- How to make a floating frame for paintings or photos. This is a fairly simple method for "Do It Yourself" floating frames.
A few folks have asked me about the strap clamp from Bessey. I bought mine from Hone Depot. Here is the link.

I would have liked it if you would’ve shown how you mount the painting inside that frame.
I should have shown that. There are a few ways to attach the painting to the frame. I drill holes in the back of the frame and insert wood screws that screw into the canvas frames. Just make sure the screws aren’t too long or they will protrude through canvas.
there are many vids on youtube making floating frames and r very complicated but this one is by far the easiest and the finished product is awesome!! i will make on following this. thanks you sir :)

I’m going to take a stab also. I believe you just add the quarter inch gap and the half inch width of the frame and come up with 3/4”. Times two -because you have that same distance on both sides. Now add that inch and a half to your 30 inch length. And you have to cut the length to 31.5’ and the width to 25.5”.
You can forget about measuring the angle at the corner this way. It’s just based on the width of the wood frame. Yours turned out fantastic and very glamorous. Love it and thanks for the video!

I just made a spread sheet to calculate all the dimensions including the expected diagonal square check. Im still testing it out. You can vary the gap, face width of the frame and thickness of the backer frame. I use 1/4" and 3/8" panels for my paintings. I cant say it solves all the numbers yet, but it reduces calculation time.

Hi, Ray -- Great vid. The easiest method I've seen so far. Would you mind telling me how you attached the canvas to the frame? Did you screw it in? Nail it in? Glue it in?
Thank you, Joyce. I’m glad you like the video. I carefully pre-drill through the frame into the canvas frame. Then I use screws.
Great video but it would have been nice to see how the art work was attached. If there is 1/4 inch gap, how is it attached?????? Glued on? How????
Sorry for the delayed response, Wanda. The one I showed in the video was glued. I have also used a 1”x 2” for the back of the frame. With that size you have room to drill through the frame and attach the painting with screws. I like this method better. Just be sure the screws won’t go through and pierce the canvas. I hope this helps.

Excellent video. My only comment is that with modern glues the wait time can be as short as 30 minutes.
You are correct. Often I use regular wood glue but also use my pin nail gun. Then I don’t have to wait long for it to dry. I do need to try some of the new glues that are available. Thanks for commenting!

But how did you fastened the canvas to the frame ?
@@edbianchi8839 Good question and something I should have shown. I drill a hole through the back of the floating frame and screw into the picture frame. Be sure to countersink the hole so the screw doesn’t scrape the wall. I hope this helps.

I am planning a project for a 4ft x 3ft canvas. I will do a floating frame, with obviously different overall dimensions from the one in this video. Would you modify your design for a scale up to this size? I'm thinking, not necessary. Agree? I have a big strap clamp also.
I’ve done a few different sizes an this design works fine for me. I’m making two frames for a friend right now. I have another video called “A tool for cutting accurate angles for frames” It’s a really helpful jig, if you use a miter saw.

Besides the miter saw, not every artist who wants to make their own frames has a dozen or more clamps. They aren't cheap.
Sorry you didn’t find value in the video. Clamps can be bought pretty inexpensively at Harbor Freight, if you have one near you.

Thanks for the comment. I use a pin nailer sometimes. It certainly adds strength. Particularly if you don’t get enough glue in the joints. Also, if you don’t use nails, you need to use the strap or clamps on insure a tight joint. The accuracy of the angles is very important as well. Do you need to add a dust cover on the back?
I never have added a dust cover. I’ve made several frames for an artist friend and I don’t she she does either. I guess it’s a personal choice.
Can you show a picture of the back and how the painting is secured inside of the frame?
I don’t know how to share a picture. I drilled a holes in the rear of the frame by the corners and used 1” wood screws to attach the frame of the canvas. This works great as sometimes the canvas frames are warped a
You can put the screws wherever you need them to get the frame flat.

How do you attach the painting to the frame?
I line up the painting and screw from the back of the floating frame into the painting frame that the canvas is stretched on in all four corners. I predrilled the floating frame so the screw slips through. Make sure your screw isn’t too long and won’t go through the painting.
What is the clamp that fits around the whole frame near the end of your video called. The frame looks great!
It’s a Bessey strap clamp. I bought mint at Home Depot. Here is the link.

So sorry for the late reply. Several comments just showed up. Any black on the frame was painted by me. You can just mask off the wood and spray paint what you want black.

Hi Audrey! I assume you mean the strap clamp. It’s a Bessey tools VAS-23 variable angle strap clamp. They are available on Amazon for about $25-$30. It’s great for gluing up frames. If that’s not what you meant, let me know. Thanks for watching the video! Ray
you never showed how you mounted the art in the frame
Pretty simple. I just drill a hole in the shadow box frame and insert a screw that attaches it to the canvas frame. Works great!

Glad the video was helpful. I’m pretty sure I bought it at Home Depot but sometimes I shop Lowe’s as well. There are two versions. One is the regular lattice. There is also another version that is a bit thicker with a rounded edge. In my store they are close together. I like the rounded edge better but it costs more.
