when you are terrified by how FAST time flies

  • lately I have been especially anxious over how fast time flies. How fast you age...
I had a thought today that helped me a lot.
Basically, the only thing you have to show for the time that's in the past, time you can never ever get back, is the things you have gained, learned, accomplished, created and contributed.
Ask yourself what you want, what you want in life, in the coming years.... then do just a little of it every day. because the days will go by, and the only thing you'll have is the things you spent your time on.
If those things are movies/shows/games and social media, you won't have much to show for the time that's now in the past.
It's a powerful realization that you can do anything. Because even though it goes fast, you also have a LOT of time.

Hey guys!! Thanks for all the love!
    I'd like to clarify something.
All my videos are completely unscripted because I want to present myself and my thoughts in the most genuine and authentic way.
However that means sometimes (or oftentimes) I don't present my thoughts clearly or concisely.
In this video the message was not to work, work, work and create and acheive nonstop.... that's not at all what I believe. (I'm actaully vehemently opposed to the whole achievement trap narrative that is being pushed, but that's for another video!)
The point was, to think deeply about what you want, what is important to you. What you want to learn, or if you want more or better relationships, what you want to contribute, etc, just thinking about what is important to you and what kind of memories you want to have and to know that doing those things a little at a time adds up quickly!
Your life is the consequence of all the choices you make every day.
I just want to make clear that I am not saying having fun is bad!! I am a huge advocate for having fun, making memories and slowing down.
This video is about living a fulfilling and full life and not having regrets and "I wish," when we're older.

Kurt Friedrich Gödel was a logician, mathematician, and analytic philosopher. He wrote about a World Without Time. This was only a theory.
I have evidence, but no theory, that I label _synchronistic mathematics_
For me, time is extended, and I would never claim that time moves too fast. I see much more than I did as a young man, and reflect back, and ahead of the current moment. Sometimes time moves slowly, and sometimes very quickly--- this is called psychological time. Circumstances affect our perception of time.

I believe very strongly in making an " I did" list everyday vs.the " To do" list. As someone that has battled depression for many years, this is one tool that's truly benefited me. Some days my list is so small. Example:
    1. Took a shower
    2.Brushed teeth
    3.Took vitamins
    4. Listened to music
Some days, it's really been that short but the reason it helps, is you can look back and see you did SOMETHING positive. I do not like those To-do lists. Nobody ever finishes one of those and when you see all the things you didn't do, it subconsciously leaves you feeling like you failed which then lowers your confidence which then makes you unhappy .
Ditch the to do lists people and get on the I-Did list bandwagon:)

Lyrics from the song Time by Pink Floyd... I remember when I found this song as a teenager it really motivated me to make better use of my time, and set goals to achieve so I have something to show for my time here. Felt the need to share some of those lyrics.
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

While I agree with nearly everything you said, don't take things to an extreme. You do need to work hard for the future, so you don't let your time go to waste. You are stronger now, and have a higher capacity to learn and work now than you will after age 30. But, as a human being, happiness is also important, and you need to take breaks once in a while to get some enjoyment out of life while you are young too. Keep it balanced, though. Totally true - the easiest way to do anything, is to start. I had a very close family member who freaked out when she was 16 and went to live on the street sleeping in cars and the like. She came to see me, quite desperate and at a loss and asked me what she should do. I said to her, 'The best thing I could give you, is 5 years.' - 'in 5 years time you will look back and laugh at this - but I can't give you time, you have to go through it yourself.' Todays she's a mum and a grandmother and I might have to remind her that it ever took place. You are wise beyond your years. :)

I think about this all the time. The saying "Time Marches On" is so true. It never stops. Imagine it like a marching band never stopping, no matter what happens. An example: think about it when you awake earlier than you need to get up for the day. You want to go back to sleep, but you know that time that you have to get up is coming. There is no stopping it. And then it comes. And time keeps marching on, just like the thought of that unstoppable marching band.

