Thank you for your very informative background on von Ribbentorp. As an aside may I indulge you, and your viewers, with the story of my grandfather's efforts on behalf of both of the warring sides of WW2. His name is William Preiswerk and he was the military attache at the Swiss embassy in London. From the outset of war, the Swiss moved their remaining diplomatic corps into the evacuated German Embassy. My grandfather took over Ribbentorp's office. Throughout the war he flew with the RAF to neutral Lisbon, from there to Spain, across the Pyrennees - coercing on his way a farmer to using his horse and cart. He would then meet army officers of the Wehrmacht to discuss the treatment of Allied POWs, (whether they were receiving Red Cross parcels) on an airfield grass apron in occupied Europe. Return to London and go about following up on the welfare of Italian POWs held in the UK. His Swiss diplomatic passport, with so many visa stamps in it, is a testimony to this very dangerous logistical mission(s) - the welfare of POWs on both sides. He was also witness to the aftermath of the Katyn Woods massacre. When he learned of the final surrender of the Nazi regime, he went into his (sequestered) office, and broke into Ribbentorp's cache of vintage wine stored there, uncorked the best and toasted the Allied victory. Thank you for this video Mr. Felton for clarifying exactly why that flag was used because I know a lot of people will be triggered, and wondering why it was used on British soil.
The style of the house is very similar to many houses of the era found in Berlin, in particular in Dahlem. Unfortunately the architect was not mentioned. Some that have built similar to the style are Fritz August Breuhaus (de Groot) and another being Bruno Paul.
Fascinating as always. May I add that Ribbentrop expelled the owner of Schloss Fuschl (later world famous in the Sissi films, where it stands as Possenhoffen), a monarchist who was arrested by the Nazis. Ribbentrop and his wife were despicable. It is important to remember to monarchist politicians were persecuted by Nazis.
von Ribbentropp visited a stately home near me called Mountstewart. He visited in 1936 with SS bodyguards. By sheer irony Churchill stayed their on occasion too.
There is a statuette of a stormtrooper on display, it was a gift from von Ribbontropp to the Londonderry family. I was told that he went sailing on Strangford Lough while there. He fell overboard and his hosts had to fish him out.
It's British ritual. The flag is flown when the lord of the manor is in residence. It is only natural that a German official would fly the official German flag.
@@joeswampdawghenry If he had really sought a country hideaway, he could have skipped protocol and told his neighbours he was the nice Swiss wine merchant Ron Vibbentrop. But then, he was a pretty status driven type and couldn't live without the "ambassador's residence" tag on his house.
Nice presentation Mark. I noticed that in the current photo of Kingswood, the lower story shades were pulled so as to keep "prying eyes" from looking in. An expensive place to live in.
His son Rudolf von Ribbentrop was educated at Westminster school in central London. My grandfather recalled him as an arrogant piece of work who was driven around in the German embassy limo!
I'm surprised this didn't mention that well after war was declared it was discovered that Von Ribbentrop's sister was still living in the house! A few years ago myself and a friend visited the building off Pall Mall that had been the German embassy during the Nazi era. Tropp had spent a small fortune renovating it following his appointment as Ambassador. Today it is the headquarters of some trade association. We asked the receptionist if she knew the building had been the pre-War German embassy. "Oh, yes," She replied unphased. "And is there still a room here with a mosaic floor that features a huge swastika?" we asked. "Oh yes. That's still there" She replied. "But we've covered it with a large carpet!"😂
THANKS Professor Mark for filling us in on the full story of Ribbentrop, who keeps popping up all over the place in Third Reich history. He even inspired the character of the ambassador Baron Richter in the 1969 movie "Battle of Britain" !
The Tour of Buckingham place you did Mark was pure gold, I’m Scottish born and bred there’s a lot of history regarding the Nazis and the Irish during the 2nd war up here in the west coast of Scotland. @@AtheistOrphan Yea, it's right at the corner at the end of my street. The old couple living there are quite a nasty bit of work. People in the neighbourhood treat them with quite some scorn.
