Eddie Kramer is as much a record industry historian as he is a storied engineer and producer. Apart from his work with such names as Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix, Mr. Kramer is also a wealth of knowledge about the music business’s beginnings, which were discussed at length here.
In more recent years, Kramer has spent significant time working with the Hendrix family to restore old works and unearth forgotten recordings. At the time of this conversation, he had put the finishing touches on what will be the final Hendrix studio album, comprised much of what he considers to be “unearthed” material.
Kramer is also currently working to restore the famed El Mocambo nightclub in Toronto, where he resides. Most known for a surprise appearance by The Rolling Stones in 1977 (pictured below), he has been co-renovating the building into a two-level live venue.
It’s apparent that Kramer’s legacy extends well beyond being the “man behind the board” on some of rock music’s most celebrated recordings. From his photography to his restorative work in the industry and his knowledge of early recording history, Eddie Kramer is a man of immeasurable importance to rock and roll.

I can honestly say that Eddie is the most youthful 76 year old I’ve ever seen, throughout the interview I kept thinking he must have been 16 when her recorded Hendrix.
Hi Friends, Mr Eddie Kramer is as much a record industry historian as he is a storied engineer and producer. Apart from his work with countless artists now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he is also a wealth of knowledge about the music business’s beginnings, which were discussed at length in today's video.
Please leave lots of comments and questions on the video and I'll do my best to get back to you!

Best Eddie Kramer interview ever!
amazing video warren! Thanks for bringing Eddie Kramer and these amazing stories to us!
Thanks ever so much Want Appledumplings! He was incredibly easy to interview! Have a marvellous new year!!
Thanks very much Harmony! Agreed, Eddie's stories are truly wonderful!! Have a marvellous New Year!
Thank you man for all the quality you produce on UA-cam! Happy 2018!
It makes me so proud to hear you both speaking so highly about the beautiful country that I live in (Canada). To think that Eddie and I are approx 5.5 hours apart. And, I absolutely must agree that Toronto is a beautiful busting metropolis. I'm located in Montreal. Not too shabby either. At least we get to enjoy the F1 every year.
Peter Batah I’ve so many great times in Canada! Particularly Toronto! Wonderful country! Some of my best friends are form Canada! Have a marvellous new year! Thanks for being a huge part of our community!
We often think our music heroes were untouchable and on a pedestal but the way Eddie tells his stories you realise that these guys were just humans like the rest of us, just a tad more talented. Brilliant interview.
Craig Hunter wonderful observation! I agree 100%! Have a marvellous new year!
What a life Mr. Kramer has had!! Reminds me of the stories we used to hear while recording several albums with English producer Alan Shacklock (of Babe Ruth fame). Amazing tales of early tours with Aerosmith, recording Jeff Beck, Meatloaf, etc, etc. Thanks for taking the time with him (& all you do), Warren!
Eddie is a legend and warren you got such an amazing interview out of him! The best I've ever seen!
Hi Darlene, thank you ever so much! I feel blessed to be able to interview Eddie! Have a marvellous new year!
being influenced by Ace Frehley to pick up a Guitar myself....it was great to hear Eddie speak so highly of him...as i always thought that he was very underated as a guitarist....great interview
Yes! Ace is amazing! I have such an amazing time working with Ace!
HOLY GRAIL!
This is THE desert island interview.
At school, we used to multi-track with a Phillips cassette player and a roll of Sellotape.
Thanks ever so much!
They are people that talk for 5 Minutes and you have had enough Eddie Kramer can talk for 2 hours and your like that's it he is a true legend 👏👏
I hope this conversation continues and grows...a documentary of knowledge and stories....invaluable...such a joy...do it again!!thanks.
Eddie has mixed the best but always talks about Hendrix. That’s because creativity is a magnet. Hard to beat Jimi for creativity. And the greatest guitarist to ever live. Period.
Hi Paul, indeed! Hendrix was such a huge inspiration!! It was just also finishing up a new Hendrix release! Have a marvellous New Year!
I looked up the picture of Jimi and Mick and to think that this guy we’re watching took that picture is insane. The perspective of time from the 60’s to now is unbelievable
There is an incredible documentary about Tom Dowd. One of the coolest documentaries I have ever seen. Why they haven't made one with Eddie Kramer I don't understand. It would be even better for me because I am a Hendrix nut and when I was a teenager I lived for Zeppelin. Please someone make a documentary with Eddie while he still graces us on planet earth. This man has memories that millions of people want to hear and not just short You Tube video even though I have watched almost all of them.
I'm fascinated with the history of recording, so this was a very special treat. Thank you Mr. Kramer, and as always, thank you Warren!
