of my all time favorite exercises. I currently do 4-6 sets of 10 with 24kg. When you say 200 reps is that per side or total?
not MW but the Snatch test (look up secret service snatch test) is 200 total in 10 minutes, you can switch hands as much as you want.
Total. You can switch hands in the 10 minute competition sets but not put the bell down.
@@brianhopkins5251 that's the answer I was hoping for!
3 seconds per snatch, that's not hanging about

i think the time has come for a MW "L to the L" hoodie with exponent notation.

Spend some regular time spinning some Indian Clubs to help with that return to full range of motion.
@@a.lame.username. I’m doing 360s with an arc, but maybe I should try some single arm with a light club
Be careful with clubs and maces if you have shoulder issues. Start two hand with a low weight.

Same. I'm pretty sure it's just physics. I'm not concerned about it.

Is there a slamball snatch? I don't see it in any of your videos or the actual slamball program. Would it be more of the shoulder catch move?

I just cant figure out how to not slam my wrist at the top of the snatch. Ive gotten better with the clean, but I'm beating my arms up with the snatch..
Kettlebell Snatch vs heavy club pullover?
Isn’t the getup much more difficult than the snatch? Also, I was setting down the kb when doing a clean-press instead of swinging. Is this Ok?
