"Dirt" might be one of my favourite sounding heavy rock records ever. I've be been obsessed by this album since I first bought it at the end of summer 1993 and its production has a lot to do with it. Thanx Mr. Jerden !

To enjoy the process of making music. That's it. I used to worry about recording a perfect take, but then I just gave up, hit the record button and play without worrying about playing a wrong note or something. The process needs to be enjoyable, and that's is the lesson from this video. Thanks for sharing this interview!

Man...Jane's is seriously the most underrated band in history. Their inspiration on musicians is undeniable but they never really got the credit or success they truly deserved. "Then She Did..." and "Three Days" are two of the GREATEST songs ever made!!! Fantastic album all the waythrough.

Remarkable interview; I & a bunch others partied & rocked our teens out in N. Seattle, King County & Snohomish County; I saw Layne's 1st ever performance at my Shore'weed' High School, a lunch hour break. He was fronting 'The Sleeze', appearance was as if a Lingerie store got nailed by a hardware truck. It was horrid, screeched & yelled thrash covers,
last song, 'Green Manalishi' & there was Layne's REAL voice for the 1st time in public. WHOA, where was he hiding THAT??! We'd burnt bowls together & talked music,
before things got 'dirty', & changed.
He really dug Rob Halford's voice, as much as I do.
Things splintered, I was a younger kid, so I didn't keep up much w/the harder party scene.
Layne & I got along fine, Jerry, um, let's just say he owes me a couple 6-packs. I could babble in, but as the casualty rate's been so high for the grunge brigade, I'm kind of glad I could only compose '80's AOHR....
That 1st album was superb, just raw as hell, captured phenomenally! I wish Jerry had continued his exploration more into the 'jangly' side, but as soon as he plugged into a MB 1/2 stack, it was screaming women & burning rubber from there on!
Andy Wood, Layne & Kim Thayil were 3 of the nicest, waaaay cool cats around; it was Thayil that turned JC into dropping &
    alt-tunings. Loooong time ago.
Before The Gap had our high water hand-me-downs priced ~2000% higher than our necessities!
They got signed not only by local popularity, but by a DIY cassette demo in a 10'x15' carpeted room.

Maybe my fifth or sixth time watching this. I can listen to Dave and Warren talk forever. I know it’s an old one but, 👍 Warren.
Side note, my mentor passed from a heart attack about 6years ago. He was so crucial to my development. He made me think about things after mistakes were made. Always he would say , “a mistake can make or break any song.” Miss the guy to the end of the world. Rip Talon Calvert. I hear my teacher’s voice when others say his words. So cool to hear Dave say the same. 🍻

Amazing interview. Dave is one of my favorites. what he said here 16:00 about capitalizing on mistakes, experimenting has been key to any of my success (which has been minimal) but it has helped me grow as a musician, a engineer, a producer. Dave really is "all about the artist". he recorded my friends band (Drop Box = original guitarist in Godsmack) nothing But great things said about him. thank you Warren.

I saw an interview with Steve Vai and he had a job with Frank Zappa transcribing music and he was talking about Frank Zappa's perfect pitch. The tweezles reminded me of a seminar, I went to in the late '70's for Fostex, right when 4 track on cassette came out, this guy (I forget his name) was the engineer and he said the whole time Brian Wilson was singing he was rocking back and forth on the stool and it was squeaking. The engineer took it out and Brian said something is missing, It was that squeaking stool. The Engineer put it back and if you listen real close to the original you can hear that squeaking stool.

I've enjoyed this so much I would've liked it to run for hours.... I'm sure I'll watch it many times.... Thank you.... Talking about collaboration... uff... " who's gonna play drums"... "I'll do that" "oh... you're a drummer?" "not really but I can play..." "I see... well... what about bass.. do you have a friend who plays bass?" "nah.. I'll do it..." and so forth with everything else... so this video reinforces my belief that it's so important to learn how to delegate in any music production and enjoy the contributions of great talented musicians out there locally that can bring fresh ideas and experience into a project ... wanted to share that with you all.... loved the video... awesome..

Dave mentions the Rokkit speakers, because of the "warm" and "chewy" sound of them.

Jack Leyton. I found it interesting when you guys were talking about Fracture and taking random beats to inspire. Im not familiar with the plugin, however when I get stuck for inspiration, I have always taken a ping-pong ball and given it a throw on the hardwood floor and the beats that it comes up with are always different and Ill inevitably find a bet that I like which I can translate into a melody or song.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned already, but, speaking of mistakes, the "seagull noises" in "Echoes" by Pink Floyd were created by plugging the guitar to the output of the wah. Another great one was "Roxanne" by The Police when Sting accidentaly sat on the piano during capturing the vocal performance. It can be heard in the very beginning of the song. Mistakes make for memorable moments in music. :)
(Damn, that alliteration in the last sentence...)

