An idea for "waterproofing" the base of your bread bowl while adding flavor: After you scoop out the bread bowl, add a slice or two of cheese and toast the bowl (melting the cheese). Adding flavor while stabilizing the base of the bowl for a thin broth... Cheddar, Gouda, Parmesan-Reggiano - add what style fits your preference.
You just saved my New Year's Eve dinner. A good cheese adds value to just about anything, and it's a great way to keep the soup from getting absorbed too much. Going to try this right now. Thank you!
you mean get burned in the hand because of our impatient about how we treat our food .no i would rather let its cool down a little bit and enjoy my meal
Hahaha Funny how you say that! Some audio was turned down low. Really low lol Editing not on point my friend. Don't even get me started about not USING fresh clams... Canned fucking clams hahaha hearing my Uncle from Boston yelling " Learn how to cook, you fucking faker" Everybody knows to use Fresh seafood
I love Sam's style of cooking but is it me or does this chowder seem too thin? I love a thick, hearty bowl of clam chowder. I think some buttered roux would have taken Sam's clam chowder to a whole other level of tastiness.
And a buttered bread bowl. One of my favorite clam chowders was thick and in a buttered bread bowl. It was to commit crimes for. Literally. The place was closed down after a prostitution sting. Good clam chowder though.
Or just simmer it down a bit more. The sauce will thicken and parts of the potatoes will disintegrate making it even thicker. Never tried buttering the bread bowl! Great idea.

Can you do a video on your knives! You showed them briefly on your kitchen tour video awhile back. Something ASMR about them! Or at least your favorite ones? Also Max is killing the game on video, sound and editing quality! Dude doesn’t get enough credit!

I have loved clam chowder for almost 40 years (ever since I first tried it when I was around eight or so), so I'm excited to make it myself. Never used (or made) a bread bowl before, but I do find the idea intriguing. I have to point out that I agree with some of the other comments stating a preference for nice and thick clam chowder, so I'll have to find a way to thicken it up. Also, because of my severe onion allergy, I think I'll substitute mushroom and garlic to enhance the texture and flavor. Still, I can't wait to take a crack at this! Thanks for the great recipe and the awesome video, Sam!
Best soup in bread I ever had was Zurek near Krakow in southern Poland about 20 years ago now. You've inspired me to try and not only make this great dish but also recreate a Polish dish in my back yard here in Holland
This looks good! I think I’d like mine a little thicker so I’d try adding some flour after the sauté stage (almost kind of like a roux) or add some corn starch later, or just give it more time in general at a low simmer.
What a coincidence, earlier today the thought came to me time to make some clam chowder, then hours later your video pops up :-). Great looking chowder, loved you made your own bun. My suggestion is every time you cook up and need bread or buns as part of recipe make your own. Your 100 times the cook I am, I make all bread and buns for hot dogs, hamburgers, dinner roll, French bread then into garlic bread. I find when bread and bun making its super helpful to have a food scale, makes easy to portion right size, 100g for regular hotdog, 120g for larger smokies, ect. Another tip is for bun small and larger like the ones you did is as your forming ball like you did, finish with grabbing bottom and twist with screwing motion then squeeze everything tight on bottom so no gaps. Love your videos, love it that no matter how traditional the recipe your not afraid to throw a curve ball and make it your own with slight changes or additions.
I live in a condo with no basement and I always wear gym shorts. That way when I comment, I can do so with full credibility. I'm not really a comment guy, in that I don't care what anyone else says because they aren't me and can (and will) speak for only myself. However, I do invariably notice the first few comments, which are usually the most "liked" at the time. I have never seen any of these asinine, negative comments that Sam mocks so well (and so often...). My point is, what is the purpose of putting any time or effort into even tacitly acknowledging the extreme minority of people viewing these videos? It seems stupid. I am not a professional chef. I'm a guy, with a small kitchen, shitty tools, and a few things I bought because Sam recommended them. These videos are not for the professionals, these videos are for the shitty wannabe home chefs who do the best they can, screw up a lot, and still want to make good food for ourselves and our families. So if there is one or two comments, in the sea of text under a Sam video that point out some stupidity that is in actuality the very reason many of us keep coming back, PLEASE do those of us who love these videos a favor and don't waste precious video time commenting on them. It's beneath you, it's boring to us, and all it does is give these morons a false sense of credibility that they otherwise should not have.
You may not see those comments but Sam senses them like gaydar 😂 just kidding but Sam has been doing this for a long time and with anyone on TV or has a show on UA-cam they are gonna get haters, just look at all the thumbs down on any popular UA-camrs channel and you'll see those people Sam is talking about.
That looks absolutely great a nice wintery dish for the season. I prefer the New England style over the Manhattan-style chowder. The bread bowl technique is also great for holding a cheese/spinach dip with some lump crab meat and Old Bay seasoning with garlic bread.
Sam was not baked in the making of this video, just the bread was! LoL just wanted to say made this tonight just up scaled it to feed 7 and it was amazing the flavor was like and explosion in my mouth Thanks Sam
HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎊🎆 2021 Chef Sam!!! I wanted to say THANK YOU FOR YOUR AWSOME VIDEO AND RECIPES for CLAM CHOWDER!!! I just finished cooking the 🥯 bread bowl and New England Clam Chowders my husband said WOW!!! It’s PERFECT!!!
Props to the editing. It really is 50% of the video bring great. You need a great host. And editing. Like its alive with brad leone, that show is golden, and the editing is what makes it great! Great host + great editing=greatness
An idea for "waterproofing" the base of your bread bowl while adding flavor:

Adding flavor while stabilizing the base of the bowl for a thin broth...
Cheddar, Gouda, Parmesan-Reggiano - add what style fits your preference.
Ehh but that adds an entirely different flavor to the specific flavor that is clam chowder and completely alters it’s molecular composition
lmao jk but ya cheese changes the taste so nahh lol
And the Cholula hot sauce Sam added in the video doesn’t??
I was just offering a variant, not a “fix”.
I like it! Great idea.

Salty Salt because we just do

Since it's for seafood (clam chowder) , add some dill. Then you will have a Dill dough.
