I love how both QFF and DGTC are sister albums. They are interconnected with many vocal samples and motifs. It’s the first I’ve heard something like this.
I love the fact Skrillex got hated endlessly for making "brostep" and not adhering to the classic dubstep sound, now like 10 years later he releases this, full of songs heavily influenced by early dubstep. It really brings his career full circle. Also plenty of reggae influences which again harken back to dubstep's origins. Reading Soundcloud comments hating on the minimal atmospheric more simple dubstep sound now is really some sweet irony from the old comments I used to read about how "Mehh this isn't dubstep" now it's "Mehh this isn't Skrillex" Also not sure you mentioned A Street I Know but I am a sucker for Skrillex vocal chops and that song fills me with joy, even if it's not that ambitious
As someone who hasn't listen to basically any Skrillex music in the past, And only knows him from the "Brostep" that made him famous, Hearing "Still Here" off this album was honestly quite refreshing, As it actually sounded good, And reminded me of styles I like such as UK Garage or the original Dubstep.
I do hope this is a return to him just regularly putting out music again, because at its best, this album is pretty stellar with top-notch production and low end.
any producer or someone who can appreciate quality sound design should listen to the track tears on that album. sleepnet is also so underrated and definitely looking forward to seeing him grow from noisia
I remember being 16 hearing Skrillex' remix of Cinema and being blown away by that type of sound... Always been a Skrillex fan that fully understood why he got so much hate but still loved his music, right now just happy to get more of his wub wubs
I'm a massive Skrillex fan, and started producing electronic music in 2011 when I was 15 because of him, which at this point is almost a trope of edm producers but it honestly demonstrates how innovative and impactful Skrillex was. I actually very closely agree with your criticisms on both albums, I actually agreed with virtually everything you noted. I think given the context of his hiatus (which he stated was from depression and introspection after years of neglecting his mental health) QFF is actually pretty solid. A ton of the records on that album have been projects from many years ago, and in a sense we're actually listening to a Skrillex from 3-4 years in the past. This does lead me to think of how a more developed Skrillex track after he regularly produces more consistently will sound, if that happens to be the case. In general I wish he was a little more adventurous with his sound design, which is the easiest way I can describe what feels lackluster to me. Beyond that I'm just happy to see him releasing again as well as being in a better state of mind. Edit: I just want to note that I'm happy he's doing his thing, but I actually cannot talk/listen/comment on the other album, it's either a) insanely bad, or b) not my cup of tea. It's more than likely some combination of the two, but o well not everything is gonna be good.
I'm in pretty much the same boat as you. QFF is good in terms of Skrillex releases and great in terms of current EDM releases, but part of me wishes it was a bit more 'wild', kind of like how SMNS was. Agreed though, it's great to see him still making music. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if QFF was already in the works around the end of Jack U. I like to think the DGTC album is more of a 'got to pay the bills' project than a passion project.
I really wish the album had more of a theme, like the artwork is so awesome and implies a particular epic nature that I don't think it had consistently. But I genuinely love so many songs on this album, and I hope Skrillex keeps going down this path.
Bruh I wish the artwork of this album and the ones from the singles that came from it were talked more about, it's pretty epic and I thought he would use that kind of artwork for music videos
Personally I don't mind Skrillex trying to experiment, sticking to the status quo doesn't seem that interesting (sort of like if Skrillex kept doing brostep). That said I do hope some of the DGTC stuff is not indicative of where his music is going in the future (Bad For Me is genuinely horrible imo).
The new Skrillex album has two feelings in my first impression. The first is that this album feels like it was the first time Sonny got a 12" bass or something because the sub on these songs is just perfect. The mix feels so clean. It has this minimalism to it that I find hard to fully describe. The second is how this makes me nostalgic for the early 2010s dubstep. I listened to Bangarang, Scary Noise, and Recess before listening to this album; and I found this to feel like similar music but without the hard edges of the previous albums. It goes hard, but it feels lost in the past, worn out by time, pessimism, and change. That's the kind of nostalgia I feel. It's what The Midnight feels like to me as well. All the harsh edges of the past have worn off on me, leaving me tired. 10/10 - Dubstep for Doomscrolling
Ngl I kinda appreciate that you uploaded this after the more negative review to leave it on a high note. Idk why, I just feel that's pretty cool. Kudos for that.
