just when I thought California administration couldn't be any stupider... literally killing the state. and then they want to wonder why so many people are leaving for greener pastures in places like Texas and Florida ..
Basing it on engine year is wildly arbitrary… i can drive my 2011, but not my 2010? It should be based on measured exhaust emissions like smog checks and nothing else.
New trucks produce more carbon bc they have to get the exhaust temps up past 1200 degrees in order to regen. Where’s the sense in idling your truck at 1500 rpm’s for 30-50 minutes just to create more carbon build up in the engine?!
There is NO way a lawsuit about this doesn't make it up to SCOTUS - California can impose these restrictions on internally-registered trucks, but how can it possibly prohibit out-of-state trucks without the consent of Congress? Only Congress has authority on interstate commerce.
Presumably, the large trucking companies already run newer, compliant equipment. If so, this is a boon to them. More freight to haul with less competitors. The losers being individual truck owners who have few options. Between AB5, which pretty much eliminates lease operators (some of whom own their trucks outright), and this, many truckers will be face the choice of leaving the industry or moving out of California. Neither of which are easy given the current housing and economic situation.
My engine was rebuilt 13 months ago and is CARB compliant. This sucks for me. But I think they will have to extend the moratorium. This WILL create a shit-storm unlike any other.

California is dead set on not having any owner operators. I guess the big companies are gonna take over. Plus the slowest truck speed limit in the nation, I don’t think I’ll be taking a trip there anytime soon. California needs to just become their own independent country.

California Lawmakers are ageist. These new California laws are prejudice and discriminatory based solely on age. Where are the diversity and inclusion liberals? It is very important to be able to have a diverse and robust fleet. It seems the LGBTQ+ community does not apply their rules evenly to everything. They are not really interested in inclusion are they. Older trucks were built to last forever. Older engines can survive an EMP attack. Older truck engines can operate without the dependence on complex electronics. There is a also a right to repair issue here. California law makers are setting out to erase history. These laws are no better than the Taliban destroying antient artifacts.
On one hand it's a bad time to be implementing this law, however they've had 14 years and they've known about this law so why are you buying a non-compliant truck? That being said I really do believe the governor should step in if he's smart move to the middle and give this another 3 years because of the pandemic that's my opinion.
The thing is, the truckers and companies have know about this for 14 years, and they've had 12 years to get in compliance. Instead, they wait till the last second, and throw up their hands and go poor me. That's why they gave you 12 years... There's no excuse. Comply, or don't operate.
The rule puts out of commission many older commercial trucks, which are still in operation. A lot of the trucks which were brand new at the time of the law passing, are not currently equipped with diesel particulate filter.. the cost to add the DPF approaches 10k-20k depending on the mechanical repairs needed apart from DPF AND and most trucks end up costing that amount used anyways, it’s like plastic surgery when your 80 years old, it makes absolutely no sense to make an investment like that. People did have 14 years to fix this, and most business owners I know who dealt with the issue simply sold their vehicles and took their assets with them to other industries or transport. most people are smart with their money, but more than anything the cost will go straight to the consumer, unfortunately, like always with most business, in order to have this law be fully complied with all truck in state of California….
Basing it on engine year is wildly arbitrary… i can drive my 2011, but not my 2010? It should be based on measured exhaust emissions like smog checks and nothing else.
You obviously don’t drive a truck. New trucks create headaches with the emissions system. Just a sensor alon can cost you upwards to $2000 to replace not to mention the down time on getting the sensor. Cow piss is what they say will cure the climate change. I think not. It’s all a big scam.
