I read personal memoir of Guy Sajer, The Forgotten Soldier, who was conscripted into the Grossdeutchland Division. Miminoux was his real name and he was of mixed German and French parentage from Alsace. He was conveying his personal experience and not a detailed history. It is well worth reading.

I read the book It was very good. You almost can feel the hanger and cold that those soldiers have to fight in Easter front.
From February till August 1944, including the important but mostly forgotten 2nd battle of Targu Frumos, the Grossdeutschland Divison was commanded by one of the best German generals during the war - Hasso von Manteuffel.

There was 1.3 million drafted and 2.4 million volunteers between 1935-1939 and obviously Grossdeutschland didnt have 2.4 million volunteers so no there was many volunteer units more than conscript units it wasnt until very late in the war that conscripts outnumbered volunteers so you're making things up 😅
that is not correct at all, you coould volounteer for any unit at the age of 17 and had a good chance of becoming exactly what you asked them to be
my great uncle voulunteered for the paratroopers and would have gotten the spot no problem but the luftwaffe recruiter asked him to consider becoming an airplane mechanic as he already was an electrician, probably safed his life
My father was part of it from day one. He said it was pure luck that he survived. After many injuries, including serious ones, and to escape having to endure another winter in Russia, he signed up for officer training back home. After being wounded again in Romania, his active participation in the war ended at the end of 1944 in a military hospital in Salzburg.
Read the book "Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer for details as he fought in most of these battles. It is the best WW2 book I have read. Very personal, very real, you can't put it down.

Their faith in final victory and in their homeland never wavered, their motivation remained the same until the last day of the war. They fought for the destiny of Europe. I congratulate you on your work, and for this video which is really well done and full of details.

Very good presentation, thank you! In the early time of the war it was an elite unit but the constant need of replacements must have made the unit less elite. The same faith must be valid for the other Nazi-Germans elite units.

I met an old German veteran of Grossdeutschland Division. Remarkable man; one of the few survivors.
They were trapped in East Prussia with their backs to the sea. I believe a few escaped. A sad ending for one of the best combat units to ever exist.
Finest Army in history. Took the world to beat them.
Certainly one of, among Napoleons army, Roman army and the Mongols.

Up to 1942 when it became a division the regiment "Grossdeutschland" maintained very high standards. Aspirants should measure at least 1.75 m and have perfect eyesight. These were the same requirements for the members of the Waffen-SS until 1942. The volunteers for the "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler" should measure at least 1.80 m, but this requirement was abandoned after 1942 due to the great losses and the expansion to a division.

One very interesting detail is that the regiment lost nearly 1200 men in the campaign of France, which was a third of the strength of a German infantry regiment in WW2 which traditionally consisted of 3.000 men divided into 3 battalions of 5 companies each. This proves that the hateful myth that the French soldiers surrendered without a fight is a lie.
the French campaign was much more nuanced than most ppl realise.. the professional French and British units stopped the Germans cold when given a chance. the Germans achieved breakthrough thanks to overwhelming strength in attack, with large armoured and air components. a lot of the French units encountered around Sedan etc were "B" divisions, reservists called up with little or no training in years. they were poorly armed and without close support from artillery or armour. the French leadership were the number one reason for defeat, the Generals gave up almost as soon as Germans broke through at Sedan. the French pm rang Churhcill to tell him France were beaten - Churchill couldn't believe what he was hearing and replied "surely not so soon??". but the will to resist was lost at the top. defeat became The French were slow to comprehend that Hitler was not like the Kaisers, he was "Genghis Khan" not Wilhelm I .. an armistice would bring occupation and persecution...

I too read "The Forgotten Soldier" . By the time I finished reading all I could think was ' How did any of those brave men survive that ordeal ' ? It is well worth reading .Sajer did survive along with his dear friend Hals.
I would argue Panzer Lehr was more elite especially by 1944. But great video mate!

These elite units if general von manstein or guderian were commander of german army, could brought the eastern front at least to a draw by mobile defence and defence in depth and could bled soviet to death. Also could force the western allies to pay much more prices compare to they already paid. But hitler's stand fast orders and dismissing his brilliant generals gave the allied the best chance and fastest way to defeat the german army. That's why allied didn't assassinate hitler by their special forces.

This guys never read a book in life, or if has, it's been one of those "Memoirs", by someone just like Manstine or Gudarian, whose excuses on why this or that engagement or battle wasn't one, was because of "the mad Hitler myth" ... "if Hitler wasn't a madman an just let me conduct the operation the way I would have liked, we would have won the whole War I tell you!!"
And all those "stop" orders!! All those "to last Man, and the last bullet" holding actions we were meant to undertake, Hitler was MAD I tell you, MAD!!
And THATS the only kind of book that guys ever read.
Fellas, remember this in the beginning.Hitler had all victories. The German high command thought he was crazy or just lucky. So, up to the point of the Russian campaign, the guy was never wrong. Even the general staff started wondering. Is this guy a genius or just lucky? After every country they conquered, the German high command were in agreement to take a break retool reform. He said no, keep going. He ended up being right about everything except Russia. You can count Great Britain as being wrong. But he didn't attack them because the Air Force lost, so they were just stuck on an island they were basically harmless to him. In the beginning of all the wars, the German high command was definitely inspired by Hitler to some degree, whether it was luck divine intervention, they didn't know.