Myra, you nailed it again. Time does fly. The trick is to savor it and do something to bring back the memory. I tend to collect little things to remember a place - a rock, a little souvenir, a piece of driftwood - and years later I can pick it up and the memories of that place or moment come flooding back.
But for the past 20 yrs or so, it's photography. A camera is a time machine. I can look at a photo I took of the Grand Canyon or a beach or even a sign and the picture opens the floodgates of memory -photos of good times with people no longer in my life - or even alive anymore - can warm my heart and it's as if I was back there again.
    Stay safe.

That’s awesome to know at your age. One thing that Can happen is working a job that pays the bills and then you realize years have passed. I like construction but when there was a housing crisis in 2008 I started working in warehouses, which was a steady job and a reliable paycheck but then all the sudden 10 years have passed! At least the mortgage got paid off.

I completely sympathise with you. I think many many people will be feeling this way this year. I'm 32 almost 33. I CANNOT understand where my life is going. It feels like 5 minutes ago I was finishing school, yet now Im 32, my friends are married/have kids. My relationship broke down and now I'm living alone. I feel like life is quickly flying away and I'm already feeling so jealous of everyone younger than me. All those hopes and dreams you have when your young yet life feels like any excitement and future has become stagnant, like its come to a halt. I think you are totally right. You cannot just sit around and do nothing. You achieve nothing. We are people of achievement. You need to feel like your accomplishing something, without that life is pointless... Once you achieve something it gives you a sense of well being and you can look back and think, I DID THAT!

You have most definitely contributed something to the world; through sharing your authentic thoughts as it reflects in your life.
Time is an illusion of sorts. It has different realities and properties in each individual life.
It neither flies nor c r a w l s ... it just simply is. Whenever you question yourself in that matter, re-correct and think that thought. Such as if you haven't seen a child in 5 years, and your first thought is "my how you've grown", Your mind plays tricks with you, fooling your memory, that it was yesterday you saw that child ... even though in reality you know it wasn't. Say to yourself: "no ... 5 years have gone by ... of course he should be bigger."
Time is LINEAR ... It neither goes too fast or too slow ... it just is.
Once you think these thoughts, you will end your fear.

Myra!!! I love what you’re saying here. I have to say one thing though-time spent consuming can also be a good thing depending on the situation. For example: time spent watching the sun set below the ocean has the potential to inspire certain thoughts and emotions within me, creating a memory! Memories aren’t tangible, but I do believe that memories definitely have something to show for time spent. Another example is when I came across your video here and took in the content-your words inspired me to comment on your video and now I’ll have a memory of you right here to look back on at random times in the future when you just so happen to flutter into my mind and I can remember the things you said :D some of the best memories are ones that you never realized you’d remember into the future but somehow, they hold on.

Time moves faster as we grow older, every year gets shorter in a relative way.
All that matters is that you stay present living in the now, not in the past or the future.
Paradoxically as it might seem, it's the only way not to waste time.
It's not a matter of what you manifest in the material world, that is secondary bordering irrelevant.
Worry about the knowledge you acquire through life experiences and not if other people recognize it or not.

Hello, Myra, "there are two lines of time. One is a horizontal line which we move along. This is known as passing time. On this line nothing "is" or is "complete". Everything is "seeking". There is another line directly above us, a vertical line, in which everything "is". In which everything is "complete". In which one steps out of the line of passing time and moves into the eternal now. And then the whole picture changes" living time, and the intergration of the life. Maurice Nicoll. Highly recommended.

Yes, life is short and time passes by very quickly....and the older you become the faster it seems to pass. It's a weird realization that a year feels so much shorter now than it did when I was younger. One thing I'd like to add to your list is that you should also use your time to connect with others; to love and be loved, to share, and to help others.....which I suppose you're including under "contribute". As morbid as this may sound, don't forget that you will die one day. So take chances, be bold, and do things you find interesting. It's the best recipe to avoid living in regret later. Just the same, that was a very good, thoughtful video. Love ya, Myra!!!

