With mental health issues skyrocketing worldwide, is it possible that the field of mental health is part of the problem? If so, how can you take charge of your wellness? Perhaps you can begin by taking 5 minutes each morning while your coffee brews to implement simple, evidence-based strategies that lay the foundation for life-long wellness. Achieving sustained happiness is easier than you’ve been told. Best-selling author, award-winning professor, and psychotherapist, Dr. Diane Gehart is known for fun, practical mental health solutions, including Mindfulness for Chocolate Lovers: A Lighthearted Way to Savor More Each Day and Simply Sane: A 3-Step, Brain-Based System for Creating Wellness in 5 Minutes per Day or Less. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I was searching for motivational mental health related talks and it sent me here !!!!!!!!
So glad. Hopefully, it helped you find a realistic path forward. We have made "the pursuit of happiness" too complex in the 21st century.
I've never realized but she's right about how our brains are always looking for something to worry about
The humans that survived thousands of years ago worried a lot...unfortunately, we are stuck with brains that look for danger...everywhere. But once you embrace this reality, the good news is that you can hijack the biology to work in our favor!
I love the idea of the partnership model between therapist and client. In my experience therapists who act like they know everything about you after one session are so frustrating. It just feels presumptuous and like they aren't really taken in the details of your experiences
Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I think many folks have had this happen, and it really isn't a good model at all.
The bit about filtering out the noise of social media resonated with me, it’s been affecting my mental health so i deactivated Fb and insta today ! Liberating !!
Excellent. I have had so many clients say it really makes a difference...and I find it saves me lots of money too!
Mental Health is sooooo important . We all deserve good mental well being but sadly fewer have it now !
100% agree. It is sad that so few have it at a time in history when there are so many ways to find it.
Going from being a really unhappy teenager to finding happiness through small steps was really cool to hear about.
And it is 100% true! It is amazing to discover that happiness is more of a life skill than an emotion that requires the outside world to give you what you want!
Wow, this lady's really nailing it about our mental health system being stuck in the past. It's wild to think we're still using old-school methods in 2024. Maybe it's time to shake things up and totally rethink how we deal with mental health?
I could not agree more!! It is a strange situation.
The whole system doesn’t need evolutionary change it needs revolutionary change and i would put you in charge Diane !!!!!!!
Wow! Thanks so much! Yes, the system is in need of an upgrade!
Unmasking mental health ! It was world s**i use prevention day the other day - very timely talk ! Really enjoyed it
Glad you enjoyed it! Mental health seems to be a timely talk most of the time!
Mental health will be a topic that is never over discussed !! Love this one in particular too.
Thanks so much! Glad it resonated with you.
The concept of tiny habits is game-changing for me. I always set these huge goals and then feel like a failure when I can't stick to them
I think we all have had the same experience. I am continually surprised at how well the 5-minute hack works. I hope you try it...just set as many reminders as you need to make it happen!
Signing up for the Path To Success thing i was sent along with your talk to watch !!!!! Love both !!!!!!!!!!!! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
So glad you enjoyed it...and I look forward to seeing you on the Path to Success as well!
Her point about social media influencers dishing out mental health advice hit the nail on the head. It's scary how much power these people have. We really need to be more critical about where we get our information from, especially when it comes to mental health.
Agreed. Some of it is good, but some of it does more harm than good.
@@DianeRGehartPhD I've noticed TED puts disclaimers up on talks done by non medical people on medical talks
Great work all at TEDxQueensU .. loved this event , absolutely fantastic production and everyone should be very proud , i enjoyed all but one of the talks and i’ll not say which one !
Yes, the team at QueensU was amazing! Such a beautiful stage and beautifully organized and hosted.
appreciate the secrets to sanity !! Well done Diane on a really great talk with a hugely interesting perspective too on mental health . Appreciate you !
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm loving this whole partnership thing between therapists and clients. It's so much more empowering than the old "doctor knows best" routine
And it is so much more effective! We really need to shift this paradigm.