Hi noisesoundtonevibe, thank you ever so much! Yes, it was a wonderful experience! Happy New Year!
I love the way this legend tells stories. Thanks Warren for being your brilliant self and fitting this in your schedule for all of us to enjoy.
Agreed, his stories are amazing! Thank you ever so much Cat andbeats! Yes, our schedules can be amazingly busy, but to make time to talk to Eddie Kramer is never a problem! Truly blessed! Have a marvellous New Year!!
I like the idea of recording with the effects before not after, for an inspired performance.
Can I just say thank you Warren.I loved this man since I was kid and to me he was a key member of every single band and musician he's ever worked with.I'm getting on in years now having been born in '57' but I'll always appreciate what he has done for the industry and what a great storyteller. It's a pity about the sound on this video or maybe a faulty tablet I've been using to watch it on.Some people read the back of cereal boxes but I still like reading and soaking up the sleeve notes on my vynyls covers and guess whose name keeps appearing.Cheers mate and have you tasted red label tea bags?
Thank you Warren for taking the time to do this! I really enjoy these long casual interviews. Thank you for not editing out all the good stuff!
Hi Bill Simpkins - Producer/Mixer/Engineer you’re very welcome! Agreed! These are exactly the kinds of interviews I love to do!! Have a marvellous New Year!! 2018 will be a great one for music!
Thank you Warren. Sharing this video with Eddie Kramer is the bomb. As you both were talking together I felt like I was being drawn in for the ride of my life. Each musical reference from Eddie brought me further and further back through the years. (I'm 54 years old), so I had a long gaping stare at my monitor for a few minutes. Hearing the "I was there" stories that Eddie shared with us was pure gold. From the very beginning "A long and winding road" to the SM 58's at Woodstock and then to Les Paul and the Ampex, I feel I have a deeper connection to the music and more understanding of the recording processes that helped shape and colour my life. A huge thank you to you both from Vancouver Island!
Thanks ever so much! I totally agree! My Kramer gave us si many huge prices of wisdom! I was blown away! Have a marvellous New Year!
it took me to 2021 to watch this. It was amazing. Thank you for loading this up
What?????? Rebuilding the El Mocambo!!!!.....WoW!!!!Eddie Kramer In Toronto.....
Yes Sir,.....reliving Toronto's Glory Days!!!
Yes! Amazing news!
Fantastic warren, thanks ever so much for bringing us this amazing Eddie Kramer interview! Like two old friends talking music!!
Thanks ever so much! That means a lot! Eddie is amazing to interview! Happy New Year!
Back in the early 1980's, MCI designed a 3" 32 track machine, but transport problems killed the project...Thanks, Warren, for all you do....
Wow! Thanks for that information! I never knew that!
Lets not forget the Stevens 2" 40 track that Roy Thomas Baker used on queen and the cars etc. I saw one in the mid 80s at No Evil in Washington DC.
I really enjoyed this interview with Eddie
Thank you for putting it on UA-cam
Hi Omnibot you’re very welcome! Have a marvellous day!!
Eddie Kramer! Clicked the link as fast as I could. Thank you so much for everything you do Warren
I agree Guitar5986! The same here for any of us who grew up listening to the albums he made! Thank you for watching! Have a marvellous New Year!!
I’ve listened to this at least 3 or 4 times on the podcast and learn something amazing with each listen. The Les Paul story has to be my favourite of the industry. Just wanted to say thanks so much for sharing!
Warren does not interrupt Eddie and just listens. Thanks for the art of listening Warren.
Thanks ever so much
Thanks Warren. This is a great interview with Eddy! All of us old school music industry guys certainly appreciate these stories from our heroes.
I hear you Kelly!! Have a marvellous new year! It's fantastic to be able to talk with Eddie who has experienced so much and is so willing to share that experience!
thank you so much Warren... if this interview went on for ten hours, i'd still be sitting on the edge of my seat!!
best interview ever|!
Con O'Connor that really means a lot! Thank you! Please share the video! That would really mean a lot to me! Have a wonderful and marvellous new year!!
Scott Ian from Anthrax said Mr. Kramer was putting reverb on everything during the mix and that he was trying to make them sound like Def Leppard. Slayer I think, was the first established metal band to stop the reverb trend in 1986, and other thrash bands followed suit. I wonder if he realizes that Scott was right back then despite them arguing so much about. Would love to hear more of the backstory with Anthrax.
Fantastic history lesson. I'd never heard the details of how recording technology came out of WWII. Thanks, Eddie & Warren!