There's no doubt that Joy Division wrote some truly fantastic songs and if you trace their rise it's astounding how much they progressed in such a short period of time, but they wouldn't have sounded like they did without Martin Hannett, he's probably the most influential producer of that period. He in turn owes much of his success to the people behind AMS who he collaborated with, if they hadn't produced the first digital delay and reverb units there's no way Joy Division would have sounded like he imagined they could. There's very few producers who are that important in the band's recorded output.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 років тому

Hi +grizcuz Thanks for the great comment! Yes I think Martin Hannett's Production particularly of course the drum sounds is very unique and challenged the traditional ways drums had been recorded! Along with Producers like George Martin, Martin definitely was someone who was a huge part of the bands sound! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

+Produce Like A Pro Thanks Warren. Great conversation in the video by the way. I'm gorging on all your fantastic videos at the moment. It got me thinking about producers who were vital in the band's recorded sound. Obviously, George Martin and the Beatles is a major one like you say, then Eno's importance, around Bowie's Berlin period, seems to get mentioned really frequently. I suppose Sam Phillips/Sun Studios was where it all started, but there has to be other producers that are inextricably important in a band's output?
I'm trying to think of musicians who wouldn't have sounded like they did without a certain producer at the helm, often in a particular studio. People who had a 'signature sound' that you could detect within the first few bars of the track, like Spector's 'wall of sound' but they're not coming easily to mind at the moment.

HI +grizcuz Thanks for your great comment! I'm a HUGE John Leckie fan!! I feel he is able to get the band to sound like themselves, he doesn't impose himself on them but they always do their best work with him! For instance the Stones Roses first album, Kula Shaker and of course The Bends by Radiohead. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

+Produce Like A Pro Absolutely! He produced some of my favourite The Fall albums in the 80's as well. He doesn't get nearly as much recognition as he deserves. His credits are breathtaking, it'd almost be easier to list the bands he hasn't worked with. Alongside Leckie; Alan Moulder and Flood produced practically every great UK [and quite a few US] 'alternative rock' LP from the 80's onwards.

The first song i ever technically finished was revolved around a lead solo that doesn't stop till the end and many mistakes made a lot of the melody. soundcloud.com/chaotic-sonics/sonic-evolution-beta . It's the first song i ever played all instruments on a midi keyboard (except drums and fx) and my hands kept slipping due to just starting to play and having a condition with my hands sweating extremely which made is really hard to play. Out of every other song i started and worked only on programing in midi and not playing this is the only song that got finished and really has big emotion which i could never get if i didn't play instruments and especially mistakes from slipping out done out of being bored of playing the same thing over and over again to get it "perfect". This comment isn't about hey look at my track, it's a response to mistakes and random things do for a song and most important having fun being yourself in a song. Over looked by many because of the excessive need for perfection in music overall and holds music back from being what it could be. Perfection is really a result of digital that is hard not to fall into the "perfect" trap because of the option of being able to make it "perfect" whether it's mixing, mastering, singing, or playing an instrument which is the biggest thing everyone is struggling with starting out in music and are seen in many comments on forums or videos about working with music for a living.

So cool to watch this. Nothing's Shocking was one of the most influential albums ever for me. I'm sure Dave's input on that album had a big impact, it is a really intense sonic masterpiece and it's fortunate they worked together. There's still stuff on that album that I don't even know how they got that sound! He mentioned one of his favorite plugins is fracture. It's free it turns out, here's a link, can't wait to play with it. glitchmachines.com/products/free-bundle/

Brian Eno tried to stage an accidental erasing of "Where the streets have no name". The had spent a month on one song, and the tape has shed so much oxide due to the repeated overdubs that there hardly any high end. If you listen to any live recording of the song you can hear that he was probably right.

Gold star burned down early 80’s, by chance all the recording equipment was out to be serviced, they had 3 great echo chambers in the ceilings. Ken Rains who had work there told me, I used to sneak in there to watch them record bands when I was 14 or 15 they always kicked me out. Years later 1985 almost worked with Phil Spector, he was going to produce my band Easter.

It’s sad Perry’s insecurities broke up the 2nd era of Eric Avery Jane’s.
I believe Eric was serious about making JA great again and not just a type of Vegas act.
I saw JA live in 91, and again in 2016. While the band itself was tight, it wasn’t the same Perry. In voice and presence.

Due to the title, you'd think that this interview would talk more about Alice in Chains & Jane's addiction. Sadly it does not. This should not have been labeled as such. As Dave said, everyone asks how it was like to work with Layne......'at least' five minutes of this 30+ minute interview could have been about Alice! Disappointment.

Too bad Jerden burned every bridge he had with Alice in Chains. Facelift and especially Dirt were well produced but Layne swore he would never want to work with him again after clashing with him and the band multiple times (especially since he threw them under the bus during the production of Get Born Again with that Rolling Stone interview). The band has respected Layne's wishes and have not worked with Jerden since.