I think this topic will be a hot bed for talks for however long this earth is here !! Mental Health related talks will always be relevant!!!!!! Congratulations 🙌
Very true. I hope we get better at raising the next generation to be happier.
The story telling is super impressive Diane . I congratulate you on a first class talk !
Wow--no one has ever told me that. That means a lot. Thanks so much!
Breaking goals down to what you can manage on your worst day? That's brilliant! It's like, even if all I can manage is one push-up, it's still something. Makes big changes feel way less scary and way more doable.
It's amazing what a difference it makes. I hope you give it a try.
Mental Health talks are so fundamental to understanding this minefield !
That is why I thought it was so important do do this talk. It really has become a minefield for folks looking for help.
I didn't realize just how tied together our mental and physical health is... it's like they're having a constant back and forth that we aren't even aware of.
It really is eye-opening...and most of us totally underestimate how connected they are.
I appreciate this speakers personal experiences in this one , thank you Diane !
Thanks so much!
The idea of breaking down goals into tiny, manageable tasks is brilliant. I've always struggled with overwhelm, but this approach seems doable.
Give it a try. You will be surprised how much of a difference it makes
Her story about going from a miserable teen to where she is now is really inspiring! It's a good reminder that no matter how dark things get, there's always a chance things can turn around.
I am so glad that you picked up on that and that it inspires you. We really can learn how to be happier. It's more of a skill than it we make it out to be.
The part about tying new habits to existing ones is so smart. I always try to overhaul my entire routine at once and it never sticks
It's called habit stacking...and it really works well. Once you carve out 5 minutes somewhere in your routine, you can switch out what goal you are working on. It makes any personal or work improvement so much easier!
Mental Health Unmasked - one for the generations and can’t help but feel a connection to the pandemic 😷
I didn't even think of that!!! Glad you enjoyed it.
I found the focus on outside exercise pretty interesting. I've always just gone to the gym and thought that was good enough but it makes sense that getting fresh air and sunshine at the same time would be way more beneficial
Try it and see if it works for you! However, if you have made going to the gym a habit...stick with it! Good habits are more valuable than gold!
The story about the patient who was almost institutionalized but actually had a rare disorder really got to me. It's scary to think how easily we can be misdiagnosed. Definitely gonna be a more active participant in my own healthcare from now on.
I just discovered that I am living this reality myself. I was rear-ended in a car accident 5 years ago and recently learned that I had a concussion from it. So, my "stress levels" and untreatable "nerve pain" over the past few years were due to an undiagnosed and untreated brain injury...not to the pandemic, my mom's painful passing, or being a single mom who works 3 jobs. How many other people are experiencing similar things? We have so far to go in this field.
It's crucial to understand the long-term commitment of pet ownership. Pets aren't just gifts or accessories; they are lifelong companions that require care and love, even when it's inconvenient and even when circumstances change!
This is much needed advice for current times, thank you
Thanks so much! Glad it resonated with you.
You know what i love most about this ? Is that it is solutions focused not just problem hosted and that’s what i enjoyed most . Thanks for sharing !
Yes, let's just focus on the solution. Often, hypothesizing about the source of the problem doesn't help as much as it should.
I love how she encourages mental health professionals to learn from their clients' lived experiences. Expertise comes in many forms, it's important to be open to all of them
It's really key to effective therapy!
The part about our brains always looking for something to worry about really resonated with me. Sometimes we're resistant to doing little things that help because we write it off before we try.
🙌🙌🙌 Mental Health Matters !
So glad you agree!
The production value in the tedx event is awesome ! Look at the size of that red dot and you just sink into it ! Haha the things i notice . Fan talk Diane !!!!!
Love this collaborative partnership perspective , imagine if it’s ever implemented in the mainstream , thought leading stuff Diane !
Thanks so much! It really would make a huge difference.
Thought leading at its finest Diane.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it.
I have huge respect for your passion for your subject area evidenced by all your successes . Keep shining the light for everyone !!!!
Thanks so much. That means a lot!