I loved skrillex as a teen when scary monsters and bangarang came out. I outgrew the whole brostep thing and edm and wasn't sure what to expect when listening to this, but the production is amazing. Like I was listening to it on my way to work and couldn't comprehent what the lower frequencies where doing with my ears.
I would not call myself a Skrillex fan but I have been listening to bass music pretty heavily for a bit more than a decade and I think this album is fantastic. It's rare that an artist in any genre can balance technical proficiency with raw emotion as well as is on display here. I want to give a bit more love to supersonic as well. Listening to it on my studio monitors for the first time was one of the most jaw dropping experiences I have had with music in a long time.
This album slaps imo on repeat listens especially. The vocal for leave me like this has been living in my head rent free since the Fred Again.. boiler room set.
I wasn't aware that Supersonic was a remix! That said, I still think the end result is really good, despite knowing it's not technically an original song
You could argue most of the songs are remxies, in the sense that a lot of the vocals are just from other tracks XENA, Inhale Exhale, RATATA, Too Bizarre (Juked) all use vocals from older songs!
@@Twtching Shit youre right. That's pretty interesting. Such is the nature of electronic music, i guess. Fans of skrillex are coming to this album for his production, and I'm happy there's a lot of effort put on that rather than the vocals or lyrics (good thing skrillex didn't make an album where the production plays second-fiddle to not-very-good vocal performances. It would be a shame if he did that)
I agree that it is not very consistent from track to track but I loved almost every song individually. Some of the songs were absolute fire. Hopefully they will come out with an album in the future that has a greater balance between good individual tracks and a coherent album experience. Still, knowing it is not perfect, I love this album for what it is.
I’m surprised he didn’t like it more than a light 7. This project sort of touched all the sounds he was known for while also trying out some new stuff with tracks like Xena. I really would like him and Fred to produce an album together because the flodan tracks and sound need a full project.
Supersonic is quite amazing in my opinion you should not relegate it in a generic dubstep zone because It just doesn't belong in that grey category but it is very complex and well put together.
1:18 - Leave Me Like This 1:37 - Ratata 2:14 - Tears 2:44 - Rumble 2:56 - Butterflies 3:25 - Inhale Exhale - A Street I Know 3:53 - Xena 4:23 - Too Bizarre (Juked) 4:43 - Hydrate - Warped Tour '05 with Pete Wentz 3:42 - Good Space 4:52 - Supersonic (My Existence) 5:09 - Hazel Theme 5:13 - Still Here (With the Ones That I Came With)
Still here is phenomenal and one of the vibeiest big festival tracks I've heard in a long time. Honestly such a refreshing listen that stays far away from all the boring ass tech house that everyone seems to think is so great.
glad you enjoyed (it is a good record) but I think its kinda lame how you just ignored almost all featured artist that aren't on the vocal side. these artists bring a lot to the table and are an integral part of the songs and the whole record - it's kind of skrillex' whole idea to be making music with his friends. people like joker peekaboo noisia porter robinson and everyone else actually are a massive part of this and essential to its critique, I think you could've wasted a few second to mention them at least
i feel like this wouldn't have happened with other genres? just because many of these artists may be outside the mainstream sphere of influence it doesn't mean they don't deserve recognition for their contributions
Oh so the set I saw he uploaded from his garage had songs from this? I'm gonna listen to it then. Because most of that set was INSANE! I loved Skrillex when he came out. Many were. But then I got bored... like many. And I just moved on honestly. I have phases with genres of music. It comes and goes and I simply embrace it at this point. But his recent video his uploaded of that set + this album review has made me wanna go listen now.
I was wanting a album from skrillex for forever. Quest for fire really fills that need. The album goes so hard and I’ve been listening to it all week in the gym. The other album leaves a lot to be desired but overall with quest for fire. I’m very satisfied
Absolutely. I do feel that you missed the incredible details in the sound design, mixing and mastering of this project. Listening to this with a good subwoofer and a good room is out of this world!
from a musicians and producers perspective, these albums are incredible. They're prime examples of using the basic producing and mixing fundamentals to achieve what most struggle with, even with the help of vast libraries that provide shortcuts (copy paste workflow), skrillex has once again flexed his understanding of music production. My Supersonic being the perfect example of how to keep a track fresh from start to finish, most people don't know that almost every bar (every 4 beats) in the track is unique to its previous. from a listeners perspective I can understand the dislike as I originally didn't like either album but after a little bit more of an attentive ear this sh*t is setting the bar for producers right now. also with the features, just because this guy either doesn't know of or like them doesn't mean they're limp features' its refreshing to see new and different features that show love to the lesser known artists involved.