A classic and well-known example ofJoachim von Ribbentrop's buffoonery took place in Durham Cathedral, in 1936. As the organist struck up the hymn 'Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken' in the version that is identical to the German national anthem. Thinking it was a nod to his visit, Ribbentrop stood up and gave the Nazi salute. His host, the 7th Marquess of Londonderry had to ask him to sit down (no doubt pulling on his right arm).
A number of years ago I came into possession of a autographed postcard type of photograph of the son of Von Ribbentrop. Very interesting video, I love these glimpses into the past with Mark Felton.
Yes, his performing of the Nazi salute at his audience with the King added to this reputation and caused a great deal of eyebrow-raising in the Palace. 'Sans souci' translates as 'without care'.
Very interesting. Ribbentrop as a matter of fact infamously screamed at our American diplomats when Hitler declared war on the United States on December 11, 1941. After reading the war declaration, he thundered "YOUR PRESIDENT WANTED THIS WAR, NOW HE HAS IT!" before storming out of the room. Definitely one of the more dramatic moments of World War II, at least diplomatically.
My parents (Jewish antique dealers) sold antiques to his grandson at Camden Passage antique market in London in the early 2000s. His grandson paid with a Coutts Bank check, arguably the most prestigious bank in the UK. It was only then that my father noticed the name. He said it felt like blood money.
I continue to be fascinated by this channel. Although it was a frightful, dark, time in History, your videos give surprising new facts to me and I’ll watch them several times. I appreciate all the work which goes into your work. Brilliant.
Never really understood why Ribbentrop was executed when Speer was spared. Ribbentrop was an ambassador and just did what ambassadors are supposed to do.
After his ambassadorship, Ribbentrop was Foreign Minister for seven years. Hitler noted that while his other advisers were cautious and he had to "blow them up," R always went for the most extreme position so H could relax. The Nuremberg Tribunal found him guilty on four counts: crimes against peace, planning a war of aggression, war crimes and crimes against humanity. He played a large part in the Anschluss and the invasions of Czechoslovakia and Poland. He facilitated the "Final Solution." Those who committed atrocities in France and Denmark reported directly to him.
You are joking aren’t you? He was much more than just an ambassador. He was for a war with Britain. He encouraged Japan to attack the U.S.. He was heavily involved in the ‘final solution’, the murdering of 6 million Jews. He was a war criminal.
Re Ribbentrop getting his von, when living in Germany back in the 80s, it was not uncommon for my Dutch toponym last name of Van Zandt to be misheard as von Zandt. When members of the older generation heard it this way, they would often ask, "Sind Sie Adliger, Herr von Zandt?" or are you a nobleman, Mr. Van Zandt? This would happen with such regularity that one day I replied. "Ja, ich bin ein amerikanischer Adliger. Ich bin lesens- und schreibensfähig." This translates to "I'm an American nobleman. I can read and write." Needless to say, this quip raised a few eyebrows.
@@46FreddieMercury91 Yes, the noble courts provided a better venue. I believe he blew it when he said, “Wäre ich Adliger” or “Were I a nobleman.” What? You’re not?
I lived in Pinner growing up in the late 70’s / early 80’s. A school friend who’s father was the ambassador in the UK from Siena Leone lived in this property which at the time was still called Sans Souci. At a large house in Broomfield, near Chelmsford, von R met the owner, a Mr Duffy, devout RC, at least once, pre-war. An aunt of mine was in service there and didn't take to the visitor at all. I was told this many decades ago and never enquired any more about it, but the meeting seemed odd somehow . . .
Point of order, Mark... Ribbentrop arrived to take up his position in October 1936, formally presenting his credentials to Edward VIII on the 30th - not to George VI
Good point. Edward VIII would have appreciated being greeted with a straight-armed salute. There are videos here showing him (as Prince of Wales) teaching the salute to his nieces Elizabeth and Margaret.
I was not aware that Von Ribbentrop was a former German ambassador to the U.K, and his house was based in Pinner. It's a large, but a characterless home. Thanks again Dr Felton for your very informative videos of the WW2 period. 😮
Goring asked Hitler why he made Ribbentrop ambassador to England because he was a jackass and unqualified, Hitler said it was because he knew a lot of higher echelon people in England, to which Goring said "Yes, but the problem is that they also know him".