Thank you so much for your kind words!! I really appreciate it.
Beautifully delivered talk Diane and i personally took a lot from it. Mental Health does matter and not just one day a year but every day . Wonderful talk and thank you for sharing !
So glad it resonated!
Mental Health Unmasked is a brilliant title and straight away you got my attention Diane, very interesting talk and a great share :))
So glad you liked it and it made sense to you!
Mental Health Unmasked - very very good choice of words for an even better talk . Sharing this one !
So glad you liked the title!
As someone who's tried a bunch of different therapies, the idea of a unifying framework is super appealing. It's exhausting trying to figure out which approach is best. Hope more therapists start adopting this kind of model.
It's so true. It's really impossible for the person seeking treatment to know. Even if you do the research to understand which approach "should" work best for your approach, each person you find implements it differently. Arguably, the most consistent research finding is that there person who delivers the therapy is MORE important than the treatment model they use. It's soooo confusing.
Some great points to consider here. It affects everyone but so few people have healthy coping mechanisms
Happy it resonated with you. It's so true...we live at a time when we know so much about how to be happy, but so few are.
Just for the record , i appreciate this ‘compliment ary approach’ to shining the light on what is a very important topic area and under discussed at the highest level - until now . Well done !!!
Thanks so much. So glad it resonated.
This is a great talk , i took so much away from it Diane . Keep sharing your message far and wide
Thanks so much. I am so glad it resonated. I hope you find ways to use the ideas to improve your life. There really are easy ways to find peace and happiness.
Imagine if we were all empowered to get more involved in our own mental health journeys... would be kind of incredible
I agree 100%! It's really easier than we make it out to be.
Amazing stage presence Diane Gehart !!!!!!!!!!
So very kind. I appreciate it!
You know, I never really gave much thought to how our physical health messes with our heads. This talk's got me side-eyeing my whole lifestyle.
Awesome! Hopefully, you can see a few places where small changes might make a big change.
Think twice before taking advice from a 15 second reel is the best advice i’ve heard in any talk in a long time !!!! Real talk Diane 🎯💯
So glad you agree!
Motivating , inspiring and empowering one another is the way forward to increased mental health and well being in our communities.
It really is easiest when we support each other!
I never thought about how stressful change can be, even positive change. The tip about keeping changes very small to avoid triggering our stress response is golden. Explains why my past attempts at overhauling my life always failed.
Clearly, you got the most important message. Once you master mini-habits, you can achieve most anything in life!
Diane i was depressed after a break up, doctor put me on tablets , im no longer depressed but ive been on this tablet for 30 years , i cant get off it ! Tablets aren’t always the answer , we need more
That sounds like quite a journey. Glad you got through the depression--it can be so challenging. All the best to you.
I wholeheartedly agree i feel the mental health system is failing massively on a global scale , it puts a plaster over problems not focused on the root causes and long term solutions ! Bravo 👏
Thanks so much! So glad it resonated.
Very very good talk Diane , i have listened to this twice and planning a social media post about it , really loved it and your message !
Fabulous speaker and i LOVED your ability to connect with the audience !!! That jumps from the screen to me and that’s a difficult skill to master , one of the best !!
Wow! Thanks so much for your kind words. You really made my day!
Keep unmasking it Diane !!!
I will...thanks for the encouragement!
I appreciate how she didn't just push one approach for everyone. Mental health is complicated, and it's good to see that recognized.
I cam glad that message was clear! Thanks for emphasizing it here.
Such an important topic , great share Diane.
Thanks so much! So glad you found it helpful! Hope you have fun putting into action in your life.
Diane ! Amazing !
Glad you enjoyed it.
I implemented some great habits and routines in my life to ensure i look after my well being .. starting with a 5am cold water plunge
Congrats! It really does make a difference.
I never realized how important community and relationships are for mental health. I've been feeling really isolated since leaving my last job so maybe I need to make more of an effort with my friends or join some clubs or something
It really is. If we look at countries that are highly individualistic, they tend to be less happy. You don't need a ton of friends, but at least 2 really close ones, and then a small community of some kind. It really makes a HUGE difference.