This album feels like a real return to form for skrillex while paying homage to classic UK dubstep. I haven’t been a big fan of his more pop edm work and this album really serves us fans who miss classic dubstep
technical skill shouldn’t merit a high score on its own but anyone thats ever produced EDM knows that this album has solidified Skrillex’s place as THE GREATEST sound designer in music right now. His mixing skills are unparalleled. Also this album is a strong 8 to light 9 in my book - i don’t see it being as influential as something like Homework by Daft Punk in its day but it’s imo the best music of its kind.
honestly the way skrillex has formed an epic story across these two albums with a darker and lighter chapter and tying tracks together with vocal samples and melodies is just genius in my opinion. both amazing albums and can’t wait for more skrillex
roughly 2/3 of this album is brilliant, most of that adventurous - the other 1/3 is a bit too safe by comparison, but solid enough, I spose. Cut it back to those 9 songs (2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12) and add something wacky that maybe no one likes at the very end (go REALLY far out there), and you have a fantastic 10/10 album, one to be remembered by. As it stand now, its still great, it's just 'marred' by solid stuff that by comparison doesn't surprise and delight like those three trios. CANNOT believe this is coming along with that other... thing.
Quest for Fire, as a electronic fan was so clean, unique, fresh, and nostalgic that even it felt like Skrillex grew up the same way I grew up. Middle school dubstep turned into one of the best producers and DJs I can name with much more mature cuts in the mix.
Skrillex gets a lot of hate for being the poster boy of "brostep", but he's got firm dub roots and displays them very well on this album. It almost feels like the two albums are him trying to appeal to both halves of his legacy at once: on one end a skilled and experienced basscrafter, on the other end a top 40 hype man. I guess time will tell which album the audiences will respond to more, but I definitely know which one I like.
It has to be one of my favorites from him, the more simplistic approach to the tracks shows the maturity, the way you can set a vibe or get people to dance with something as simple as a percussion loop or an FM Bass vs the ADHD driven bass growls and obnoxious loud, over compressed synth sound designs. In a scene where everyone tries to one up each other by making the craziest sounds, its kind of refreshing to hear something that gets you back to the point of the whole genre, just to make you move.
i think Don't Get Too Close is meant to be listened after QFF, which gives it so much more context. At first I didn't know what to think about it after listening to DGTC, but it's a vibe, it's just music, inspiration, experiences, i don't know how to explain it but i think Painting Rainbows sums it all up. For me this was the best come back he could've done, just wait for what's next...
I understand the hate about his other album, but to me it's that kind of albums that doesn't work really well when it's experienced for the first time, i just kept listening to some of the tracks and miraculously they sound much better somehow, but about this album... No words... Gorgeous, and Xena is something else.

Reading Soundcloud comments hating on the minimal atmospheric more simple dubstep sound now is really some sweet irony from the old comments I used to read about how "Mehh this isn't dubstep" now it's "Mehh this isn't Skrillex"
Also not sure you mentioned A Street I Know but I am a sucker for Skrillex vocal chops and that song fills me with joy, even if it's not that ambitious
Melon really glosses over the quality of production in these tracks, supersonic especially sounds absolutely fantastic.
Just because flowdan wasn’t on every track doesn’t mean you can dock points off
As someone who hasn't listen to basically any Skrillex music in the past, And only knows him from the "Brostep" that made him famous, Hearing "Still Here" off this album was honestly quite refreshing, As it actually sounded good, And reminded me of styles I like such as UK Garage or the original Dubstep.
Said it before but I’ll say it here as well:
THIS. RECORD. IS. LITERALLY. FIRE.
Skrillex is definitely a crazy good producer and I'm glad he's still actively making stuff
I do hope this is a return to him just regularly putting out music again, because at its best, this album is pretty stellar with top-notch production and low end.