They unnecessarily stripped all the character out of the house. By removing the Nazi motif from the entrance and the large flag pole flying the Nazi Swastika flag
Thanks for the video about this man. As usual when I was growing up I thought that the foreign minister was just a small fish that had clean hands. None of these people had clean hands.
10:28 The irony of it is it’s still looking better than 99% of British houses and will outlive them by decades. Just an architect opinion after working 20 years in the U.K. Excellent content Mark.
Perhaps you're capable of explaining why Brits are so reluctant to modernise their houses? Rather damp, mold and expensive heating, than insulation and a comfortable living 🙄
Quite possible that you may find such a villa in Munich's "Speckgürtel", but it's as foreign here as in North London: The architecture is very Hanseatic.
Apparently, WS might also have 'entertained' JvR at the London apartment she shared with her husband, Ernest. She certainly hosted Edward, Prince of Wales at that location, sometimes with her husband present in another room (nothing salacious - Ernest was prepared to turn a blind, knowing Edward was their main source of funds).
@@markroycroft unless Anne Sebba had access to the files held on the whole WS/Abdication/Marburg files that are being held under an extended 100 years rule, she would not have been in a position to state categorically either way. The fact is, none of us are likely to know with 100% certainty as we'll all be long gone before the files are made public, if indeed they ever are. However, although they couldn't get conclusive proof, the security services were 'rather sure' there was more to the relationship than just 'meeting at cocktail receptions' coincidences. One thing portrayed in The Crown in the episode on Marburg is correct: they started restricting what went into Edward VIIIths red box everyday as they were convinced early on (later proved correct) that classified and secret information contained within was 'reaching sources for which it was not intended'.
What a very chilling side to life, some people create, and having been born in 1946,to an Italian POW father, into extreme poverty that was mainly the result of 2 world wars, many chilling experiences have been part of my life to date. But I'm glad to be on the opposide side of anyone who's power crazed at any cost to the lives of others. The picture of von Ribbentrop adjusting his tie is perfect timing.
I’ve been sharing your videos with my brother, he loves them. This is another topic I don’t think has seen much attention. Thanks for another history lesson Dr. Felton.
Back in the '80s, I was one of the team who re-landscaped the back garden at this address!
Absolutely fascinating, Dr. Felton. Thank you.
I've heard clips of Von Ribbentrop speaking English, and he was wholly proficient. Very fluid without an overwhelming accent.
When did Churchill stay there??
@@wolfmaulerit was before he became prime minister.
There is a statuette of a stormtrooper on display, it was a gift from von Ribbontropp to the Londonderry family. I was told that he went sailing on Strangford Lough while there. He fell overboard and his hosts had to fish him out.
@@wolfmauler I believe that Churchill was a cousin of Lord Londonderry.
Ah yes, the Irish seat of the Londonderrys - well known 'fellow travellers' at the time!
Needs country house to escape relentless press attention in London.
Flies the swastika flag in the front yard whenever he's at the country house.
That's exactly what I thought
Not an issue.
Haahahahahahah.. It's protocol
It's British ritual. The flag is flown when the lord of the manor is in residence. It is only natural that a German official would fly the official German flag.
@@joeswampdawghenry
If he had really sought a country hideaway, he could have skipped protocol and told his neighbours he was the nice Swiss wine merchant Ron Vibbentrop.
But then, he was a pretty status driven type and couldn't live without the "ambassador's residence" tag on his house.
Hello and respect from São Paulo, Brazil 🇧🇷🇧🇷.
Where were you in WW2?
@@williamwilliam5066 Born in 1964
Incredibly well researched and presented generally little known history. Bravo!
Nice presentation Mark. I noticed that in the current photo of Kingswood, the lower story shades were pulled so as to keep "prying eyes" from looking in. An expensive place to live in.
Thank you Mark Felton, my favorite Historian!!
What detail. Fabulous.Thanks.
On a Sunday?
Instant 👍
Always a pleasure great documentary
I’ve heard small bits and pieces but it would be interesting if more about the partnership the Nazis had with the IRA? Great content.
Buckingham place?
Yep he was invited to (Mark) the palace Garden party, all the guests were treated like cattle apparently! Hilarious!