Thanks ever so much
I’ve always been fascinated with Rock history. Absolutely amazing video. Thanks Warren - not sure how you got time with him, but very glad you did. Yes - there’s should absolutely be a rock history series - based on stories like these. Just wow.... Eddie, thank you very much for sharing these stories.
Hi Kevin Coulter I agree, 100%! I love the knowledge that Mr Eddie Kramer gave us! It was both fun, interesting and very informative! I’m extremely glad you enjoyed it! Have a marvellous time in the coming year!!
A mere 75 or so at the time of this interview...amazing energy.
Cape Town's finest.
I've watched a ton of interviews with mr. Kramer and I love watching him tell stories about his time with Hendrix and all that, but you asked the question I've always wanted to ask him: What do YOU wanna talk about?
Thanks a lot Warren, I had a marvelous time watching this.
Thanks Mauro, that's exactly what I wanted from this! Have a marvellous new year! I really appreciate your kind words! Eddie is such a wonderful guy to talk to! I was blessed to be able to get to do this with him!
Thanks Warren, this has been wonderful. Hearing Eddie talk with no nonsense. I could listen for hours.
Thanks ever so much my friend
Thanks so much Warren for your channel! As a guitarist and home recording novice, you have supplied me with so much priceless information and insight! It’s very much appreciated 🎸🎸🎸😄🤟🏻
I love your work Warren, it really means a lot to me ! This was obviously a great highlight in all the shows I have already seen! Thank you very much !
Thanks ever so much Niels!
Thank You Warren for this and all your videos. Hard to believe EK was involved with so many classic sessions. As others have said I could listen to this long an interview dealing with only one single session! Keep up the very interesting work.
I have the Les Paul/Mary Ford album with "How High the Moon"...incredible recording! Eddie Kramer how fantastic!
Hi Guitardudeguy TMark/Osh yes! Amazing!
Produce Like A Pro Hey Warren! We are still building on our home studio (limited budget), and I wanted to thank you for all of your DIY etc. Videos fantastic content! Wow, we need all the help we can get! Hardest thing is vocal tracks, we have great bed tracks. Having a hard time getting the right mics /preamps. We have great vocalists, just not getting the best results. Back to the basics I guess.
Great interview! Its great how some interviews go technical and others go background. Both are important to help us do our internship. And the bonus is when your interviewee is such a good storyteller with such a wealth of experience to share. I especially liked all the Hendrix insights which de-mythifies and builds his legend at the same time.
Hi Terry Doyle thanks ever so much! I really appreciate your support! Wonderful insight!
This is the third time I watch this interview, it never gets old. Thanks Warren for making these great videos!!!
Thanks ever so much my friend! I really appreciate it!!
I could listen to great programme material like this every day... wait, I do just that! Thanks Warren.
Fantastic! I could do more of these, every day! Have a marvellous new year!
Legend or not, he's a great guy, with the rare talent to tell stories in a very entertaining way and of course, he actually has al lot of stuff to tell. Amazing interview, thanks a million.
Thanks ever so much Peter! I agree! I had an amazing time!
Thank you Warren for the incredible interview with Eddie Kramer. I operate a small home Studio in London Ontario approximately 2 hours from Toronto. I'm looking forward to the reopening of the El Mocambo and the possibility of meeting Mr Kramer. Keep up the great work, I enjoy being subscribed to your channel very much and learning from your instructional videos and interviews. Cheers from Canada.
Always enjoy your interviews Warren. Thanks!
Was glued to this interview the entire time, thanx Warren !
Wow! Thanks ever so much!
It is always a trunk of experience to hear Mr Kramer. Thanks for this!
I agree Alberto! Eddie, was incredibly easy to interview! Have a marvellous New Year 2018!
I played my first show at the elmocambo when i was 15.. fast forward 10 years and i was a part of rebuilding it. i got to build the blocks- full circle. It was very cool chatting with eddie. He told me to send my music but ive been terrified to do so
Great interview! My band and I had the pleasure of working with Mr Kramer about 10 years ago on one of our songs, and it was a phenomenal experience. This takes me back there. :)
For all our sakes, please get with him as many times as you can, as the world as we know it may not see any of the likes of him and those that he worked with. For what this man has done, I for years poured over Jimi Hendrix recording, and to think he has unearthed yet on final album, big smile. Please tell him, Thank You for this and all he has done and will do. Over here we were called runners in england tea boys. But as he said, you observed. Al schmidt speaks of his uncle in much the same way. As always your dedication to this art will benefit us all now, but so many in the future. Namaste
Absolutely Wayne! I agree 100%! I would love to have Eddie on as often as I possibly can! This was a wonderful experience! Have a marvellous New Year!!
