Also serpents represent in several cultures rebirth and inmortality, and fromsoft always inspires from cultural symbolism.
We can see that the power of entities strong enough create and influence life (places influenced by mohg have sanguine dogs and albiraunics, golden leafs and plants near erdtrees, every scarlet rot places, etc). Messmer's fire is somewhat similar. Some of its flame stay active on their own and take on the shape of snake. Serpents are associated with magma on Mt. gelmir. Imo, Gelmir volcano gave birth to the immortal snake. Messmer was born with great fire power which gave birth to two snakes inside of him. Giants aren't affected by snakes because their fire is influenced by the fell god and so take on a different shape (the face and eye of the fell god). Same as frenzy flame or bloodflame.

All I can think is Eiglay/God-Devouring Serpent is from the Land of Shadow? Due to a small version of its snake skin being there. Maybe it terrorized the shamans, leading Marika to fear snakes (and thus fear her own son)? Also those man fly carcasses are super creepy!
I wish people would stop calling it that. It's not confirmed the Serpent has a name, and the Godskin Noble there could be named Eiglay as well. It could be a Blackflame Monk. Eiglay could be any number of people.
There was a divine bird that Ornis defeated and there are other divine beast corpses hanging from the specimen storehouse. They live on as spirits and nestle themselves inside sculpted keepers to reanimate them when invoked. So perhaps the snake was also a divine beast of Rauh as its immortality seems to work in a similar way.

this is the God Devouring Serpent for sure. the head shape is the same, and molting multiple time to achieve the size it became. either Rykard came to Land of Shadow to search for the serpent, or the serpent cross the veil to The Lands Between and then ate Rykard.
I'd like to think Rykard went to the shadow realm since it is said he met Tanith as a dancer in a faraway land, and there are some similarities between the dancer of Ranah and Tanith.
For sure its Eiglay before Rykard fed himself to it. If you put every snake model in the game side by side (Eiglay, Abyssal Serpent (Messmer’s version too), winged snake, man serpents, snail-snakes) they’re all very different and easily recognizable from each other. In the intro cutscene for elden ring it shows Rykard getting devoured by the serpent while it's at a much smaller size. There's are a lot of confusing things about this DLC.

The Great Serpent is something like a physical god (near-immortal and immense in power), and it being able to traverse between the realms doesn't seem that unfeasible. It probably traversed through realms, eating as it went, until Rykard came along and corrupted it
Might be that the Great Serpent is a spawn or manifestation of the Base Serpent? And that Messmer's affliction at birth was to be tied to that god, in the same way Malenia was cursed to be a vessel for the Scarlet Rot god.

We never see any monsters resembling the larger ones, while the smaller ones seem to have clawed their own way out of their cocoons, which we see scattered all over the place.

A village of a woman who could ascend to Goddess, she is of the same race as Marika and worships a Snake. The village of the Gloam-eyed Queen The only village that Mesmer did not attack on his mother's orders out of revenge and competition.
Isn’t it rather strange that Bonny Village and its gaol remains relatively intact despite it being the site of the the gruesome jarring rituals? You’d think that Marika’s retribution upon it would be absolute, reduced to nothing but a smoldering, salted ruin or even a bloody forest of impaled Hornsent corpses. Unless the Hornsent are some hardy folks who rebuilt the village time and time agin despite repeated purgings. Or the village remains mostly intact simply for gameplay reasons and letting the player explore it to their heart’s content.

At first I wanted to think that snake skin was just Messmer's... but it looks nothing like his snake form and SO MUCH like the skin at Volcano Manor that it makes me think that maybe Messmer was the one responsible for summoning the blasphemous serpent into the Lands Between and it fled before the Shadowlands were hidden away. Perhaps that's why it's "blasphemous", because it didn't obey Messmer?
I really think that From only reused the God Devouring Serpent skin model instead of creating a new one for the DLC and that skin is from Messmer itself, remember that skin is right next to the Oh Mother gesture

Maybe there was a tale perhaps Marika and a family member/friend were being a subject to torture by those of Bonny Village and encountered the blasphemous snake. Maybe Marika escaped it or even supposed tried to kill it and escape her fate? Sounds like a stretch but may have found it interesting if true that they encountered one another at some point.
I don't think these have any meaning. I legitimately think that SoTET was a bunch of concept art that was loosely strung together with no rhyme or reason as to how it actually fits together with the hope that the community would headcanon it together.

No, Miyazaki definitely seeks the way of no certainty, because he read Umberto Eco (the author of "Il Nome della Rosa" - The Name of the Rose). In Opera Aperta and other works, Eco states that a predictable story is banal and trivial, also giving an order to all the props and "materials" of the story results in a banal story. We know that Miyazaki took Martin's work and destroyed it. This is his way of directing the works. He acts just like time, that consumes the books and knowledge. He leaves the holes and nobody will ever know the full lore. So debates begin. As well as the archaeologists and the historians do. And we're here debating in the comments, Bonfire Zullie Vaati etc make videos about that because It Is not banal. Just like Dante's Comedy. It Is called " ineffabile " in italian.

Can't remember who pointed it out but the caretakers use blood magic so it's highly likely they were the ones who were spreading the infection.