Hey Myra. I'm 65, well educated, a former journalist, carpenter, business owner, Yellowstone and Grand Teton parks tour guide and environmental activist. I'm watching you and so are many others who you inspire to think and reflect the way we did when we were younger. So, you're doing something. I think we all wonder WTF from time to time, regardless of age, place, education, work. It could be that you're simply gifted, conscious and just beginning to learn how to best communicate and inspire. During this bizarre pandemic, I think a lot of folks are trying to manage their lives and wondering about everything. I don't think most of us get life figured out and feel completely content. Even religious people close to God have doubts.
Forgive me for going on here, but ultimately I wanna say that you're serving a purpose and giving your life and the lives of others some meaning. At least at this moment, and there will be many more. Hang in there, and thanks for doing what you're doing. Life does go fast. Make the best of it and remember there is no finish line with prizes, just rewards and thanks along the way. Good luck, kid.

People are under a wicked evil spell in 2020 (not even joking, deadly serious). Back in 2009 with Swine Flu the world was told to expect hundreds of millions dead, and that they should wear masks and get a vaccine. Nobody listened and were not bothered in the slightest and got on with their lives. So the elites plans were delayed for another 11 years, and now for some strange reason the people are transfixed by another "deadly pandemic" and yet again the answer is mask and vaccines, followed by the new world order being installed. The psychology behind all of this is both fascinating and depressing.

haha ... I have lived in New York City, performed in theater in various Off Broadway theatrical productions. Played music at the Bitter End in the village, traveled the Southern circuit playing dinner clubs and little bars, wrote music for Tree International in Nashville, tn., and had numerous songs used in Indie films. I've also washed dishes in dirty little diners, and given blood to get enough to eat. I survived it all and loved it so much .. I turn 71 soon, and still see me as a young long hair breaking thru barriers everyday .. obviously I'm not 20, or 30 or even 50 .. but while time does pass quickly, you also have more and more stories that will show yourself and others just how much you've lived .. enjoy that living part!!

Your're right doing something useful or constructive is a better use of time. When we do something we really like, our perception of time thinks it goes very quickly yet if we are in pain or waiting for something we perceive it as going really slow. When i was at college, a teacher explained about a theory of our perception of time that he had read - a 7 year old thinks a year is a long time, because a year is a 7th of their life but when that person gets to 70 they perceive a year as a short time because it is now just a 70th of their life.

I think a good way to see the value of your life time and to find a chance to seize it is to imagine being e. g. 85 years old continuing to live all the years til that age the way you've done it so far. Suddenly you come back to the present and give yourself a second chance to make it better. Wish you all the best, Myra!

Its a good point Myra and I like it. I too am always shocked at how fast times flies. You seem to be a fellow thinker. I would add that if everyone only created and no one consumed then the creations would lose meaning and the creators motivation. There is certainly too much easy, lazy consuming, and more creating would enhance peoples lives. But creators do want others to appreciate and benefit from their creations, just like people are appreciating your videos. So the best is a balance of creating and consuming. Also all human creations are inspired by or build upon others. Nothing is completely original and unique. So there is value in consuming, learning from and being inspired by others creations.

The Russian writer, Tolstoy, once said " There is no greatness where there is not simplicity, goodness, and truth". Well, by a man considerably wiser than I, and something I totally agree with, you Myra are the very model of greatness. You always speak your "truth" (which so many people including myself share)'", you are clearly a "good" person (93,000 people seem to agree) and your own words show who much you believe in simplicity. At 49, I am really just beginning to understand. I spent three years of my life in a deep depression and missed a lot due to a medical condition. I will never let that happen again. I wish I had known as much as you do when I was young. I thought I had time for everything. It seems like that was only a few minutes ago. Finally, a thought I wanted to share with you " Time expands, then contracts, all in tune with the stirrings of the heart" words from Haruki Murakami that I have always found to be true when with my family, teaching, or just doing something I love.

I do find it scary the way it flies, and i totally agree on the fact that you have to create and make something out of it. Though i believe it is important to take some of it to rest, meditate, play even. I’m 33 and feel like a day is an hour, a week is a day, etc...
Worrying about the speed of time won’t make it go any slower, so i try to keep my mind busy with things that i consider «enriching» (if i may say so)

To Myra: As someone a lot older than you who has often been bothered by the passage of time, I agree w/your general point, except that you should devote significant stretches of time simply for relaxation and for otherwise having a good time.
Another thing that might help is to realize that it's impossible to imagine a reality that doesn't include the passage of time. In particular, it's inconceivable that there could be a final, eternal moment that one could be (subjectively) stuck on at the end of life.