The Man- The Myth-- The Legend---Mr Kramer has to be one of the architects of modern music as we know it tday... Well done Warren as per usual.....
Thank you so much Timothy! I agree! He’s been involved in so many wonderful albums Have a marvellous New Year!!
Amazing interview with a legend! Warren you always get the best interviews out of people!!

Hi brad jones that’s wonderful! Congratulations on your job! Tell me more about your new studio. Have a marvellous new year!
Wow! Warren, that was the best and most interesting interview you've ever had. That's saying a lot because you have had several amazing ones. Thank you so much for all of the teaching and entertainment you give us, and thank you for the nice music you work on. Mr. Kramer, thank you for decades of musical gifts to the world. The stories you told about recording technology moving along was awesome. Your music recording has been unbelievable. God Bless you Chaps!
Marvellous Michael Davenport! I really appreciate your great comment! Yes, Eddie was amazing to interview!
"Brenda". Leave it to Keith to get straight to the point. Kramer has always been a fountain of the best info a mid-aged musician / self producer / home recorder like me can possibly learn from. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Warren. Eddie Kramer is one of my heros. (I'm pretty sure Keith is the one who got busted whilst leaving Toronto).
Thank you Piedscooter1! Have a marvellous New Year!!
You're so welcome! Yes, Keith saying Brenda is pretty hilarious! God rest Don Smith’s soul! He was a great guy and I learned so much from him! Have a marvellous New Year!
Where is the other 12 hours of this interview?
Aw shucks! I hear you! It was so much fun!! Have a marvellous New Year 2018!
Where “are” you mean
@@helmutsecke3529 That's typical German. Always go for perfection. Best cars, best audio design. Once I had a German friend visit and I was replacing my fuel hose from my VW with just a hose. For him that was out of the question so he drove me to the nearest garage to buy a real VW fuel hose.
Fascinating interview. I love the historical context. Wonderful!
Hi sndmann5 thanks! Me too!
That was quite the cup of tea Warren, thank you ever so much.
Hi Eventual420 that was the first he did! He came in and made us a wonderful cup of Rosie Lee! PG Tips!! Have marvellous new year!!
Absolutely fantastic! A must watch for all recording geeks
Thanks ever so much Chris!!
Such a great interview. I love all the stories. I totally get the back and forth between the mic audio and camera audio. I guess the mic was brushing against his shirt but you can't stop the interview. It goes with the package. I do this thing professionally and it happens occasionally with my news crews. Amazing work, Warren. Cheers!
I love how crap the audio is in this! Further proof that whatever is happening in front of the mic is the most important thing! Thanks for your continued commitment to delivering these great stories and pieces of information. Cheers!
This could have easily gone on for hours! How is this just one? I could listen to his stories for ages!
Thanks so much! Have a marvellous New Year!
Hi John-Paul Bader agree! It was so much fun!! Eddie is a true Gentleman! Have a marvellous new year my friend!
Absolutely wonderful. It goes to show how passion keeps you young.
Agreed! Thanks for the wonderful comment Steve! Have a marvellous New Year! I hope I stay that vibrant!! Passion is huge!
Thanks. This may be the best Eddie Kramer interview I've seen.
Thanks ever so much!
wow Warren what a start for the 2018 interviews vids...man wish there where more like him doing the same basic simple think...capture tha music that very moment and be done with it...commitment in sound...oh and that final statement...distance makes depth...godbless him!!!cheers
Hi dimoscondos you’re very welcome! I agree! I couldn’t imagine a better way to start the new year myself! Eddie is wonderfully relaxed and easy going guy who shared so much amazing information! Have a marvellous new year!!
Thank you, Warren, for the INCREDIBLE interview... amazing story after another amazing story...I wish it were longer. I can’t get over of the fact that Woodstock was recorded with SM58s only. Again, thanks for this wonderful video.
Thanks ever so much Steve! You Rock my friend!! Yes, I learned so much from Mr Kramer!
Great, great interview Warren! At 43:43 you asked about a legendary club on Queen St. I believe that would be the Horeshoe Tavern. Everyone from the Stones to Talking Heads to The Police played there.
Thanks Freddy! Yes, that rings a bell! Have a marvellous New Year!
One of the best Kramer interviews I’ve ever seen! Fantastic! When is part 2?
Hi Dan Pfeifer we shucks that really means a lot!! As soon as I can! Have a marvellous new year!!
