Brilliant! I wish I had discovered your channel a few years ago! I am 47, swam all my life, every night (breast strokes) and I got a sciatica leg problem and I have not been swimming anymore! Walking and biking in the pool is excellent! Never understood why my knee ligaments were sore after swimming.
You are exactly right about breast stroke swim cause my knee pain, I have to switch to back stroke. Thanks for your water exercise, I feel much better, lesser knee pain❤❤❤❤
I used swimming for knee dislocation recuperation many years ago and still do it today for degenerative disc disease. I like treading and bicycling in deep water to relieve back disc issues and shallow water for walking and stretching. I can actually jog in the pool but never on land. 😅 Then hot tub as a reward. When walking causes back or knee pain, I have to swim. My aunt used swimming as her preferred exercise and she lived to be 96.
Hey Will, I bought a copy your book the other week, haven't read it all yet., (crazy busy) I'm loving the water exercises for strengthening AROUND my knees....thank you
Just got back from swimming and was shocked to see this video (as I have a knee problem on one leg and recovering achilles tendon on the other). However I was doing many of these movements during length recovery breathers (just because they felt so good to do in the water). It's a great way to build up the muscles as the body weight is taken off the joints making the movements so much easier to perform and I feel that I am less likely to damage or tear something.
I've been having knee pain off and on all year and I find that my knee hurts much more after swimming, even when I don't do breast stroke. Thank you for showing us alternative exercises that we can do in the pool to help us recover..
Thanks as ever Will. What about swimming with shoulder injuries eg. post-dislocation, impingement and other shoulder injuries? Sometimes older people just seem to have shoulder problems as they get older. Which strokes are best and which should be avoided? I’m guessing that it’s not the same as knee injuries (but I might be wrong)!
What about swimming and shoulder joint problems? Or even rotator cuff issues? Can you do a video on shoulder rehabilitation in water? Any water exercises for shoulder problems?
Excellent video. Breast swim may be warmful. The exercises inside water are outrageous. I am medical doctor and your tips for over fifty are very useful and rarely recommended. I will order your book to Brazil. Congratulations!
That’s very helpful, thank you so much! I would be very grateful if you could answer some practical questions: How many repetitions per exercise to begin with? What is the best frequency for most effectiveness without harming the knee further? Swimming and dancing are my antidepressants. I injured my meniscus a few days ago and not being able to dance anymore is hard. I’ll wait with the swimming (back and crawl) till I get a feeling for the ‘avoid rotation and bending’ part. But I’m happy I can get into the water to do these exercises.
I am recovering from a hip fracture , almost healed naturally. Is breast stroke safe for me to do? I do all these exercises in water advised by my physio. Great video
Hiya . . . additional swimming content would be appreciated. All your content is fab. i.e. best muscle groups to ensure are strong - warm up exercises etc etc
great @@HT-Physio Not sure of your REACH demographic but I am South West Coast Brit. Columbia and there are a kajillion of open water swimmers here--Salish Sea is our main body and endless lakes. I have given your channel info to various people and will give to more come June when more pple swimming outside again. Also absolute tons of triathletes, incl. endless people in mid 20s through late 30s from Ireland as Canada hands them long length work visas that many renew and then so many just do the paperwork and stay. I spend a lot of time with them and will continue to share your content with them also.
Great video, Will. I wanted to ask if you could ship e any light on gout in the knees and exercises in the pool. Or exercises of any kind? Do you classify that as arthritis? My husband suffers from it on occasion and obviously takes him out of any type of exercise.
Thanks again Will. My husband has herniated disc,is swimming go for him? We usually go to the beach once per week ,so he could swim to relieve his pain
I haven’t swum for years did an hour of breast stroke and have now stained my medial ligaments, having never had any knee pain in my life when doing other sports although I do also think my knees hyperextend. I falsely thought that you couldn’t really go wrong with swimming
To lose weight, in a salt water pool , I use a kick board so I can tread water, with body submerged upright below armpits. Am I putting my 75 year old knees at risk?
I swim front crawl (freestyle) as you call it with a snorkel as I suck at side to side breathing - with the snorkel I can easily do 50-60 laps (2-3kms ) non-stop - I am 52
I had hip bursitis for the last two months and was flaring it when doing the side stroke and breast stroke. What helped me recover was treating the inflammation with advil and ice for three days in a row. Now I'm strengthening those hip muscles very slowly and tightening my glutes and abs when sitting. And I'm back to swimming, but only the freestyle and backstroke.
It feels much more of a chore to go to the pool only to do some exercises instead of swimming. When I swim, I relax physically and mentally. I won’t get this from doing some exercises. And I still have to change, shower, dry myself and carry wet stuff back home. It isn’t worth it.

Breast stroke may be warmful, but crawl generaly not. That is what he tried to alert.
Now we know why fish do not have knees.

😂 no, they don't seem to kneed them

Thanks for you comment - I'll add this to my list of topics to make a video on in the future!
Thank you for your videos, they ate very clear and to the point. Would these exercises also be good for sciatica?
I have been trying to use the crawl kick with breast stroke for quite a while, but tend to slip back, so thanks for the reminder.

Yes! Finally some swimming exercises from an expert❤
Happy to help!
I, too, am a huge believer in doing the right exercises in a swimming pool. Thanks, Will for explaining so well those options. 🏊🏻♀️
You're very welcome!

Thank you, Will. I was contemplating swimming more as a low impact exercise. 1 wonky knee.

How do I know if I haven't tried?
What about aqua aerobics? What knee braces suitable for this activity please?
Is it bad for sciatica and piriformis as well ?
I'm recovering from blowing out my quads tendons a year ago. Been swimming for 7 months and regaining strength and
Thanks a lot ❤
You're welcome 😊
what is front crawl? like free-style stroke?
How about aqua jogging? Does that hinder the recovery of a knee injury?
Take for advice.👍👍💪🏻💪🏻
I have a laterally tilted pelvis and cant swim breast stroke with it. I thought it might have helped loosen the tendons. Bavk crawl is easy though.
What about swimming if you have bursitis, Trocanteric? Thanks! 😊

I am 72 years old, Last 15 years i do swimming evry day 30/40/ minutes. No damage to my knees
Would walking in a pool be good for osteoporosis?
If you have been taught how to swim properly,, at least three different types of strokes, then I do feel swimming is people's best option.
This sux, cuz I love swimming
Well, I'm 71 and don't have any pain, but then I've never learned to swim.
It’s never too late to

With mentality like that you’ll never get back to a healthy normal for yourself. Mindset is priority one after all!
@@shykur I think I will just go on swimming because it does me good !
The frog kick takes away almost as momentum as it does pushing forward. It is bad in every way.
Thriving Beyond Fifty, Amazon £29.99. You are kidding me. Sorry. hard pushed to pay £7 ish.
Shine any light, not ship e..I don't even know what that f@#&*is