@@stevenwilson5737 - I just wondered where Buckingham PLACE was. (As opposed to Buckingham PALACE, I thought it was a different area or street).
@@AtheistOrphan Yea, it's right at the corner at the end of my street. The old couple living there are quite a nasty bit of work. People in the neighbourhood treat them with quite some scorn.

Imagine spending a couple of million quid on your dream house, only to find that it's the subject of a well known war historian's UA-cam video.
Excellent story
I'm surprised the Marquess didn't join him!
Well you can't blame the guy since the tune is identical.
Much ado about nothing.
@@GNMi79 It was a Hymm that sounds the same as the anthem
A number of years ago I came into possession of a autographed postcard type of photograph of the son of Von Ribbentrop. Very interesting video, I love these glimpses into the past with Mark Felton.
You never cease to amaze Dr.Felton! Great video!
Thank you for bringing these stories to us.
As to his occasionally inappropriate demeanour, the British nicknamed him Joachim von Brickendrop.
Yes, his performing of the Nazi salute at his audience with the King added to this reputation and caused a great deal of eyebrow-raising in the Palace. 'Sans souci' translates as 'without care'.
Goebbels did it even better: due to his nobility having accessed by marriage only, he humiliated him in nazi circles as 'Von Ribbensnob'.
Right arm zieg-heiling our King, for instance??
@@vilebrequin6923 It translates better as "Gay Abandon," at least if we are talking about Frederick the Great's palace in Potsdam.
Love your channel!
Brilliant.
Keep 'em coming Mark!
An informative and well-produced video - thank you.
Never really understood why Ribbentrop was executed when Speer was spared. Ribbentrop was an ambassador and just did what ambassadors are supposed to do.
So did Jodl and Keitel?
he was the foreign minister all through the war. Try to keep up
After his ambassadorship, Ribbentrop was Foreign Minister for seven years.
He signed the non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union in 1939. One would think that would have been a point in his favor. 😂
Ludwig Van Beethoven tried to use his Van as Von when dealing with court cases involving his nephew
There were stories of it belonging to the German Ambassador to the uk pre war and having been build with imported materials from Germany. Now i know it’s true. 😮
I sure wish we could have seen inside this place! Fascinating, as always Mark, thanks!

At a large house in Broomfield, near Chelmsford, von R met the owner, a Mr Duffy, devout RC, at least once, pre-war. An aunt of mine was in service there and didn't take to the visitor at all.
I was told this many decades ago and never enquired any more about it, but the meeting seemed odd somehow . . .
Sounds like a scene from "Remains of the Day".

Another wonderful and informative documentary . Thank you !!!
Superb content as always Mr Felton!
I was not aware that Von Ribbentrop was a former German ambassador to the U.K, and his house was based in Pinner. It's a large, but a characterless home. Thanks again Dr Felton for your very informative videos of the WW2 period. 😮
What did you think Ribbentrop's role in the III Reich was?
@@wolfmauler He was a British nurse
He said he was not aware that Ribbentrop was the German ambassador to the UK before today. Why do you want to know the views of a non-expert?
Goring asked Hitler why he made Ribbentrop ambassador to England because he was a jackass and unqualified, Hitler said it was because he knew a lot of higher echelon people in England, to which Goring said "Yes, but the problem is that they also know him".
They unnecessarily stripped all the character out of the house. By removing the Nazi motif from the entrance and the large flag pole flying the Nazi Swastika flag
Sir you have excelled yourself again, Thank you.
Thanks for the video about this man. As usual when I was growing up I thought that the foreign minister was just a small fish that had clean hands. None of these people had clean hands.

This house sold for about £2.4m in Dec 2022. The one next door apparently has/had planning permission for demolition and rebuild with 9 flats.
Love to know if this is the house where Ribbentrop was alleged to have been bedding Wallis Simpson. The dates match up.
A biography of Wallis Simpson - “That Woman” by Anne Sebba (2011) - states that there was no affair between Ribbentrop and WS.
And as I'm somewhat spiritually aware, I dread to think of what people like Hitler and Goring would have to face up to after death.
Thanks for your interesting video's. God Bless 🙏🏻💖