Diane you are certainly a fantastic speaker !
Wow! Thanks so much.
More men in particular need to hear this i strongly feel !
I hope everyone can find a kernel of wisdom that resonates with them.
Love the foundations for real meaningful wellness Diane, superb talk. Congratulations !
So glad you enjoyed it!
Grateful for this important message Diane !!!
So glad it resonated with you.
Inspiring change Diane !
Thanks so much!
Mental Health Awareness month in October , very timely talk !
Thanks for pointing that out! Great time to share!
I agree with her a transformation of the field is definitely what's needed right now!
So glad you agree!
Talk of the year !
Thank you. I really appreciate it!
Diane you are such an amazing speaker , i’ve listened to your other related videos too, very inspiring lady
Thanks so much for your kind words. So glad it resonates with you.
AMAZING talk . Thanks tedx and Diane of course ! An idea truly worth sharing !
Thanks so much!
Smart colour choice too ! The blue just pops on the famous red dot ! Clever
Thanks! I almost went with red, but a colleague of mine did a research study that indicated people got better test scores when the exam was printed on blue vs. yellow, pink or green. So I wear blue in the off-chance that it helps people understand what I am saying. A bit superstitious...even though based vaguely in research.
I’ve always said happiness is the ultimate goal , maybe it’s more the journey Diane . Appreciate this message very much !
Psychological research would say that much of happiness is found along the way...
Many congratulations Diane.
Thanks so much!
Fantastic talk, delivery and famous red dot presence . A naturally gifted speaker in my humble opinion for what it’s worth. Game changing talk !!!
Thank you so much. That means so much! You just made my day!

Small incremental lifestyle changes consistently over time become habits and then you see improvements - focus on wellbeing everyone not being sick !
It really is surprising how small changes lead to life-changing outcomes.
Great advice , perspective and message Diane ! Appreciate all you do !
Thanks so much. I really appreciate it.
Your TedxTalk was awesome. Gonna post in my home the following takeaways: 1) The 5 Pillars of Wellness, 2) "The journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step", and 3) "I can improve my life no matter what is happening by starting with little healthy habits". Thank you for the motivation to live a more healthy and productive lifestyle.
Thank you for sharing these quotes! I am glad you found them inspiring!
Having a fresh coffee watching this - just taking 5 minutes Diane ! :-))
Love it! I really is that easy!
Congratulations!
Thanks so much!
Excellent perspective and one not afraid to look at other potential causes or roots of the problem. Really enjoyed this very fresh view point. Thanks for sharing !
So glad it made sense to you!
I'm all for this partnership model between therapists and clients. Empowering people is the way to go.
Glad you agree. It really is essential to ensure long-term benefits of any form of mental health treatment.
No matter what life throws at us, we can always find ways to improve our situation. That's a message of hope right there
Summed up beautifully!
Wonderful! I found myself doing counter push ups while listening. 😊 Every step does count. ❤
Love it! No time like the present!
Amazing , took lots from this ❤️
Best news I heard all day!
Diane you are such an eloquent speaker , love your stage presence and confident delivery. Enjoyed your talk very much !
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it.
When you mention binging Netflix or glued to the couch , you know what that made me think of ??? Pandemic 😷
100%. It was a reality for many.
Loved the Five Pillars of Wellness and the summary of a unified framework-Therapy That Works!
Glad it resonated with you! I think we keep maintaining mental health more complex than it needs to be.
I love how practical this talk was. So many ted talks are all theory, no action. But this one gave me concrete steps I can take today to start improving my mental health and I appreciate that!
So glad you found it makes a difference. Create some reminder and be consistent for 2-3 weeks...you will surprise yourself!
Sanity !! Love it
It's refreshing, isn't it!
Grateful to have this and totally agree
Glad it resonated!
Super share and a great tedx ! 🔴❌