Eddie is such a legend and as a live sound engineer, I have such respect for him and so many of the pioneering sound engineers, of every decade, but Jesus it doesn't make my job any easier when the artists have worked with these guys. I have been in the business for 25 years and started with pub house bands, and 25 years on I am working with some of the biggest bands in the world. for the love of working with a huge variety of artists and the challenges involved I almost exclusively work on festival tours all over the world (endless summer). when these guys have worked with legends such as Eddie, the pressure to even reproduce 25% of that sound live is a real accomplishment. Thank you for such great interviews, and not centering on "what is it like to work with so and so" but really getting down to the technique.
A True Titan of the Industry...Thanks Warren, and thank *you* Mr Kramer!
Thanks ever so much Steve!! Have a marvellous New Year 2018!
Questions? Don't be ridiculous... I'm sure we could all sit and listen to all those "behind the scenes" stories from people like Eddie for days and weeks on end - i know i would...
Hi KhronX agreed! It was an amazing experience! Mr Eddie Kramer was incredibly open and let us into such an amazing world! I feel blessed! Have a marvellous New Year!
What a truly marvelous interview/conversation. Spoken like true Ka-MON-does!! Mr. Kramer's rare anecdotes about Electric Lady studio and Les Paul himself are priceless!
Fantastic interview! So much history! Love when he says everybody learning to engineer should be sat down with real gear to gain stage, eq and compress going into a recording session rather than trying to do the fix it in protools thing everybody’s doing now - and then take it to to the DAW for mix down.
Loved this Interview!!!, specially the part about Ace, I have always wondered about Ace's personal recording studio in the 70's, the legend is that it was designed by Eddie Kramer in an octagonal shape, built underground with an amazing acoustic, very special and unique studio, they recorded Ace's solo album there.
Absolutely amazing experience ! Thank You
Super cool interview!! Loved watching this and all the great stories. Gave me some good laughs too
Thanks ever so much Eric! You Rock!
Loved it, some really great stories! Thanks for sharing Warren
Hi Jack, thanks ever so much! That's very kind of you!

Thanx Eddie 4 your time...This is Stellar...Like your discography
Agreed Patrik! I had an amazing time! Mr Kramer rules!
Love the interview , I got see Big Sugar in the 90's at Elmacombo 2nd floor and i thought the floor was going to collapse from all the people jumping to the groove, great to hear it is being rebuilt .
Thanks ever so much Troy! Yes, amazing to hear it's being rebuilt!!
I was listening to the podcast version of this video on my way to work this morning, and just happened to be driving past the old AMPEX sign on 101 in Redwood City when Eddie started the story about the Ampex tape deck!
Wow! That's an amazing coincidence!
"Help!" is my favorite Beatles film. Nice reference. ✌️
Hi David Paul nicely done my friend! Have a marvellous new year!
FYI a chap called Neil Brand has done a number of historical musical documentaries for the BBC, including recording as Eddie mentioned, it's called 'The Sound of Song' if I recall. Great interview.
Hi TheRealFieryBiscuits thanks ever so much for the great insight!!
Great interview ! Thanks Warren and of course to the legend Eddie Kramer !

Yes, indeed! Mr Kramer is a wealth of information!!
Wow. Amazing. I could watch you two all day. What a history lesson.
Thanks ever so much!!
Amazing!!! I love Eddie Kramer, could listen to him for days!
Absolutely fantastic interview!
What an interview !!! Amazing !!!! The funny thing though about it is that the audio is so full of bad miking, Pop`s and stuff that really makes you smile when Eddie raves about that fact that it is possible these days to dive into each scratch and fiddle out all the noises of Jimi`s recordings. So it leaves a taste of how recording was BRFORE the War...;+)
Just teasing, guys...Great interview ! So cool....All thumbs up Warren and Eddie !! When can we see Part 2, 3, 4... ?
Haha Eddie also started by making a point that the information/content is the most important thing after we talked about getting the lighting right! I take the best opportunities I can to get information to everyone! Have a marvellous New Year!
Just amazing the wealth of history and stories!!
Thanks very much Stephen!! Have a marvellous New Year 2018!
marvellous , could listen to this for hours.... please more Hendrix in the Studio ... how he worked THX
I agree! More Hendrix! Haha Can never have to much! Have a marvellous New Year!
Best interview I have heard. The next time you get someone with that level of history, record two lavaliers. On live gigs I always have a 58 on a 50' cord in the remote chance the lead Voc's 2nd wireless goes out. It's happened once. Great stuff . . amazing stories.
How do you set up an interview with one of the most influential audio producers in human history and manage to TOTALLY BUNGLE the freaking interview audio!!?? 😂 😭
THANK YOU FOR YOUR FANTASTIC WORK FOR THE AUDIO And Visual Community! GREAT Historical Insight. Thank You Both
Hi Troy, thank you very much! I am very glad to be able to help in any way I can!