Hi Myra first off let me tell you this. You are a very insightful young women who sounds very grounded and down to earth. Now with that said you are so right about everything you said in your video and even more so in your follow up post to your message.
All i can tell you is yes time does go by so quickly. an i have always tried to live my by doing the right things life. Like helping others when ever i could. Here are two things that i heard a long time ago. The first one was Duty Honor Country, being exmilitary those words have always meant a lot to me. The second was this and it came from a movie.Which one i can't remember right now. They were talking about life and how long we have to do something good with our lives. It was said like this " look at it this way you have 75 springs, summers, falls and winters what are you gonna do with them". An for the most part that is a very true statement when you really think about it. Now understand this the older you get you will have regrets about things you have done and not done. The trick is to not let that define who or what you are. My feelings are as long as you keep going and trying no matter what then your life has and had meaning to it. Oh and be ready when your life throws you a curveball. Never give up or quit. Lord knows i have been knocked down so many times . I keep getting up though. On that note one other saying from a movie "Gunny Hightower said you need to learn to adapt improvise and overcome". Again another very true statement. My final thoughts are these let regrets go they only drag you down. Second things is as long as you did the best you could do. An always give your all. Looked out for people and stood up for them when they weren't able to stand up for themselves. Then you can always keep your head held high knowing you did the best you could no matter what. An if somebody wants to look down at me then that's their problem not mine. Oh almost forgot know and understand this it took me along time to learn this lesson. No matter how hard you try or how much you care about someone you can't fix or change them. That is probably why i am still single years later. The only person we can fix is our lives. Let me just say that is at least for me a very hard life's lesson that took me many times to finally learn that lesson.

The older you get the faster the time seems to fly bye, Your not alone. sometimes the days feel like minutes to me !!! Time itself is a measurement of our existence. Time is and can be an illusion itself !!! Dont worry about what you have to show for it, just live and do your best to enjoy life !!!

It‘s a fine line between using your time on earth and stressing about it. If I feel overworked and done with the world, the best use for my time is actually doing nothing and just being aware of myself. Going for a walk, meditate, or just sit around and do nothing, which really makes me feel good. I don’t want to need accomplishments to be happy with myself. I just want to have a good time, regardless of creating or learning something or just sitting around in a forest and watch nature. Both should make my time worth it. But I just read that you already clarified, that you have a similar approach :)

Thank you for saying what many young people need to know. I've been playing guitar and piano for fifty-two years, I just keep learning more and getting better. Playing music is like religion, it gives you an anchor in life, there is always something beautiful to learn for the first time, and for all young persons even in spite of all your confusion and suffering, read your Bible whenever you can and learn a musical instrument, they're giving away pianos om FB marketplace. Love you precious. Merry Christmas.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think that these "epiphany" experiences are like mile stones that we encounter as we travel this road of life. They mark not just the passing of time, but the maturing of our hearts and minds, as we ponder the experiences we have, and what we can learn from them. I believe that the more deeply we "think" about our lives, and our purpose, the more fulfilling our lives have the opportunity to become. When we get too caught up in the flow of hurried activity without taking a step back from time to time to "check our compass" and consider our progress and our direction, we soon find that we lose our sense of purpose, and begin to feel like we are in the proverbial "rat race". Keep thinking deeply and keep living creatively. It helps us enjoy the gift of life. Also, you mentioned your artwork. Would you consider making a video demonstrating how you create yours?

That is a huge question and reality that seems to ratchet up in intensity as you age. The metaphysical question I ask myself is if I need my life to be something etched in time on the world or etched in my soul as a personal journey. I think a lot of human damage to the world is caused be the need for some to make "their" time important. The truth is, we are not important. At the same time, we are vessels of vast experience. Live a small yet deeply satisfying life. The hardest part for me is figuring out what make me happy rather then what is supposed to make me happy.