🐸🐸🐸
i loved porters influence on the closing track
any producer or someone who can appreciate quality sound design should listen to the track tears on that album. sleepnet is also so underrated and definitely looking forward to seeing him grow from noisia
Congratulations to Skrillex on a perfect 10/10 for these two albums 🙌

@@FisherofAirborneMarsh Nah dude, you don't add the denominator, were you even paying attention in school??
I remember being 16 hearing Skrillex' remix of Cinema and being blown away by that type of sound... Always been a Skrillex fan that fully understood why he got so much hate but still loved his music, right now just happy to get more of his wub wubs
Oof that Benny Benassi remix awoke something in me
Why would he get so much hate tho
@@tumultuousv probably because of his image, the sound of his music and the high pitched vocals on it, also he was hated by dubstep purists

If this album was called “Quest for Water,” then you would’ve given it a 10.
If the album was called "a tribe called quest for fire" he would have given it a ten.
@@Foeisudhxj Kid named Quest For Fire:

@@A_Friendly_Robot The majority wished for it. We CRAVE the heavy sounds he was known for...

Quest for Fire = 7/10
Don’t Get Too Close = 3/10
7+3=10
Thank you Melon for giving Skrillex a 10
I really wish the album had more of a theme, like the artwork is so awesome and implies a particular epic nature that I don't think it had consistently.
@@solizemusic that song is so fucking bad lol
How can you not even talk about the best song on the album, supersonic it's actually one of the best pieces of EDM i've heard in awhile
Unfortunately the vocals and lyrics let it down. Sounds like they were written and performed by a moody teenager who's just found out life isn't fair
🐸🐸🐸
Supersonic alone has as many hits as the rest of the album combined lol
Surprised he didn’t mention porter Robinson featured in the last song
This album slaps imo on repeat listens especially. The vocal for leave me like this has been living in my head rent free since the Fred Again.. boiler room set.
I love the sound design on this album every sound is so full and warm
I wasn't aware that Supersonic was a remix! That said, I still think the end result is really good, despite knowing it's not technically an original song
You could argue most of the songs are remxies, in the sense that a lot of the vocals are just from other tracks
XENA, Inhale Exhale, RATATA, Too Bizarre (Juked) all use vocals from older songs!
@@Twtching Still Here also
@@chroma-agogo oh yeah course!
it's a Noisia remix and instandly turned into their most streamed song ever lol
🐸🐸🐸
I’m surprised he didn’t like it more than a light 7. This project sort of touched all the sounds he was known for while also trying out some new stuff with tracks like Xena. I really would like him and Fred to produce an album together because the flodan tracks and sound need a full project.
are u sane? Please listen to SMNS again and then delete your comment
Supersonic is quite amazing in my opinion you should not relegate it in a generic dubstep zone because It just doesn't belong in that grey category but it is very complex and well put together.

1:37 - Ratata
2:14 - Tears

Supersonic is like one of the best songs I've heard in years. Remix or not, it's so so so good
Still here is phenomenal and one of the vibeiest big festival tracks I've heard in a long time.
Honestly such a refreshing listen that stays far away from all the boring ass tech house that everyone seems to think is so great.
Easily Skrillex’s best project! I’m so excited to see where he goes from here, especially knowing he’s a massive Aphex Twin fan.
Aphex twin is your favorite dj's favorite dj

eh maybe one day when he stops caring about being mainstream he can try doing more experimental stuff. as of now hes definitely not going for it
glad you enjoyed (it is a good record) but I think its kinda lame how you just ignored almost all featured artist that aren't on the vocal side. these artists bring a lot to the table and are an integral part of the songs and the whole record - it's kind of skrillex' whole idea to be making music with his friends. people like joker peekaboo noisia porter robinson and everyone else actually are a massive part of this and essential to its critique, I think you could've wasted a few second to mention them at least
i feel like this wouldn't have happened with other genres? just because many of these artists may be outside the mainstream sphere of influence it doesn't mean they don't deserve recognition for their contributions
Yeah it was a set mixing the album's songs. Was a fun video
Xena absolutely blew my mind! Raw energy in a song
I like how some people realized that Skrillex is a great producer. Like cmon he's produced almost all genres with his own spin to it.
People are just now coming around to Skrillex? I thought he was a great producer when I first heard him in 2010.
My Supersonic being the perfect example of how to keep a track fresh from start to finish, most people don't know that almost every bar (every 4 beats) in the track is unique to its previous.
from a listeners perspective I can understand the dislike as I originally didn't like either album but after a little bit more of an attentive ear this sh*t is setting the bar for producers right now.
also with the features, just because this guy either doesn't know of or like them doesn't mean they're limp features' its refreshing to see new and different features that show love to the lesser known artists involved.
supersonic was my fav track of last year even though it dropped in 21. absolute killer
You should review Knock2’s latest EP Room 202. I love when you dive into EDM but remember we offer more than just Skrillex and Porter! ❤
Giving Skrillex a 7 cause “he’s hot now.” isn’t a review.
Bro I didn’t see this until now. Bro became a hunk 😭.
Fun fact: the Navi sample on tears isn’t actually the original from ocarina of time it was a recreation by an artist named salamimeats
This album feels like a real return to form for skrillex while paying homage to classic UK dubstep.
I haven’t been a big fan of his more pop edm work and this album really serves us fans who miss classic dubstep
oh man im starving for good old uk dubstep to be new again
technical skill shouldn’t merit a high score on its own but anyone thats ever produced EDM knows that this album has solidified Skrillex’s place as THE GREATEST sound designer in music right now. His mixing skills are unparalleled.
Also this album is a strong 8 to light 9 in my book - i don’t see it being as influential as something like Homework by Daft Punk in its day but it’s imo the best music of its kind.
"strong 8 to light 9 in my book ",yup and with some edited that track list down, a 10/10 electronic album
Whatever your thoughts are on him, he is one of the most influential edm artists of this generation and this album is just a reminder of that.
Personally the VIP version of supersonic on the Noisia album from last year is the better version. The drum and bass section is way too good
I wish fantano had talked about noisia at some point.
Eh. It's okay.
honestly the way skrillex has formed an epic story across these two albums with a darker and lighter chapter and tying tracks together with vocal samples and melodies is just genius in my opinion. both amazing albums and can’t wait for more skrillex
roughly 2/3 of this album is brilliant, most of that adventurous - the other 1/3 is a bit too safe by comparison, but solid enough, I spose.
CANNOT believe this is coming along with that other... thing.
Wrong - solid 8 that could have been a 10 - editing is an amazing thing, just look at the first star wars film from 1976 or whatever.
A Skrillex x Corey Feldman project would kill. So disappointing that didn't happen here 😕
He changed his shirt real quick
Two reviews for the same artist in the same day? This must be a record
Quest for Fire, as a electronic fan was so clean, unique, fresh, and nostalgic that even it felt like Skrillex grew up the same way I grew up. Middle school dubstep turned into one of the best producers and DJs I can name with much more mature cuts in the mix.
Quest for fire and don't get too close are both good albums
Surprised he didn’t mentioned A Street I Know, it’s one of my favorites. The outro is pure bliss.
The album Don't get for fire is officially a 10
I cant believe you didnt mention that the last song transitions back to the first song very well.
i clicked faster than the drop on RATATA
regarding QFF, at first I was disappointed since it wasn´t dusbtep. I wanted the classic Skrillex style. Now I am enjoying it more and more.
The Flowdan features on this album remind me of Say Nothing and its very cathartic.
album of the year so far for me
Appreciate the review! I think it’s better than a light 7, but you certainly justify your rating of it! I give it an 8.5. Very exciting stuff.
I didn't think your review would be an in-depth history video on major arsonists, but you do you, Anthony.
I have waited this album for 5 years and Im glad that it came out like this
i think Don't Get Too Close is meant to be listened after QFF, which gives it so much more context. At first I didn't know what to think about it after listening to DGTC, but it's a vibe, it's just music, inspiration, experiences, i don't know how to explain it but i think Painting Rainbows sums it all up. For me this was the best come back he could've done, just wait for what's next...
Getting a 7 is basically like getting a 10 with Anthony.. the album has some fun songs 👍
why is no one talking about the Anthony appearance more??? His voice just appeared and I lost my shit on first listen
I understand the hate about his other album, but to me it's that kind of albums that doesn't work really well when it's experienced for the first time, i just kept listening to some of the tracks and miraculously they sound much better somehow, but about this album... No words... Gorgeous, and Xena is something else.
